Tutoring in Amritsar: what to know

Amritsar is divided into five zones on NXTutors, and each asks something different of a tutor. Central Amritsar (Lawrence Road, Green Avenue, Dayanand Nagar, Rani Ka Bagh) is market streets and older neighbourhoods around the court complex. North Amritsar (Ranjit Avenue, Basant Avenue, Kashmir Avenue, Loharka Road) is lettered blocks and plotted colonies. Majitha Road and Batala Road follows two long roads north to Green Field, Mohkampura and Verka. West Amritsar runs along the GT Road through Putlighar to Chheharta, with Guru Amar Dass Avenue on Ajnala Road. South-East Amritsar covers New Amritsar, East Mohan Nagar, Tarn Taran Road and Sultanwind.

Most home tutoring here means a ride on a scooter or motorbike and a doorbell at a house or builder floor; apartment gates with a visitor register are the exception, found in parts of Ranjit Avenue, along Majitha Road and in New Amritsar's Trust flats. Plan your week around a handful of pressure points: market parking near Lawrence Road and Hall Bazaar, weekday court traffic beside Rani Ka Bagh, the railway crossing near Putlighar, and peak-hour traffic on Batala Road and the GT Road. Amritsar Junction, Verka Junction and Chheharta station make rail a real option for tutors who live along those lines.

Families ask about several boards. The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) holds public examinations at the Middle, Matriculation and Senior Secondary levels and prescribes the textbooks its schools use; CBSE is widespread, CISCE's ICSE and ISC are present, and a small number of students follow IB or IGCSE. Children may be more comfortable in Punjabi, Hindi or English, so say on your profile which you teach in. Online lessons widen your reach: a tutor living in Basant Avenue can teach a Chheharta student by video on school nights. Tutors based in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula should see /tuition-jobs/chandigarh.

How you get tuition work on NXTutors

Six steps from applying to your first class. Swipe to see each step.

  1. Sign up with a one-time code

Join from anywhere in Amritsar, Ranjit Avenue to Chheharta: enter the one-time code sent to your phone or email, then add your subjects, classes, boards such as PSEB or CBSE, and the language you teach in.

  2. Upload your ID; our team reviews it

Upload a government photo ID for our team to look at. Every tutor who joins goes through this ID check, and the badge appears on your profile only once that review is done; it is not a police check.

  3. Your profile carries the Verified badge

Set out the Amritsar localities you will travel to, perhaps Green Field and Kashmir Avenue, the fee you decide on and the hours you are free. Plans and what they include are listed on /pricing.

  4. A family nearby sends a request

A parent in Basant Avenue sends a request. NXTutors shortlists two or three tutors: those living in the area, then those who already go there, then North Amritsar, the wider city and online.

  5. Free demo; the family sees your fee first

The family sees your fee before booking. The first lesson is a free demo at their home, and we ask a parent to be at home for it; afterwards you both settle on a regular slot.

  6. Teach at home, online or both

From there, teach at home within your own zone, online for students anywhere in Punjab or India, or both: perhaps Saturday mornings in Dayanand Nagar and video lessons on weekday evenings.

Boards you can teach in Amritsar

Amritsar tutors meet PSEB students alongside CBSE, ICSE and ISC learners, and occasionally IB or Cambridge IGCSE students. The Punjab School Education Board was created by a legislative enactment in November 1969, gained autonomy through a 1987 amendment, and is based at Vidya Bhawan, Phase-8, SAS Nagar (Mohali). Its website publishes syllabi, a question bank, the structure of question papers and model test papers. Read patterns and notices only on the official sites: pseb.ac.in, cbseacademic.nic.in, cisce.org, ibo.org and cambridgeinternational.org. Name each board you teach on your profile.

Punjab School Education Board (PSEB)

Middle, Matriculation and Senior Secondary examinations

PSEB prescribes the curriculum, courses of study and textbooks, and its academic wing of subject experts revises them, so lesson plans should start from the board's own books. Practise with the question bank, question-paper structures and model test papers on pseb.ac.in, and ask an Amritsar student whether Punjabi, Hindi or English suits them.

