What the 2026 documents described

The National Testing Agency has run JEE (Main) since 2019; before that the CBSE conducted it. In the 2026 information bulletin, Paper 1 for B.E. and B.Tech. was a computer-based test with mathematics, physics and chemistry. Each subject had two sections: twenty multiple-choice questions in Section A and five questions in Section B whose answer is a number, typed in as an integer on an on-screen keypad. That came to 75 questions and 300 marks. A right answer earned four marks and a wrong one lost one, in both sections, so a careless guess in Section B costs as much as one in Section A. There were two sessions, and the better total NTA score was used for the merit list. The bulletin set no age limit.

JEE (Advanced), run by the IITs, followed for those who qualified through Main. Its 2026 brochure described two papers, both compulsory, offered in English and Hindi, and allowed a candidate at most two attempts in two consecutive years. Why the Class 12 board result still matters

Families sometimes treat the board paper as a formality once entrance work starts. The official rules say otherwise. NTA's engineering page states that for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes admitted through JEE (Main), a candidate needs at least 75% in the Class 12 examination or a place within the highest 20 percentile of their own board (65% for SC and ST candidates). The JEE (Advanced) 2026 brochure sets a similar test for the IITs, with physics, chemistry and mathematics as compulsory subjects. For a Jalandhar student that board is PSEB, CBSE or CISCE, and the percentile is worked out within it.

Give the tutor one clear job

A tutor asked to "help with JEE" in all three subjects often ends up re-teaching chapters the school already covered. It works better to name the job at the start. Four that suit a home tutor well:

• The stuck-problem list. Your child writes down every problem that defeated them in the week, with the attempt left on the page. The tutor starts each session there and asks to see the working before giving any hint.
• The weekly paper and its post-mortem. A timed set at home, then a review in which every lost mark is labelled: concept gap, slip in algebra, misread question, or a guess that should have been left.
• One subject, held firm. Most students are steady in two subjects and shaky in the third. Regular sessions in that one subject usually pay more than thin help across all three.
• The board side. Practical files, school tests and long written answers keep going all year. A tutor can keep them on schedule so they do not pile up before the pre-boards.

Starting from PSEB, CBSE or ISC

The school course shapes what the tutor has to add. A few points from the boards' own documents:

• PSEB. The board's 2026-27 structure for Class 12 mathematics is an 80-mark paper with 20 internal marks, 18 questions in four sections, and no calculators. Physics is a 70-mark theory paper of 19 questions, about a fifth of the marks on numericals, with a non-programmable calculator and log tables allowed. That difference matters: JEE allows no calculator, so a PSEB student who leans on one in physics should practise without it for entrance sets. • CBSE. Because the school books are NCERT's, chapter content and the entrance syllabus mostly agree. The weak spot tends to be presentation, since a board script wants working, units and labelled figures once a student is used to bubbling answers. See CBSE home tutors in Jalandhar.

Punjabi, Hindi or English on the paper

The 2026 bulletin offered JEE (Main) in thirteen languages. English with Punjabi was available to candidates on the basis of a present and permanent address in Punjab, Chandigarh or Delhi and its neighbouring cities, and English with Hindi at every centre in India. The paper comes in English as well as the chosen language, and the English version prevails if the two differ. The choice is made on the application form and cannot be changed later.

So decide early, and pick a tutor who teaches the technical terms in that language. A student who reads physics in Punjabi at school but plans to sit the paper in English needs a gradual switch through Class 11, not a rush in the last term. JEE (Advanced) in 2026 was offered in English and Hindi only, which is worth knowing before the choice for Main is made.

A week that survives the whole year

A tutor slot only works if it lasts through test weeks, winter evenings and the board practicals. Write out the school timetable, any class timetable and family commitments side by side, and look for the gap that never moves.

In winter, early-evening slots are easier to keep than late ones for a tutor who rides a two-wheeler across the city. What to watch in the JEE demo

1. Questions first: school board, timetable and the latest test score, before any teaching starts.
2. Hand over two half-done problems. A good tutor locates the broken step and lets your child finish.
3. A plain explanation of when to skip a doubtful question, given minus one for errors in both sections.
4. Teaching in the paper language your child will pick on the form.
5. Some mention of practical files and the board script, not only entrance sets.
6. A fixed weekly slot the tutor can reach from home.
