Chemistry home tutor: a parent's guide to boards, branches and choosing well

Chemistry is really three subjects sharing one textbook. Physical chemistry is numericals and graphs, organic chemistry is reactions that follow a logic of their own, and inorganic chemistry is a large body of facts and trends that must be remembered accurately. Most students are comfortable with one of the three and quietly struggling with another, which is why chemistry marks so often plateau in Class 11 and 12. This guide explains how chemistry changes from stage to stage and board to board, how a good chemistry home tutor teaches each branch, what to look for in a demo class, and how to decide between home and online tuition.

Why so many students struggle with chemistry

In Class 9 and 10, chemistry is one part of science. Chapters are short, equations are simple and a few evenings of revision before a test usually works. Then Class 11 arrives and chemistry becomes a full subject with two thick textbooks, a practical exam and, for many students, an entrance exam as well. Three problems show up again and again:

  • The mole concept never quite clicked. Almost every numerical in physical chemistry, from stoichiometry to solutions and electrochemistry, is a mole calculation in disguise. A student who is shaky here struggles everywhere.
  • Organic is memorised, not understood. Students try to learn every reaction as a separate fact. It works for a few chapters and then collapses under the sheer number of conversions.
  • Inorganic is left to the end. Because it feels like "just reading", it is postponed until the last month, when there is no time to learn it properly.

A one-to-one chemistry tutor fixes all three far more efficiently than a class of forty can. They can find the exact point where a student's understanding broke, rebuild it, and set a steady rhythm of practice across all three branches rather than whichever one the school happens to be teaching that month.

Chemistry by stage: what changes from Class 9 to Class 12

What a chemistry tutor does depends heavily on the stage. The same tutor may be the right person for Class 12 boards and the wrong one for a Class 9 student who simply needs confidence.

StageWhat chemistry looks likeWhat a tutor should focus on
Classes 9 and 10Chemistry is part of science: atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids and bases, metals, carbon compoundsBalancing equations, writing formulae correctly, a first honest grip on the mole, and the habit of explaining observations
Class 11A separate subject for the first time, with physical, organic and inorganic chemistry all introduced in one yearMole concept, atomic structure, bonding and the basics of organic mechanisms. Class 11 is the foundation for everything after it
Class 12Board year: solutions, electrochemistry, kinetics, d- and f-block, coordination compounds and the major organic familiesOrganic conversions, physical numericals under time, accurate inorganic recall, practicals and full papers
Entrance examsNEET and JEE draw on the Class 11 and 12 syllabus with objective questions under severe time pressureSpeed, accuracy, and the Class 11 topics that school often rushes

For Classes 9 and 10, chemistry usually sits inside a combined science tutor's work; our guide to a Class 10 science tutor covers that stage. From Class 11, a specialist chemistry tutor is worth it. We have separate, detailed guides for Class 11 chemistry, Class 12 chemistry and NEET chemistry.

Chemistry by board: CBSE, ISC, IB and IGCSE

The chemistry is largely the same across boards. What differs is how it is examined, and that changes what a tutor needs to practise with the student.

BoardHow chemistry is assessedWhat that means for tuition
CBSE (Classes 11 and 12)70-mark, three-hour theory paper plus 30 marks of practical assessment. The 2026-27 curriculum weights the theory paper 40% remembering and understanding, 30% applying and 30% analysing, evaluating and creatingNCERT is the base, but 60% of the paper asks the student to apply and analyse, so textbook reading alone is not enough
ISC (Classes 11 and 12)Class 12: a 70-mark, three-hour theory paper, a 15-mark practical paper, 10 marks for project work and 5 for the practical fileBroader and more descriptive in places than CBSE; answers need full working and careful chemical language
IB DiplomaA course built around Structure and Reactivity, examined through Paper 1A (multiple choice), Paper 1B (data-based), Paper 2, and an internally assessed scientific investigation worth 20%Data analysis and experimental thinking matter as much as content; the internal assessment needs guidance, not a ghost-writer
Cambridge IGCSE (0620)Core or Extended tier; a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and either a practical test or a written alternative to practicalTier choice is important, and practical-skills questions need regular practice even for students who do the lab test

A CBSE tutor who has never seen an IB Paper 1B, or an IB tutor unfamiliar with NCERT's organic chapters, will teach good chemistry but miss marks. Always ask about the specific board. International-board families in Gurugram can see our dedicated page for an IB and IGCSE chemistry tutor in Gurgaon.

