Tuition jobs for Class 1 to 5: teaching primary children with NXTutors

Primary tuition, Class 1 to 5, is close-to-home work. One patient tutor usually covers reading, English, maths, EVS and Hindi for a child, in short sessions several times a week, and the arrangement only works if you can arrive on time after school. On NXTutors, primary work starts when a parent sends a request with the child's class, school programme, the subjects that need help, their locality and the times that suit. We then shortlist two or three nearby tutors. This page explains what parents expect from a primary tutor, how the demo with a young child works, how requests travel and how to set up your profile.

You decide your areas, timings and fee per class, and parents see that fee before the demo. We make no claims about how many primary requests there will be where you live; that depends on families nearby and on the areas you list.

How you get tuition work on NXTutors

Six steps from applying to your first class. Swipe to see each step.

  1. Sign up with a one-time code

Sign up with a one-time code and add the primary classes you teach, the subjects you cover, such as reading, maths, EVS and Hindi, and the localities near you.

  2. Upload your ID; our team reviews it

Upload a government photo ID from the dashboard. Our team reviews it before any family can see you, and the same ID cannot be used for a second profile.

  3. Your profile carries the Verified badge

Your profile carries the Verified badge, showing Classes 1 to 5, your subjects, the after-school hours you keep and the fee you have set.

  4. A family nearby sends a request

A parent close by asks for help with a Class 2 child's reading, for example. Primary work is close-to-home, so tutors living nearest are shortlisted first.

  5. Free demo; the family sees your fee first

The demo is free for the family, and your fee is already known. Keep it short and friendly, where we ask a parent to be at home, and show how a normal session would run.

  6. Teach at home, online or both

Teach in a shared room at the family's home, in short sessions on the days agreed, and keep homework and progress notes going through the parent.

What a primary tutor is asked to do

Parents of young children usually come with something specific: reading has stalled, maths facts are shaky, Hindi is new because the family moved from another state or from abroad, homework has turned into a nightly argument, or the child has changed school or board mid-year. Your first job is to find which of these is really in the way.

In Classes 1 and 2 that means letter sounds, blending and common tricky words taught in a clear order, with short daily reading at the right level. From Class 3 it is fluency and understanding, then full sentences, paragraphs, simple stories and letters. In maths, number sense comes before speed: place value, what the operations mean, times tables with understanding, then fractions, measurement and simple geometry by Classes 4 and 5. EVS asks the child to observe and explain in their own words. For Hindi, the order is letters and matras, reading aloud, writing, then grammar; explaining in English when the child is stuck helps children who hear little Hindi at home.

Boards and programmes at primary level

There are no board exams in primary school: in both CBSE and CISCE schools the first board exam comes at Class 10. Primary tutoring is about skills, confidence and homework habits, not exam drilling. In CBSE and ICSE schools, follow the textbooks the school has chosen and its chapter order, and in ICSE schools build clear written English early.

The IB Primary Years Programme is an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary framework for ages 3 to 12, built around six themes, with the Exhibition, a group inquiry, in the final year. Support the reading, writing and maths skills that feed each unit, and never do project work for the child. Cambridge Primary is typically for ages 5 to 11 across English, mathematics and science, with optional assessments that include Cambridge Primary Checkpoint; follow the school's stage and help the child explain reasoning. Ask the parent for the book list; it tells you more than the school's name.

The demo with a young child

The first class is a free demo for the family, and the parent is advised to sit nearby throughout. Start warmly: talk to the child for a little while and learn something about them. Then check level by asking them to read a short passage aloud or solve two or three sums before you decide what to teach.

Parents watch whether the child did most of the reading, writing and counting, whether you stayed patient with mistakes (no sighing, no taking the pencil away), whether you changed activity when attention dropped, and whether you gave them a clear summary of what you noticed and would work on first. They will also ask the child whether they would like you to come again. If it is not the right fit, the family can try the next tutor on the shortlist, and switching later is free for them.

How Class 1 to 5 requests reach you

Because sessions are short and frequent, distance matters more here than for older students. Home requests go to the nearest tutors first: those who live in the family's area, then those who list it as a place they travel to, then the zone and the city. Online tutors come last, since young children usually learn better with someone beside them. Two or three tutors are shortlisted for each request.

List the localities you can reach reliably in the after-school hours, and keep the list honest; a short, accurate list serves you better than a long one you cannot keep up through exam season and the monsoon. Your fee per class is on your profile and parents see it before the demo. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Homework support, routine and safety

Parents want homework help that is not homework done for the child. Keep a fixed routine of the same days, time and table in a common room. Let the child read the task first and say what it asks, attempt it, and correct their own mistakes with a hint rather than your pen. Keep part of every session for reading aloud, tables or Hindi letters so the child builds skills and not just a neat notebook, and leave a short note for the parent on what was hard and what to practise.

