Which chemistry exams is your child really sitting?

A Class 12 student can carry three chemistry targets at once. Before the first lesson, list them, because each is built differently:

• CBSE Class 12 (043). A three-hour theory paper out of 70 with 33 compulsory questions, plus 30 marks for practical work. Marks follow full written reasons, correct equations and carefully set-out calculations.
• NEET (UG), as in 2026. Of 180 pen-and-paper questions, chemistry supplied 45, carrying 180 marks out of 720. Precise recall of NCERT statements is what pays.
• JEE Main 2026, Paper 1. Chemistry made up a third of the 75 questions: twenty with options and five asking for a numerical value. Reaction mechanisms and multi-step physical problems carry the weight.
• Chhattisgarh board Higher Secondary. Syllabus and paper are set by the board; see the section below.

In both NTA exams in 2026, a correct answer earned four marks and a wrong one lost one. NTA reissues the pattern every year, so read the newest bulletin. CBSE Class 12 chemistry chapter marks, grouped by branch

In chemistry, CBSE attaches a mark to each individual chapter, and the 2026-27 design repeats last year's. Grouping the ten chapters by branch shows where a week of tuition should go:

The paper has five lettered sections over three hours, with internal choice in a few questions. Neither calculators nor log tables are permitted. Roughly two-fifths of the marks check recall and understanding; the rest want application, analysis or evaluation. What has left the Class 12 board syllabus, and what may still turn up in NEET or JEE?

This session two whole areas have gone from the Class 12 course, namely the solid state and the p-block from Group 15 onwards. Another four stay in the classroom but only the school examines them: surface chemistry, isolation of elements from their ores, polymers, and chemistry in everyday life.

Entrance students need care here. NTA publishes its own syllabus for NEET and JEE Main, separate from CBSE, and some of what the board has dropped, parts of the p-block among them, can still be asked. How should each branch be practised at home?

If your child is in a coaching batch, the home session should follow the batch's current chapter, not race ahead of it. Its job is the slow, personal checking that a large room cannot offer.

What can be rehearsed for the 30-mark practical exam?

Sixteen of the 30 marks sit in two exercises, volumetric analysis and salt analysis, at 8 apiece. A content-based experiment earns 6, the project 4, and the file plus viva a final 4. In volumetric work this year, KMnO₄ is titrated against oxalic acid or against Mohr's salt, and candidates make up their own standard solution from a sample they weigh themselves.

Glassware never leaves the lab, yet home sessions can cover plenty: working out molarity from the mass taken, setting out titre values so the result follows cleanly, the sequence of tests that identifies a salt's ions, a project topic that is realistic to finish, and the viva favourite of why no indicator is added with permanganate.

Chemistry on the Chhattisgarh board

The Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education, with its office in Raipur, conducts the Higher Secondary examination at Class 12 and decides its own chemistry syllabus and paper. Because it can revise them, this page states no CGBSE pattern; cgbse.nic.in holds the current version. The tutor you want teaches from the prescribed book, in Hindi, English or both, to match your child's answer sheet. If NEET or JEE is also on the cards, the tutor should add NCERT-style objective practice alongside the board book.

ISC, IB and IGCSE chemistry

ISC

Besides the written theory exam, CISCE marks practical work and a project, and examiners look for explanations fuller than one textbook sentence.

IB Diploma

Offered at SL or HL, with the content arranged under two headings: structure, and reactivity. The internal scientific investigation is the student's own design; a tutor can question it but must not shape it.

Cambridge IGCSE

Cambridge sets science at two tiers, Core and Extended; how that compares with Edexcel is covered in Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE?

Fewer tutors teach these courses than teach CBSE, so ask early. When no specialist can travel to you, an online specialist can teach the course while a local tutor marks written practice.

Fixing an evening chemistry slot in six Raipur localities

Should chemistry tuition begin in Class 11?

Usually, yes. Mole calculations, equilibrium and the opening organic chapters are the foundations under Class 12: they resurface whenever a student meets colligative properties, cell potentials or a three-step conversion. Shaky foundations cost marks a year later, on the board paper and in entrance tests alike, and patching them during the board year is the expensive route.
