Not sure which tutor fits? Tell us the class, board and your sector: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.
| Classes a week | Classes a month | At ₹800 an hour | At ₹2,500 an hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 8 | ₹6,400 a month | ₹20,000 a month |
| 3 | 12 | ₹9,600 a month | ₹30,000 a month |
In a coaching batch, one teacher's hour is shared by many students, so each family pays for a part of it. At home the whole hour is your child's: the pace, the questions and the homework check follow one student, and the tutor's travel to your home is part of the working day. A small group of two or three children from the same society usually costs less per child, with less individual attention.

Varanasi spreads back from the Ganga, and for a family arranging lessons it helps to picture it as five pieces. The crowded middle runs from Sigra and Mahmoorganj to the Lohamandi market. South of the Rathyatra crossing, Bhelupur, Durgakund and Lanka fill the ground towards Assi Ghat. Beyond them, Sunderpur and Chitaipur are newer colonies of self-built houses. In the north-west, the wide roads of the Cantonment lead out past Nadesar to Shivpur, and in the north-east Pandeypur and Paharia stretch towards Sarnath. Varanasi Junction, Banaras station and the main bus stand sit between these pieces, and most tutors travel by two-wheeler or auto. So the question that settles most matches here is a simple one: which side of the city does the tutor already live on, and how long will the evening roads take to bring them to your door?
Everything begins with a single form. Tell us the class, the board, whether your child reads their books in Hindi or English, which subjects are slipping, the locality plus one landmark a rickshaw driver would know, the evening or morning hours that are genuinely open, and a rough monthly spend. Say too whether lessons should happen at your table, over video, or both. Two or three names come back to you; every one of them carries its fee on the profile, and the opening lesson with your pick is free. Here, four Varanasi questions decide who reaches that list:
Ask for the free class to cover whatever chapter school set this week, so you watch real teaching rather than an introduction. Not convinced afterwards? The next person on the list gets a turn, and a change of tutor months later carries no charge either.
Suggestions for Varanasi homes come out of 2 tutor profiles, and 20 Varanasi localities have their own page. Open one and the order is fixed: people living in that very locality, then the wider zone, then anywhere in Varanasi, and finally tutors who teach over video. Because a tutor's evening ride matters more than the map, we sort the city into five travel zones, centre first, then the two southern belts, then the two northern ones: Central Varanasi, South Varanasi, South-west Varanasi, North-west Varanasi and North-east Varanasi. These groupings are ours, made for tutor travel; they are not wards or official divisions.
Sigra is the centre of the centre, with flats, independent houses and shop-fronts side by side and a large cricket stadium that everyone uses for directions. Clinics, markets and schools are packed so close that most errands never leave the area. Next door, Mahmoorganj feels quieter: older family homes and newer multi-storey buildings line Mahmoorganj Road, and the Manduadih flyover nearby carries traffic towards Banaras station, which was called Manduadih until it was renamed in 2020. Rathyatra is a crossing where several main roads meet, on the northern edge of Bhelupur, with apartments, houses and shops around it. Shivpurwa, on the western side, is mostly plots and self-built homes with some two- and three-bedroom flats, and Lohamandi is known for its iron and hardware market, with dense housing behind the shops and the city's main bus stand close by.
Being in the middle is the big advantage here: tutors from almost any direction can reach these homes, and many already live in the surrounding colonies. The trade-off is congestion. Roads fill from late afternoon, parking is scarce, and a tutor on a two-wheeler or in an auto will arrive sooner than one in a car. Give the stadium, the Rathyatra crossing or a well-known shop as your reference point, and in Lohamandi say which entrance to use when a flat sits above a shopfront.
Bhelupur, also written Bhelupura, is one of the older settled parts of the city, bounded by Rathyatra to the north, Lanka to the south, Sonarpura to the east and Sudamapur to the west. Its homes are mostly independent houses, builder floors and plots, including a colony built in the 1970s. Durgakund takes its name from the old pond at its centre, an easy landmark, and mixes houses with newer apartment buildings along a main road of shops and small offices. Lanka sits beside a large campus that brings students and teachers from across the region, so its housing is a dense mix of flats, rented rooms and family houses, with a long strip of shops and eateries. Nagwa, close to the southern riverside, has houses and apartment buildings, some of them still going up.
Because so many teachers and senior students live around Lanka, this is a part of the city where a tutor can often be found within a short ride. The catch is the road near the campus gate, which is crowded at peak hours and short on parking; a home in a side lane is easier to reach than one on the main road. Morning or weekend lessons dodge the evening rush, and Durgakund's pond or the Rathyatra crossing makes a simple meeting point for a first visit.
