What home tuition costs in Amritsar

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Example only, not a quote: one subject, one-hour classes, 4 weeks a month. Your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.
Classes a week Classes a month At ₹800 an hour At ₹2,500 an hour
2 8 ₹6,400 a month ₹20,000 a month
3 12 ₹9,600 a month ₹30,000 a month

Why one-to-one home tuition costs more than group coaching

In a coaching batch, one teacher's hour is shared by many students, so each family pays for a part of it. At home the whole hour is your child's: the pace, the questions and the homework check follow one student, and the tutor's travel to your home is part of the working day. A small group of two or three children from the same society usually costs less per child, with less individual attention.

Home tuition in Amritsar: a parent's guide from Lawrence Road to Verka and Sultanwind

Ask an Amritsar family how a tutor should find them and the answer usually begins with a road. Lawrence Road and the colonies around it make up the busy centre. Ranjit Avenue and Basant Avenue form the planned blocks to the north. Majitha Road and Batala Road carry long lines of newer colonies out of the centre, Batala Road as far as Verka. The GT Road runs west past Putlighar to Chheharta and, the other way, past the New Amritsar gate, while Tarn Taran Road and Sultanwind fill the south-east. Students in all of these study for the Punjab School Education Board, CBSE or CISCE, and a few for IB or IGCSE. The tutor who stays all year is normally the one who already rides your road, teaches your board and can hold the same afternoon slot each week.

How are Amritsar families matched with a tutor?

You send one request. In it, name the class and board, the subjects causing trouble, your colony with the main road it opens onto, the hours left free after school, and whether you prefer lessons at home, online or a blend. We answer with two or three tutors, and each one's fee is on the profile for you to read before anybody visits. Your first lesson with the tutor you choose is a free demo. In Amritsar, four details shape who appears on that short list:

  • The road you live off. Majitha Road, Batala Road, Ajnala Road, Tarn Taran Road and the GT Road each run a long way, so "Majitha Road" alone is not an address. Give the colony and a landmark on the main road, and we look first for tutors already travelling that road.
  • The board and the medium. PSEB, CBSE, ICSE and ISC, IB and IGCSE use different books and reward different kinds of answer. Tell us too whether your child reads most easily in Punjabi, Hindi or English.
  • The free hours. Afternoons before the evening market traffic are the easiest to keep in most of the city. If your child is busy then, say so and we look for a tutor who can come early or on weekends.
  • The front door. Many homes here are independent houses or builder floors with a street-level entrance. Flats, including those allotted by the Improvement Trust, may need a block, floor and gate instruction.

Use the demo as a normal lesson on this week's homework. If it does not click, the next tutor on the list can come instead, and moving to a different tutor at any later point costs nothing.

Amritsar in five zones

The tutors you see for Amritsar are drawn from our tutor profiles, and 19 Amritsar localities have a page of their own. Each page lists tutors who live in that locality first, then tutors from the same zone, then others across the city, then online tutors from anywhere in India. For planning home visits we sort the city into five groups: Central Amritsar, North Amritsar, Majitha Road and Batala Road, West Amritsar and South-East Amritsar. We placed localities using the Municipal Corporation's zoning list, but the five groups are our own planning tool, not the corporation's zones.

ZoneLocalities with a pageWhat to plan for
Central Amritsar Lawrence Road, Green Avenue, Dayanand Nagar, Rani Ka Bagh Market-hour parking and the court-side roads by day
North Amritsar Ranjit Avenue, Basant Avenue, Kashmir Avenue, Loharka Road Block letters and house numbers; busier evening roads to the centre
Majitha Road and Batala Road Majitha Road, Green Field, Mohkampura, Verka Long roads with many colonies; give the phase or lane
West Amritsar Putlighar, Chheharta, Guru Amar Dass Avenue GT Road and Ajnala Road traffic
South-East Amritsar New Amritsar, East Mohan Nagar, Tarn Taran Road, Sultanwind The GT Road entrance and narrow lanes in older cores

Central Amritsar: the market roads and the colonies behind them

Lawrence Road is one of the city's main shopping streets, and the same name covers the homes in the pockets on both sides of it: independent houses, flats and plots behind a frontage of shops and offices. Green Avenue is a plotted residential colony just off those market roads rather than a cluster of large apartment blocks. Dayanand Nagar is houses and builder floors on streets that stay calmer than the roads around them. Rani Ka Bagh is an older neighbourhood beside the district court complex, so its roads are busier in office hours than those of the purely residential colonies. The corporation's list groups these localities with Model Town, White Avenue, Albert Road, Mall Road and the railway station area.

