Biology home tutor: a guide for Classes 9 to 12, NEET, IGCSE and IB

Biology has a reputation as the "easy" science: no heavy calculations, just learning. Students who believe that usually find out in Class 11 that it is not true. Senior biology is a large body of precise terms, processes and diagrams, examined through data, experiments and application questions, and in NEET it carries half the paper. A good biology tutor does not simply help a student memorise more; they build understanding that makes recall reliable and teach the student to answer the way examiners mark. This guide covers what changes from Class 9 to Class 12, how CBSE, ISC, NEET, Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE and the IB examine the subject, and how to choose a biology tutor. Aaditya Kashyap writes on CBSE and ICSE science up to Class 10; the senior, NEET and international sections are by the NXTutors Academic Team.

Why biology needs its own kind of tutoring

Physics and chemistry marks are lost mostly in method and calculation. Biology marks are lost in different places, and a tutor needs to know where:

  • Precise language. Examiners look for specific terms. "The cell gets bigger" and "the cell increases in volume by osmosis" are not worth the same marks, and a student who understands the idea but writes loosely loses marks on every paper.
  • Diagrams. Labelled diagrams of a flower, a nephron or a heart are asked for directly, and drawing one well is also the fastest way to learn the structure.
  • Processes in sequence. Photosynthesis, respiration, protein synthesis, the menstrual cycle and the nerve impulse all have steps that must come in the right order with the right cause and effect.
  • Data and experiments. Every board now asks students to read a graph, interpret an experiment, identify variables or suggest an improvement. Students who only read the textbook find these questions hardest.
  • Volume. Senior biology has a lot of content. Without a revision system, a student who understood a chapter in July cannot recall it in February.

Biology tuition stage by stage

What a biology tutor should focus on at each stage
StageHow biology is taughtWhat the tutor should do
Classes 6 to 8Part of general scienceBuild curiosity and the habit of labelled diagrams; a science tutor covers it
Classes 9 and 10, CBSEBiology chapters inside the single Science paperNCERT depth, diagrams, case-based questions; usually one science tutor for all three sciences
Classes 9 and 10, ICSEBiology as its own paper, with its own internal assessmentDetailed diagrams and precise definitions; a biology specialist often helps
Classes 11 and 12, CBSE or ISCA full subject with theory and practical examinationsConcepts, board answer-writing, practical records and projects
NEETBiology is half the paperLine-by-line NCERT command, objective question practice, error analysis
IGCSE (Grades 9 and 10)Cambridge 0610 or Edexcel 4BI1Command words, data questions, practical skills
IB DiplomaBiology SL or HLConcept links across themes, data analysis, support around the scientific investigation

For Classes 6 to 10, where biology is taught within science, start from our science home tutor guide and the Class 10 science page. The rest of this guide is about biology as a separate subject.

CBSE biology in Classes 11 and 12

CBSE Biology (subject code 044) has a three-hour theory paper of 70 marks and a practical examination of 30 marks in each year. The unit weights in CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum show where the marks sit:

CBSE Biology theory unit weights, 2026-27 (70 marks each year)
Class 11 unitMarksClass 12 unitMarks
Diversity of Living Organisms15Reproduction16
Structural Organisation in Plants and Animals10Genetics and Evolution20
Cell: Structure and Function15Biology and Human Welfare12
Plant Physiology12Biotechnology and its Applications12
Human Physiology18Ecology and Environment10

For Class 12, CBSE's question paper design puts about 50% of marks on knowledge and understanding, 30% on application and 20% on analysing, evaluating and creating, with question types ranging from multiple choice and assertion-reason to long answers and case-based or passage-based questions, and roughly a third of the paper offering internal choice. Genetics and Evolution is the heaviest Class 12 unit and the one where students most often need help, because inheritance problems and molecular genetics demand reasoning, not recall.

The 30 practical marks come from experiments, slide preparation, spotting, the practical record and an investigatory project with viva. They are school-conducted, and a student who keeps the record and project up to date through the year protects marks that are otherwise easy to lose.

ISC biology

CISCE's ISC Biology (863) in Class 12 has a three-hour theory paper of 70 marks, a three-hour practical of 15 marks, project work worth 10 and a practical file worth 5. The theory units are Reproduction (16 marks), Genetics and Evolution (15), Biology and Human Welfare (14), Biotechnology and its Applications (10) and Ecology and Environment (15). The syllabus states that structures are to be taught with diagrams, and ISC answers reward detail: named structures, correct terminology and complete explanations. Students coming from ICSE are used to this style; the jump is in depth and the amount of content.

