Class 11 chemistry is where the subject stops being a section of science and becomes a discipline of its own. In a single year students meet the mole concept in full, quantum numbers, hybridisation, Gibbs energy, pH and buffers, and the first organic reaction mechanisms. There is no board exam at the end of it, which is exactly why it is so often under-prepared, and why Class 12 and entrance-exam chemistry later feel so hard. This guide sets out the CBSE Class 11 chemistry syllabus for 2026-27 with its marks, explains where students struggle in each unit, and gives a plan a Class 11 chemistry tutor can follow from April to the annual exam.
Look at the Class 12 syllabus and almost every unit leans on something from Class 11. Solutions and electrochemistry are mole calculations. Chemical kinetics uses the logarithms and graph work first practised in equilibrium. Coordination compounds need hybridisation and electronic configuration. Every Class 12 organic chapter assumes the student already understands inductive effect, resonance, carbocations and nomenclature from the Class 11 unit on basic principles.
Entrance exams make the point even more strongly: NEET and JEE both examine Class 11 and Class 12 chemistry, and Class 11 topics such as the mole concept, atomic structure, chemical bonding, thermodynamics and equilibrium are among the most tested ideas in physical chemistry.
The difficulty is that Class 11 is a school-examined year. Schools set their own tests, the pace can be uneven, and a student who scrapes through the annual exam can carry serious gaps straight into Class 12. A Class 11 chemistry tutor's main job is to make sure that does not happen.
The CBSE curriculum for 2026-27 sets a 70-mark, three-hour theory paper across nine units, following the two NCERT Class 11 chemistry textbooks (Part I and Part II). A further 30 marks come from practical work.
| Unit | Branch | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry | Physical | 7 |
| 2. Structure of Atom | Physical | 9 |
| 3. Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties | Inorganic | 6 |
| 4. Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure | Physical and inorganic | 7 |
| 5. Chemical Thermodynamics | Physical | 9 |
| 6. Equilibrium | Physical | 7 |
| 7. Redox Reactions | Physical | 4 |
| 8. Organic Chemistry: Some Basic Principles and Techniques | Organic | 11 |
| 9. Hydrocarbons | Organic | 10 |
| Theory total | 70 | |
| Practical examination | 30 |
Two things stand out. Physical chemistry, across units 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 and much of unit 4, makes up well over half of the theory marks, so numerical fluency matters more in Class 11 than in any other school year. And the two organic units together are worth 21 marks, the largest single block, even though they come last in the textbook and are often rushed in the final term.
The 2026-27 curriculum lists two topics that remain part of the syllabus but are assessed only formatively, that is, through classroom work rather than the year-end theory paper:
A student aiming only at the school exam might be tempted to skip these. That is a mistake for anyone heading towards NEET or JEE, where p-block chemistry is part of the syllabus, and the gas equation turns up constantly in physical chemistry numericals. A good tutor covers them lightly but properly, alongside the related units on periodicity and the mole concept.
These five units carry most of the Class 11 marks and nearly all of the calculation. Each has its own trap.
Significant figures, the laws of chemical combination, atomic and molecular mass, the mole, percentage composition, empirical formulae and stoichiometry, including limiting reagents and molarity. It looks easy, and that is the problem. A tutor should give this unit far more practice than its seven marks suggest, because every later numerical depends on it.
From Thomson and Rutherford through Bohr's model of hydrogen to the quantum mechanical model: quantum numbers, orbital shapes, the Aufbau principle, Pauli and Hund's rules, and electronic configurations. Students lose marks on Bohr-model calculations with exponents and on the exceptional configurations of chromium and copper.
System and surroundings, internal energy and enthalpy, calorimetry, Hess's law, enthalpies of different reactions, and spontaneity through Gibbs energy. The hardest part is sign conventions: whether work done is positive or negative, and what a negative ΔG actually tells you. A tutor should drill these until they are automatic.
The equilibrium constant and reaction quotient, Le Chatelier's principle, then ionic equilibrium: acids and bases, pH, buffers and solubility product. This is the longest chapter in the book, and the ionic half is where logarithms appear in earnest. Students who are weak with logs need a short maths detour first.
Oxidation numbers, identifying oxidising and reducing agents, and balancing redox equations. Few marks in Class 11, but the oxidation-number method is used again in Class 12 electrochemistry and in the practical titrations, so it is worth mastering.
The common thread is careful setting out: write the formula, substitute with units, calculate, then state the answer with the right significant figures. Students who build that habit in Class 11 are the ones who find Class 12 electrochemistry straightforward.
Unit 3, Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, is the gateway to all inorganic chemistry. It covers the modern periodic law, naming elements with atomic number above 100, the s-, p-, d- and f-blocks, and trends in atomic radius, ionisation enthalpy, electron gain enthalpy and electronegativity. The trends are simple; the exceptions, such as why nitrogen's ionisation enthalpy is higher than oxygen's, are where questions come from. A tutor who explains each exception from electronic configuration saves the student from memorising a list.
Unit 4, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, is the unit that most often separates confident Class 11 students from struggling ones. It covers Lewis structures and formal charge, bond parameters, VSEPR theory and molecular shapes, valence bond theory and hybridisation, molecular orbital theory for homonuclear diatomic molecules, and hydrogen bonding. The skills a tutor should practise until they are quick:
Unit 8, Organic Chemistry: Some Basic Principles and Techniques, is worth 11 marks, more than any other Class 11 unit. It covers the tetravalence and shapes of carbon compounds, structural representations, classification, IUPAC nomenclature, isomerism, the fundamental concepts of reaction mechanisms, purification methods, and qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic compounds.
