Science home tutor for Classes 6 to 10: a complete guide for parents

Science is the subject where many children go from enjoying school to dreading it. In Class 6 it is magnets, plants and mixing things in the kitchen; by Class 9 it is Newton's laws, the structure of the atom and cell organelles, all in the same week; by Class 10 it is a board paper that tests chemistry, biology and physics together. A good science home tutor keeps the curiosity alive while making sure the concepts, diagrams and numericals are genuinely secure. This guide explains what science tuition looks like at each stage, how CBSE and ICSE science differ, how to tell whether your child needs help, how to judge a tutor in a demo class, and what it costs.

What science looks like from Class 6 to Class 10

School science is cumulative in a way parents do not always see. The idea of particles in Class 6 becomes the atom in Class 9 and chemical bonding in Class 10. Measuring length and time in Class 6 becomes speed and acceleration in Class 9 and electric current in Class 10. A gap left open at one stage tends to reappear, larger, two years later. That is why the right kind of help changes from stage to stage.

Classes 6 to 8: curiosity and foundations

Middle-school science is broad and practical: food and nutrition, materials and their properties, light and shadows, electricity and circuits, living things and their habitats, force and pressure, and simple chemical changes. The aim of a tutor here is not to pile on extra content but to make sure the child understands why things happen and can explain it in their own words. The habits built now, reading a diagram carefully, writing a definition precisely, asking "how do we know?", are the habits that decide Class 9 and 10. One or two sessions a week is usually plenty.

Class 9: the jump

Class 9 is where most families first look for a science tutor, and for good reason. The subject suddenly becomes three subjects in one course. Physics brings topics such as motion, force and laws of motion, gravitation, work and energy, and sound, with numericals and graphs. Chemistry brings matter, atoms and molecules, and the structure of the atom, with its own vocabulary and formulas. Biology brings the cell, tissues and a lot of precise terminology and diagrams. Students who coasted through Classes 6 to 8 on memory often find that memory alone no longer works.

Class 10: the board year

Class 10 science is examined as one paper in CBSE and as three separate papers in ICSE. The content deepens (chemical reactions and equations, carbon compounds, life processes, heredity, light, electricity and magnetic effects) and the questions are increasingly competency-based: case studies, assertion and reason, data and diagrams to interpret. The work shifts from learning chapters to practising under exam conditions. We have a separate, detailed guide to Class 10 science tuition.

The single most useful thing a parent can do is start before the jump. A tutor who begins in the summer before Class 9, or in April of Class 9, has time to fix the Class 7 and 8 gaps quietly while teaching the new syllabus. A tutor who begins in the December before the Class 10 boards is working against the clock.

How a good science home tutor teaches

Science tuition is often reduced to "finishing the chapter" and "doing the back exercises". That gets homework done but rarely changes marks or confidence. The tutors we look for work in a recognisably different way.

  • Concepts before answers. Before any question is attempted, the student should be able to explain the idea in plain words: why a balloon rubbed on hair sticks to the wall, why the sky looks blue, why a plant kept in the dark turns yellow. A tutor who can get a child to explain, rather than recite, is teaching science.
  • NCERT first. For CBSE students, the NCERT textbook is the syllabus, and board papers draw closely on its wording, examples, in-text questions and activities. A good tutor works line by line through NCERT before touching any reference book or question bank, and uses NCERT Exemplar for harder practice.
  • Diagrams as a skill. Biology and physics answers lose marks for diagrams that are unlabelled, labelled wrongly or drawn without a pencil and a clear outline. The human heart, the nephron, the eye, ray diagrams for mirrors and lenses, the structure of a flower, circuit diagrams: each needs to be practised until the student can draw it neatly from memory in a couple of minutes.
  • Numericals, step by step. Physics numericals (speed, acceleration, force, work, power, resistance, lens and mirror formula) and chemistry calculations (mole concept in ICSE and in higher classes) are where marks are most often lost to careless steps and missing units. A tutor should insist on writing the formula, substituting with units and boxing the final answer, every single time.
  • Experiments at home, safely. Many NCERT activities can be done at the dining table with household materials: separating mixtures, testing indicators with turmeric or red cabbage, making a simple circuit with a cell and a bulb, watching germination, observing refraction through a glass of water. Anything involving heat, flames, strong acids or mains electricity belongs in the school lab, not at home, and a responsible tutor will say so.
  • Language of the answer. Science answers are marked against keywords. "The ball falls because of gravity" and "The Earth exerts a gravitational force on the ball which accelerates it towards the Earth's centre" earn very different marks. Tutors should model and correct the exact phrasing boards reward.
  • Regular short tests. A chapter test every two to four weeks, marked the way the board marks, shows whether understanding is improving rather than just homework getting done.