Expect families to follow simple safety rules, and welcome them: an adult at home for every session, classes at a dining table or another shared room with the door open, your name added to the society's visitor app or gate register, and all messages going through a parent's phone, never directly to the child.

Your profile, the ID check and tutor plans

Write Class 1 to 5, all subjects, if that is what you teach, and name the subjects you are strongest in, including Hindi or phonics. Mention the programmes you have worked with, such as CBSE, ICSE, IB PYP or Cambridge Primary, the sessions a week you can offer, and the after-school slots you keep free. Online can suit a Class 5 child who is comfortable on a laptop or a short Hindi or reading session with a parent nearby; if you offer it, say so and agree the video tool with the family, as NXTutors does not provide its own classroom.

Tutors who join go through an ID check: a one-time code to confirm phone or email, then a government photo ID reviewed by our team before the profile is marked Verified. Passing adds a Verified badge, which confirms identity; it is not police verification. How we verify tutors sets out the steps. Joining is free, and the Free plan includes 160 lead credits a month; paid plans on /pricing are optional extras, never a fee to apply for a tuition.

Women tutors welcome

For women tutors: you set the terms

Families with young children sometimes ask for a woman tutor, and NXTutors treats that as their preference rather than a rule about who can teach small children. For women who tutor Classes 1 to 5, the work is usually close to home, so the controls matter: you choose the localities you visit, the after-school hours you keep, and whether some work is online. Every tutor who joins goes through an ID check before the profile is marked Verified, and each first lesson is a demo where we ask a parent to be at home.

  • Keep home visits to the few localities you can reach after school.
  • Pick the days and hours that suit you; short, regular sessions suit young children.
  • Online is possible for older primary children with a parent nearby.
  • Expect a parent at home for the demo and an adult in the house for every lesson.
  • Teach in a shared room, never a closed bedroom.
  • Keep messages with the parent; do not contact the child directly.
  • Stop any arrangement that worries you and tell us; /safeguarding-policy explains how we act on reports.

Read the safeguarding policy and how the ID check works.

Why tutors choose NXTutors

What is different from a directory listing or a tuition bureau.

  • You set your fee

Your fee per class is on your profile, and families see it before the demo, so there is no haggling after a good class.

  • Matched, nearest first

Each request goes to two or three tutors who fit it, nearest first, not to a long list of people chasing the same family.

  • Demo first

The first class is a free demo. Families decide after meeting you, not from a phone call or a price list.

  • No made-up leads

We never show invented requests. The only request details on these pages are real and anonymised, and only once there are three or more.

  • An ID check for everyone

Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. Real tutors who pass carry the Verified badge; sample profiles are always labelled.

  • AI-first, with real teachers

Parents can ask NXT AI about your profile and compare tutors side by side. The teaching is always yours.

Tutor plans and what each includes

Tutor plans are listed on our pricing page with what each one includes. Read them before you apply; we do not quote prices on this page. Tutors are independent: you set your own fee, and families pay you for the classes they take.

Questions from tutors

Are there tuition jobs for Class 1 to 5 near me?

Primary requests are matched nearest first, so the areas you list decide which families can see you. Add every locality you can reach reliably after school, and requests from families there are offered to tutors in or travelling to that area before anyone further away. We do not publish counts; what reaches you depends on families nearby.

Can I teach all subjects for a primary child?

Yes, and at this level one tutor for all core subjects is the usual arrangement: reading, English, maths, EVS and Hindi. A single tutor sees how a reading difficulty also affects maths word problems and EVS answers. Name the subjects you cover, and any you would rather leave out.

Is online tuition possible for Class 1 to 5?

It can be, in limited cases: a Class 5 child already comfortable on a laptop, or a short reading or Hindi session with a parent beside the child. Home teaching suits young children better. If you offer online, agree the call tool with the parent and keep the child's notebook on camera.

How often do primary children have tuition?

Shorter and more frequent works better at this age. For all subjects plus homework, three to five sessions a week is a common starting plan, reviewed after about a month. One weak subject, such as Hindi, may need only two sessions a week.

What does the NXTutors ID check cover?

Identity. You confirm your phone or email with a one-time code and upload a government photo ID, which our team reviews before your profile is marked Verified. Tutors who pass carry a Verified badge. It is not a police or background check, which is why families also use the demo and simple safety habits.

Is there a cost to join as a primary tutor?

No. Joining NXTutors and setting up your profile are free. The Free plan includes 160 lead credits a month, which you spend to unlock the family requests you want to answer. Paid plans (/pricing) are optional and add visibility, AI tools and more credits; none is a fee to apply for a tuition. The fee you charge for each class is set by you and is shown to parents before the free demo, separately from your plan.
