English tutor jobs in Agra

Would an Agra family hire you to teach English if most of your strength is grammar and translation rather than literature? Quite possibly, and that is what makes English tuition here different from many cities. A UP Board student faces a question that CBSE does not set: turning Hindi sentences into English. Add CBSE and ICSE students, with their long literature answers and compositions, and young children who are still learning to read, and 'English tutor' covers several distinct jobs. Families tend to say which one they need.

Who asks for english tutors in Agra

Grammar and translation are the pressure point for UP Board Class 10. The 2026-27 High School paper is 70 marks with 30 internal: reading 10, writing 10, grammar 15 including 4 marks for translating four Hindi sentences into English, and literature 35, of which First Flight carries 23 (prose 15, poetry 8) and Footprints Without Feet 12. On the day, Part A is twenty one-mark multiple-choice questions on an OMR sheet, where cutting and erasing are not allowed, followed by 50 descriptive marks. Grammar and translation together are worth more than reading and writing combined, so families want weekly time on both. The Intermediate paper in Class 12 is a single 100-mark paper: reading 15, writing 20 (an article of about 150 words and a letter to the editor, a complaint or a business letter), grammar 25 with translation of seven or eight Hindi sentences, and literature 40 from Flamingo and Vistas, with figures of speech asked in the poetry section. Schools also hold four unit tests for remedial teaching that do not count in the result, which give a tutor a useful check.

CBSE Class 10 reads the same two NCERT storybooks, but literature is 40 of the 80 board marks, reading 20 from a discursive and a case-based passage, and writing 10 from a formal letter and an analytical paragraph on a chart, map or graph. The school adds 20 internal marks, including listening and speaking. In Classes 11 and 12, CBSE English Core students often coast after a good Class 10 and then lose marks on precise reading and writing formats.

ICSE and ISC bring the longest writing in the city. ICSE examines English Language and Literature in English as separate 80-mark papers, the language paper asking for a 300 to 350 word composition, a letter, a notice with an e-mail, an unseen passage with a summary and grammar. ISC Paper 1 asks for a 400 to 450 word composition from six types, directed writing and a proposal. Tutors for these courses are fewer, so online specialists are often used. Agra also has steady requests for spoken English and for young readers in Classes 1 to 5, especially where little English is spoken at home.

Where in Agra the work is

Because English lessons rarely need materials beyond books and a notebook, they suit a compact round. North Agra's Kamla Nagar blocks, Balkeshwar Colony and Dayal Bagh form one such round; ask for the block and section in Kamla Nagar, and avoid the evening market hours. In West Agra, Sikandra, the Avas Vikas Colony sectors, Shastripuram, Bodla and Lohamandi are mostly houses with their own door, and the sector number matters more than the colony name.

Central Agra and Cantt has more apartment buildings, where you give your name to a guard, and cantonment homes near Sadar Bazaar may check visitors; office traffic near Sanjay Place makes early evening workable. South Agra, around Tajganj, Fatehabad Road and Rajpur Chungi, is served by the Yellow Line metro section, though Tajganj's narrow lanes call for a two-wheeler. On the east bank, a tutor in Trans Yamuna Colony, Kalindi Vihar or Rambagh avoids the slow bridge approaches entirely. English also works well online, which covers students across the river or in other cities.

What families in Agra expect

  • A structured method for Hindi-to-English translation: find the tense, rebuild in subject-verb-object order, then fix articles and prepositions.
  • Grammar practised from the child's own sentences as well as worksheets.
  • Literature answers planned in points, kept to the word limit and grounded in the text.
  • Writing formats taught once and then practised: letters, articles, notices and, for CBSE, analytical paragraphs.
  • For UP Board students, OMR-style practice for the objective part.
  • For ICSE and ISC, regular long compositions marked with clear comments.
  • Patience with young readers: phonics, reading aloud and retelling.
  • Speaking practice for students who understand English but avoid using it.

How to get picked

Agra parents choose English tutors partly on the skill they can see. On your profile, after the boards and classes, write one line on what you fix: 'UP Board translation and grammar', 'ICSE compositions', or 'reading for Classes 1 to 4'. Say whether you explain in Hindi as well as English. Keep your localities to the colonies you can reach every week, and turn on online lessons if you are happy to teach families across the Yamuna that way.

At the free demo, give the student four short Hindi sentences to translate, one literature question and a two-minute chat in English. That shows the parent your method on the three things they worry about most. Finish by saying which skill you would work on first and how you would track it, for instance one translation set and one letter a week, marked and returned. The demo is the only time a parent sees you teach before deciding, so make the progress plan concrete.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

What is the translation question in UP Board English?

In Class 10 it is worth 4 marks and asks the student to translate four Hindi sentences into English; in Class 12 it grows to seven or eight sentences for 5 marks within the grammar section. It rewards a tutor who teaches sentence structure rather than word-by-word translation.

Do Agra families want English tutors who also speak Hindi?

Many do, especially for UP Board students and children moving from Hindi-medium schools into English-medium classes. Explaining a point in Hindi and then practising it in English is common. State the languages you can teach in on your profile.

How is CBSE Class 10 English different from the UP Board paper?

Both use First Flight and Footprints Without Feet, but CBSE gives literature 40 of 80 marks and asks for an analytical paragraph on a chart or graph, while the UP Board paper weights grammar and translation more heavily and opens with an OMR section.

Is there demand for ICSE and ISC English in Agra?

These students are fewer than UP Board and CBSE students, and tutors for them are fewer too, so families often look online. If you have taught ICSE or ISC compositions, name the courses clearly.

Can I teach spoken English as part of tuition?

Yes. CBSE, ICSE and ISC set aside marks for listening and speaking, and a retelling at the end of each lesson builds confidence. Mention it if you offer conversation practice or interview preparation.

What does it cost to join as an English tutor in Agra?

Nothing. Joining is free, the Free plan gives monthly lead credits, and paid plans are optional. You set your own fee; the section below explains earnings.
