Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

English home tutor in Agra: same storybooks, different papers, and a translation question many tutors overlook

In Class 10, UP Board and CBSE students in Agra read the same NCERT English storybooks, yet the two board papers reward different things. A UP Board student also faces a question CBSE does not set: turning Hindi sentences into English. Add ICSE and ISC with their long compositions, and young children who are still learning to read, and "an English tutor" can mean very different people. NXTutors asks for the board, the class, the skill that worries you and your colony, then sends two or three English tutors who fit, with fees shown. The first class with the one you pick is a free demo.

Class 10 English on the UP Board and CBSE: what is the same and what is not?

Both boards set literature from First Flight and Footprints Without Feet. The way marks are spread around those books is where they part company:

Class 10 English, 2026-27: the UP Board High School paper beside CBSE English Language and Literature
PartUP Board High School (70 + 30 internal)CBSE (80 + 20 internal)
Reading1020, from two passages: one discursive, one factual and case-based with a chart or data
Writing1010: a formal letter and an analytical paragraph, 5 each
Grammar15, including 4 marks for translating four Hindi sentences into English10
Literature35: First Flight 23 (prose 15, poetry 8), Footprints Without Feet 1240 across the same two books
On the dayPart A of twenty one-mark MCQs on an OMR sheet, then 50 descriptive marksSections set by the CBSE sample paper

Two lessons follow. For a UP Board student, grammar and translation together are worth more than reading and writing combined, so they deserve weekly time, and the OMR section needs practice on a real answer sheet layout, since cutting and erasing are not allowed there. For a CBSE student, literature is half the paper: a pair of literature answers each week, written to the word limit and checked against the text, does more than another grammar worksheet. The board's own site has the full UP Board scheme; our UP Board tutors in Agra page covers the other subjects.

How should a tutor teach Hindi-to-English translation?

Translation carries 4 marks in the UP Board Class 10 paper and 5 in Class 12, where it grows to seven or eight sentences. It is easy marks for a prepared student and a trap for one who translates word by word. A tutor should work through it as a skill, not a list of answers:

  1. Find the tense first. Many errors come from a Hindi verb form mapped onto the wrong English tense.
  2. Subject, verb, object. Rebuild the sentence in English order before choosing words.
  3. Small words matter. Hindi has no articles and puts its little linking words after the noun, so articles and prepositions need their own drill.
  4. Read it back. The finished sentence should sound natural in English, not like Hindi in English words.

The same routine helps any student moving from a Hindi-medium school into English-medium books, whatever the board: a short Hindi paragraph turned into English each week shows exactly where sentence structure breaks.

What does UP Board Class 12 English ask?

The Intermediate paper is a single 100-mark paper. Reading carries 15 and writing 20, the writing being an article of about 150 words and a letter to the editor, a complaint or a business letter. Grammar is worth 25, translation included, and literature 40, drawn from Flamingo and Vistas, with figures of speech asked in the poetry section. Schools also hold four unit tests during the year for remedial teaching; their marks do not count in the final result, but they are a useful check on whether tuition is working. A tutor should keep a list of the figures of speech with one example from the textbook poems for each, and set one letter or article a fortnight to be written in full.

CBSE English Core in Classes 11 and 12

CBSE English Core in Class 11 splits its marks as reading 26, literature 31 (the Hornbill and Snapshots readers) and grammar with creative writing 23. By Class 12 grammar has left the paper and literature has grown. The board paper is 80, with 20 for listening, speaking and a project. Students who did well in Class 10 often coast here and lose marks on precise reading questions and on writing formats, so a monthly timed reading section is worth the time. The national English home tutor guide covers the course in more depth.

ICSE, ISC, IGCSE and IB English

ICSE Class 10
Language and literature are separate 80-mark papers with 20 internal marks each. The language paper covers a 300-to-350-word composition, a letter, a notice with an e-mail, an unseen passage and its summary, and grammar. Our ICSE Class 10 English papers guide goes section by section.
ISC Class 12
Two papers, each three hours and 80 marks, with 20 project marks on each. Paper 1 asks for a 400-to-450-word composition (six types to choose from), directed writing and a proposal; Paper 2 is literature across drama, prose and poetry. See the ISC Class 12 English guide.
Cambridge IGCSE; IB
Confirm whether your child is entered for First Language English (0500) or Second Language (0510 or 0511). IB Language A is built on unseen analysis, a comparative essay and an individual oral.

Tutors for these courses are fewer, so an online specialist is often the practical answer; name the course in your first message.

Can a home tutor build spoken English too?

It can, and the work overlaps with the board: CBSE, ICSE and ISC each set aside marks for listening and speaking. A simple routine is to close every lesson by having your child retell the passage in their own words, then move over the months to opinions defended aloud, short role-plays and answering follow-up questions without notes. Tell us if confidence for interviews or college admission matters to you as much as marks; that changes the kind of tutor we shortlist. The spoken English guide for students has more ideas.

What about children in Classes 1 to 5?

At this age, English tuition is about learning to read with ease. Signs that help is needed include guessing at unfamiliar words, losing the line, or reading aloud without being able to say what happened. Short, frequent practice works: blending sounds into words, a page read aloud each day with gentle correction, and the child retelling the story afterwards. Where little English is spoken at home, a tutor who chats about pictures and stories in easy English, slipping into Hindi only to unblock a word, grows listening alongside reading. These years need a primary specialist, not a board-exam tutor, so say the class clearly in your request.

Six Agra colonies: planning the English lesson around the route

Most tutors travel by two-wheeler, auto or car, so a tutor from your side of the city is usually the one who keeps the slot steady. The Agra home tuition page covers every locality.

