NEET chemistry home tutor: how to turn 45 questions into your safest marks

In NEET, chemistry is the section where preparation shows most clearly in the score. Biology carries more marks and physics is feared more, but chemistry is where a well-prepared student can be both fast and accurate, and where a poorly prepared one loses marks to negative marking without noticing. This guide explains the NEET chemistry pattern and syllabus as the National Testing Agency and the National Medical Commission set them, how each branch should be prepared, how to handle the multiple-choice format, and how a home tutor fits alongside a coaching programme.

The NEET chemistry pattern

According to the NTA's NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin, the paper has 180 compulsory multiple-choice questions to be answered in 180 minutes, each with four options and a single correct or most appropriate answer.

SubjectQuestionsMarks
Physics45180
Chemistry45180
Biology (Botany and Zoology)90360
Total180720

Each correct answer earns four marks, each wrong answer loses one, and an unanswered question scores zero. The bulletin also uses chemistry as the second tie-breaker after biology when candidates have equal scores, one more reason not to treat it as a filler section.

Two numbers are worth keeping in mind. With 180 questions in 180 minutes, the average is one minute a question across the whole paper. Chemistry, done well, should take less than that, leaving time for physics numericals. And every careless wrong answer costs five marks relative to a correct one, which is why accuracy matters as much as knowledge.

The NEET chemistry syllabus

The syllabus is notified by the National Medical Commission, and the NTA's 2026 bulletin confirms it was unchanged from the previous year. It has twenty units drawn from Class 11 and 12 chemistry, which fall naturally into the three branches:

BranchUnits in the NEET syllabus
Physical chemistrySome Basic Concepts in Chemistry; Atomic Structure; Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure; Chemical Thermodynamics; Solutions; Equilibrium; Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry; Chemical Kinetics
Inorganic chemistryClassification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties; p-Block Elements; d- and f-Block Elements; Coordination Compounds
Organic chemistryPurification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds; Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry; Hydrocarbons; Organic Compounds Containing Halogens; Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen; Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen; Biomolecules; Principles Related to Practical Chemistry

Some chapters that older NEET books still include, such as states of matter, hydrogen, s-block elements, environmental chemistry, polymers and chemistry in everyday life, are not in the current unit list. A tutor should use the NMC syllabus, not an old question bank, to decide what to teach.

Note one mismatch with CBSE. The p-block elements are a full NEET unit, but in the CBSE 2026-27 curriculum the s- and p-block elements are assessed only in school, not in the board theory paper. A student preparing only for the board can easily under-prepare p-block. The "Principles Related to Practical Chemistry" unit is another one that board students often skim: it covers detection of elements, functional-group tests, salt analysis and titration chemistry, all of which appear as NEET questions.

For a chapter-level view of which topics carry the most questions, see our article on important NEET chemistry chapters.

Inorganic chemistry: NCERT, line by line

NEET inorganic questions track the NCERT textbooks very closely, often down to a single sentence, a table of values or an exception mentioned in passing. The approach that works is disciplined rather than clever:

  • Read NCERT actively, not once. A tutor reads each inorganic chapter with the student, underlining facts that make good questions: oxidation states, colours, exceptions to trends, structures of oxoacids and interhalogens.
  • Turn tables into quizzes. Ionisation enthalpies, electronic configurations of transition metals, colours of ions and magnetic moments are learned faster as rapid-fire questions than by re-reading.
  • Explain the trend, then learn the exception. Why the inert pair effect makes lower oxidation states more stable down group 13 and 14; why lanthanoid contraction makes zirconium and hafnium so alike. Understood exceptions are remembered.
  • Revise on a cycle. Inorganic fades fastest of the three branches. A short inorganic quiz in every session, covering a different chapter each time, keeps it all current.

Coordination compounds sit between inorganic and physical chemistry: nomenclature, isomerism, valence bond and crystal field theory, and magnetic moments. It rewards students who are fluent with Class 11 hybridisation.

Organic chemistry: mechanisms before memory

NEET organic questions are rarely "what is the product of this named reaction" alone. They combine steps, ask which reagent achieves a conversion, compare acidity or basicity, or test reaction intermediates. Students who memorised reactions without the reasoning struggle with this format.

General organic chemistry first

Inductive effect, resonance, hyperconjugation, and the stability of carbocations, carbanions and radicals. These explain acidity of phenols and carboxylic acids, basicity of amines and the direction of most reactions. A tutor should revisit them until the student can rank any set of intermediates in seconds.

Reactions as families

Nucleophilic substitution, elimination, electrophilic addition and substitution, and nucleophilic addition to carbonyls. Named reactions then slot into these families rather than standing alone, which makes them far easier to recall under time pressure.

