Part-time tutor jobs: teach the hours you actually have
Most private tutoring in India is part-time by nature. A family rarely wants more than an hour or two on a given day, lessons cluster after school and at weekends, and one student usually means two or three fixed slots a week. That makes tutoring one of the few kinds of teaching work that can sit beside a degree, a job, a household or another practice without either side suffering, provided you plan the hours honestly before you accept anyone.

This page is for anyone thinking of tutoring a few hours a week through NXTutors: how to decide how many students you can carry, how to set availability so requests fit your life, and what families expect from someone who is not tutoring full time. Joining is free. We cannot tell you how many requests will come your way; that depends on your subjects, your area and what families ask for, and nothing here promises students or income.

Start with the hours, not the students
Before you build a profile, write down the hours in an ordinary week that you can give without strain. Be specific: Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 7 pm, Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon. Then subtract travel. A home lesson of one hour that needs thirty minutes each way is a two-hour commitment, and two such lessons on one evening can swallow the whole of it. Online lessons cost no travel but need a quiet room and a steady connection at that hour.
A sensible part-time load is the one you could keep in your busiest month, not your quietest. If your own exams, a work deadline or a festival week would force you to cancel, plan for that week. Families forgive an occasional change agreed in advance; they do not forgive a tutor who disappears for three weeks in February.
How many students is realistic?
Count in slots, not in families. A Class 10 student preparing for boards may need three sessions a week; a Class 4 child doing homework support may need two short ones; an IB student may want one long session plus a check-in. Two families can fill the same number of hours as five, so it is better to say yes to fewer students and keep every promised slot than to say yes to everyone and teach tired.
Leave one slot spare. Reschedules, exam-week extra sessions and the occasional make-up class have to go somewhere, and a part-time tutor with no spare slot ends up cancelling. When you are full, pause your profile rather than ignoring messages; you can switch it back on when a student finishes.
Setting availability so the right requests reach you
On your profile you choose the subjects and class bands you teach, the boards you are comfortable with, home, online or both, and for home lessons the areas you will travel to. Keep the travel list tight. A part-time tutor who names three neighbouring localities gets requests that fit a single evening; one who names the whole city gets requests that look tempting and cannot be reached in time.
Say in your profile text when you are free, in plain words: weekday evenings after 6, or Saturday and Sunday only. A family that needs 4 pm on weekdays can then move on without either side wasting a demo. Online can widen your reach without adding travel, which is often the simplest way to fill two odd hours that are too short for a commute.
What families expect from a part-time tutor
Parents do not mind that tutoring is not your only work. What they need is consistency: fixed days, a fixed time, homework checked when you said it would be, and a reply to a message within a reasonable window. Tell them at the start which days you are reachable and how; it prevents the worry that builds when a parent writes on a Monday morning and hears nothing until Thursday.
They also expect you to know what the school is doing this week. Ask for the timetable of unit tests and the current chapter, keep a short note after every lesson, and share a two-line update with the parent every couple of weeks. That habit does more for a part-time tutor's reputation than extra hours ever could.
The demo when your time is limited
The first class with a family you are matched with is a free demo, so a part-time tutor should choose demo slots carefully. Offer slots you could keep every week afterwards; a demo on a Wednesday at 4 pm is pointless if the lessons can only happen on weekends. Use the demo to work through something the student is stuck on right now, then tell the parent plainly how many sessions a week you can offer and on which days.
If the family needs more hours than you have, say so before they choose you. Some will happily take two sessions a week from a tutor they like; others need four and should look elsewhere. Either answer is better than starting with a schedule you cannot sustain.
How requests become leads, briefly
A request reaches you as a lead only when it matches what your profile says: subject, class band, board where it matters, mode and, for home tuition, an area you travel to. You see a masked card first, with the class, the need, the area, the timing and a budget band, and you decide whether to spend credits to unlock it. Read the timing line first; for a part-time tutor it rules out more leads than anything else. The page sections below set out how credits, fees and payments work in full, so see how you get paid there.