Biology in NEET (UG)

NEET (UG) is conducted by the National Testing Agency. According to the NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin, the paper had 180 compulsory multiple-choice questions to be answered in 180 minutes: 45 in physics, 45 in chemistry and 90 in biology, split between botany and zoology, for 720 marks in total. A correct answer earned four marks and a wrong answer lost one. Biology therefore carried half the questions and half the marks. The bulletin also uses biology first when breaking ties between candidates with equal scores. The syllabus is notified by the National Medical Commission. Pattern, syllabus and dates are confirmed each year, and the 2027 bulletin had not been released at the time of writing, so check neet.nta.nic.in before relying on any detail.

What this means for tuition: NEET biology rewards exact command of the NCERT textbooks, including diagrams, tables and examples, plus speed and accuracy on objective questions. Negative marking punishes half-remembered facts. A tutor helps most by testing recall line by line, analysing every mock for the chapters and question types that lose marks, and keeping board answer-writing on track at the same time. Our guide to NEET biology with an NCERT-first approach and our article on coaching, a home tutor or both for NEET go further. For the other two sections, see NEET physics tutors and NEET chemistry tutors.

IGCSE biology: Cambridge and Edexcel

Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610) and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology (4BI1) cover similar biology but examine it differently, and a tutor has to prepare for the right one.

IGCSE biology assessment compared
Cambridge 0610 (2026 to 2028)Edexcel 4BI1
TiersCore (grades C to G) or Extended (A* to G)Untiered, grades 9 to 1
PapersMultiple choice (45 minutes, 40 marks, 30%); theory (1 hour 15 minutes, 80 marks, 50%)Paper 1 (2 hours, 110 marks, 61.1%); Paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks, 38.9%)
Practical skillsPaper 5 practical test or Paper 6 alternative to practical, 40 marks, 20%Assessed through questions in the written papers
Content21 topics, from classification and cells to biotechnology and genetic modificationPaper 1 covers the core content; Paper 2 covers all of it, including material found only in the separate-science course

For Cambridge, the alternative to practical paper surprises many students: they must describe methods, read scales, draw results tables and plot graphs without touching apparatus. A tutor who practises these past-paper questions regularly makes a visible difference. Our comparison of Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE covers maths and the other sciences too.

IB Diploma biology

The IB Biology course first assessed in 2025 is organised around four themes, unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change, each studied across levels of organisation from molecules to ecosystems. The recommended teaching time is 150 hours at SL and 240 at HL. Exam papers make up 80% of the grade and the scientific investigation, an individual piece of research, the other 20%.

Because the course is built on themes rather than separate chapters, IB students are expected to connect ideas: to use what they know about cell membranes when answering about nerve impulses, or about evolution when discussing classification. A tutor helps by making those links explicit and by practising data-based questions. For the investigation, a tutor may discuss the research question and challenge the method, but the work must be the student's own. Our parents' guide to IB and IGCSE tutoring explains what support is appropriate.

How good biology tutors teach it

Across boards, the tutors who get results in biology tend to share a few habits:

  1. Explain, then draw, then recall. A new process is explained, the student draws and labels it, and at the next session redraws it from memory before anything new is taught.
  2. Active recall instead of rereading. Short oral quizzes, blank diagrams and flashcards the student writes in their own words. Rereading notes feels productive and rarely is.
  3. Spaced revision. Each chapter comes back after a week, a month and again before exams, so Class 11 content is still there for Class 12 and for NEET.
  4. Command words. "State", "describe", "explain" and "suggest" ask for different answers. Students who learn the difference gain marks on every board.
  5. Data practice. Graphs, tables and experimental set-ups in most sessions from Class 9 onwards, because application questions are where the gap between students is widest.
  6. Marking like an examiner. Answers checked against the mark scheme or marking scheme, point by point, so the student sees exactly which phrase earned or lost the mark.

Signs your child could use a biology tutor

  • Knows it, cannot write it. Your child can explain a process out loud but the written answer loses marks for vague wording or missing steps.
  • Diagrams avoided or copied. Labels in the wrong place, or diagrams left out of answers that ask for them.
  • Data questions left blank. Graph, table and experiment questions skipped or answered from general knowledge instead of from the data given.
  • Everything forgotten by the exam. Good chapter tests but a weak half-yearly or mock, which usually means there is no revision system.
  • Genetics trouble. Crosses, pedigrees and probability in inheritance are a common sticking point in Classes 10 and 12, and often the reason biology marks dip.
  • A new course. The move from Class 10 science to Class 11 biology, from ICSE to ISC, or from IGCSE to the IB, is where a few months of one-to-one help does the most good.

