Most students do not lose social science marks because they have not read the chapter. They lose them on answer writing: a five-mark answer with two points, a case-based question answered from memory instead of from the source, or a map left half done. A good SST tutor teaches the content and then trains those habits. Through NXTutors you can find a social science tutor for CBSE or ICSE, Classes 6 to 10, at home in Gurugram or online across India; we shortlist two or three tutors, you see their fees first, and the first class is a free demo. This guide sets out how the CBSE Class 10 paper is built for 2026-27, what ICSE students sit, and how to divide tutoring time across history, geography, political science and economics.
CBSE Social Science (subject code 087) is an 80-mark board paper plus 20 marks of internal assessment. The 80 marks split evenly across four NCERT-based parts.
| Part | NCERT book | Marks | Points to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| History | India and the Contemporary World – II | 20 (18 + 2 map) | The Making of a Global World is examined only up to subtopic 1.3; The Age of Industrialisation is for periodic assessment only |
| Geography | Contemporary India – II | 20 (17 + 3 map) | Lifelines of National Economy is examined through map pointing only |
| Political Science | Democratic Politics – II | 20 | Power-sharing, federalism, gender, religion and caste, political parties, outcomes of democracy |
| Economics | Understanding Economic Development | 20 | Globalisation is examined only in part; Consumer Rights is project work |
Two consequences for tutoring. First, the paper rewards balance: a student who is strong in history but weak in economics cannot make up 20 marks elsewhere. Second, some chapters are assessed in school, not in the board paper, so a tutor should know exactly which parts of which chapters to prioritise for the board.
| Type | Number × marks | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice, including assertion–reason | 20 × 1 | 20 |
| Short answers | 4 × 2 | 8 |
| Short-long answers | 5 × 3 | 15 |
| Case-based questions | 3 × 4 | 12 |
| Long answers | 4 × 5 | 20 |
| Map pointing | – | 5 |
The competency weights matter even more than the question types. CBSE's design gives 30% of marks to remembering and understanding, 13.25% to applying, 6.25% to map skill, and 50% to analysing, evaluating and creating. Half the paper asks a student to explain causes, compare, judge or use a source, not to recall a list. Rote learning alone caps the mark.
The school awards the 20 internal marks in four parts of 5: a periodic pen-and-paper test; a "multiple assessment" such as a quiz, debate or role play built around an interdisciplinary project; a subject-enrichment project on consumer rights, social issues or sustainable development; and a portfolio of classwork and reflections. A tutor can help a student plan the project and keep the portfolio up to date, but the work is the student's own and is judged by the school.
The 2026-27 curriculum publishes the map list, so map work is the most predictable part of the paper. It includes, for example:
| Chapter | To locate or identify |
|---|---|
| Nationalism in India (History) | Congress sessions of 1920 (Calcutta, Nagpur) and 1927 (Madras); the Kheda, Champaran and Ahmedabad mill workers satyagrahas; Jallianwala Bagh; the Dandi March |
| Water Resources | Dams such as Salal, Sardar Sarovar, Bhakra Nangal, Hirakund and Tehri |
| Minerals and Energy Resources | Iron ore mines, coal mines and oil fields named in the list |
| Lifelines of National Economy | Major sea ports and international airports (map pointing only) |
Use the full list in CBSE's curriculum document rather than a guidebook's version, and practise on a blank outline map every week.
In ICSE, History, Civics and Geography is a compulsory subject. For the 2027 examination, the History and Civics paper (H.C.G. Paper 1) is one 2-hour paper of 80 marks with 20 marks of internal assessment, and Geography is examined separately. That is two exams in what CBSE students call one subject, each needing its own revision plan. ICSE students with a weak spot in one paper often benefit from a tutor who focuses on that paper rather than covering everything.
This is the part of social science that changes marks fastest, and it is easy to practise one-to-one.
Online works well for this subject: answers are written on paper and shared as photos, and maps can be printed and marked live on camera. See online tuition on NXTutors for how classes run.
A five-mark long answer is where structure pays most. A frame that tutors drill until it is automatic:
The same frame scales down: three points for a three-mark answer, two for a two-mark answer. Writing more points than the marks rarely earns more, and costs time needed elsewhere in the paper.
| Part | What usually goes wrong | What the tutor drills |
|---|---|---|
| History | Events remembered without causes; sequence muddled | Timelines, cause-and-effect chains, source-based reading, the history map items |
| Geography | Map points left out; data questions skipped | Weekly map practice, reading tables and graphs, the chapters examined in the board paper |
| Political Science | Answers written as opinions | Definitions in the textbook's terms, then examples and comparisons |
| Economics | Terms confused (sectors, credit, development indicators) | Short glossaries, simple worked comparisons, case-based questions |
Because each part carries 20 board marks, a tutor who spends a month on the weakest part usually adds more to the total than one who revises all four evenly.
Usually not for content alone, but sometimes for habits. A Class 6 to 8 student who writes one-line answers, or who finds the reading heavy, gains from a few months of guided reading and answer practice. In Class 9 the subject gets harder, and CBSE's Class 9 Social Science curriculum for 2026-27 is aligned with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, with more emphasis on inquiry and discussion than on memorising. A tutor who builds reasoning in Class 9 makes the Class 10 analysis questions much easier. For the board year as a whole, see online tuition for Class 10.
Tell us the class, the board (CBSE or ICSE), the parts that are weakest and whether you want home or online classes. In Gurugram, see social science tutors in Gurgaon. We shortlist two or three tutors, you see each fee before the demo, the first class is free, and switching tutor later is free. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Many students take SST alongside maths or science tuition; book a free demo class to start.
It is an 80-mark board paper plus 20 internal marks. History, geography, political science and economics carry 20 board marks each, with map pointing inside the history and geography marks. CBSE gives half the paper to analysing, evaluating and creating, so explaining causes and using sources matters as much as remembering facts.
For 2026-27 the paper has 20 one-mark multiple-choice questions, including assertion-reason, four 2-mark answers, five 3-mark answers, three 4-mark case-based questions, four 5-mark long answers and 5 marks of map pointing. A tutor should practise each type, especially case-based and long answers, where structure decides the mark.
Often, if marks are lost on answer writing rather than knowledge. A tutor trains points-to-marks structure, case-based reading, command words and weekly map practice, and marks answers the way a board examiner would. If a student only needs to cover the syllabus, a plan and regular self-testing may be enough.
It is a compulsory ICSE subject. For the 2027 examination, the History and Civics paper is one 2-hour paper of 80 marks with 20 internal marks, and Geography is examined separately. ICSE students therefore prepare for two exams in this subject, and a tutor can focus on whichever paper is weaker.
Yes, it suits online well. Students write answers on paper and share photos for marking, maps can be printed and marked live on camera, and case-based passages are easy to share on screen. Many families combine online SST with home or online maths and science tuition.