The three branches, and how each should be taught

A good chemistry tutor does not teach the three branches the same way, because they are learned differently.

Physical chemistry: numericals

Mole concept, thermodynamics, equilibrium, solutions, electrochemistry and kinetics. This is applied maths: formulae, units, logarithms and graphs. It is taught like maths, with a worked example, then the student solving while the tutor watches every line. Units are written at every step, because a lost factor of 1,000 between grams and kilograms or millilitres and litres is the most common error in the subject.

Organic chemistry: mechanisms and reactions

Organic makes sense once a student understands why electrons move: inductive and resonance effects, carbocation stability, nucleophiles and electrophiles. A tutor who teaches these ideas first turns hundreds of reactions into a handful of patterns. After that comes daily practice of conversions, where the student must get from one compound to another in two or three steps.

Inorganic chemistry: recall and trends

Periodic trends, bonding exceptions, d- and f-block properties and coordination compounds. For CBSE and NEET, the NCERT text is the source, often line by line. A tutor makes recall stick with trend tables, short daily quizzes and spaced revision, and explains the reason behind each trend so that exceptions stand out.

The balance shifts across the two years. Class 11 is heavy on physical chemistry and the foundations of organic; Class 12 is heavy on organic families and on coordination compounds. A tutor should say at the start which branch your child is weakest in and how the weekly plan reflects it.

Signs your child needs a chemistry tutor

Chemistry trouble is often invisible until a test result arrives, because students can read a chapter, nod along and still be unable to use it. These are the early signs worth acting on:

  • Numericals are skipped in homework and tests. The student attempts the theory questions and leaves the calculations, usually because the mole concept or unit conversions are not secure.
  • Organic answers are guessed. Asked for the product of a reaction, the student writes something plausible rather than working it out from the reagent.
  • Marks fall sharply from Class 10 science. A student who scored well in Class 10 and then drops badly in the first Class 11 test is not suddenly weak; the jump in depth has caught them out, and early help repairs it quickly.
  • Revision means re-reading. Students who revise inorganic chemistry by reading the chapter again rarely remember it a week later. They need a recall routine.
  • The practical file is a worry. Salt analysis flowcharts and titration readings that do not make sense to the student are a sign the underlying chemistry needs attention.

What a good chemistry tutoring session looks like

Most effective chemistry tutors use a similar shape for an hour, whether at home or online:

  1. Quick recall. Five minutes of questions from all three branches: a periodic trend, a named reaction, one short numerical. This keeps older chapters alive.
  2. Homework review. The student explains one answer aloud. A wrong numerical is traced back to the exact line where it went wrong.
  3. New material. One concept or one reaction family, taught through reasoning, with the student trying a question straight away.
  4. Exam-style practice. Questions in the format of your child's actual board or exam, marked the way the examiner would mark them.
  5. Close. Homework set, the next topic named, and a short note to the parent on progress and anything to watch.

Over a month, you should see all three branches appear, even if the school is teaching only one of them. A chemistry tutor who spends eight weeks only on the chapter being taught in school is following, not staying ahead.

