English is the subject families most often leave to chance. A child reads, speaks and writes it every day, so it feels as if it should look after itself. Then a Class 10 paper comes back with marks lost on a letter format, or a Grade 8 student joins an international school and cannot keep up with the reading, or a seven-year-old still guesses at words instead of reading them. English tuition works when it is aimed at the skill that is actually weak, not at "English" as a whole. This guide explains the four skills a tutor should work on, what changes from early reading to the senior years, how CBSE, ICSE, ISC, Cambridge IGCSE and IB examine the subject, and how to judge an English tutor in a single demo class.
Every board splits English into roughly the same four skills, even if the papers weight them differently. A useful tutor finds out which of the four is costing your child marks or confidence, and spends most of the time there.
Literature sits across all four. Board literature answers reward a student who can quote or refer to the text, explain a character's motive or a poet's choice, and do it in the word limit. That is a writing skill as much as a reading one, and it can be taught.
The right English tutor for a six-year-old learning to read is rarely the right one for a Class 12 student preparing literature answers. We match on the stage first.
| Stage | Main focus | What progress looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Nursery to Class 2 | Letter sounds, blending, sight words, listening to stories, forming letters | Reads simple books aloud without guessing; retells a story in order |
| Classes 3 to 5 | Reading fluency, simple comprehension, spelling patterns, writing full sentences and short paragraphs | Reads a chapter book independently; writes a paragraph with capitals, full stops and a clear order |
| Classes 6 to 8 | Grammar in context, paragraph and letter writing, wider reading, early literature answers | Plans before writing; fewer repeated grammar errors; answers "why" questions about a text |
| Classes 9 and 10 | Board formats, unseen passages under time, literature answers within word limits | Finishes the paper on time; writing tasks score on format and content, not just language |
| Classes 11 and 12 | Longer compositions, critical reading, literature analysis, project work | Argues a point across several paragraphs; supports claims about a text with evidence |
| IGCSE and IB | Analysis of unseen texts, extended essays and coursework, oral assessments | Explains how a writer creates an effect, not only what the text says |
Early reading needs its own kind of tutor. A child who is behind in reading at five or six usually needs systematic work on letter sounds and blending, short daily practice, and a lot of reading aloud with an adult who corrects gently. Long sessions do not help at this age; twenty to thirty focused minutes do. Our primary home tutor guide covers the early years in more detail.
CBSE offers English Language and Literature in Classes 9 and 10 and English Core in Classes 11 and 12. In each case the board paper is out of 80 and the school awards 20 more through internal assessment. The split of the 80 marks tells a tutor where to spend time. From CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum:
| Section | Class 10 | Class 11 | Class 12 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading (unseen passages) | 20 | 26 | 22 |
| Writing and grammar | 20 (grammar 10, writing 10) | 23 (grammar 7, creative writing 16) | 18 (creative writing only) |
| Literature | 40 | 31 | 40 |
| Prescribed NCERT books | First Flight, Footprints without Feet | Hornbill, Snapshots | Flamingo, Vistas |
| Internal assessment | 20, including 5 for listening and speaking | 20: listening 5, speaking 5, project 10 | 20: listening 5, speaking 5, project 10 |
In Class 10 the reading section has a discursive passage and a case-based factual passage with a chart or data, and the writing tasks are a formal letter and an analytical paragraph on a map, chart or graph. Literature is half the paper, so a student who has read the chapters but cannot write a structured 100 to 120 word answer loses marks that are easy to recover with practice. Our Class 10 tutor guide shows how English fits into a whole board-year plan.
In Class 12 grammar leaves the paper, and the writing tasks are marked on format, content and accuracy. The literature section asks for longer answers that connect themes across chapters, which is where many students who were comfortable in Class 10 start to slip.
CISCE treats English as two subjects, language and literature, each with its own paper. That makes it heavier than CBSE English and it rewards students who read widely and write at length.
