What is a science tutor for, at each stage from Class 6 to Class 10?

• Classes 6 and 7. NCERT's Curiosity books, or your school's own text, are full of activities. The tutor turns each one into a clear sentence and a neat sketch. Ask yourself: does my child now use the proper scientific word?
• Class 8. Physics, chemistry and biology start to separate, and the first numericals appear. Check that every number in homework carries its unit.
• Class 9. The book gets noticeably harder, with motion graphs, matter and the cell all arriving in one year. The question is whether gaps are closed within the month they appear.
• Class 10, or Standard 10 for the SSC. Every chapter now points at the board paper. Has your child written a full timed section yet?

Up to Class 10, a single tutor for all three sciences usually works well. One person sees the whole picture, so a physics numerical that keeps failing can be traced to weak arithmetic or to a missing idea. Does it change anything if my child studies science on the Gujarat board?

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB), based in Gandhinagar, conducts the SSC examination at the end of Standard 10 and sets its own syllabus and paper design, which it revises from time to time. For choosing a tutor, three questions matter more than any pattern. Can the tutor teach in the medium your child answers in, Gujarati or English, using the textbook's own terms? Will practice come from the board's subject-wise question bank for Standards 9 and 10 and from its past and model papers on gsebeservice.com? How does CBSE divide the 80 board marks in Class 10 science?

Eighty marks ride on the board paper. The other 20 are the school's, handed out 5 at a time for the portfolio, periodic tests, practical-based subject enrichment and multiple assessment. Biology takes the biggest share of the board's 80 at 30 marks; physics and chemistry get 25 apiece. Unit by unit:

What does each block of the Class 10 science paper ask for?

The 2026-27 CBSE sample paper has 39 questions, and each block calls for its own kind of practice:

1. Twenty one-mark questions, multiple-choice and assertion–reason: quick, accurate recall, with every option read before answering.
2. Six two-mark answers: exactly as many separate points as there are marks, no padding.
3. Seven three-mark answers: a short explanation, often with an equation or a small diagram.
4. Three four-mark questions built on a case or source: read the passage or data first, then answer from it.
5. Three five-mark long answers: a diagram or equation plus four or five clear points.

CBSE releases sample papers and marking schemes on cbseacademic before the exam. They are the most reliable practice material, and a tutor should mark your child's answers against them rather than against a guidebook.

Which topics stay with the school, and how many board sittings are there?

Three pieces of the 2026-27 syllabus will not be on the board paper, because the school marks them itself: evolution; how elements are placed in the periodic table; and the trio of electric motor, electromagnetic induction and generator. They still count towards internal marks and reappear in Class 11, so they deserve proper teaching, just not board-revision time. Board questions also lean on the 14 experiments named in the curriculum, which puts the practical file on the revision list.

The main exam is compulsory for everyone in Class 10. After it, an eligible student can choose a second sitting to try to raise the score in as many as three subjects, and science can be one of them. The 2027 dates are not yet out; follow cbse.gov.in and plan as if the main exam is the only chance. The board-year planner lays out the months.

What should a family know about Class 9 science now?

Class 9 now runs on Exploration, NCERT's new textbook, in CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum. The split of 80 exam marks and 20 internal has not moved. Matter, its nature and behaviour is the heaviest unit at 27 marks; the world of living follows on 25, motion, force, work and sound on 23, and Earth as a system brings up the rear with 5. How is ICSE science different for a tutor?

CISCE does not set one science paper for ICSE Class 10. Physics, Chemistry and Biology are each examined on their own, with separate internal marks. Because every ICSE school picks its own textbooks inside the syllabus, a tutor should teach from the books in your child's bag and from CISCE's specimen papers, not from an NCERT scheme. Definitions word-perfect and numericals worked to the last line are what score. Some families want help with just one of the three papers, often from Class 9. ICSE science tutors are fewer, so ask early; an online tutor widens the choice.

What does a good week of science tuition look like?

Whatever the board, the most useful lessons follow a steady pattern rather than a fresh lecture each time. A week with a capable tutor usually includes:

• A recall check on last week's chapter, a few quick questions asked aloud before anything new.
• One diagram drawn from memory: a ray diagram, a circuit with standard symbols (ammeter in series, voltmeter in parallel), the heart or the nephron, labels spelled correctly.
• One balanced equation set, with state symbols where the question wants them.
• A short written answer marked there and then, with the tutor pointing out which point earned the mark.
• Homework the tutor will actually check at the next lesson.