Chemistry home tutor for Class 12th

Most families search for a chemistry tutor in Class 12, often after a disappointing Class 11 result. The CBSE Class 12 theory paper for 2026-27 covers ten units, and the marks are spread fairly evenly:

BranchCBSE Class 12 units (2026-27)Marks
PhysicalSolutions (7), Electrochemistry (9), Chemical Kinetics (7)23
Inorganicd- and f-Block Elements (7), Coordination Compounds (7)14
OrganicHaloalkanes and Haloarenes (6), Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers (6), Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids (8), Amines (6), Biomolecules (7)33
Theory total70

Organic chemistry is close to half the Class 12 theory paper, which is why a Class 12 chemistry tutor who is strong in organic is worth looking for. It also builds directly on Class 11 organic basics, so a student who skipped those will need a few weeks of repair first. The practical exam is worth another 30 marks and is easy to neglect; a tutor should make sure salt analysis and titration calculations are secure well before it.

Our Class 12 chemistry tutor guide goes unit by unit, with a month-by-month plan, and our article on CBSE Class 12 organic and inorganic chemistry has chapter-level revision notes.

Chemistry for NEET and JEE

Chemistry is often called the most scoring section of both NEET and JEE, but only for students who are accurate. Entrance chemistry rewards speed with numericals, instant recall of inorganic facts and the ability to spot a reaction pattern in seconds.

  • NEET. Chemistry is 45 compulsory multiple-choice questions for 180 marks, with four marks for a correct answer and one deducted for a wrong one, according to the NTA's NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin. The questions stay close to NCERT, particularly in inorganic chemistry.
  • JEE. JEE chemistry asks for more depth in physical chemistry and organic mechanisms and more multi-step reasoning. Our JEE chemistry preparation guide covers it branch by branch.

Most entrance students already attend coaching. A home tutor's role then is different: clearing doubts the coaching class moved past, catching up on a missed module, and running the student through test analysis. Our NEET chemistry tutor guide describes how that works week to week. Students preparing for engineering entrances usually need help in physics too; see our guide to a physics home tutor.

How to choose a chemistry home tutor

The right tutor depends on the student. A tutor who suits a Class 12 student aiming for 95 is not necessarily the right one for a Class 11 student who has lost confidence. Use the free demo class to check the things that actually predict results:

  • Ask which branch they would start with, and why. A good tutor will want to see some of your child's recent test papers first and will name the weak branch within a session or two.
  • Watch a numerical being solved. In the demo, ask for a physical chemistry numerical. The tutor should make the student solve it and should insist on units and significant figures, not race through it on the board.
  • Ask them to explain one organic reaction without notes. If they explain it through electron movement and effects rather than "just remember it", organic will become easier for your child.
  • Check board and syllabus knowledge. Ask which topics are in this year's CBSE theory paper and which are assessed only in school. For 2026-27, CBSE lists some chapters, such as the s- and p-block elements in Class 11 and surface chemistry in Class 12, for formative assessment only. A current tutor will know this.
  • Ask about practicals. Can they help with salt analysis logic, titration calculations and the viva? These are marks a student should not lose.
  • Ask for a plan. By the end of the first week the tutor should be able to say what will be covered before the half-yearly exams and when full-length papers will start.
  • Notice how your child reacts. A student who is afraid to ask questions will not improve, however qualified the tutor.

At NXTutors we send you two or three matched tutors for each request so that you can compare, and the first class with the one you choose is a free demo. If the tutor turns out not to be right later in the year, switching is free.

Chemistry home tutor near me, or online?

Searching for a chemistry home tutor near you makes sense when a student benefits from someone sitting beside them: to keep a notebook organised, to check every line of a numerical and to keep a distracted student on task. Home tuition also suits families who want a fixed routine in the house.

Online chemistry tuition works very well for older students, particularly in Class 12 and for entrance preparation. It opens up a much wider choice of experienced tutors, removes travel time and makes late-evening doubt sessions possible. It needs two things: a writing tablet or a camera on the student's notebook so the tutor can see the working, and a student disciplined enough to sit at a screen for an hour.

Many families choose a hybrid, with one home session a week for supervised practice and one or two online sessions for new topics and doubts. Our article on online versus offline tutoring goes into the trade-offs. If you live in Gurugram, see our page for a chemistry home tutor in Gurgaon; elsewhere, browse tutors by city.

