English tutor jobs: reading, writing and literature tuition through NXTutors

English tutoring is aimed at whichever skill is actually weak: a six-year-old who guesses at words, a Class 10 student losing marks on letter format, an ISC student whose compositions run out of time, or a Grade 8 student new to an international school. On NXTutors, each piece of English work begins with a parent's request describing the class, board, the worry and the locality, and we shortlist two or three tutors who fit. This page sets out what parents expect from an English tutor at each stage and board, how the demo runs, how requests are routed and how to present yourself.

You choose the age groups and boards you teach, the areas you can reach, whether you work online, and your fee per class. Parents see the fee before the demo. We do not promise any number of students; what reaches you depends on your profile, your location and the requests families send.

How you get tuition work on NXTutors

Six steps from applying to your first class. Swipe to see each step.

  1. Sign up with a one-time code

Sign up with a one-time code and say which English you teach: early reading, grammar and writing, board literature for ICSE or ISC, or international-school English.

  2. Upload your ID; our team reviews it

Upload a government photo ID through your dashboard; our team reviews it before your profile is marked Verified, and an ID number can belong to only one tutor account.

  3. Your profile carries the Verified badge

Your profile carries the Verified badge, showing classes, boards, the skills you focus on, home or online, and the fee you set for each class.

  4. A family nearby sends a request

A parent asks for help with a Class 10 student losing marks on letter writing, for instance. Two or three tutors who fit are shortlisted, nearest first for home lessons.

  5. Free demo; the family sees your fee first

The family has seen your fee, and the demo is free for them. Ask for a recent piece of the student's writing and teach from that, not from a script.

  6. Teach at home, online or both

Teach at home, online or both. Reading aloud, comprehension and essay feedback all work over video when the parent can see the screen; agree the pattern at the demo.

The four skills and what changes with age

Every board divides English into reading, writing, grammar and usage, and speaking and listening, with literature running across them. A useful tutor finds which of these is costing the student marks or confidence and spends the time there. Grammar sticks better when it is taught inside the student's own writing than as separate worksheets.

Up to Class 2 the work is letter sounds, blending, sight words and reading aloud with gentle correction, in short sessions. Classes 3 to 5 move to fluency, spelling patterns and full paragraphs. Classes 6 to 8 bring grammar in context, letters and early literature answers. Classes 9 and 10 are about board formats, unseen passages under time and literature answers within word limits, and Classes 11 and 12 about longer compositions, critical reading and project work. IGCSE and IB students need analysis of unseen texts, coursework and oral practice.

What each board's English paper asks

CBSE Class 10 English Language and Literature is an 80-mark paper (reading 20, writing and grammar 20, literature 40 from First Flight and Footprints without Feet) plus 20 marks of internal assessment, which include listening and speaking. The writing tasks are a formal letter and an analytical paragraph on a map, chart or graph. In Class 12 English Core, grammar leaves the paper and literature from Flamingo and Vistas is worth 40.

CISCE treats English as two subjects. ICSE Paper 1, English Language, and Paper 2, Literature in English, are each two hours and 80 marks with 20 marks of internal assessment; Paper 1 asks for a composition of about 300 to 350 words, a letter, a notice with a matching e-mail, an unseen passage with a summary, and grammar. ISC language and literature are each a three-hour, 80-mark paper plus 20 marks of project work, and the composition runs to 400 to 450 words chosen from six topics.

For Cambridge IGCSE, know whether the student is entered for First Language English (0500), which rewards analysis of how a writer uses language, or English as a Second Language (0510), which rewards accurate understanding and clear writing for a purpose. IB Language A: Language and Literature has a guided analysis of unseen non-literary texts, a comparative essay on two literary works and an individual oral, with an extra essay at HL; coursework must stay the student's own.

The English demo: diagnosing from real writing

The demo is the opening class with a family and is free for them. Ask the parent to bring a recent piece of written work or a marked school paper, and start there rather than with a textbook chapter. Parents are advised to watch whether you read the child's writing before teaching, gave two clear priorities instead of twenty corrections, had the student writing or speaking for a good part of the hour, knew the writing tasks on their board, and suggested something to read next.

For a young child the demo is shorter and livelier: reading aloud together, sounding out new words, talking about the story and a little writing. A tutor who hands over a comprehension worksheet and checks it at the end is not teaching reading, and parents know to look for that. If the family later prefers another tutor, switching costs them nothing.

How English requests reach a tutor, and your fee

A family's request says what worries them (reading, writing, grammar, literature, speaking or a particular exam), the class and board, the area, preferred days and times, home or online, and a budget. Home requests are offered to the nearest tutors first: tutors in that locality, then those who travel to it, then the zone and the city, with online tutors next. Two or three are shortlisted and the family picks one for the demo.