For a sense of what NCERT-first study looks like in practice, see our CBSE Class 10 science notes. For students already thinking about medicine, our guides to NCERT-first NEET Biology, important NEET Chemistry chapters and high-yield NEET Physics show how the Class 9 and 10 foundations carry forward.

Science in CBSE, ICSE and other boards

The science a child studies depends heavily on the board, and a tutor's experience with one does not automatically transfer to another. We match on board as well as class.

CBSE

CBSE teaches science as a single integrated subject from Class 6 to Class 10, using NCERT textbooks. In Classes 9 and 10 the book mixes physics, chemistry and biology chapters, and the Class 10 board paper is one science paper of 80 marks plus 20 marks of internal assessment. Papers include objective questions, assertion and reason, short and long answers, and case-based questions, so a CBSE tutor needs to train both understanding and application.

ICSE

Many ICSE schools (under CISCE) teach Physics, Chemistry and Biology as separate subjects well before Class 10, often with separate textbooks and sometimes separate teachers. At Class 10 each is examined as its own paper. ICSE science covers more content per subject than CBSE and expects precise, well-structured written answers; chemistry in particular goes further into topics like the mole concept and analytical chemistry. ICSE families often need help with the sheer volume and with planning revision across three papers.

IGCSE and IB MYP

Some families are in Cambridge IGCSE or IB Middle Years Programme schools. IGCSE science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or combined options) is examined through structured papers where command words and practical skills matter a great deal. IB MYP sciences are assessed against criteria that include inquiry, designing investigations and reflecting on the impact of science, so tutoring leans towards scientific writing and investigation skills rather than drilling. We shortlist tutors who have taught these programmes specifically.

If you are weighing a board change, or choosing science versus other streams after Class 10, our guide on how to choose a board and stream may help.

Signs your child needs a science tutor

Not every child needs tuition, and not every low mark means the child is weak at science. These are the signs that usually point to a real gap that one-to-one teaching can fix:

  • Good at reading, poor at explaining. The child can read the chapter aloud but cannot tell you in their own words why something happens. This is the classic sign of memorising without understanding.
  • Numericals avoided. The physics questions are left for last, or skipped. Often the real problem is maths (rearranging a formula, handling units or decimals), and a tutor needs to spot that.
  • Diagrams skipped or copied. Diagrams are drawn only by tracing, or left out of answers altogether.
  • Marks falling in Class 9. A drop of this kind is common and fixable, but it rarely fixes itself before Class 10.
  • Confusion between the three sciences. Terms from chemistry turn up in biology answers and vice versa, or the child cannot tell which chapter a question belongs to.
  • Homework battles every evening. If science homework has become a source of stress at home, an outside person often lowers the temperature as much as the tutoring helps.
  • A strong student who is bored. Tuition is not only for catching up. A curious child who finishes the NCERT questions in minutes may benefit from a tutor who stretches them with harder problems or olympiad-style questions.

One science tutor or separate subject specialists?

This is one of the most common questions parents ask us, and the answer depends on the class and board.

One tutor for all science

For Classes 6 to 8 in any board, and for CBSE Classes 9 and 10, one good science tutor is usually the right choice. CBSE science is a single subject with one textbook and one exam, and a tutor who sees the whole subject can plan revision across physics, chemistry and biology, and link ideas between them. It is also simpler and usually less expensive to schedule one tutor than three.

Separate specialists

For ICSE Classes 9 and 10, where Physics, Chemistry and Biology are separate papers, or for a CBSE student with one clearly weak area (often physics numericals or chemical equations), a specialist for that part can make more difference than general science tuition. Many families use one tutor for all three and bring in a specialist only for the weakest.