The mechanism section is the one to spend time on. Inductive effect, resonance, hyperconjugation and the stability of carbocations, carbanions and free radicals explain almost every organic reaction in Class 12. A tutor should keep returning to these ideas, asking the student to predict which of two intermediates is more stable and why.
Unit 9, Hydrocarbons, worth 10 marks, applies those ideas to alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and aromatic hydrocarbons, including conformations of ethane, Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov addition, and electrophilic substitution in benzene, with a note on carcinogenicity and toxicity. This is the first chapter where students must remember many reactions, and it is the right moment to start a reaction notebook: one page per reaction type, with reagent, conditions, product and mechanism.
Nomenclature deserves a special mention. Students who cannot name compounds quickly and correctly lose marks in every organic question for the next two years. Ten minutes of naming practice in every session during these units pays back many times over.
CBSE's question-paper design for 2026-27 applies to both Class 11 and Class 12. It sets the balance by the kind of thinking asked for:
| Type of question | Marks | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Remembering and understanding | 28 | 40% |
| Applying | 21 | 30% |
| Analysing, evaluating and creating | 21 | 30% |
There is no overall choice in the paper, and about a third of the questions have an internal choice. For a student this means every unit must be prepared and 60% of the marks come from applying ideas, not reproducing the textbook.
The 30 practical marks are split in the curriculum as follows:
| Practical component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Volumetric analysis | 8 |
| Salt analysis | 8 |
| Content-based experiment | 6 |
| Project work | 4 |
| Class record and viva | 4 |
The Class 11 practical syllabus includes titrations of sodium hydroxide against standard oxalic acid and of hydrochloric acid against standard sodium carbonate, identification of one cation and one anion in a salt, detection of nitrogen, sulphur and chlorine in organic compounds, pH experiments and equilibrium-shift experiments. A tutor cannot run the lab at home, but can make sure the student understands the logic of the salt analysis scheme and can do titration calculations confidently, which is where most practical marks are lost.
For students with an entrance exam in view, Class 11 is not a practice year. NEET chemistry, for example, is 45 compulsory multiple-choice questions for 180 marks, with a mark deducted for each wrong answer, drawn from both Class 11 and Class 12. Many of those questions come from Class 11 physical chemistry and bonding.

School timetables differ, but this is a realistic sequence for a student who starts with a tutor at the beginning of the year:
Starting late is common, often after a poor first unit test or half-yearly. In that case the tutor should begin with the mole concept and bonding whatever the school is teaching, because they unlock the rest.

For a broader view of what to look for, see our main guide to a chemistry home tutor.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. The fee depends on the tutor's experience, whether entrance preparation is part of the brief, home or online sessions, travel in your area and how many sessions a week you book. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo, and our pricing guide explains the factors.
Two sessions a week suits most Class 11 students. Students also preparing for NEET or JEE, or catching up after a weak half-yearly, may need a third during the physical chemistry units. Home, online or a hybrid of the two all work; online needs a tablet or a camera on the notebook so the tutor can see every step.
Tell us the board, your area, preferred slots and budget, and whether an entrance exam is planned. We shortlist two or three chemistry tutors, you choose one for a free demo class, and switching later is free if the fit is wrong. Class 11 chemistry feels harder than Class 10 science because, in one year, it becomes a full subject with two NCERT textbooks. Students meet the full mole concept, quantum numbers, hybridisation, Gibbs energy, pH and buffers, and the first organic mechanisms. Physical chemistry makes up well over half of the CBSE theory marks.
In CBSE Class 11 chemistry for 2026-27, Organic Chemistry: Some Basic Principles and Techniques carries the most marks at 11, then Hydrocarbons at 10. Structure of Atom and Chemical Thermodynamics carry 9 each. The theory paper is 70 marks, with 30 more for practicals, so the two organic units together are the largest block.
No, a Class 11 chemistry student should not skip s- and p-block elements or the gaseous state, even though CBSE assesses them only in school in 2026-27. The p-block is part of the NEET and JEE syllabus, and the gas equation turns up constantly in physical chemistry numericals. A good tutor covers them lightly but properly.
CBSE Class 11 chemistry splits its 30 practical marks as volumetric analysis 8, salt analysis 8, experiment 6, project 4, and record and viva 4. A tutor cannot run the lab at home but can teach the salt-analysis logic and titration calculations, where most practical marks are lost.
Yes, NEET or JEE chemistry preparation should begin in Class 11, because both exams test Class 11 and 12 chemistry. Mole concept, bonding, thermodynamics and equilibrium are central. A tutor goes deeper than the school test, adds timed objective questions, and follows any coaching sequence rather than teaching everything twice.
A Class 11 chemistry tutor should start in April with Some Basic Concepts and heavy numerical practice, then Structure of Atom over summer and bonding from July. Thermodynamics comes by September, equilibrium and redox in October and November, organic basics in December and hydrocarbons in January, then full papers before the annual exam.
Online tuition works well for Class 11 chemistry if the tutor can see the working through a writing tablet or a notebook camera. Numericals make up most of the paper. Home sessions suit students who need close supervision. Online widens the choice of experienced tutors, and some families mix one of each a week.
Yes, you can ask for a woman tutor for Class 11 chemistry, and we shortlist women tutors where available. Tell us when you share your requirement. Being flexible on timing, or open to online sessions from anywhere in India, increases the number of good options.
Tell us the class, board and your area. We share two or three matched tutors, and the first class is a free demo.
