Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

English home tutor in Varanasi: board marks, Hindi-to-English translation and the confidence to speak

"We need an English tutor" can mean four quite different requests in a Varanasi home. A Class 10 UP Board student may need grammar and the translation question that the board sets from Hindi into English. A CBSE student may be losing marks on literature answers. An ICSE or ISC student may need long compositions marked properly, and a seven-year-old may simply need to read without stumbling. NXTutors asks which of these you mean, along with the board, class and neighbourhood, and comes back with two or three English tutors who fit, fees shown in advance. The first class with the tutor you choose is a free demo.

How is UP Board High School English marked?

The UP Board (Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh), which has had a regional office in Varanasi since 1978, sets a 70-mark English paper for High School, with 30 more marks assessed in school. For 2026-27 the paper is divided like this:

  • Literature, 35: First Flight carries 23 (prose 15, poetry 8) and Footprints Without Feet 12.
  • Grammar, 15: including 4 marks for turning four Hindi sentences into English.
  • Reading, 10 and writing, 10.

The model paper allows three hours plus a reading period. Part A is twenty one-mark multiple-choice questions on an OMR sheet, and Part B carries 50 descriptive marks. Since grammar and translation together outweigh reading and writing combined, they deserve a slot every week. And because the OMR sheet allows no cutting or erasing, a tutor should run Part A practice on printed OMR-style sheets so that each choice is settled before it is marked. Our UP Board tutors in Varanasi page looks at the board's other subjects.

What does CBSE Class 10 English reward?

CBSE students read the same two NCERT books, First Flight and Footprints Without Feet, but the paper spreads its marks differently. English Language and Literature (184) gives 80 marks to the board paper and 20 to internal assessment. Reading is worth 20, drawn from two passages: a discursive text, and a factual, case-based one that includes a chart or data. Writing brings 10, split evenly between a formal letter and an analytical paragraph. Grammar is 10 and literature 40.

With literature at half the paper, a CBSE student gains more from a weekly pair of literature answers, kept inside the word limit and compared line by line with the book, than from yet another grammar worksheet.

How can a tutor make Hindi-to-English translation reliable?

On the UP Board, translation brings 4 marks in High School; in Class 12 it rises to 5 marks across seven or eight sentences. Students who translate word by word lose those marks; students who follow a routine keep them. A tutor can teach a four-pass routine:

  1. Fix the time. Decide whether the Hindi sentence describes a habit, something happening now, something finished or something still to come, and pick the English tense to match.
  2. Find who does what. Identify the subject and the verb, then rebuild the sentence in English order: subject, verb, object.
  3. Add the small words. Hindi has no articles and places its linking words after the noun, so "a", "the" and the right preposition need conscious checking.
  4. Read it aloud. If it sounds like Hindi wearing English words, rework it.

This drill also suits students on any board who are switching from Hindi-medium to English-medium books. One small Hindi paragraph put into English every week reveals precisely where their sentence building fails.

What changes in UP Board Class 12 English?

Intermediate English is one 100-mark paper. Literature, from Flamingo and Vistas, carries 40, and the poetry section asks about figures of speech. Grammar is 25, translation included; writing is 20, made up of a roughly 150-word article plus a letter, which may be to an editor, a complaint or a business letter; reading is 15.

Schools also run four unit tests in the year for remedial teaching. They do not count towards the result, but they are a handy check on whether tuition is working. A useful habit for the tutor is a running list of figures of speech, each with an example taken from the prescribed poems, and one full article or letter every fortnight, written and marked.

What should CBSE students expect from English Core?

In Class 11, English Core divides its marks as reading 26, literature 31 from Hornbill and Snapshots, and grammar with creative writing 23. In Class 12 grammar drops out and literature takes a larger share. The board paper is worth 80; the other 20 are for listening, speaking and a project. Strong Class 10 scorers sometimes relax here and then lose marks on exact reading questions and writing formats, so a timed reading section once a month is time well spent. There is more on the course in our national English home tutor guide.

Varanasi has fewer tutors for these courses than for the boards; name the course when you first write, and expect that an online specialist may be the realistic answer.

Will the tutor work on speaking too?

They can, and it is not separate from the exam: CBSE, ICSE and ISC each give marks to listening and speaking. One routine is to finish every lesson with your child retelling the passage in their own words, then, month by month, move to arguing a point out loud, playing short scenes and handling questions they have not prepared for. Tell us if speaking confidence for interviews or admissions matters to you as much as marks, since that steers the shortlist. Our spoken English guide for students adds further ideas.

Help for early readers in Classes 1 to 5

For young children, English tuition is about reading with ease. Warning signs include guessing at new words, losing the line on the page, or finishing a page aloud and then being unable to retell it. Little and often works: sounds blended into words, a page read aloud daily with gentle correction, and a retelling afterwards. Where English is rarely spoken at home, a tutor who talks about pictures and stories in simple English, dipping into Hindi only to unlock a word, builds listening and reading together. For this age, request a tutor who specialises in primary classes.

Six Varanasi localities and the tutor's journey

Most tutors here come by two-wheeler or auto. Someone living on your side of Varanasi is far more likely to turn up on time every week than someone crossing the centre. The Varanasi page lists every locality.

