Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

"Weak in English" on a report card can mean very different things. One child reads slowly and runs out of time on the unseen passage. Another understands every chapter but writes literature answers that stop after three lines. A third writes well and goes quiet the moment a teacher asks a question aloud. In many Amritsar homes, where Punjabi or Hindi is the everyday language and English belongs to the exam hall, these gaps are common and fixable. Tell NXTutors which one sounds like your child, which board sets the paper, and where you live; we send two or three English tutors with their fees, and the one you choose gives a free demo.
| What you notice | Likely gap | What the tutor does |
|---|---|---|
| Unseen passages left unfinished; answers that wander from the text | Reading | A timed passage every week, answers checked against the lines they came from |
| Marks lost on letters, notices and paragraphs despite good ideas | Writing formats | Formats learned once, then content, linking words and length practised |
| Grammar worksheets right, own sentences full of errors | Grammar in use | Errors corrected from the child's own writing, one pattern at a time |
| Silence when asked to answer aloud | Speaking | A spoken summary at the end of each lesson, growing into short talks |
Put the gap in your request. It changes the shortlist more than the class does.
| Block | Marks | Weekly practice |
|---|---|---|
| Reading: a discursive passage and a case-based factual passage with a chart or data | 20 | One fresh passage of each kind, timed |
| Grammar | 10 | Errors drawn from the child's own writing |
| Writing: a formal letter (5) and an analytical paragraph on a chart, map or graph (5) | 10 | One piece a week, alternating the two |
| Literature from First Flight and Footprints without Feet | 40 | Two answers planned in points, kept to the word limit, with a reference to the text |
The school adds 20 internal marks, 5 of them for listening and speaking. Literature alone equals reading, grammar and writing together, so a child who can retell a chapter well in Punjabi or Hindi but writes thin English answers has a lot to gain from regular, marked literature practice.
The Punjab School Education Board prescribes its own English textbooks and examines at the Middle, Matriculation and Senior Secondary levels. We keep its paper general here, because the board publishes the current structure of its question papers on pseb.ac.in along with syllabi, a question bank and model test papers. A tutor for a PSEB child should teach from the board's book, practise from the question bank, write at least one model test paper under exam conditions before each board exam, and explain in Punjabi or Hindi at first only where it helps, moving steadily into English. Other subjects on the board are covered on Punjab board tutors in Amritsar.
CISCE examines English as two subjects, English Language and Literature in English, each with an 80-mark paper and 20 internal marks. The language paper asks for a composition of about 300 to 350 words, a letter, a notice with an e-mail, an unseen passage with a summary, and grammar; listening and speaking carry 10 internal marks each. The literature paper covers the set play, prose and poetry. The real work for a tutor is timed, extended writing marked honestly. Our notes on ICSE Class 10 English go paper by paper.
Step by step. A student coming from Punjabi-medium or Hindi-medium classes gains more from a planned bridge than from being told to "speak only English" overnight:
Families who want spoken fluency as a goal of its own should say so at the start. Our spoken English guide for students has ideas to use at home.
At this age, fluent reading matters more than exam technique. Watch for guessing a word from its first letter, losing the line, or avoiding books. Short, frequent practice works: decode a few new words, read a page aloud with gentle correction, then retell the story in the child's own words. A tutor who chats in simple English around pictures and stories, using Punjabi or Hindi only to unlock a word, suits this stage, and a primary specialist is a better fit than a senior-class teacher.
CBSE English Core gives Class 11 reading 26 marks, grammar with creative writing 23, and literature 31 from Hornbill and Snapshots. Class 12 moves to reading 22, creative writing 18 and literature 40 from Flamingo and Vistas, with no separate grammar block. ISC students pick one of six topics for a composition of 400 to 450 words and also face directed writing and a proposal, with literature on its own paper. IGCSE families should confirm the First or Second Language entry, and IB students prepare for unseen analysis and an individual oral. Specialists for these courses are fewer, so online help is common. The national English home tutor guide covers each course in depth.
Tutors in Amritsar usually come by two-wheeler or auto-rickshaw, so a match from your side of the city tends to last through the year. Our Amritsar home tuition page lists every area.