Maths and science together

Many parents search for a tutor for maths and science together, especially up to Class 8. This works well when the tutor is genuinely strong in both; physics and chemistry numericals depend on maths, so one person can link the two. From Class 9 we often suggest checking both subjects in the demo. See our maths home tutor guide for the maths side.

Female home tutors for maths and science

Many families, particularly those with daughters or younger children, specifically ask for a female tutor for maths and science. That is a reasonable preference and we treat it as a matching requirement, not an afterthought. When you tell us you would prefer a female tutor, we shortlist only female tutors who fit the class, board, subjects, location and timing. Availability can be tighter for certain slots and areas, so we will tell you honestly if the wait is longer, and suggest either a slightly different time or an online session with a female tutor as an alternative.

Whoever the tutor is, the same safety habits apply: sessions in a common area of the home, an adult at home during the session, and a quick word with us if anything feels wrong.

Science tuition at home or online?

Both work well for science, and the right answer depends on the child more than the subject.

  • Home tuition suits younger students, children who drift on a screen, and students who need to practise diagrams and numericals by hand while someone watches their working. A tutor sitting beside the child can see where the pencil hesitates.
  • Online tuition suits older, self-motivated students, families in areas where good science tutors are few, and students who need a specialist (ICSE Chemistry, IGCSE Physics) who may not live nearby. A good online tutor uses a digital whiteboard or a document camera so diagrams and working are still visible.
  • Hybrid is common: one home session a week for hand-written practice and the relationship, plus one online session for doubt clearing or a test.

Searching for a "science home tutor near me" makes sense for home sessions, where travel time matters. For online sessions, distance does not matter at all, which widens the choice considerably. Our guide to online and offline tutoring goes into more detail. NXTutors is based in Gurugram, and if you are nearby, our Gurugram home tuition guide covers local matching; tutors in other cities are listed on our cities page.

Olympiads, foundation courses and stretching a strong student

Some Class 6 to 10 students enjoy science enough to want more: science olympiads, national-level talent searches, or an early foundation for NEET or JEE. A home tutor can help here in ways a large batch cannot.

  • Depth over speed. Olympiad questions reward reasoning, not recall. The best preparation is working slowly through fewer, harder problems and discussing why an approach works.
  • No neglect of school work. A foundation course that leaves board chapters shaky is a poor trade. A tutor can make sure NCERT is secure first and stretch from there.
  • Watch the load. Adding olympiad preparation, coaching and school tests together can burn out a twelve-year-old. A tutor should help you choose rather than add.

Check the official website of each olympiad for its current syllabus, levels and dates, as these change from year to year.

How to choose the best science tutor: a demo checklist

A tutor's profile tells you about qualifications and experience. A demo class tells you whether they can teach your child. During and after the demo, ask yourself:

  1. Did the tutor start by finding out what the child knows? A few quick questions on the current chapter, and perhaps on the chapter before it, should come before any teaching.
  2. Did they explain the concept, not just the answer? Ask them to explain one idea the child found hard in a second, different way.
  3. Did the child draw or solve something? A diagram or a numerical attempted by the child during the demo tells you more than any explanation from the tutor.
  4. Do they know the board? Ask how the Class 10 paper is structured for your board, and how they use NCERT (for CBSE) or the prescribed textbooks (for ICSE).
  5. Can they link science to real life? Good science teaching constantly connects to the kitchen, the road, the body and the weather.
  6. Did they suggest a plan? What will the first month cover, how often will there be tests, and how will you hear about progress?
  7. How did your child feel afterwards? Comfort matters, especially for younger children. A child who wants to ask questions is a child who will learn.

If the demo leaves several of these unanswered, tell us and we will arrange a demo with the next tutor on the shortlist. You can book one from our free demo class page.

What a science home tutor costs

Across NXTutors, most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. Where a science tutor sits in that range depends on:

  • Class. Classes 6 to 8 usually sit towards the lower end; Class 9 and especially Class 10 board preparation sit higher.
  • Board. ICSE (three separate sciences), IGCSE and IB MYP tutoring tends to cost more than CBSE at the same class, partly because fewer tutors specialise in them.
  • One subject or three. A tutor covering all three sciences may charge more per hour than one covering a single science, but less than three separate specialists combined.
  • Experience. Tutors with many years of board-class teaching and strong verified reviews charge more.
  • Home or online, and travel. Home sessions that involve a long commute are priced higher than online sessions or a tutor from your own area.
  • Frequency. Many tutors offer a lower hourly rate for three or more sessions a week, or a monthly arrangement.

