Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

"English" covers a lot of ground for a Dehradun family. One child reads fluently but loses marks on the format of a formal letter; another understands every lesson yet stops after two lines of a literature answer; a third is preparing for a board paper and an interview at the same time and wants to speak with less hesitation. Before we suggest anyone, we ask three things: the board (Uttarakhand board, CBSE, ICSE or ISC, or an international course), the weakest skill, and your locality. A shortlist of two or three suitable English tutors follows, every fee visible, and your first lesson with the tutor you choose costs nothing.
Dehradun students sit the Uttarakhand board, CBSE and CISCE's ICSE and ISC, and some follow IB or Cambridge IGCSE. The subject has the same name everywhere, but the paper behind it differs.
The 2026-27 curriculum divides the 80 board marks into reading, writing with grammar, and literature. A tutor who knows the split plans the term around it, rather than simply following whichever chapter the school is on.
| Block | Marks | Weekly task |
|---|---|---|
| Literature from First Flight and Footprints without Feet | 40 | Two planned answers, held to the word limit, each quoting or pointing to the text |
| Reading: one discursive passage and one case-based factual passage with a chart or data | 20 | One unseen passage under time, answers checked line by line against it |
| School assessment, including 5 for listening and speaking | 20 | A short spoken summary at the close of each lesson |
| Grammar from the syllabus list | 10 | Errors taken from your child's own writing and fixed one pattern at a time |
| Writing: an analytical paragraph describing a chart, map or graph, and a formal letter, 5 marks apiece | 10 | Formats learned once; then content and linking words practised weekly |
With literature worth as much as everything else in the paper combined, the student who can retell every story yet writes a skimpy answer gives away the most. Two marked literature answers a week usually do more than an extra stack of grammar worksheets.
The Uttarakhand Board of School Education, based at Ramnagar in Nainital district, runs the High School and Intermediate examinations and sets its own English syllabus. We keep our advice on its papers general, because the board decides and revises them. A tutor for a UBSE student should teach from the prescribed books, practise with the question banks and model answer sheets on the board's website, explain in Hindi where that helps until English can take over, and take formats and dates only from the official site. Our Uttarakhand board tutor in Dehradun page covers the other subjects.
Most English requests are really about one skill. Naming it in your message changes which tutor we suggest:
| Weak skill | What you notice | What lessons should look like |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Answers drift away from the passage | Underlining evidence before writing; one timed passage each week |
| Writing | Correct format, little to say | Planning in points first, then a paragraph that links them |
| Grammar | The same errors in every composition | A personal error list, revisited until each pattern disappears |
| Literature | Knows the plot, writes two lines | Answer frames: claim, reference to the text, explanation |
| Speaking | Understands but rarely answers aloud | Short spoken summaries, building to talks and question practice |
Speaking is not an extra: listening and speaking carry marks on CBSE, ICSE and ISC alike. If fluent conversation matters to you beyond the exam, put that in the request, because it changes the tutor we look for; our spoken English guide for students explains what helps.
A student changing medium, for example when moving to a new school or into Class 11, needs a tutor who can explain in both languages at first and then deliberately let the Hindi go. Four steps make that bridge:
For Classes 1 to 5, English tuition is about becoming a reader. Signs of trouble are easy to spot: words guessed from the first letter, a finger that jumps lines, a book quietly put away. The cure is little and often. The child decodes unfamiliar words, reads aloud while the tutor corrects without fuss, then tells the story back in fresh sentences. Keep sessions brief and focused. In homes where English is seldom heard, a tutor who chats about pictures and simple stories in English, slipping into Hindi only to unblock a word, trains the ear as well as the eye. A primary specialist suits this stage better than a board-exam tutor.
