What does the UP Board Class 12 chemistry paper look like?

The board's 2026-27 syllabus describes a 70-mark paper built from seven questions. The first is a block of six one-mark multiple-choice items; the rest climb through two-, three-, four- and five-mark questions. At least 8 marks must come from numerical questions, so solutions, electrochemistry and kinetics problems cannot be skipped by a student who prefers theory.

Two habits pay on this paper. First, each answer should carry the paper's own question and part number, so the examiner never has to search for it. Second, every numerical should show the formula, the substitution and the unit, because a correct final figure alone earns little. Many UP Board students in Agra study in Hindi, and chemistry terms such as upachayan (oxidation) and apachayan (reduction) must be secure in the language of the answer sheet.

The board's website also carries model papers and a monthly syllabus. A tutor can use the monthly syllabus to stay level with the school and the model paper to set one full timed paper a month from the second term, marked question by question so the student sees exactly where the seven-question layout costs marks. Numericals, equations and named reactions should be practised in the same medium every time, because switching between Hindi and English terms at the last moment is a common source of slips. How are CBSE Class 12 chemistry marks spread across chapters?

CBSE fixes chemistry marks chapter by chapter, and the 2026-27 paper keeps last session's design. Grouped by branch, the ten theory chapters look like this:

The paper runs three hours across five lettered sections, a few questions offer an internal choice, and no calculator or log table is allowed. Roughly two-fifths of the marks check recall and understanding; the rest ask the student to apply, analyse or evaluate. Which topics have left the CBSE paper, and which still matter for entrance exams?

Two areas are gone from Class 12 entirely in 2026-27: the solid state, and the p-block from Group 15 to Group 18. Four more stay in the course but are marked only by the school: surface chemistry, polymers, how elements are isolated, and chemistry in everyday life. Students also preparing for NEET or JEE should not cross these off on the board's word alone: NTA publishes the entrance syllabus separately, and parts the board has dropped can still be examined there. What should each branch get in a weekly home session?

Close each session with two "give reasons" questions written out and corrected before the tutor leaves. How much of the CBSE practical can be prepared at home?

More than families expect. Of the 30 marks, titration and salt analysis carry 8 each, a theory-based experiment 6, the project 4, and the record with the viva 4. The titration this session pits potassium permanganate against either oxalic acid or Mohr's salt, and each student weighs and makes up the standard solution personally. A tutor at home can rehearse the molarity working for the weighed sample, a clean table of burette readings, the logic of salt analysis from preliminary to confirmatory tests, a project the student can really manage, and likely viva questions, for instance why permanganate needs no added indicator. ISC, IB or IGCSE chemistry: what to ask for

• ISC: alongside theory, CISCE assesses practical and project work, and it expects explanations fuller than a one-line definition.
• IB Diploma: SL or HL, organised under two themes, structure and reactivity. The scientific investigation has to be the student's own; a tutor can question the student about it but cannot shape it.
• Cambridge IGCSE: papers come in Core and Extended tiers, and the comparison of Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE sets out how the boards differ.