Paper 1, English Language, and Paper 2, Literature in English, are each two hours and 80 marks, with 20 marks of internal assessment for each. Paper 1 asks for a composition of about 300 to 350 words, a formal or friendly letter, a notice with a matching e-mail, an unseen passage of about 500 words with vocabulary, short answers and a summary, and a compulsory grammar question on prepositions, conjunctions, verbs and sentence structure. The language internal assessment is 10 marks for listening and 10 for speaking. Paper 2 covers a play, short stories and poems from the prescribed texts. Our notes on ICSE Class 10 English papers go question by question.
English Language and Literature in English are each a three-hour theory paper of 80 marks plus 20 marks of project work. The language paper has a composition of 400 to 450 words chosen from six topics (narrative, descriptive, reflective, argumentative, discursive or a short story), directed writing, a proposal in CISCE's format, grammar and comprehension. The literature paper tests drama, short stories and poetry, including the style of a poem, not just its content. See our guide to ISC Class 12 English.
For an ICSE or ISC student, the tutor's most valuable job is usually timed writing. Two-hour and three-hour papers with long compositions punish a student who writes slowly or plans badly, and only regular practice under the clock fixes that.
International boards examine English as analysis and communication rather than as prescribed chapters. Two decisions matter here: which IGCSE English your child is entered for, and how an IB student handles unseen texts and the oral.
| First Language English 0500 | English as a Second Language 0510 | |
|---|---|---|
| Intended for | Students whose first language is English | Students learning English as an additional language |
| Written assessment | Paper 1 Reading (2 hours, 80 marks, 50%), plus either Paper 2 Directed Writing and Composition (2 hours, 80 marks) or a Coursework Portfolio of three assignments | Reading and Writing (2 hours, 60 marks, 70%) and Listening (about 50 minutes, 40 marks, 30%) |
| Speaking | Optional Speaking and Listening test, reported separately | Speaking test of 10 to 15 minutes, reported separately on 0510; counted in the grade on 0511 |
| Grades | A* to G | A* to G |
The school decides the entry, but parents should know which one it is: First Language rewards analysis of how a writer uses language and extended composition, while Second Language rewards accurate understanding and clear, correct writing for a purpose. A tutor preparing a child for the wrong one wastes months.
IB Language A: Language and Literature is studied at SL or HL. Paper 1 is a guided analysis of unseen non-literary texts, such as an advertisement, speech or article; Paper 2 is a comparative essay on two literary works studied in class; and every student gives a 15-minute individual oral, 10 minutes prepared and 5 minutes of questions, on how a global issue is presented in texts they have studied. HL students also write an essay of 1,200 to 1,500 words. At SL the weighting is Paper 1 35%, Paper 2 35% and the oral 30%; at HL it is 35%, 25%, 20% and 20% for the essay. A tutor can coach analysis and give feedback on plans, but coursework must remain the student's own work. Families moving between boards may find our guide to switching from CBSE to IB or IGCSE useful.
Spoken confidence is a separate goal from board marks, and some families want both. Our spoken English guide for students explains what helps.
English sessions look different from maths or science sessions: less explaining, more reading, writing and rewriting. A well-planned hour with a Class 7 to 12 student usually includes:
With younger children the session is shorter and livelier: reading aloud together, sounding out new words, talking about the story, and a few minutes of writing. A tutor who sets a comprehension worksheet and checks it at the end is not teaching reading.
The first class is a free demo. English teaching quality is easy to see if you know what to look for. Bring a piece of your child's recent written work or a marked school paper, and watch for these:
If the fit is wrong, tell us and we arrange a demo with the next tutor on the shortlist; switching later is free as well.
