Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Most Nagpur students sit either the Maharashtra State Board or one of the national boards, and for English that split matters less than a second question: in which language does your child learn everything else? A Class 8 student in an English-medium CBSE school and a Class 8 student whose other subjects are taught in Marathi both study English, but they need very different lessons. This page explains how each board examines English, how a tutor should work with a child whose classroom language is not English, how tutors get around the city's five zones, and how to judge an English tutor at the free demo.
Tell us the board before anything else. The English paper differs more between boards than most parents expect, and so does the tutor who suits it.
| Board | Assessment in brief | Tutor's priority |
|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra State Board (SSC, HSC) | The board's own English textbooks and papers; pattern taken only from the board's notices | Teaching from the state reader and practising the board's past papers |
| CBSE Class 10 | 80-mark paper: a discursive passage and a case-based passage with data, grammar and two writing tasks, and 40 marks of literature; 20 from school, including listening and speaking | Short literature answers that stay inside the limit |
| CBSE Classes 11–12 | English Core, with 20 internal marks split into listening 5, speaking 5 and a project 10 | Longer reading passages and creative writing formats |
| ICSE Class 10 | Language and literature as two separate papers; the language paper carries 10 marks each for listening and speaking in internal assessment | A compulsory grammar question on prepositions, conjunctions, verbs and sentence structure |
| ISC Classes 11–12 | Two three-hour papers of 80 marks, each with 20 marks of project work | Timed long compositions |
| IB and IGCSE | Analysis of unseen texts, orals, coursework; usually taught by a specialist online | Explaining how a writer creates an effect |
ICSE families can read our ICSE Class 10 English papers guide. The national English home tutor guide sets out every board's English paper in more detail, including IGCSE First and Second Language.
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education sets the SSC at the end of Class 10 and the HSC at the end of Class 12, and schools under it teach in more than one medium. We describe its English paper only in general terms; the board's notices and your child's school have the current pattern. What we can say is what helps in tuition.
A child who studies science, maths and social studies in Marathi, and meets English mostly in the English period, rarely lacks intelligence or effort; they lack exposure. The right tutor for them:
The same approach helps a student moving from a Marathi-medium school to an English-medium one, or from the State Board to CBSE, where the first term is usually the hardest.
A student who understands English well but will not speak it in class may need a different focus altogether; our spoken English guide for students covers that.
English grows with daily contact, and one or two tutor sessions a week cannot supply all of it. Three small habits make a tutor's work go further:
Ask the tutor at the demo which of these they would like your child to do. A tutor who expects practice between lessons, and checks it, is usually the one who gets results.
Nagpur's two metro lines cross at Sitabuldi: the Orange Line runs north to south, down Wardha Road, and the Aqua Line runs east to west. Homes near either line are easy for a tutor without a vehicle; elsewhere, a two-wheeler and a tutor who lives nearby matter most.
| Zone | Nearest metro | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Central West Nagpur, e.g. Bajaj Nagar and Dhantoli | Aqua Line at Shankar Nagar Square and LAD Square; Orange Line at Congress Nagar in Dhantoli | Parking near market lanes and clinic streets is tight in the evening, so a tutor on the metro or a two-wheeler is easier |
| Hingna Road and Ring Road, e.g. Trimurti Nagar | Aqua Line at Rachana Ring Road Junction and Subhash Nagar, then an auto | Many layouts look alike from the main road, so give the lane and plot number |
| Wardha Road, e.g. Manish Nagar | Orange Line stations along the road, including Ujjwal Nagar and Airport | Allow extra time for the railway crossing near Manish Nagar at busy hours |
| North Nagpur, e.g. Seminary Hills | Orange Line only at the southern edge; most homes are reached by road | Government colonies in Seminary Hills have gated entrances, so inform security first |
| East and South-East Nagpur, e.g. Wathoda | Aqua Line's eastern section for Nandanvan and Wardhaman Nagar; none for Wathoda, Manewada or Hudkeshwar | Look first for tutors who live in the south-east or ride a two-wheeler |
Because the metro links the centre with Wardha Road and Hingna Road, a tutor from the older neighbourhoods can realistically teach weekly in those zones. Every area page is on our Nagpur home tuition page, and the Nagpur tuition guide adds more local detail.
For younger children, and for any student building basic vocabulary and reading fluency, home tuition is usually the better start: the tutor hears every word and can keep a restless child engaged with books rather than a screen. From about Class 6, online lessons work well for writing, because compositions and letters can be shared and marked before the next class. Online is also the realistic route for IB and IGCSE English, where families in Nagpur often combine a local tutor for other subjects with a specialist teaching from elsewhere in India. A mixed week, one home visit and one online session, suits families on roads that clog at the evening peak, such as the Ring Road or Bhandara Road.
Our home tutor or online tutor article compares the two formats in more depth.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. In Nagpur, an English tutor's fee depends on the class and board, experience with that paper, the ride to your home at your chosen time and the number of lessons each week. Tutors set their own fees, and you see all of them before the demo. Our Nagpur home tuition fees guide has more.
Send the class, the board, the medium of instruction if your child is on the State Board, what worries you most, your locality, the times that suit and a budget. We come back with two or three matched English tutors, each fee shown, and the first class with the one you choose is a free demo. Switching tutor later is free. One who builds vocabulary and sentence patterns patiently before moving to exam formats. The tutor should work from your child's prescribed State Board English textbook, read aloud with them, and use past board papers once the basics are secure. Tell us the medium in your request so we match a tutor used to this starting point.
Yes, at home and online. CBSE Class 10 English is an 80-mark paper with reading, grammar, a formal letter, an analytical paragraph and 40 marks of literature, plus 20 marks from school. Ask for a tutor who marks literature answers for length and relevance, since that is where many easily recoverable marks are lost.
Yes. The first term after a switch is usually the hardest, because the new board expects more reading and longer written answers. A tutor can cover the prescribed texts your child missed, teach the new writing formats and build timed practice. For ICSE, expect separate language and literature papers with a compulsory grammar question.
Most homes along Wardha Road are an auto ride from an Orange Line station such as Ujjwal Nagar or Airport, so a tutor from central Nagpur can often come by metro. Near Manish Nagar, allow extra time for the railway crossing at busy hours, and give the building gate the tutor's details once.
Usually online. Families following the IB or Cambridge IGCSE in Nagpur often combine a local tutor for other subjects with an online specialist from elsewhere in India. For IGCSE, first confirm whether your child is entered for First Language English or English as a Second Language, because the two need different preparation.
For children still learning to read, two or three short sessions a week at home work better than one long one, alongside ten minutes of reading aloud daily with a parent. From about Class 6, one or two hour-long sessions are usually enough, provided the child writes something between lessons for the tutor to mark.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour, with Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET toward the upper end. For English in Nagpur, the fee depends on the class, the board, the tutor's ride at your chosen time and how many weekly lessons you take. All fees are shown before the demo.