Your fee per class appears on your profile, and parents see it before the demo. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Presenting yourself as an English tutor

Separate the strands you teach. Early reading and phonics is a different skill from ISC literature, and spoken English for confidence is different from IGCSE coursework feedback. Name the boards and papers you know, such as CBSE Class 10, ICSE Paper 1 and 2, ISC, IGCSE 0500 or 0510, or IB Language A, and the age range you enjoy teaching. Add your travel areas, your free hours and whether you teach online.

After joining, tutors pass through an ID check before the profile is marked Verified: a one-time code to confirm phone or email, and a government photo ID that our team reviews. The resulting Verified badge confirms who you are; it does not grade teaching and is not a police or background check. Read How we verify tutors for each step. Joining is free, and the Free plan includes 160 lead credits a month; paid plans on /pricing are optional extras, never a fee to apply for a tuition.

English at home or online

Learning to read, up to about Class 2, belongs at home: you need to see the child's finger on the page and hear every word. From Class 3 to 8 either mode works if the child writes on paper and shows it to the camera or types in a shared document. Board classes, ISC, IGCSE and IB suit online or hybrid teaching, because timed writing and marking work well on shared documents and a board specialist may live far away.

NXTutors has no built-in classroom, so you and the family agree the video tool and how writing will be handed in, whether a shared document, photos of the notebook or a writing tablet, before the first class. Send class links to a number or group the parent can see, and make sure feedback reaches the student before the next session.

Women tutors welcome

For women tutors: you set the terms

A parent who would prefer a woman tutor for English, perhaps for a young reader or a daughter, can ask for one, and NXTutors respects that as the family's choice. Women English tutors decide how they work: lessons in the family's home, online, or a mix, in the localities and at the hours they choose. Every tutor who joins goes through an ID check before the profile is marked Verified, and the first lesson with any family is a demo where we ask a parent to be present.

  • Home, online or hybrid: English lessons adapt well to all three.
  • Only the localities you list are used for home requests.
  • Your hours are yours; parents see them before the demo.
  • The demo happens where we ask a parent to be at home or watching online.
  • Share reading lists and feedback through the parent's phone or a family group.
  • Ask to be added to the gate register or visitor app in a gated society.
  • Stop any classes that concern you and tell us; /safeguarding-policy has the full rules.

Read the safeguarding policy and how the ID check works.

Why tutors choose NXTutors

What is different from a directory listing or a tuition bureau.

  • You set your fee

Your fee per class is on your profile, and families see it before the demo, so there is no haggling after a good class.

  • Matched, nearest first

Each request goes to two or three tutors who fit it, nearest first, not to a long list of people chasing the same family.

  • Demo first

The first class is a free demo. Families decide after meeting you, not from a phone call or a price list.

  • No made-up leads

We never show invented requests. The only request details on these pages are real and anonymised, and only once there are three or more.

  • An ID check for everyone

Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. Real tutors who pass carry the Verified badge; sample profiles are always labelled.

  • AI-first, with real teachers

Parents can ask NXT AI about your profile and compare tutors side by side. The teaching is always yours.

Tutor plans and what each includes

Tutor plans are listed on our pricing page with what each one includes. Read them before you apply; we do not quote prices on this page. Tutors are independent: you set your own fee, and families pay you for the classes they take.

Questions from tutors

Can I teach only early reading and phonics?

Yes. Early reading is a specialist skill and a profile that says so clearly is matched to requests for young children, not to board-year literature. List the classes you take, and add primary English or phonics in your subjects so parents of five to seven year olds can find you.

Do I need to know every board's English paper?

No. Teach the boards you know and name them on your profile. Requests are matched on board as well as class, so an ICSE specialist is not sent IGCSE coursework requests unless the profile says IGCSE. Learn the current paper for any board you add.

Can I teach English online to students across India?

Yes. Choose online or both. Online requests are matched on subject, board and class rather than your city. Agree with each family how written work will reach you, such as a shared document or photos of the notebook, before the first lesson.

What does a parent see before booking a demo with me?

Your profile, including the classes, boards and subjects you teach, your areas and your fee per class. Parents see the fee before the demo, which is free for them, and they choose one of the two or three shortlisted tutors to try.

What is checked when I join?

Your identity. You confirm your phone or email with a one-time code and upload a government photo ID that our team reviews before your profile is marked Verified. It is not a police check. How we verify tutors explains the process.

How much does it cost an English tutor to join?

Joining NXTutors and setting up your profile are free. The Free plan includes 160 lead credits a month, which you spend to unlock the family requests you want to answer. Paid plans (/pricing) are optional and add visibility, AI tools and more credits; none is a fee to apply for a tuition. The fee you charge families is your own decision and is shown to parents before the demo, separate from the plan you choose.
