Class 9 and 10 tutor jobs: the two years before the first board exam

For many Indian families, Class 9 is when tuition stops being optional. The jump from Class 8 is real: chapters get longer, mathematics turns abstract, science splits into three subjects in all but name, and everyone at home knows that a board examination waits at the end of Class 10. Parents who never hired a tutor before start looking in the first months of Class 9, and those who waited often look urgently in Class 10.

This page is for tutors who want to teach these two years, in one subject or several. It covers what families typically ask for in each year, how boards differ at this stage, how to plan a year that ends in a board exam, and how to show in a demo that you can carry a student there. Joining NXTutors is free. We cannot predict how many Class 9 or 10 requests will reach you, and nothing here promises students or income.

How you get tuition work on NXTutors

Six steps from applying to your first class. Swipe to see each step.

  1. Sign up with a one-time code

Decide whether you teach one subject or several for Classes 9 and 10, and on which boards.

  2. Upload your ID; our team reviews it

Apply on WhatsApp; joining is free. Confirm with a one-time code at first login.

  3. Your profile carries the Verified badge

List the exact subjects, the Class 9 and 10 band, boards, fee and travel areas, then upload your ID.

  4. A family nearby sends a request

Unlock masked leads that match, and propose a fee and up to three demo slots.

  5. Free demo; the family sees your fee first

In the free demo, go through the questions where the last test lost marks and teach the idea behind each.

  6. Teach at home, online or both

Share a month-by-month chapter map with the family and add timed practice before pre-boards.

Class 9 and Class 10 are different jobs

Class 9 is a foundation year. Students meet algebraic identities, coordinate geometry, the structure of the atom, motion and force, and a heavier load of history and grammar, often all within a few months. The aim of a Class 9 tutor is to stop gaps forming: steady practice, clean notes and the habit of writing complete answers. Families who start here usually want a calm, regular tutor rather than an intensive one.

Class 10 is an examination year. The syllabus has to be finished early enough to leave months for revision and full papers, pre-board examinations come round, and every unit test feels like a forecast. Families now want structure: a plan to cover the syllabus, a revision calendar, timed practice and honest feedback on where marks are being lost.

One subject or the whole set?

Requests at this stage come in two shapes. Some families want a specialist for the subject that is going wrong, most often mathematics or science, sometimes English or a second language. Others want one tutor to cover maths and science together, or all main subjects for a student who needs general support and supervision.

Be clear on your profile about which shape you take. A tutor who lists only Class 9 and 10 mathematics receives maths requests; one who lists maths and science for those classes is offered combined requests too. Do not list subjects you would only teach reluctantly; a combined request you cannot fully serve becomes a family looking for a replacement mid-year.

How the boards differ at this stage

On CBSE, the NCERT textbooks are the base and the board publishes sample question papers and marking schemes on cbseacademic.nic.in; work through the current ones before you plan a Class 10 year, because they show the present mix of question types. Under CISCE, the ICSE examination at the end of Class 10 covers a wider spread of subjects, with English language and literature as separate papers and internal assessment in subjects, and specimen papers are on cisce.org.

State boards run their own Class 10 examinations, such as the SSLC in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the SSC in Telangana and Maharashtra, and Madhyamik in West Bengal, each with its own textbooks and pattern. If you teach a state-board student, use the state textbook and the board's own model papers rather than CBSE material.

Planning a Class 10 year

Ask for the school's syllabus split and test calendar at the very first meeting. Map the chapters against the months, leaving a block before pre-boards for revision and full papers. Share that map with the parent; it reassures them more than any promise and lets them see where the student is at each point.

From the middle of the year, add timed practice. Teach students to read the whole paper first, allot time by marks, set out working fully where steps carry marks, and check units and labels. Many Class 10 marks are lost not to ignorance but to rushed or untidy answers, and that is exactly what a tutor can fix.