English is one of the subjects that works well online for older students, because writing can be shared and marked on screen. Early reading is different.
| Student | Suits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Learning to read (up to about Class 2) | Home | The tutor needs to see the child's finger on the page, hear every word and keep attention with books and objects |
| Classes 3 to 8 | Home or online | Online works if the child writes on paper and shows it to the camera, or types in a shared document |
| Board classes and ISC | Online or hybrid | Timed writing and marking suit shared documents; a specialist in your board may not live nearby |
| IGCSE and IB | Online or hybrid | Fewer specialists; unseen-text analysis and oral practice work well on a video call |
For online tuition, agree how writing will be handed in before the first class, whether a shared document, photos of the notebook or a writing tablet, so that feedback reaches the student before the next session.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For English, the fee mainly follows the class, the board (IB and IGCSE specialists are fewer), the tutor's experience with that board's papers, travel at your slot and how many sessions a week you take. Tutors set their own fees, and you see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo. Our pricing guide has more detail.
Tell us the class, board, what worries you (reading, writing, grammar, literature, speaking or a specific exam), your area, preferred days and times, home or online, and a budget. We shortlist two or three matched tutors, you choose one for a free demo class, and if it does not work out you can switch tutor at no cost. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified. You can also browse tutor profiles yourself or book a free demo class directly.
English improves steadily rather than suddenly, so the earlier a tutor starts the more a student gains. The start of the session, the summer break or the first weak unit test are all good moments. For a board year, starting before the half-yearly exam leaves time to build writing habits instead of cramming formats.
NXTutors is based in Gurugram, where we have a separate page for an English home tutor in Gurgaon and a full guide to home tuition in Gurugram. Online English tuition is available across India. Students preparing for study abroad can read our SAT Reading and Writing guide, and families who also need help in other subjects can start from our maths or science tutor pages.

An English home tutor should work first on whichever of reading, writing, grammar or speaking is costing your child marks or confidence. Most students need two of these, not all. The tutor should find out from a piece of real written work in the first session, and teach grammar inside the student's own writing.
Yes, an English tutor can help a young child who struggles to read through systematic work on letter sounds and blending. Short daily practice and plenty of reading aloud with gentle correction help most; twenty to thirty focused minutes suit this age better than an hour. Home sessions beat online here, because the tutor must hear every word.
The CBSE Class 10 English board paper is out of 80 in 2026-27: reading 20, writing and grammar 20, and literature 40. Literature comes from First Flight and Footprints without Feet. The school adds 20 internal marks, including 5 for listening and speaking. Literature is half the paper, so structured answers within word limits matter.
In CBSE English Core for Classes 11 and 12, literature grows and grammar leaves the Class 12 paper. Class 11 has reading 26, grammar and creative writing 23 and literature 31 from Hornbill and Snapshots. Class 12 has reading 22, creative writing 18 and literature 40 from Flamingo and Vistas, plus 20 internal marks.
ICSE English differs from CBSE because it is two papers, English Language and Literature in English, each two hours and 80 marks with 20 internal marks. Paper 1 includes a 300 to 350 word composition, a letter, a notice and e-mail, an unseen passage with a summary, and grammar. It asks for more sustained writing than CBSE.
An ISC English student usually needs timed writing practice most, because each paper is three hours and 80 marks with 20 project marks. The language paper asks for a 400 to 450 word composition from six topics, directed writing, a proposal, grammar and comprehension. The literature paper also tests a poem's style.
The school decides between IGCSE First Language English 0500 and English as a Second Language 0510, but parents should know which entry applies. First Language rewards analysis of how writers use language and extended composition. Second Language tests reading, writing and listening for learners, so a tutor preparing for the wrong one wastes months.
IB Language A: Language and Literature is assessed through two papers and a 15-minute individual oral. Paper 1 is a guided analysis of unseen non-literary texts; Paper 2 is a comparative essay on two works. HL students also write a 1,200 to 1,500 word essay. A tutor can coach analysis, but coursework must remain the student's own.
Online English tuition is as effective as home tuition for most students from about Class 3 upwards, provided writing is shared through a document, notebook photos or a tablet. Board, ISC, IGCSE and IB students often do well online or hybrid. For children still learning to read, home tuition usually works better.
Tell us the class, board and your area. We share two or three matched tutors, and the first class is a free demo.