North: Kamla Nagar and Balkeshwar Colony

Kamla Nagar's Blocks A to F hold houses, flats and plots, with markets that fill in the evening, so an early slot works. Balkeshwar sits next door, reached along Balkeshwar Road; house numbers can be hard to follow in the inner lanes, so give the market or nearest crossing. One tutor can often cover both on the same evening.

West: Avas Vikas Colony, Bodla and Lohamandi

In Avas Vikas Colony, give the sector with the house number. Bodla is mostly independent houses, with cabs and autos easy to find; avoid the evening rush at Bodla crossing. Lohamandi's narrow lanes suit a tutor on a two-wheeler, and a shop or crossing makes the clearest landmark.

Centre: Civil Lines

Mostly ready apartments beside the Sanjay Place business district, easy to reach from almost any side. Tell the guard the tutor's name, and choose an early-evening time, since office and market traffic peaks in the late afternoon.

From around Class 3, online English is workable as long as the tutor sees the written work before each lesson, sent as notebook photos or a shared file; it also brings ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists within reach. A tutor in the room still suits early readers and anyone in the first months of a move from Hindi to English medium. The home tutor or online tutor article weighs it up.

How to judge an English tutor in one demo

  • Starting point: the tutor asks to see a recent school test or notebook before teaching anything.
  • Language: your child follows the explanation, and more of the lesson is in English by the end than at the start.
  • Your child's output: a written paragraph or a spoken answer of some length, not only listening.
  • Board knowledge: the tutor can describe your paper, including the translation question if your child is on the UP Board.
  • Follow-up: homework that the tutor will correct, and an outline of the coming month.

If the demo falls short, tell us; another shortlisted tutor takes the next demo, and switching later is free. The demo class checklist has more.

What does an English home tutor in Agra cost?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fees, which follow the class, the board, the tutor's experience with that paper, the trip to your colony and how often you meet. Each fee is on the shortlist before the demo; the Agra home tuition fees article explains more.

What to send us

Tell us your child's class and board, which part of English is the worry (reading, writing, grammar, translation, literature or speaking), whether they think more easily in Hindi or English, your colony and a nearby landmark, the times you can offer, and your budget. Two or three matched tutors come back with their fees. Tutors who join go through an ID check. For other subjects, see the maths and science tutor pages for Agra and the Agra home tuition guide. English Home Tutor in Agra: common questions

How do we find an English tutor for our child's board and class in Agra?

To find an English tutor in Agra, tell NXTutors the class and board, the part of English that worries you, and your colony with a landmark. Say whether your child thinks more easily in Hindi or English. We send two or three matched tutors, each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and switching later is free.

What hourly fee do Agra English tutors quote for board-year or primary reading lessons?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. English tutors in Agra set their own fees, which follow the class, the board, the trip to your colony and how often you meet. Each fee is on the shortlist before the demo.

How are marks split in the UP Board Class 10 English paper?

UP Board Class 10 English in Agra is a 70-mark paper with 30 internal marks for 2026-27. Reading and writing carry 10 each, grammar 15 including a 4-mark translation of four Hindi sentences, and literature 35 from First Flight and Footprints Without Feet. Part A has twenty one-mark questions on an OMR sheet.

How should a tutor teach the Hindi-to-English translation question?

An Agra English tutor should teach UP Board translation as a skill: find the tense first, rebuild the sentence in English order, drill articles and prepositions, then read it back. It is 4 marks for four sentences in Class 10 and 5 marks for seven or eight sentences in Class 12, easy for a prepared student and a trap for word-by-word translators.

Is the UP Board English paper the same as CBSE if both use First Flight?

No; Agra students on the UP Board and CBSE read the same Class 10 books but sit different papers. The UP Board sets 70 marks with translation and an OMR section, while CBSE sets 80 marks with literature worth 40 and 20 marks for reading from two passages. Practice should follow your own board's paper.

What does the UP Board Class 12 English paper ask for?

UP Board Class 12 English for Agra students is a single 100-mark paper: reading 15, writing 20, grammar 25 including translation, and literature 40 from Flamingo and Vistas. The writing is an article of about 150 words plus a letter. A tutor should keep a list of figures of speech with a textbook example for each.

Can you find ICSE or ISC English tutors in Agra?

We look for ICSE and ISC English tutors in Agra on every such request, though they are fewer than CBSE or UP Board tutors. ISC sets two 80-mark papers, including a 400-to-450-word composition and a separate literature paper, so the tutor must know your exam year's set texts. An online specialist can fill the gap.

Can English lessons at home in Agra also build spoken English for interviews?

Yes, an English tutor in Agra can build spoken confidence by ending each lesson with a retelling, then moving to opinions defended aloud, role-plays and follow-up questions without notes. This also helps with the listening and speaking marks in CBSE, ICSE and ISC. If speaking matters as much as marks, say so, as it changes who we shortlist.

My child in Class 2 struggles to read English. What kind of tutor helps?

A primary specialist, not a board-exam tutor, suits a Class 1 to 5 child in Agra who guesses at words or reads without following the story. Short, frequent practice works: blending sounds, a page read aloud daily with gentle correction, and retelling afterwards. Where little English is spoken at home, easy chat about pictures builds listening too.

How does a tutor find a house in Balkeshwar Colony or Lohamandi?

An English tutor finds a house in Balkeshwar Colony or Lohamandi in Agra most easily with a landmark. In Balkeshwar's inner lanes, house numbers can be hard to follow, so share the market or nearest crossing. Lohamandi's lanes are narrow and suit a tutor on a two-wheeler, with a shop or crossing as the meeting point.

From which class does online English tuition work for an Agra child?

Online English tuition works for an Agra child from about Class 3, if written work reaches the tutor before each lesson as notebook photos or a shared file. It also brings ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists within reach. For early readers, and students in their first months of moving from Hindi to English medium, a tutor at the table works better.