Working with a fourteen- or fifteen-year-old

Students at this age are sensitive to being talked down to and to being compared with others. Treat them as partners in the plan: show them the chapter map, ask which tests worry them, let them choose the order of topics within a week. Praise effort and method, not only marks, and keep criticism specific to the work.

Talk to the parent too, but not over the student's head. A brief joint conversation once a month, covering what is improving and what needs more work, keeps everyone aligned and avoids the parent learning about a bad test only from the report card.

Winning the demo for Class 9 or 10

Requests reach you as masked leads: class, board, subject, the need in a line, the area, the timing and a budget band. The first class with a family you are matched with is a free demo. Ask beforehand for the student's latest test paper, then use the demo to go through two or three of the questions where marks were lost, teaching the idea behind each mistake.

End by outlining what the next month would look like, with the number of sessions a week and what each would cover. You set your own fee for each class and the family sees it before the demo; the fee section further down this page explains how you get paid.

Women tutors welcome

For women tutors: you set the terms

Women tutors are welcome on NXTutors, for home classes, online classes or both. You decide how, where and when you teach. These are the controls the product gives you, and the habits our safeguarding policy asks of tutors and families.

  • Choose home, online or hybrid teaching on your profile, and change it whenever you like.
  • List the areas you travel to: home requests come only from those areas.
  • Set your own days and timings; requests are matched to the hours you give.
  • Every match starts with a demo class, and our safeguarding policy asks the parent to be at home for it.
  • Teach where a parent or another adult is at home; in gated societies the family adds you to the gate or visitor register.
  • Keep messages with the parent or a family group, never a child's private chat.
  • Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. It confirms identity; it is not a police check.
  • Stop any time. If anything worries you, stop the classes and tell us on WhatsApp or through the contact page.

Read the safeguarding policy and how the ID check works.

Why tutors choose NXTutors

What is different from a directory listing or a tuition bureau.

  • You set your fee

Your fee per class is on your profile, and families see it before the demo, so there is no haggling after a good class.

  • Matched, nearest first

Each request goes to two or three tutors who fit it, nearest first, not to a long list of people chasing the same family.

  • Demo first

The first class is a free demo. Families decide after meeting you, not from a phone call or a price list.

  • No made-up leads

We never show invented requests. The only request details on these pages are real and anonymised, and only once there are three or more.

  • An ID check for everyone

Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. Real tutors who pass carry the Verified badge; sample profiles are always labelled.

  • AI-first, with real teachers

Parents can ask NXT AI about your profile and compare tutors side by side. The teaching is always yours.

Tutor plans and what each includes

Tutor plans are listed on our pricing page with what each one includes. Read them before you apply; we do not quote prices on this page. Tutors are independent: you set your own fee, and families pay you for the classes they take.

Questions from tutors

When do families usually look for a Class 9 or 10 tutor?

Often early in Class 9, when the jump in difficulty first shows, and again in Class 10 as the board year begins or after a disappointing unit test. Requests can arrive at any point in the year.

Should I teach maths and science together for Class 10?

Only if you can teach both properly. List exactly the subjects you are confident in; combined requests reach tutors who list both, and a family whose second subject is neglected usually looks for someone else.

Where do I find the current Class 10 question pattern?

From the board itself: CBSE sample papers and marking schemes on cbseacademic.nic.in, ICSE specimen papers on cisce.org, and model papers on your state board's own website.

How many sessions a week do Class 10 students usually need?

It varies with the student and the subjects. Agree it with the family after the demo, and leave room to add sessions before pre-boards and the board examination if both sides agree.

Can I teach Class 9 and 10 students online?

Yes. Set your mode to online or both. Online requests are matched on subject, class and board rather than distance, so you can teach a student in another city.

Does it cost anything to join as a Class 9 and 10 tutor?

No. Joining, onboarding and the Free plan are free, and the Free plan includes monthly lead credits. Paid plans are optional and never needed to apply for a tuition.