Reagent recognition

Many NEET questions hinge on knowing exactly what a reagent does: which reduces a carbonyl fully, which stops at an aldehyde, which gives anti-Markovnikov addition. A reagent sheet, built and quizzed regularly, is one of the most useful things a tutor can make with a student.

Isomerism, IUPAC nomenclature and biomolecules are reliable questions that are mostly recall; they should be revised with the inorganic cycle rather than left to the last month.

Physical chemistry: fast, accurate numericals

NEET physical chemistry numericals are usually short, one or two steps, but they must be solved without a calculator and quickly. The skills a tutor should build:

  • Mole concept fluency. Stoichiometry, limiting reagent, molarity and molality conversions without hesitation. This underpins solutions, equilibrium and electrochemistry.
  • Mental arithmetic and approximation. Handling powers of ten, logarithms of common numbers and rough division so that the right option can be picked without full working.
  • Formula selection. Knowing instantly which relation applies: first-order half-life, the Nernst equation, the relationship between Kp and Kc, ΔG and K.
  • Graph reading. Rate plots for different orders, molar conductivity against concentration, and vapour pressure curves for ideal and non-ideal solutions.
  • Theory questions in physical chemistry. Not every question here is a numerical. Bonding, atomic structure and thermodynamics sign conventions produce many conceptual questions.

Timed sets of fifteen or twenty physical chemistry questions, done in a session and reviewed immediately, build speed faster than anything else. If physics numericals are also a worry, see our guide to a NEET physics tutor and the article on high-yield NEET physics.

MCQ strategy and negative marking

Knowing chemistry and scoring in NEET chemistry are not the same thing. A tutor should teach the format explicitly:

  • Attempt chemistry in a planned order. Many students do quick recall questions first, then organic, then numericals, so easy marks are banked early. The order matters less than having one and practising it.
  • Eliminate before choosing. In statement-based and "which is incorrect" questions, crossing out options one by one prevents the most common slip, which is answering the opposite of what was asked.
  • Think about guessing. With +4 for a right answer and −1 for a wrong one, a blind guess is a poor bet, but a guess between two remaining options is usually worth taking. Students should decide this rule before the exam, not in the hall.
  • Analyse every test. After each mock, sort mistakes into "did not know", "knew but slipped" and "ran out of time". Each needs a different fix, and a tutor is well placed to do this analysis with the student.

Common NEET chemistry traps

Across mock tests, the same errors cost NEET students chemistry marks again and again. Most can be fixed in a few weeks once they are named:

  • Reading "incorrect" as "correct". Statement questions often ask which option is wrong. Circling the key word before reading the options stops this.
  • Unit slips in numericals. Millilitres left unconverted, kJ and J mixed, or the wrong gas constant chosen. The distractor options are often built from exactly these slips.
  • Half-remembered exceptions. Knowing that there is an exception to a trend but not which way it goes. Exceptions need to be learned with their reason.
  • Over-thinking inorganic. Reasoning past what NCERT actually says. When the textbook states a fact, that is usually the answer NEET is looking for.
  • Spending too long on one question. A stubborn numerical should be marked and left, not fought for four minutes.
  • Neglecting practical chemistry. Salt analysis, functional-group tests and titration questions are straightforward marks that under-prepared students give away.

A weekly routine with a NEET chemistry tutor

For a student attending coaching and seeing a chemistry tutor twice a week, a routine like this keeps all three branches in play without overloading the week:

WhenFocus
Session oneDoubts saved from coaching during the week; a rapid NCERT inorganic quiz; one organic mechanism or reagent set
Session twoA timed set of 20 to 30 mixed chemistry questions, then immediate review of every error
Between sessionsNCERT reading of the week's inorganic chapter; the student logs every wrong question in an error notebook
Once a monthA full chemistry section under exam timing, followed by a longer analysis session

The error notebook matters more than it looks. By the final months it becomes the most valuable revision document the student has, because it contains exactly the mistakes that student tends to make.

How a home tutor works alongside coaching

Most NEET aspirants already attend a coaching programme. A home tutor does not replace it and should not repeat it. The useful roles are:

  • Doubt clearing. Coaching classes move on whether or not a student understood. A weekly session to work through saved doubts stops gaps from piling up.
  • Catch-up. After an illness or a module that did not land, a tutor can rebuild the chapter quickly and one-to-one.
  • Test analysis. Going through coaching test papers mistake by mistake, and setting targeted practice from them.
  • Board balance. For Class 12 students, making sure CBSE-specific requirements such as practicals and descriptive answers are not neglected. Our Class 12 chemistry guide covers the board side.