Amritsar Junction, on GT Road and Putlighar Road, is the main railway station and has ten platforms, which makes the centre the easiest zone to reach for a tutor coming in by train. For everyone else, parking decides the timing. Hall Bazaar, Lawrence Road and GT Road are among the major markets where parking is scarce during the day, so a tutor on a two-wheeler fits better than one in a car, and an afternoon slot before the evening shoppers arrive is the steadiest. Around Rani Ka Bagh, late afternoon avoids the weekday court traffic. In a lane house, the door number and a nearby landmark are enough; for a flat, send the block and floor.

North Amritsar: the planned avenues and the road beyond them

Ranjit Avenue was laid out by the Amritsar Improvement Trust in lettered blocks, and the Trust has offered both plots and flats there, including MIG flats in the Ranjit Avenue block. Houses, builder floors and apartments sit beside block markets, and the Municipal Corporation's own office is here. Basant Avenue adjoins Ranjit Avenue and follows a similar layout of houses, builder floors and plots. Kashmir Avenue is a residential colony of houses, flats and plots whose inner roads are quieter than the main roads around it; the corporation's list places it in one zone with Basant Avenue and Medical Enclave. Loharka Road leads out of the city from the Ranjit Avenue and Basant Avenue side, with plotted colonies such as Ranjit Vihar growing along it.

Directions here run on letters and numbers. Tell a new tutor the block, the house number and the nearest block market, and for an apartment building say whether visitors sign in at the gate. Office visitors and shoppers keep the main internal roads of Ranjit Avenue busy during the day, and the roads linking the north with the centre fill up in the evening, so late afternoon is the usual sweet spot. Along Loharka Road, where some colonies are newer, a pinned location saves a first-time visitor from guessing the lane.

Majitha Road and Batala Road: two long roads out of the centre

Majitha Road runs from the bridge in central Amritsar to the Majitha bypass, and much of the city's newer housing has grown along it: plots, independent houses and newer apartment buildings, with colonies such as Rishi Vihar, Diamond Colony and Nagina Avenue named in the corporation's list. Green Field is a set of plotted colonies off Majitha Road that the corporation lists as Phase-I, Phase-II and New Green Field. On the Batala Road side, Mohkampura is a neighbourhood of closely set lanes, grouped in the list with Jawahar Nagar, Tirath Nagar, Bharat Nagar and Preet Nagar. Further out, Verka is a suburban town on the northern edge of the city along Batala Road, where homes sit beside the milk plant that took the town's name in 1973.

The 88 Feet Road links Majitha Road and Batala Road, which lets a tutor living on one road reach the other without going back through the centre. Batala Road is the main route between Verka Bypass Chowk and the city centre and is busy at peak hours, so a mid-afternoon or fixed early-evening slot suits most families. Verka Junction station sits on the Amritsar-Pathankot line and the Amritsar-Jammu main line. In Green Field, always say which phase you are in, and in Mohkampura give the lane plus a landmark on Batala Road; a bike or scooter copes with the inner lanes better than a car.

West Amritsar: the GT Road, Chheharta and Ajnala Road

Putlighar is a busy mixed area on the GT Road, centred on Putlighar Chowk, with homes behind and above shops. Following the GT Road west brings you to Chheharta, a suburban town that has grown into an industrial and commercial township, with colonies on both sides of the road such as Bhalla Colony, Narain Garh, Kartar Nagar and Krishna Nagar, and its own railway station. Out on Ajnala Road in the north-west, Guru Amar Dass Avenue is a residential colony of independent houses, listed by the corporation with the Loharka Road and Fatehgarh Churian Road colonies.

Amritsar lies on the Grand Trunk Road, now numbered National Highway 3, and most tutors in this zone use it. Ajnala Road is the route to the airport at Raja Sansi and carries airport and office traffic, which makes a set afternoon hour easier than a late one. In the lanes behind GT Road, tell the tutor which entrance and which floor to use.

South-East Amritsar: New Amritsar, Tarn Taran Road and Sultanwind

New Amritsar is a planned residential area on the main GT Road, developed by the Improvement Trust through its New Amritsar Scheme, with HIG and MIG flats, a multistorey parking facility and a later expansion scheme for housing. East Mohan Nagar is houses and builder floors, placed by the corporation in the same zone as Ajit Nagar and New Amritsar. Tarn Taran Road leads out towards the town of Tarn Taran, lined inside city limits by colonies such as Ishwar Nagar, Antaryami Colony and Sharma Colony, and by shops along much of its length. Sultanwind grew around an old village of the same name, with an older core and newer colonies around it.