You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo, and we only shortlist tutors inside the budget you give us. For a fuller breakdown by class and subject, see our pricing guide.

How NXTutors matches a science tutor

Rather than handing you a long list of profiles, we do the sorting. You tell us the student's class, board, which sciences need help, your locality, the days and times that work, home or online, any preference such as a female tutor, and a budget range. Then:

  1. We shortlist two or three matched tutors who fit the class, board and subjects as well as the timing, location and budget.
  2. You book a free demo class with the tutor you like best. The demo is a normal lesson on the student's current chapter, so you see real teaching.
  3. You decide after the demo. If it is not right, tell us and we suggest another tutor. Switching is free, and there is no long contract.
  4. Tutors go through an ID check before they are shortlisted, and you judge the fit yourself in the free demo class.

Start by browsing all tutors or booking a free demo class. For board-year help, read our Class 10 science tuition guide, and for the other core board subject, our Class 10 maths tuition guide. Families in Gurugram looking for maths as well can also see maths home tutors in Gurgaon.

Science Home Tutors for Classes 6–10: common questions

What are the fees for a science home tutor?

Across NXTutors, most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. Science tuition for Classes 6 to 8 usually sits towards the lower end, while Class 9 and Class 10 board preparation sit higher. ICSE, IGCSE and IB MYP science, a tutor covering all three sciences, long travel and the tutor's experience can all move the fee up; booking three or more sessions a week often brings the hourly rate down. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo class.

How do I find a good science home tutor near me?

Tell NXTutors your child's class, board, which sciences need help, your area, preferred timings, home or online, and your budget. We shortlist two or three science tutors who fit all of it, looking at travel time at your slot rather than just distance, and you try the one you prefer in a free demo class. If no strong tutor is close enough, an online or hybrid arrangement with a specialist is often the better choice.

Is online science tuition as good as home tuition?

For many students, yes. Home tuition suits younger children and students who need someone beside them while they draw diagrams and solve numericals. Online tuition suits older, self-motivated students and widens the choice of specialist tutors, for example for ICSE Chemistry or IGCSE Physics. A good online tutor uses a digital whiteboard or camera so diagrams and working stay visible. Many families mix one home session a week with one online session.

Should my child have one tutor for all of science or separate tutors for Physics, Chemistry and Biology?

For Classes 6 to 8, and for CBSE Classes 9 and 10 where science is one subject and one exam paper, one good science tutor is usually best. For ICSE Classes 9 and 10, where Physics, Chemistry and Biology are separate papers, or when one part of science is clearly weaker than the others, a specialist for that part can make more difference. Many families use one tutor for all three and add a specialist only for the weakest subject.

Can I get a female home tutor for maths and science?

Yes. If you prefer a female tutor, tell us when you share your requirements and we shortlist only female tutors who fit the class, board, subjects, location and timing. For some slots and areas the choice is smaller, so we will tell you honestly if it may take longer and may suggest a different time or online sessions with a female tutor as an alternative.

Is the demo class with a science tutor really free?

Yes. After we share two or three matched tutors, you book a free demo class with the one you prefer. It is a normal lesson on your child's current science chapter, so you can see how the tutor explains concepts, handles diagrams and numericals, and connects with your child. If it is not the right fit, tell us and we arrange a demo with another tutor. Switching tutors is free.

Do your science tutors teach CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE and IB?

Yes. We match science tutors to the board as well as the class, because CBSE, ICSE, Cambridge IGCSE and IB MYP science are taught and assessed differently. CBSE tutors should work from NCERT first; ICSE tutors should know the separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology syllabuses; IGCSE and IB MYP tutors should know how those programmes assess practical and investigation skills.

Will a science home tutor help with diagrams, numericals and practicals?

A good one will make them a routine part of every week. That means practising labelled biology diagrams and physics ray diagrams until they can be drawn neatly from memory, solving numericals with the formula, units and final answer written at every step, and going through the aim, procedure, observations and precautions of each prescribed experiment. Simple, safe activities can be done at home, but anything involving heat, acids or mains electricity belongs in the school lab.
