Biology tutor jobs: teaching the life sciences at home or online

Biology has a reputation as the subject you can learn by heart, and that reputation is exactly why students get stuck. A Class 11 student can recite the stages of mitosis and still not see why chromosome number matters; a Class 12 student can draw a nephron perfectly and still not explain how urine is concentrated; a NEET aspirant can memorise a page and still miss the statement-based question that tests whether they understood it. Families looking for a biology tutor want someone who can turn memory into understanding.

This page is for biologists, life-science and medical graduates, doctors, pharmacists and teachers thinking of tutoring biology through NXTutors. It focuses on senior school biology, entrance-level depth, international programmes and the skills specific to the subject. Joining is free. We cannot promise how many biology requests will reach you, students or income.

How you get tuition work on NXTutors

Six steps from applying to your first class. Swipe to see each step.

  1. Sign up with a one-time code

Decide your biology class bands and whether you teach NEET, IGCSE or IB biology as well.

  2. Upload your ID; our team reviews it

Apply on WhatsApp; joining is free. Confirm with a one-time code at first login.

  3. Your profile carries the Verified badge

List biology separately from general science, add fee, mode and travel areas, and upload your ID.

  4. A family nearby sends a request

Unlock masked biology leads that match, and propose a fee with up to three demo slots.

  5. Free demo; the family sees your fee first

In the free demo, let the student explain a hard topic, then rebuild it with a diagram.

  6. Teach at home, online or both

Build understanding first, then lock in detail with spaced recall and genetics practice.

Where biology requests come from

Below Class 9, biology sits inside general science, and those requests are covered on our science page. Biology becomes a subject of its own for most families in Classes 11 and 12, when students in the medical stream face a dense syllabus: diversity of living organisms, cell structure and division, plant and human physiology in Class 11; reproduction, genetics and evolution, biology in human welfare, biotechnology and ecology in Class 12.

Many of these students are also preparing for NEET (UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency, whose biology questions follow the NCERT content closely. Others are international-board students: Cambridge IGCSE biology, or IB Diploma biology at Standard or Higher Level. ICSE students meet biology as a separate paper within science from Class 9.

NCERT depth: the core of senior biology

For CBSE students and for most NEET aspirants, the NCERT biology textbooks are the core text, and depth means every line. Students who skim lose marks on statement-based questions built from a single sentence, a table footnote or a diagram label. A good biology tutor reads the chapter with the student, asks why each fact is true, and connects it to the related chapters elsewhere in the book.

Build understanding first, then memory. Once the student can explain the logic of a process, such as why the counter-current mechanism concentrates urine, the details are far easier to retain. Then use spaced revision and short daily recall to lock them in.

Teach students to read tables, flow charts and figure captions as carefully as the main text, because questions are often built from them. A short weekly quiz drawn from those parts of the chapter shows quickly whether the student is reading the whole book or only the paragraphs.

Diagrams, terminology and genetics

Diagrams carry marks on every board. Teach the student to draw from understanding rather than copying: start with the overall structure, add the parts in a logical order, and label with the textbook's terms. Have them redraw key diagrams from memory regularly until they are quick and accurate.

Genetics is where many biology students who are good at memory suddenly struggle, because it is problem-solving. Monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, inheritance patterns, pedigree analysis and the molecular basis of inheritance need step-by-step method and plenty of varied practice. A tutor comfortable with genetics problems is valued highly by families of senior students.

Ecology and human welfare chapters bring their own challenge: many facts with little structure. Group them into tables the student builds themselves, such as diseases with causes and prevention, or ecosystems with their features, and revisit the tables until the student can rebuild them from memory.

Practicals and the limits of home teaching

Senior biology on most boards includes a practical examination, with a record of experiments, spotting of specimens and slides, and a viva. Help students understand the aim, procedure, observations and precautions of each experiment, and practise identifying specimens from clear diagrams and photographs. Dissections and live specimens belong in the school laboratory, not in a family's home.

For IGCSE, find out whether the student sits the practical test or the alternative to practical; for the IB, each student carries out an individual investigation for internal assessment, which must remain their own work. You can teach experimental design, data handling and evaluation, but not write the investigation.

How biology differs from the science page

A general science tutor covers biology alongside physics and chemistry up to Class 10. Biology-only requests are different: they come mostly from senior students who need depth, entrance-level precision and a tutor who can answer the 'why' behind every process. If you teach Class 9 and 10 science as well, list both on your profile, but write a separate line about your senior biology so parents can see the specialist.