The local name for the colony's entrance off the GT Road is the New Amritsar gate, and it is the landmark to give a new tutor, along with the easiest way in from the service lane. Inside, houses open at the doorstep and flats need the block and floor. On Tarn Taran Road the colonies stretch a long way, so the colony name and lane matter more than the road. In Sultanwind's older core the lanes are narrow, so a two-wheeler is far simpler than a car. Evening traffic on the GT Road and the roads into the centre makes afternoon lessons the dependable choice.

Which boards do Amritsar tutors teach?

Amritsar students are mostly on the Punjab School Education Board or CBSE, with others on CISCE's ICSE and ISC and a small group on IB or Cambridge IGCSE. Strength in one board does not carry over automatically, so we match the board and the class together rather than the subject on its own.

Punjab School Education Board (PSEB)

PSEB was set up by a legislative enactment in November 1969 to develop and promote school education in Punjab, and an amendment to its Act in 1987 gave it autonomy. It holds public examinations at the Middle, Matriculation and Senior Secondary levels, and it prescribes the curriculum, courses of study and textbooks, with an academic wing of subject experts preparing and revising syllabuses and books. Its office is at Vidya Bhawan, Phase-8, SAS Nagar (Mohali). The board's website publishes syllabi, a question bank, the structure of question papers and model test papers, which is exactly what a PSEB tutor should teach from. Take formats and dates only from pseb.ac.in, and see our page on Punjab board tutors in Amritsar.

CBSE

CBSE sets its papers from the NCERT textbooks and includes questions that ask students to apply a concept in an unfamiliar context. For a teenager also aiming at an engineering or medical entrance, this is an advantage, because careful NCERT study feeds both. The usual gap is in the long written answer, where steps and units are dropped after a diet of multiple-choice practice. See CBSE tutors in Amritsar.

ICSE and ISC

CISCE's ICSE in Class 10 and ISC in Class 12 ask for full written answers across a broad syllabus, and English includes set literature. A good tutor spreads revision over several passes, sets timed answers and keeps project and practical files from slipping. Our ICSE and ISC tutor page for Amritsar has more.

IB and IGCSE

Families on the IB Diploma or Cambridge IGCSE often end up with an online specialist, because the right tutor may live in another city. IB marks coursework as well as exams; a tutor may discuss an Internal Assessment or Extended Essay but must never write it. IGCSE practice is built on past papers marked against Cambridge's own schemes.

What should tuition cover at each stage?

Classes 1 to 8

Younger children need steady reading, sure arithmetic and the habit of finishing written work neatly. Many Amritsar homes speak Punjabi while the school books are in English or Hindi, so a tutor who has the child read aloud for a short while in each lesson, and explains new words in the home language, often helps more than extra worksheets. Make sure middle-school Maths is solid before any early entrance foundation work.

Classes 9 and 10

Class 9 is where Maths and Science harden, and Class 10 brings the first board paper, whether that is PSEB Matriculation, CBSE or ICSE. A tutor's job is to keep the school syllabus on time so the board year is not rushed. For CBSE students, our Class 10 Maths study plan and Science notes for Class 10 follow the NCERT chapters.

Classes 11 and 12

Senior Secondary is a bigger leap than most families expect: new topics arrive quickly and much of the entrance syllabus sits in Class 11. A student who loses Class 11 Physics or Maths seldom wins it back in Class 12, so pick a specialist for each hard subject. Our Physics strategies for Class 12 help with the board year.

Which subjects do Amritsar families ask about?

From Class 9 upwards, requests centre on Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Tutors on NXTutors also teach English, Punjabi, Hindi, Social Science, Computer Science, Accountancy, Economics and Business Studies, and many take every subject for primary children. Amritsar has its own pages for home tutors for Maths, Science tutors up to Class 10, Physics home tutors, Chemistry home tutors, Biology tutors and English tutors.

In Maths, the useful tutor goes back to the point where the student first got lost, even if that is two years earlier, and rebuilds from there. In Physics, every formula should come with the reason behind it. Chemistry asks for three separate habits: practised numericals in Physical, reaction logic in Organic and careful reading in Inorganic, which our Class 12 Organic and Inorganic Chemistry guide explains. A student switching from a Punjabi- or Hindi-medium school to English-medium books learns most easily with a tutor who gives technical terms in both languages for a while and then lets the English stand alone; our spoken English tips for students add practice between lessons.

Can a home tutor help with JEE or NEET in Amritsar?

Yes, as long as the tutor has a clear job next to school and any coaching the student already attends. Four roles tend to work for Amritsar students:

  • Doubt clearing on a fixed day. The week's practice sheets and the latest test come to the lesson, and nothing half-understood is carried forward.
  • Board and entrance in one plan. Class 11 and 12 NCERT underpins both, so a single revision plan can serve the two.
  • The weakest subject first. Extra time on the subject losing the most marks usually pays more than spreading the same hours across three.
  • A protected slot. An early morning, a late evening or a weekend block, chosen once and kept through the year.