  • Mahmoorganj: quieter family homes and newer multi-storey buildings along Mahmoorganj Road, with autos easy to find on the main road. Share the floor and flat number and let the guard know the visit timing.
  • Rathyatra: a crossing of main roads that is easy to describe to a tutor from Sigra, Bhelupur or Lanka; time the lesson to miss the evening jam at the crossing.
  • Bhelupur: older settled lanes of houses and builder floors. Give the colony name, the lane and a plain landmark such as the Durgakund pond.
  • Durgakund: houses and newer apartment buildings around the pond; register the tutor at the gate if you live in a block, and settle a slot early because the road towards Lanka fills up later in the day.
  • Lanka: beside a large campus, with many teachers and students living close by, which widens the choice of English tutors within a short ride. Side-lane homes are easier to reach than those on the main road.
  • Nagwa: houses and apartment buildings near the southern riverside, close to Lanka and Durgakund, so a tutor can often arrive without crossing the city centre.

From about Class 3, online English is workable provided the tutor receives the written work ahead of each lesson as photos or a shared document, and it opens the door to ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists. Early readers and students in the first months of a move to English medium still do better with a tutor in the room. Our home tutor or online tutor article compares the two.

What to look for in an English demo

  1. A look at real work first. The tutor asks for a recent test or notebook before teaching.
  2. Language that lands. Your child follows the explanation, and the lesson ends with more English in it than it began with.
  3. Something produced. Your child writes a paragraph or speaks at length; the lesson is not all listening.
  4. Knowledge of your paper. For the UP Board, that includes the translation question.
  5. A next step. Homework that will be marked, plus a rough plan for the weeks ahead.

Not happy with the demo? Let us know, and another tutor from your shortlist takes the next one; switching later is free as well. The demo class checklist has more pointers.

What does an English home tutor in Varanasi charge?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, which moves with the class and board, the tutor's experience of that paper, the trip to your locality and how often you meet. You can compare all fees before any demo; the Varanasi home tuition fees article explains more.

What should your request include?

Class and board; the skill that concerns you, such as translation, literature, grammar, writing, reading or speaking; the language your child thinks in more comfortably; your locality with a landmark close by; workable days and times; and a budget. Tutors who join go through an ID check, and we reply with two or three matched tutors, fees included. English Home Tutor in Varanasi: common questions

What hourly fee should a Varanasi family expect for an English home tutor?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each English tutor sets their own fee, which moves with the class, the board, the trip to your locality and how often you meet. Every fee is on the shortlist before you agree to a demo.

How does NXTutors pick English tutors for a home in Varanasi?

For English tuition in Varanasi, send the class, board, the skill that worries you and your locality, and we reply with two or three matched tutors. Each fee is shown before the first class, the first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free. Mention the language your child thinks in more comfortably.

Does the UP Board English paper for Varanasi students include Hindi-to-English translation?

Yes, UP Board English for Varanasi students includes translation, with 4 of the 15 High School grammar marks for turning four Hindi sentences into English. In Class 12 it grows to seven or eight sentences worth 5 marks, inside a 25-mark grammar section. A tutor should teach it as a routine of tense, word order and small words, not as memorised answers.

How are the 70 marks of UP Board High School English divided for Varanasi students?

For Varanasi students in 2026-27, UP Board High School English gives literature 35 marks, grammar 15, reading 10 and writing 10, with 30 more assessed in school. Part A has twenty one-mark multiple-choice questions on an OMR sheet that allows no erasing, and Part B carries 50 descriptive marks.

What does UP Board Intermediate English ask of a Class 12 student in Varanasi?

UP Board Intermediate English in Varanasi is one 100-mark paper: literature from Flamingo and Vistas carries 40, grammar with translation 25, writing 20 and reading 15. The writing section asks for a roughly 150-word article plus a letter. A useful tutor habit is one full article or letter every fortnight, written and marked.

Where do CBSE Class 10 students in Varanasi usually lose English marks?

CBSE Class 10 students in Varanasi often lose English marks in literature, which is 40 of the 80 board marks, and in reading, worth 20 from two passages. Literature answers kept inside the word limit and checked against the text usually help more than extra grammar worksheets, since grammar carries only 10 marks.

Will a Varanasi English tutor work on speaking aloud, not only on written papers?

Yes, a Varanasi English tutor can work on speaking as well as marks, and CBSE, ICSE and ISC all give marks to listening and speaking. A good routine starts with retelling a passage aloud and moves to arguing a point, short scenes and unprepared questions. Tell us if speaking for interviews or admissions matters to you, since it changes the shortlist.

Which English courses beyond the state board, such as ISC or IGCSE, can Varanasi tutors cover?

ISC, IGCSE and IB English tutors are fewer in Varanasi than tutors for the boards, so name the exact course when you first write. For IGCSE, say whether your child is entered for First Language or Second Language English. If nobody suitable can travel to you, an online specialist is usually the practical answer.

Can an English tutor reach homes near Lanka or Durgakund in Varanasi?

Usually yes, because many teachers and students live around Lanka in Varanasi, which widens the choice of English tutors within a short ride. The road towards Lanka fills later in the day, so settle a slot early. If you live in an apartment block near Durgakund, register the tutor at the gate before the first lesson.

Is a home English tutor or online lessons better for a young reader in Varanasi?

For a young reader in Varanasi, a home English tutor usually works better, because they can watch the child track words and correct gently as they read aloud. From about Class 3, online English is workable if the tutor sees notebook photos or a shared document before each lesson, and it opens access to ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists.