Chemistry tuition fees and how often to book

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For chemistry the fee depends mainly on the level being taught (school board, IB or entrance), the tutor's experience with that board or exam, home or online sessions, travel in your area and the number of sessions a week. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo class, and our pricing guide explains the factors.

SituationTypical frequency
Class 11 or 12, steady support through the yearTwo sessions a week
Class 12, final three months before boardsThree sessions a week
Alongside NEET or JEE coachingOne or two sessions a week focused on doubts and test analysis
IB or IGCSE, with internal assessment or coursework dueTwo sessions a week, with extra time near deadlines

More sessions are not always better. Chemistry needs time for the student to practise alone, and a tutor who fills every evening leaves none.

Chemistry Home Tutors for Class 11, 12 & NEET: common questions

What does a chemistry home tutor cost per hour in India?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For chemistry, the level (school board, IB or entrance), the tutor's experience with that board or exam, home or online sessions, travel and sessions a week move the fee. You see each shortlisted fee before the free demo.

How does NXTutors shortlist a chemistry home tutor for my child?

NXTutors shortlists a chemistry home tutor, or an online one anywhere in India, from your child's class, board, any entrance exam, area, slots and budget. We send two or three matched tutors, each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.

Why do so many students struggle with chemistry in Class 11 and 12?

Most students in India struggle with Class 11 and 12 chemistry because the mole concept never clicked, organic is memorised, and inorganic is left to the end. A one-to-one tutor finds where understanding broke and sets steady practice across all three branches.

How should a tutor teach physical, organic and inorganic chemistry differently?

A chemistry tutor should teach physical chemistry like maths, organic through electron movement, and inorganic through recall routines. Physical numericals need units at every step while the student solves. Organic turns into a handful of patterns once inductive and resonance effects are clear. Inorganic sticks through trend tables, daily quizzes and spaced revision.

How is chemistry examined differently by CBSE, ISC, IB and IGCSE?

Chemistry content is similar across CBSE, ISC, IB and IGCSE, but each examines it differently. CBSE has a 70-mark paper plus 30 practical marks; ISC Class 12 adds a 15-mark practical, 10 project and 5 file marks. IB uses Papers 1A, 1B and 2 plus a 20% investigation; IGCSE 0620 has Core or Extended tiers.

Do NXTutors chemistry tutors teach Class 12 students?

Yes, NXTutors chemistry tutors teach Class 12 students, matched separately for CBSE, ISC, IB and IGCSE, and for NEET or JEE alongside boards. For CBSE Class 12, organic chemistry is 33 of the 70 theory marks, so we look for tutors strong in organic as well as physical numericals.

What are the early signs my child needs a chemistry tutor?

The early signs your child needs a chemistry tutor are skipped numericals, guessed organic products and a sharp fall from Class 10 science marks. Revising inorganic by rereading, and a practical file the student cannot explain, are other signals. Acting early in Class 11 repairs the gap quickly.

How do I judge a chemistry tutor in the free demo class?

Judge a chemistry tutor in the free demo by asking for a physical chemistry numerical with your child doing the working, insisting on units. Ask them to explain one organic reaction without notes, through electron movement. Check they know which topics CBSE assesses only in school this year, and notice whether your child asks questions.

How often should a student book chemistry tuition?

Most Class 11 and 12 chemistry students book two sessions a week, rising to three in the last three months before boards. Alongside NEET or JEE coaching, one or two sessions a week on doubts and test analysis usually suit. More sessions are not always better, because chemistry needs time to practise alone.

Should I choose a chemistry home tutor near me or an online tutor?

Choose a chemistry home tutor near you if your child needs someone beside them to check every line and stay on task; choose online for Class 12 or entrance preparation. Online opens a wider choice of experienced tutors across India and makes late doubt sessions possible, but needs a tablet or notebook camera.

Can I ask for a woman chemistry tutor?

Yes, you can ask for a woman chemistry tutor at home or online, and we shortlist women tutors where available. Tell us when you share your requirement. Being flexible on timing, or open to online sessions, increases the number of good options.
