NEET (UG) 2026

Chemistry was a quarter of the paper: 45 questions, 180 of the 720 marks, answered on paper. It pays for exact NCERT recall at speed.

JEE Main 2026 Paper 1

Chemistry had 25 of the 75 questions, five of them needing a typed number rather than a choice. It pays for mechanisms and multi-step physical chemistry.

How many marks does each CBSE Class 12 chemistry chapter carry?

For 2026-27 CBSE gives every one of the ten chapters a fixed mark. Here they are in syllabus order, with the place a home tutor most often finds marks slipping:

Added up by branch, organic chemistry holds 33 of the 70 marks, physical 23 and inorganic 14. With organic close to half the paper, a plan that leaves it for the second term is a risk.

How is the CBSE chemistry board paper designed?

The 33 questions sit in Sections A to E, with internal choice in a few of them. Neither a calculator nor a log table is allowed in the hall. Around 40% of the marks test remembering and understanding; around 60% test applying, analysing and evaluating, which is exactly where short "give reasons" answers are won or lost. Which topics are off the board paper, and should an entrance student still learn them?

Two topics have been removed from CBSE Class 12 altogether for 2026-27: the solid state, and Groups 15 to 18 of the p-block. Four more are still taught but assessed only in school, never in the board paper: surface chemistry, polymers, chemistry in everyday life, and the extraction of elements from their ores.

The catch for a NEET or JEE student is that NTA sets its own syllabus. Material CBSE has dropped, parts of the p-block for instance, can still appear in an entrance paper. Plan board revision from the CBSE list, and check NTA's list before striking anything out of the entrance plan.

What should a Punjab board chemistry student expect from a tutor?

The Punjab School Education Board prescribes its own curriculum and textbooks and conducts the Senior Secondary examination. We do not set out its chemistry paper here; the syllabus and the structure of the question paper on pseb.ac.in are the reference. In practice, ask for a tutor who teaches from the PSEB book, uses the board's question bank after each chapter, and explains in the language your child answers in, whether Punjabi, Hindi or English. How much of the 30-mark practical can be prepared without a lab?

The CBSE practical splits its 30 marks into five parts, and each has a piece a home tutor can work on:

1. Titration, 8 marks. This session it uses potassium permanganate against oxalic acid or Mohr's salt (ferrous ammonium sulphate), and every student weighs and makes up the standard solution personally. At home: the molarity calculation from the weighed mass, and a clean table of burette readings.
2. Salt analysis, 8 marks. At home: the order of preliminary and confirmatory tests, written until it is automatic.
3. A content-based experiment, 6 marks. At home: the theory behind it, so the observations make sense.
4. The project, 4 marks. At home: a topic small enough for the student to explain and defend.
5. Record and viva, 4 marks together. At home: a complete record, and practice answers to standard questions, such as why permanganate needs no separate indicator.

What can one home chemistry session look like?

A useful session follows the school or coaching chapter rather than racing ahead, and touches all three branches so none goes cold. One shape that works for many students:

• Opening, physical. Two numericals from this week's sheet, solved line by line while the tutor watches the units and powers of ten.
• Middle, organic. One conversion chain, say from an alcohol to an acid to an amine, drawn from memory and then checked against NCERT.
• Close, inorganic. Quick questions on a trend or a complex, with the reason said aloud each time.
• Before the tutor leaves. Two "give reasons" answers written and marked on the spot.

Over a term the organic chains join into a single map, and conversion questions stop feeling like separate facts.

ISC, IB or IGCSE chemistry?

• ISC. Practical and project marks sit beside the theory paper, and CISCE examiners look for an explanation, not a one-line phrase from the textbook.
• IB Diploma. SL or HL, with the course organised around two themes, structure and reactivity. The scientific investigation is the student's own; a tutor may question, never write.

Why does Class 11 chemistry decide so much of Class 12?

The mole concept, equilibrium and the first organic chapters do not end with Class 11. Class 12 leans on them in solutions, in electrochemistry and in each organic conversion, whether the paper is a board exam or NEET or JEE.