On Lawrence Road, homes in the side lanes are reached at the doorstep, but parking is scarce in shopping hours, so say where a two-wheeler can stand. In Dayanand Nagar, builder floors need the floor and entrance shared in advance. Green Avenue is a plotted colony of houses where a house number and a landmark usually do the job.
Basant Avenue is mainly houses and builder floors; tutors from Ranjit Avenue and Green Avenue have a short ride in. Along Loharka Road, a pinned location helps a first-time visitor find the right lane. On Majitha Road, give the colony, lane and a main-road landmark, and leave the tutor's name with the guard in a newer apartment building.
The Central Amritsar, North Amritsar and Majitha Road and Batala Road zone pages add timing tips, and the Amritsar home tuition guide compares all five zones.
If any of these is missing, tell us; another tutor from the shortlist gives a demo, and a later change is free. From around Class 3, online lessons work when the tutor sees the written work first, and they bring in ISC, IGCSE or IB specialists from elsewhere. Early readers and children just switching into English usually do better with someone beside them, and many families mix one visit with one online lesson a week.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor prices their own lessons, with class, board, experience of that paper, the journey at your hour and the number of lessons a week all playing a part. You see the fees before any demo, and our guide to home tuition fees in Amritsar suggests what to ask.
Tell us the class and board, which of the four skills worries you, the language your child thinks in, your locality with a landmark, the times you can offer and a budget. Two or three English tutors come back with fees. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID (how we check tutors). An Amritsar English tutor should first fix whichever skill is costing marks: reading, writing formats, grammar in use, or speaking. Unfinished unseen passages point to reading, lost marks on letters to formats, errors in the child's own sentences to grammar, and silence when asked aloud to speaking. Name the gap, since it shapes the shortlist more than the class.
For Amritsar CBSE Class 10 students, the 80-mark English paper gives reading 20, grammar 10, writing 10 and literature 40. Reading uses a discursive and a case-based passage, and writing a formal letter and an analytical paragraph. Literature comes from First Flight and Footprints without Feet. The school adds 20 internal marks, including 5 for listening and speaking.
An Amritsar English tutor for a PSEB student should teach from the Punjab School Education Board's own textbook and practise from its question bank. Set at least one model test paper under exam conditions before each board exam. Explaining in Punjabi or Hindi helps at first, moving steadily into English. The current paper structure is on pseb.ac.in.
ICSE English in Amritsar needs more timed writing because CISCE sets English Language and Literature in English as two separate 80-mark papers, each with 20 internal marks. The language paper asks for a composition of about 300 to 350 words, a letter, a notice with an e-mail, and an unseen passage with a summary.
An Amritsar English tutor builds a planned bridge from Punjabi or Hindi rather than demanding English overnight. Steps include short two-way translations so word order stops copying the home language, a small daily reading habit with a word log, borrowed frames for letters and literature answers, and finally English-only lessons from an agreed date.
For a Class 1 to 5 child in Amritsar, a primary specialist who chats in simple English around pictures and stories suits better than a senior-class teacher. Fluent reading matters more than exam technique here: decode a few new words, read a page aloud with gentle correction, then retell the story in the child's own words.
For Amritsar CBSE English Core students, Class 11 gives reading 26 marks, grammar with creative writing 23 and literature 31 from Hornbill and Snapshots. Class 12 moves to reading 22, creative writing 18 and literature 40 from Flamingo and Vistas, with no separate grammar block, so literature practice matters more in the board year.
From around Class 3, online English lessons can work for an Amritsar child, provided the tutor sees the written work first. Online also brings in ISC, IGCSE or IB specialists from elsewhere. Early readers and children just switching into English usually do better with someone beside them, so many families mix one visit with one online lesson weekly.
An English tutor visiting Lawrence Road in Amritsar needs to know where a two-wheeler can stand, as parking is scarce in shopping hours. In Dayanand Nagar, share the floor and entrance in advance for a builder floor. Along Loharka Road, a pinned location helps a first-time visitor find the right lane.