CBSE

Classes 1–12

An Amritsar CBSE student may live in a Ranjit Avenue flat or a Sultanwind house, and may have cousins on PSEB with different books and dates. Build lessons on the NCERT chapter the school is teaching, practise with CBSE's published sample papers and marking schemes, and check notices on cbseacademic.nic.in.

CISCE (ICSE and ISC)

ICSE (Class 10); ISC (Class 12)

ICSE and ISC students in Amritsar face long written answers across a wide syllabus, including prescribed English literature. Plan revision across the full year rather than the last term, time answers under exam conditions, and keep internal assessment work moving. Specimen papers and regulations are on cisce.org.

IB Diploma Programme

Diploma Programme (Classes 11–12)

IB Diploma students are few in Amritsar, so an IB tutor here may teach most of them online. Check the subject and whether it is SL or HL, guide the Internal Assessment and Extended Essay without writing any part of them, and plan from the subject guides published on ibo.org.

Cambridge / Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

IGCSE (Classes 9–10)

For IGCSE, find out first whether the school follows Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, and which tier the student is entered for. Lessons that pay off focus on command words and past papers marked strictly against the official scheme. If the family lives across the city from you, say Verka when you are in New Amritsar, offer online lessons.

Where in Amritsar tutors are needed

Zones marked "Tutors needed" have the fewest tutors living in or travelling to them, so families there mostly see online tutors today. Add them to your travel areas to reach those families first.

Central Amritsar

Tutors needed

Expect short rides but tricky parking: Hall Bazaar, Lawrence Road and the GT Road markets have little space in the daytime, so ask each family where a two-wheeler can stand. Weekday mornings near the court complex at Rani Ka Bagh are slow, and the market roads fill again in the evening. Green Avenue and Dayanand Nagar are calmer inside, with houses and builder floors where you ring at the door.

Dayanand Nagar, Green Avenue, Lawrence Road, Rani Ka Bagh

North Amritsar

Tutors needed

Addresses here run on block letters, so ask for the block, house number and nearest block market before a first visit. Some apartment buildings in Ranjit Avenue keep a gate register, while Basant Avenue and Kashmir Avenue homes are largely houses and floors. Office visitors around the Municipal Corporation's office fill the internal roads by day, so late-afternoon lessons fit well, and Loharka Road colonies need a pinned location.

Basant Avenue, Kashmir Avenue, Loharka Road, Ranjit Avenue

Majitha Road and Batala Road

Tutors needed

Two long roads make this zone wide, so list only the stretch you can reach every week. The 88 Feet Road lets you cross between Majitha Road and Batala Road without going through the centre. Batala Road is heavy at peak hours towards Verka Bypass Chowk; Mohkampura's lanes suit a scooter, and Green Field families should give the phase as well as the house number.

Green Field, Majitha Road, Mohkampura, Verka

West Amritsar

Tutors needed

Three areas on three different stretches: Putlighar on the GT Road near the main railway station, Chheharta further west on the same highway, and Guru Amar Dass Avenue on Ajnala Road. A railway crossing near Putlighar closes several times a day, so leave slack or teach students on your own side of the line. Homes above shops in Putlighar need the entrance and floor confirmed in advance.

Chheharta, Guru Amar Dass Avenue, Putlighar

South-East Amritsar

Tutors needed

New Amritsar's Trust flats need a block and floor, plus the family's advice on reaching the gate from the GT Road service lane; elsewhere, East Mohan Nagar, Tarn Taran Road and Sultanwind homes mostly open at street level. Tarn Taran Road colonies run a long way, so ask for the colony and lane. Sultanwind's older core has narrow lanes, and weekday afternoons avoid evening traffic.

Women tutors welcome

For women tutors: you set the terms

Women tutors are welcome on NXTutors in Amritsar, whether you prefer home lessons, online lessons or a mix. You choose the localities on your profile and the hours you show to parents, so a tutor living in Green Avenue might teach at home only around Central Amritsar and take North or South-East students online. Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check, and before any regular classes there is a free demo, for which we ask a parent to be at home. These are the platform's own controls; they are not a promise about any individual family or tutor.