The tutor should follow the coaching sequence and see the coaching material, so that the student is not taught two different methods for the same problem.

NEET chemistry timelines: Class 11, Class 12 and repeat year

Starting pointWhat the tutor should prioritise
Start of Class 11Deep foundations: mole concept, atomic structure, bonding, general organic chemistry. Build the NCERT inorganic habit from the first chapter. See our Class 11 chemistry guide
Start of Class 12Close Class 11 gaps in the first two months while keeping pace with Class 12; begin mixed timed practice by the second half of the year
After the boardsThe weeks between board exams and NEET are for full-length chemistry sections, NCERT inorganic revision and error analysis, not new material
Repeat (drop) yearStart with a detailed analysis of the previous attempt. Rebuild the weakest branch properly before starting heavy mock tests

Biology carries half the paper and should not be crowded out by chemistry; our note on NCERT-first NEET biology covers that side.

Choosing a NEET chemistry tutor

In the free demo class, check that the tutor:

  • Knows the current NMC syllabus and can say which chapters are no longer examined.
  • Teaches inorganic from NCERT itself, not only from notes, and can point to where in the book a fact comes from.
  • Solves NEET-style questions at speed and can show the shortcut as well as the full method.
  • Asks about the coaching programme and plans around it.
  • Talks about accuracy, not just coverage, and has a method for analysing test mistakes.

Our main guide to a chemistry home tutor has a fuller demo checklist.

Fees, frequency and getting started

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. The fee depends on the tutor's entrance-exam experience, home or online sessions, travel in your area and the number of sessions a week. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo; our pricing guide explains the factors.

Alongside full-time coaching, one or two sessions a week focused on doubts and tests is usually enough. Without coaching, or in a repeat year, three sessions a week gives room to teach and test. Online sessions suit NEET students well because they fit around coaching timings and widen the choice of experienced tutors.

How many chemistry questions and marks does NEET (UG) 2026 have?

According to the NTA's NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin, chemistry has 45 compulsory multiple-choice questions worth 180 marks, of 180 questions and 720 marks across India. Each correct answer earns four marks, each wrong one loses one, and blanks score zero. Chemistry is also the second tie-breaker after biology.

Which chapters are no longer in the NEET chemistry syllabus?

The current NMC syllabus for NEET chemistry, unchanged for 2026, leaves out states of matter, hydrogen, s-block elements, environmental chemistry, polymers and chemistry in everyday life. Older NEET books across India still include them. A tutor should teach from the twenty-unit NMC list, not an old question bank.

Why do CBSE students in India often under-prepare p-block and practical chemistry for NEET?

CBSE students preparing for NEET often under-prepare p-block because CBSE 2026-27 assesses s- and p-block only in school, while NEET has a full p-block unit. Principles Related to Practical Chemistry is also skimmed, though it covers element detection, functional-group tests, salt analysis and titration chemistry.

Is NCERT enough for NEET chemistry preparation?

For NEET inorganic chemistry, NCERT read line by line is the core, because questions track the textbook closely, often down to one sentence or exception. Physical and organic chemistry need NCERT plus plenty of timed practice. Students across India should also check the current NMC syllabus.

How should a NEET aspirant prepare organic chemistry?

A NEET aspirant should prepare organic chemistry mechanisms before memory, starting with inductive effect, resonance, hyperconjugation and intermediate stability. Reactions then fit into families such as substitution, elimination and addition. A reagent sheet, built and quizzed regularly, helps with the many questions that hinge on what a reagent does.

How should negative marking shape a NEET chemistry strategy?

Negative marking should make a NEET chemistry student across India plan for accuracy, not only coverage. With +4 for right and −1 for wrong, a blind guess is a poor bet, but a guess between two remaining options is usually worth it. Decide the rule before the exam, eliminate options one by one, and sort mock mistakes by cause.

Do I need a NEET chemistry home tutor if I already attend coaching?

Not always, but many NEET aspirants in India gain from one or two sessions a week beside coaching for doubts, catch-up and coaching-test analysis. The tutor should follow the coaching sequence and see its material, so the student is not taught two methods for the same problem.

Is online tuition effective for NEET chemistry?

Yes, online NEET chemistry tuition works well across India, because sessions fit around coaching, save travel and widen the choice of experienced tutors. The tutor must see the student's working through a tablet or notebook camera. Some families prefer a home session for supervised timed tests.

Can I ask for a woman tutor for NEET chemistry?

Yes, you can ask for a woman tutor for NEET chemistry, and we shortlist women tutors where available. Mention it when you share your requirement. Being flexible on timing or open to online sessions across India increases the number of good options to choose from at the free demo.