Once you unlock a lead, you send one proposal with your fee per hour and up to three demo slots. You set the fee yourself and the family sees it before the demo, so price for the hours you can actually give.
Joining as a part-time tutor
Joining is free. Apply on WhatsApp through the form on /become-a-tutor; the team replies and sets up your account. At first login you confirm with a one-time code, then fill in subjects, classes, boards, fee, mode and travel areas, and upload a government photo ID under Documents. Tutors who join go through an ID check, and the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID; it is an identity check, not a police check, and /how-we-verify-tutors explains it.
You teach as an independent professional, so you decide your hours and are free to teach outside the platform too; if you hold another job, check that employer's rules for yourself. Women tutors welcome
For women tutors: you set the terms
Women tutors are welcome on NXTutors, for home classes, online classes or both. You decide how, where and when you teach. These are the controls the product gives you, and the habits our safeguarding policy asks of tutors and families.
- Choose home, online or hybrid teaching on your profile, and change it whenever you like.
- List the areas you travel to: home requests come only from those areas.
- Set your own days and timings; requests are matched to the hours you give.
- Every match starts with a demo class, and our safeguarding policy asks the parent to be at home for it.
- Teach where a parent or another adult is at home; in gated societies the family adds you to the gate or visitor register.
- Keep messages with the parent or a family group, never a child's private chat.
- Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. It confirms identity; it is not a police check.
- Stop any time. If anything worries you, stop the classes and tell us on WhatsApp or through the contact page.
Read the safeguarding policy and how the ID check works.
Why tutors choose NXTutors
What is different from a directory listing or a tuition bureau.
-
You set your fee
Your fee per class is on your profile, and families see it before the demo, so there is no haggling after a good class.
-
Matched, nearest first
Each request goes to two or three tutors who fit it, nearest first, not to a long list of people chasing the same family.
-
Demo first
The first class is a free demo. Families decide after meeting you, not from a phone call or a price list.
-
No made-up leads
We never show invented requests. The only request details on these pages are real and anonymised, and only once there are three or more.
-
An ID check for everyone
Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. Real tutors who pass carry the Verified badge; sample profiles are always labelled.
-
AI-first, with real teachers
Parents can ask NXT AI about your profile and compare tutors side by side. The teaching is always yours.
Tutor plans and what each includes
Tutor plans are listed on our pricing page with what each one includes. Read them before you apply; we do not quote prices on this page. Tutors are independent: you set your own fee, and families pay you for the classes they take.
Questions from tutors
Is there a minimum number of hours I must teach?
No. You choose your subjects, your hours and how many families you take. The only firm expectation is that you keep the schedule you agree with each family, so set availability you can sustain through your own busy weeks.
Can I pause my profile when I am full or busy?
Yes, and you should. Pausing stops new requests while you look after the students you already have. Switch the profile back on when a slot frees up, and keep your listed days and times current so new requests match your real week.
Is part-time tutoring better done at home or online?
It depends on your week. Home lessons work when the family lives close enough that travel does not double the time; online lessons fill short gaps and reach students further away. Many part-time tutors keep one or two nearby home students and teach the rest online.
Does joining cost anything if I only want a few students?
No. Applying, onboarding and the Free plan cost nothing, and the Free plan includes monthly lead credits. Paid plans are optional subscriptions for more visibility, AI tools and credits; you never need one to apply for a tuition or to get students.
Can I set different fees for different classes?
Yes. You set your own fee for each class band, and the family sees it before the free demo. Charge only what you showed, and agree any change in advance for future classes only.
What happens if my schedule changes after I start with a family?
Tell the parent as early as you can and offer alternative slots. If you can no longer teach the student, give reasonable notice so the family can arrange someone else; switching tutors is free for them, and a clean hand-over protects your reputation.