  • Pick home, online or hybrid on your profile, and change it whenever you like.
  • Add only the Amritsar localities you are happy to reach, and leave out any road you would rather not travel in the evening.
  • Keep the hours on your profile current so parents see when you are free.
  • Every new family starts with a free demo, and we ask a parent to be at home for it.
  • Where a building in Ranjit Avenue or New Amritsar keeps a visitor register, ask the family to give the guard your name.
  • Agree fees, timings and any changes with a parent rather than with the student.
  • Teach younger children in a shared room with an adult at home, and keep your camera on in online lessons.
  • If anything worries you, stop the lessons and tell NXTutors; in an emergency, call 112 first.

Read the safeguarding policy and how the ID check works.

Why tutors choose NXTutors

What is different from a directory listing or a tuition bureau.

  • You set your fee

Your fee per class is on your profile, and families see it before the demo, so there is no haggling after a good class.

  • Matched, nearest first

Each request goes to two or three tutors who fit it, nearest first, not to a long list of people chasing the same family.

  • Demo first

The first class is a free demo. Families decide after meeting you, not from a phone call or a price list.

  • No made-up leads

We never show invented requests. The only request details on these pages are real and anonymised, and only once there are three or more.

  • An ID check for everyone

Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. Real tutors who pass carry the Verified badge; sample profiles are always labelled.

  • AI-first, with real teachers

Parents can ask NXT AI about your profile and compare tutors side by side. The teaching is always yours.

Tutor plans and what each includes

Tutor plans are listed on our pricing page with what each one includes. Read them before you apply; we do not quote prices on this page. Tutors are independent: you set your own fee, and families pay you for the classes they take.

Questions from tutors

How do Amritsar tuition requests reach a tutor?

Through a shortlist, not an open board. A parent shares the class, board, subjects, locality and preferred times, and NXTutors picks two or three tutors: those living in that locality first, then those who already travel there, then the zone, the rest of Amritsar and online tutors. Parents see each fee before the free demo.

Can I teach students outside Amritsar online?

Yes. Online teaching is a separate setting from home visits, so a student elsewhere in Punjab or in another state can be matched with you by subject, board and class. Your Amritsar home students carry on unchanged, and the two can sit side by side in one week's timetable without any extra travel.

Which Amritsar localities should I put on my profile?

Only those you can reach reliably every week. A tutor in Ranjit Avenue might add Basant Avenue, Kashmir Avenue and Loharka Road; one in East Mohan Nagar might add Sultanwind and the Tarn Taran Road colonies. Crossing the whole city on weekday evenings rarely lasts, so keep the list short and honest.

What ID check do tutors in Amritsar go through?

Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID. You confirm your phone or email with a one-time code and upload a government photo ID. It confirms identity only and is not a police or background check. Details are on /how-we-verify-tutors.

Do tutors pay to join, and who sets the lesson fee?

No. Joining and onboarding cost nothing, and the Free plan comes with 160 lead credits a month. The paid plans listed on /pricing are optional subscriptions for extra visibility, AI tools and more credits, never a fee to apply for a tuition. You set your own lesson fee, and Amritsar parents see it on your profile before the free demo. Since families can switch tutor at no cost, a well-prepared demo and steady punctuality matter a great deal in keeping a student.

Can a woman tutor in Amritsar keep home lessons close to where she lives?

Yes. Home requests follow the localities you choose, so a tutor in Green Field could keep to Green Field, Majitha Road and Kashmir Avenue and teach other students online. Your profile hours show parents when you are free, and every family begins with a free demo; we ask a parent to be at home during it.

Which boards should an Amritsar tutor list?

Only boards you can teach confidently. That might be PSEB alone, or PSEB with CBSE, ICSE or ISC; add IB or IGCSE only with genuine experience. Mention the classes you take and whether you explain in Punjabi, Hindi or English, because every request names a board and class and the language shapes the demo.

Can an Amritsar family have both home and online lessons with me?

Yes, if you switch on both modes. Agree the mix with the parent after the demo. For a family across the city, for example in Chheharta when you live in New Amritsar, a weekend home visit plus weekday online sessions keeps the routine regular without long rides through peak traffic.