Families often ask whether a biology tutor has a medical or life-science background. If you do, say so truthfully; if not, explain how you came to teach the subject and how long you have taught it. Never claim results or ranks you cannot prove.

Winning a biology family in the demo

Requests reach you as masked leads showing class, board, subject, a short need, the area, the timing and a budget band. The first class with a family you are matched with is a free demo. Choose a topic the student finds difficult, ask them to explain it first, and then rebuild the explanation with them using a diagram. Finish with five quick statement-based questions on the same topic.

You set your own fee per class and the family sees it before the demo; senior and entrance-level biology often takes more preparation, so price it honestly. See how you get paid in the fee section further down.

Joining as a biology tutor

Joining is free. Apply on WhatsApp through the form on /become-a-tutor; the team replies and sets up your account. At first login you confirm with a one-time code, then add biology class bands, boards, entrance or international programmes, fee, mode and travel areas. Upload a government photo ID under Documents; tutors who join go through an ID check, and the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed it.

Biology suits online teaching for older students, with clear diagrams on a shared whiteboard. Related pages: /science-tutor-jobs, /jee-neet-tutor-jobs, /chemistry-tutor-jobs, /ib-igcse-tutor-jobs and /class-11-12-tutor-jobs.

Women tutors welcome

For women tutors: you set the terms

Women tutors are welcome on NXTutors, for home classes, online classes or both. You decide how, where and when you teach. These are the controls the product gives you, and the habits our safeguarding policy asks of tutors and families.

  • Choose home, online or hybrid teaching on your profile, and change it whenever you like.
  • List the areas you travel to: home requests come only from those areas.
  • Set your own days and timings; requests are matched to the hours you give.
  • Every match starts with a demo class, and our safeguarding policy asks the parent to be at home for it.
  • Teach where a parent or another adult is at home; in gated societies the family adds you to the gate or visitor register.
  • Keep messages with the parent or a family group, never a child's private chat.
  • Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. It confirms identity; it is not a police check.
  • Stop any time. If anything worries you, stop the classes and tell us on WhatsApp or through the contact page.

Read the safeguarding policy and how the ID check works.

Why tutors choose NXTutors

What is different from a directory listing or a tuition bureau.

  • You set your fee

Your fee per class is on your profile, and families see it before the demo, so there is no haggling after a good class.

  • Matched, nearest first

Each request goes to two or three tutors who fit it, nearest first, not to a long list of people chasing the same family.

  • Demo first

The first class is a free demo. Families decide after meeting you, not from a phone call or a price list.

  • No made-up leads

We never show invented requests. The only request details on these pages are real and anonymised, and only once there are three or more.

  • An ID check for everyone

Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. Real tutors who pass carry the Verified badge; sample profiles are always labelled.

  • AI-first, with real teachers

Parents can ask NXT AI about your profile and compare tutors side by side. The teaching is always yours.

Tutor plans and what each includes

Tutor plans are listed on our pricing page with what each one includes. Read them before you apply; we do not quote prices on this page. Tutors are independent: you set your own fee, and families pay you for the classes they take.

Questions from tutors

Can I teach only Class 11 and 12 biology?

Yes. You choose your class bands. Many biology-only tutors teach senior and entrance-level students and leave Class 6 to 10 science to general science tutors.

Do NEET students need a separate biology tutor?

Many look for one, because NEET biology rewards close knowledge of the NCERT content. Ask each family how they balance board and entrance preparation, and see /jee-neet-tutor-jobs for entrance-focused work.

Should I help with the biology practical record?

Help the student understand each experiment, its observations and precautions, and practise specimen identification. The record must be the student's own work, and dissections belong in school.

Do I need a medical degree to teach biology?

No. NXTutors sets no minimum qualification. A life-science or medical background helps families trust you, but they judge mostly by the free demo, and your profile must be true.

Can I teach IGCSE or IB biology online?

Yes. Online requests are matched on subject, class and board, so you can teach international-board students anywhere. Agree the tools for diagrams before the demo.

Does it cost anything to join as a biology tutor?

No. Joining, onboarding and the Free plan are free, and the Free plan includes monthly lead credits. Paid plans are optional and never needed to apply for a tuition.
