How big is chemistry in each exam your child may sit?

Schools in Gangtok follow CBSE or CISCE, so Class 12 chemistry is usually a CBSE or ISC paper, sometimes with an entrance exam alongside. Each counts and rewards something different.

• CBSE Class 12 (043). A three-hour theory paper of 70 marks, 33 compulsory questions in five lettered sections, plus a 30-mark practical. It rewards written reasons, balanced equations and clean numericals.
• ISC Class 12. CISCE pairs the theory paper with practical work and a project, and good answers explain more than a single line.
• NEET (UG), 2026 pattern. 45 of the 180 questions, worth 180 of 720 marks, answered on paper. Fast, exact recall of NCERT statements decides it.
• JEE Main, 2026 Paper 1. A third of the 75 questions: twenty with options and five needing a numerical answer. Mechanisms and multi-step physical chemistry matter most.

CBSE Class 12 chemistry: marks chapter by chapter

CBSE fixes the theory marks for each chapter, which makes a tutor's plan easy to check. In the 2026-27 curriculum, with the paper design carried over from last session, the ten chapters are worth:

Organic chemistry alone is close to half the paper. No calculator or log table is allowed, a few questions offer an internal choice, and only about two-fifths of the marks test recall and understanding; the rest ask the student to apply, analyse or evaluate. Taken out, or left to the school: and why entrance students should be careful

For 2026-27, two areas are out of CBSE Class 12 altogether: the solid state, and Groups 15 to 18 of the p-block. Four more are taught but assessed only in school, never on the board paper: surface chemistry, the isolation of elements from ores, polymers, and chemistry in everyday life.

That board list is not the entrance list. NTA releases the NEET and JEE syllabi separately, and some material the board has dropped can still be examined there. Use the board list for board revision only, and check the current entrance syllabus before your child stops studying anything.

What a home tutor should do in each branch

End every session with two board-style "give reasons" questions, corrected before the tutor leaves, so written answers keep pace with objective practice. The 30-mark practical: more can be prepared at home than you might think

Titration and salt analysis carry 8 marks each, an experiment linked to theory content 6, and 4 each go to the project and to the record and viva together. This session's titration uses a permanganate solution against oxalic acid or Mohr's salt (ferrous ammonium sulphate), and every student weighs and makes up the standard solution personally.

The glassware stays at school, but at home a tutor can rehearse the molarity working for a weighed sample, the table of burette readings leading to the result, the logic of salt analysis from preliminary to confirmatory tests, a project the student can manage honestly, and viva favourites such as why permanganate needs no separate indicator.

ISC, IB and IGCSE chemistry

ISC students need a tutor who knows the syllabus for their exam year and writes fuller answers than the NCERT style. IB Diploma chemistry is offered at SL and HL and organised under two themes, structure and reactivity; the scientific investigation is the student's own work, and a tutor may ask questions about it but not shape it. Pani House

A hillside locality along the National Highway, mainly residential, with homes above and below the road and few shops. The highway makes it simple to reach by shared taxi, but many homes are reached by steps or footpaths, so describe the route from the nearest stop. The highway carries heavy through traffic, so leave some margin in the evening.

Ranipool

A junction town where three routes meet, with frequent taxis and buses and a mix of newer flats and older houses. It is one of the fringe areas where most new building is happening. Pick a slot away from the junction's peak hours.

Syari

Primarily residential, with a large amount of government staff housing and few shops. Share the block and quarter number, and expect the tutor to call on arrival or give a name at the colony entrance. Traffic comes in through Deorali junction, so a tutor who lives in Syari or Deorali is the easiest evening match.

Bojoghari

A suburb named in the city plan among the areas around the bypass that can take some of Gangtok's growth. Homes climb the slopes beside the roads; give a landmark and a phone number, and look first at tutors from Chandmari, Tathangchen or Sichey.
