What JEE asks of a student, in brief

The National Testing Agency runs JEE (Main). In the 2026 bulletin, Paper 1 was a computer-based test in mathematics, physics and chemistry with 25 questions per subject: 20 multiple-choice items and 5 that need a numerical answer typed in. That makes 75 questions and 300 marks. A correct answer earns four marks and a wrong one costs a mark, in both kinds of question, so careless guessing has a price. There were two sessions, and the better result counted. Candidates who rank high enough in Paper 1 become eligible for JEE (Advanced), set as two compulsory papers and offered in English and Hindi. The brochure allowed at most two attempts at Advanced, in consecutive years, while Main had no age limit. These rules can change, so read them each year on jeemain.nta.nic.in and jeeadv.ac.in rather than trusting any summary, including this one.

Pick one role for the tutor, and write it down

Families who get good value from a JEE tutor tend to agree on the role before the first paid class. Families who do not tend to discover, months later, that the tutor has been re-teaching chapters the student already heard once. Choose from these four, and pick at most two:

The last role is the heaviest. A tutor who carries it needs to write a chapter calendar from the official syllabus at the start of Class 11, and the family must protect fixed study hours at home. If that sounds like more than one person can do, it usually is; a batch plus a narrower tutor role is often the steadier arrangement. JEE alongside GUJCET for Gujarat Board students

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, which runs the SSC and HSC examinations, also conducts GUJCET, the state's own entrance test. A Science stream student with mathematics on the Gujarat board may therefore be preparing for three papers in Class 12: the HSC board paper, GUJCET and JEE (Main). They overlap in content but not in the way marks are earned, and a tutor should plan for that openly rather than hope one kind of practice covers the others.

• Keep the board paper first in the final term. The HSC result matters on its own, and written answers need their own practice slot each week.
• Treat GUJCET on its own terms. Take its structure, syllabus and registration only from the board's website, gseb.org; we do not summarise it here.
• Use JEE problems to build depth. The harder multi-step questions stretch a student further than either state paper, which helps once the basics are secure.

Which tutors can reach your home every week?

Vadodara's main railway line runs through the middle of the city. Vadodara Junction sits at Sayajigunj, with the platform 6 exit opening towards Alkapuri and the newer west, while Vishvamitri and Makarpura stations lie further south on the same line. In practice, families on the western side and families in the older city and south often draw tutors from different pools. Home or online, subject by subject

Evening roads on Gotri Road, Old Padra Road, Waghodia Road and around the main junctions are busiest as people return home, and that is exactly when most students are free after school and a batch. Splitting the week between home visits and online sessions keeps the routine alive through that.

What your school board changes

The NTA syllabus is built on NCERT content. How far a student must travel to reach it depends on the board and on the language they read most easily.

• Gujarat Board (GSEB), Science stream. The board's own question banks and past papers serve the school side. The tutor's added work is objective and numerical practice at entrance depth, and steady written-answer practice so the HSC does not suffer.
• CBSE. NCERT is the school book, so content lines up closely. The usual gap is the switch back to full written steps before the board paper after months of objective work. See the CBSE home tutors in Vadodara page.

• Gujarati or English. A student who studied in Gujarati medium may know every idea and still stumble over English technical terms. Check the language list in the current bulletin, decide the paper language early, and ask for a tutor comfortable with the terms in both.

Five things to check in the JEE demo

1. Before teaching anything, did the tutor ask about the board, the batch timetable and the most recent test?
2. Handed three questions your child could not solve, did the tutor find the exact step where it went wrong, and then let your child finish?
3. Could your child follow the explanation comfortably in Gujarati, English or a mix?
4. Did the tutor explain how negative marking should change the way your child guesses?
5. Can the tutor reach your locality at the same time every week, from where they live?