A two-year plan for Classes 11 and 12

Senior biology spans two years of content, and Class 11 chapters return in Class 12 board revision and in NEET. A workable rhythm with a tutor, to adjust to your school's calendar:

  1. Class 11, through the year: keep pace with school, make short notes and diagram sheets for each chapter, and revise every chapter again a month after finishing it.
  2. Class 11, end of year: a full revision of Human Physiology and Cell, which carry heavy weight and underpin Class 12 topics.
  3. Class 12, first half: Genetics and Evolution early and thoroughly, with inheritance problems every week; practical record and project kept current.
  4. Class 12, second half: full papers under time, answer-writing against the marking scheme, and one cycle of Class 11 revision for students also sitting NEET.

What to look for in a biology demo class

The first class is a free demo. Ask for it to be on a chapter your child currently finds hard, and look for:

  • A tutor who starts by asking what the student already knows, and finds the specific gap.
  • A diagram drawn and labelled by the student, not only by the tutor.
  • Knowledge of the exact course: the CBSE unit weights, the ISC practical and project, the NEET pattern, the IGCSE tier and practical paper, or the IB themes and investigation.
  • An answer written by the student and corrected for terminology and structure, not only for facts.
  • A plan for the next few weeks, including how revision of earlier chapters will happen.

If the tutor is not the right fit, tell us and we arrange a demo with the next one on the shortlist. Switching later is free too.

Home or online biology tuition?

Biology works well online for most senior students: diagrams can be drawn on a tablet or shown to a camera, and past-paper and mock analysis suit a shared screen. Home tuition suits students who drift on a screen, younger students, and families who want the tutor to see practical records and project work on paper. For NEET and IB, where specialists are fewer, online widens the choice considerably. Many families use a hybrid: one home session a week, with online sessions for tests and doubt-clearing.

What a biology home tutor costs

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Biology tuition for Class 11 and 12, NEET, IGCSE and IB generally sits in that upper part of the range. Tutors set their own fees, and you see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo. Biology Home Tutors for Classes 9–12, NEET, IGCSE and IB: common questions

Does my child need a separate biology tutor or a science tutor?

Up to Class 10 on CBSE, biology is part of the single Science paper, so one science tutor for all three sciences usually works. ICSE students sit biology as its own paper and often benefit from a specialist. From Class 11, and for NEET, IGCSE or IB, a tutor who teaches biology as a subject is the better match.

How is CBSE Class 12 biology marked?

CBSE Biology has a three-hour theory paper of 70 marks and a practical examination of 30 marks. In the 2026-27 curriculum, Class 12 theory weights are Reproduction 16, Genetics and Evolution 20, Biology and Human Welfare 12, Biotechnology 12 and Ecology and Environment 10. Practical marks include experiments, spotting, the record and an investigatory project.

How much of NEET is biology?

In the NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin, biology (botany and zoology) had 90 of the 180 questions, or 360 of the 720 marks, with four marks for a correct answer and one deducted for a wrong one. NTA confirms the pattern each year, and the 2027 bulletin had not been released at the time of writing.

Can a biology home tutor help with NEET alongside coaching?

Yes. Many NEET students attend coaching and use a tutor to fix specific chapters, test NCERT recall line by line and analyse mock tests for patterns of lost marks. The tutor should also keep Class 11 and 12 board answer-writing on track, since the board papers and NEET share most of the biology content.

What is the difference between Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE biology?

Cambridge 0610 is tiered (Core or Extended) and has a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical or alternative-to-practical paper worth 20%. Edexcel 4BI1 is untiered, graded 9 to 1, with two written papers and practical skills assessed inside them. Ask the school which one your child sits before a tutor starts.

Can a tutor help with the IB Biology internal assessment?

A tutor can explain the assessment criteria, discuss the research question, challenge the method and help with data analysis skills in general. The scientific investigation, worth 20% of the IB Biology grade, must be the student's own work, so the tutor must not plan, write or edit it for them.

How much does a biology tutor cost?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour, with Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET toward the upper end, which is where most biology tuition sits. The fee also depends on the tutor's experience, travel and frequency. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the free demo.

Is online biology tuition effective?

For most students from Class 9 upwards, yes. Diagrams can be drawn on a tablet or shown to a camera, and mock-test and past-paper analysis suit a shared screen. Online also widens the choice of NEET, IGCSE and IB specialists. Students who lose focus on screens, or who want help with practical records on paper, may prefer home sessions.