NTA runs JEE Main in two sessions in the first half of the year, and those who qualify can sit JEE Advanced. NEET UG is held once a year with Biology carrying half the marks, so NCERT Biology deserves close, line-by-line reading. Take dates only from that year's official bulletin. Give the tutor our topic plans for JEE Maths, JEE Physics and JEE Chemistry, and our NCERT-first plan for NEET Biology. Our piece on choosing between coaching and a home tutor for JEE was written for Gurugram, but the same questions apply in Amritsar. Local pages: JEE tutors in Amritsar and NEET tutors in Amritsar.

Home or online tuition in Amritsar?

A tutor in the room suits young children, students who lose focus on a screen and subjects where you need to see the working, such as Maths and Physics numericals. Online lessons widen the choice to specialists anywhere in India, which matters most for IB, IGCSE, ISC electives and harder entrance problems. Some Amritsar situations point one way or the other:

SituationWhat usually works
You live off a long road such as Majitha Road, Batala Road or Tarn Taran Road A home tutor from the same road; online for the subject no one nearby teaches
Your home is near the central markets or the court-side roads Home lessons in the afternoon, before evening parking gets hard
Short, cold winter evenings or very hot summer afternoons Agree in advance which lessons move online so the week is not lost
IB, IGCSE or an uncommon ISC elective An online specialist, with a local tutor for the other subjects if needed

Plenty of families end up with two or three home lessons a week and a short online check-in before tests, taught by the same person. Our comparison of home and online tutors sets out the trade-offs, and our page on online tutors for Amritsar students covers the online route.

What does a home tutor cost in Amritsar?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor chooses their own fee and you see it before the demo, so the more useful thing is to know what to ask:

  • How long is each lesson? An hour and a longer session are very different, so compare like with like.
  • How many lessons a week does the tutor suggest, and why? The answer tells you how they read your child's needs.
  • What happens to a missed lesson? Agree whether it is made up, moved online or simply skipped.
  • Is homework checked between visits? Some tutors review work by message; others only in the lesson.

Quotes differ mainly by class, by goal (school support or entrance preparation) and by how far the tutor travels. Put the money where the difficulty is: one capable tutor in the hardest subject often does more than lighter help in several. The pricing guide explains how fees vary by class and subject, and our article on home tuition fees in Amritsar covers the local picture.

What should you watch for at the demo class?

A profile gets a tutor onto your list; the demo decides whether they stay. In that first hour, check:

  1. Questions before teaching. Did the tutor ask about the school day, other classes and the next test?
  2. A starting point. Did they find out what your child already knows instead of opening the chapter at page one?
  3. Language. Was the explanation easy to follow, in Punjabi, Hindi, English or a mix?
  4. Board awareness. Could they describe how your board sets this year's paper without guessing?
  5. Student effort. Did your child work through problems, or mostly watch?
  6. A slot that will last. Can the tutor reach you at that hour every week from where they live?

For a flat, give the guard or caretaker the tutor's name beforehand; for a house, share the number, the colony or block and a location pin. Hold lessons in a shared room with an adult at home. Our parents' checklist for the demo class and our article on choosing a board and stream go further.

When in the year should tuition start?

CBSE's academic session begins in April, and an Amritsar board or entrance year usually runs in five phases:

  • April to June: new books and then the summer holidays, the natural window to close gaps from earlier classes; mornings and evenings are kinder than the hottest afternoons.
  • July to September: regular weekly lessons, with online sessions agreed as the fallback on days of heavy rain.
  • October to November: half-yearly tests and the festival season; plan lighter weeks and make up hours around them.
  • December to February: short, cold days that suit earlier slots; finish the syllabus, sit full papers and pre-boards, and follow your board's own notices for exam dates.
  • March to May: board papers end, the second JEE Main session and JEE Advanced follow, and NEET UG arrives.

PSEB students should take their exam schedule only from the board's website. Starting in April gives the full year; a later start still helps, with more emphasis on past papers and writing technique.

How do you get started in Amritsar?

Send the class, board and subjects, your colony with the main road and a landmark, and the hours your child is free. We suggest two or three tutors; one teaches a free demo and you decide after it. Pick your locality from the list on this page, browse all tutors or book a free demo class. If no home tutor is close enough yet, an online tutor from elsewhere in India can start straight away.

Our Amritsar home tuition guide goes through all five zones locality by locality, from Lawrence Road and Ranjit Avenue to Verka, Chheharta and Sultanwind.