CBSE English Core in Class 11 splits the paper three ways: reading 26, grammar with creative writing 23, and literature 31, using Hornbill and Snapshots. By Class 12 the grammar section has gone and literature takes a larger share. The ISC language paper sets a composition of 400 to 450 words (six topics to pick from), a piece of directed writing and a proposal; literature is examined in a paper of its own. IGCSE families should confirm the entry, First Language or Second Language, with the school, and IB students prepare for unseen analysis and an individual oral. Because tutors for these courses are scarcer, online lessons often fill the gap. The national English home tutor guide goes into each course in more depth.
With the proposed Metro Neo still only a plan, every tutor comes by road on a two-wheeler, in an auto or by car, which is why a tutor from your own side of the city tends to stay reliable. The Dehradun home tuition page lists every locality.
On Rajpur Road, houses behind the shopping frontage mean arrival at the door, and the lower stretch is busiest at evening shopping time, so start early. Karanpur's builder floors sit among shops and colleges; a shop name or lane number makes the first visit easy, and many tutors already live close by.
Both have many gated complexes. Give the guard the tutor's name and flat number before the demo, and ask whether a regular pass can follow. Tutors from Jakhan, Kishanpur or Canal Road have the simplest journeys; avoid office closing time on the lower Sahastradhara Road.
Further out along Raipur Road, fewer tutors live close by, so a tutor from Dalanwala or Karanpur, or an online class, is often the answer. Jogiwala's chowk links the Haridwar highway and the ring road, letting tutors from Nehru Colony arrive without crossing the centre.
The Sahastradhara and Raipur zone guide and the Dehradun home tuition guide add more local detail.
From roughly Class 3 onwards, screen lessons hold up well, provided the tutor sees the written work in advance, whether as notebook photos or in a shared file. Going online also brings in ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists from other parts of the valley or other cities. Visits at home remain the better choice for beginners learning to read, for a child early in a change of medium, and for speaking practice that flourishes in person. If the tutor who suits you lives on the far side of Dehradun, a weekly visit plus a weekly screen lesson balances the two, and the screen lesson can stand in for the visit on a stormy monsoon evening. Our home tutor or online tutor article weighs the options, and the online tutor in Dehradun page explains how online matching works here.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor decides a rate based on the class and board, familiarity with that paper, the journey at your chosen hour and the number of weekly lessons. The shortlist shows every fee ahead of the demo; the Dehradun home tuition fees article explains more.
For a shortlist, tell us your child's class and board, the English skill that concerns you, the language your child feels most at home in, your locality with a landmark, the days and hours that work, and what you would like to spend. Two or three matched tutors come back with their fees. Anyone joining NXTutors as a tutor goes through an ID check before the profile is marked Verified. Dehradun pages for maths and science tutors cover other subjects, and local English teachers looking for students can open Dehradun tuition jobs.

Yes. The tutors we suggest work from the prescribed books and use the question banks and model answer sheets that the Uttarakhand Board of School Education publishes on ubse.uk.gov.in. The board sets and revises its own papers, so formats and dates should always be taken from that official site.
Literature: 40 of the 80 board marks come from First Flight and Footprints without Feet. Reading is worth 20, and grammar and writing 10 each, the writing shared between an analytical paragraph and a formal letter. Another 20 marks are internal, with listening and speaking worth 5 of them.
Yes. Ask for a tutor who explains in both languages at first, then shifts the lessons fully into English by an agreed date, often after the first term. Two-way translation, daily reading at home and ready phrases for letters and literature answers make the change much smoother.
Yes. Speaking already earns marks on CBSE, ICSE and ISC, so it sits comfortably inside board preparation. If confident conversation is a goal in itself, say so when you ask, and we will look for a tutor who builds it step by step, from spoken summaries towards short talks.
ISC sets two three-hour papers of 80 marks, each with project work: one for language, including a 400 to 450 word composition chosen from six topics, directed writing and a proposal, and one for literature. CBSE English Core uses a single paper, with listening, speaking and a project marked internally.
For most children from Class 3 upwards, provided the tutor receives written work ahead of each lesson. Going online also reaches ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists outside your area. Beginning readers tend to progress faster at home, and a weekly visit can move online on stormy monsoon evenings.