Sunderpur, also spelt Sundarpur, is close to Lanka but calmer, with independent houses, some flats and plots where families build for themselves; many teachers and long-term tenants live here. Chitaipur, further out, is a growing area where new residential colonies are still spreading, and its housing is mainly independent houses with some villas. Kailashpuri Colony sits among Chitaipur, Sunderpur and Kakarmatta, with plots, houses and some two- and three-bedroom flats. Brij Enclave Colony lies between the Lanka side and the railway areas to the west, with Manduadih, Shivdaspur and Naria as neighbours and new projects still being added.
This is the quietest of the five zones for regular home classes, but colony lanes look alike and public transport is thin in parts, so nearly every tutor comes by two-wheeler. Send the house number, the colony name and the nearest turning everyone knows, or simply a map pin. Brij Enclave Colony has a useful extra: tutors can come from the Lanka side or from the Banaras station side, which widens the pool. The road towards Lanka is the one to plan an evening slot around.
Varanasi Cantonment, which most people simply call Cantt, is a planned area of wide, tree-lined roads with bungalows, government housing and some builder floors. Varanasi Junction railway station lies between it and Chetganj, with lines towards Lucknow, Prayagraj and Chhapra. Nadesar, beside the Cantonment, keeps the same low-density feel, with independent houses, older bungalows and builder floors, and a few well-known hotels that serve as landmarks. Shivpur, on the north-western edge of the city, is newer and roomier, with apartment buildings, houses and gated communities served by the Lucknow road, Shivpur Road and the ring road; the airport at Babatpur lies further out in the same direction.
The first thing to sort out in this zone is the gate. Many Cantonment homes sit inside campuses where visitors give their name, so tell the guard who is coming and check whether the tutor should carry ID. After that the trip is easy, because the roads are wide and parking is simple. Traffic around the junction station is heavy at most hours, so a tutor from Nadesar or Pandeypur may suit you more than one crossing past the station. In Shivpur, start with tutors living in Shivpur itself, Bhojuveer or Parmanandpur, and register them with the security desk if you live in a gated community.
Pandeypur is a settled part of Varanasi North where flats, mostly with two bedrooms, make up much of the housing alongside houses and a few villas; the bus stand and Varanasi Junction lie to its south-west. Paharia, on the way out towards Sarnath, is mainly independent houses with some apartments. Danganj, between Pandeypur and Sarnath, is the reverse: mostly apartment buildings with two- and three-bedroom flats, and Bada and Chhota Lalpur next door. Sarnath is a town just north-east of the city, near where the Varuna joins the Ganga, and its residential side is plotted colonies and low-rise housing rather than tower clusters. Varanasi City station, in Jaitpura, serves the line towards Ballia and Chhapra on this side.
With Pandeypur, Paharia and Danganj packed close together, a tutor living in one can usually reach the others on a short ride. In flats, give the block and floor and tell the guard the class days; in Paharia and Sarnath the tutor rings the doorbell, so share the house number and a clear turning. Sarnath's daytime visitor traffic can slow some roads, so later afternoons and weekends tend to work better there. For a Class 11 or 12 specialist who lives in the south of the city, an online lesson saves the long crossing.
Four groups of syllabuses turn up in Varanasi requests: the UP Board, CBSE, the CISCE pair of ICSE and ISC, and a handful of IB and Cambridge IGCSE students. A Physics tutor who knows one board's paper inside out can still be the wrong person for another, which is why the shortlist is built on board and class at the same time.
The state board's full name is Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh. According to its own website it was created in 1921 at Prayagraj, ran its first examination in 1923, and today recognises schools, lays down curricula and textbooks, and conducts the High School (Class 10) and Intermediate (Class 12) examinations. Its Varanasi regional office opened in 1978 and sits at Orderly Bazar. Ask a UP Board tutor to work from the prescribed books in your child's medium, and read formats, dates and notices only on upmsp.edu.in. See also our page for UP Board tutors in Varanasi.
NCERT textbooks are the backbone of every CBSE paper, and more questions now test whether a child can carry a concept into an unfamiliar problem. Practice on fresh questions, not only the exercises at the back of the chapter, is what helps. Entrance aspirants gain from the shared NCERT base but often have to relearn how to write a complete, stepwise board answer.
The council's Class 10 and Class 12 papers reward breadth and careful written English, with prescribed literature in English and project work in several subjects. A tutor for these boards should map out repeated revision of the whole syllabus, mark answers for exact wording, and stop projects from bunching up just before the papers.
With only a few IB Diploma and Cambridge IGCSE learners in the city, a specialist is usually easier to find over video. For the IB, coursework such as the Internal Assessment and Extended Essay can be guided by a tutor but must be the student's own writing. For IGCSE, timed past papers checked against official mark schemes do most of the work.
Younger children need three things firmly in place: reading without stumbling, number work they can trust, and the habit of finishing written answers. Where Hindi is spoken at home and the school books are in English, short spells of reading aloud each lesson pay off quickly. Olympiad or entrance foundation work can wait until middle-school maths is solid.
Algebra, geometry and the three sciences all get heavier in Class 9, just as some students start a coaching course. Here the tutor's task is to stop school chapters falling behind, so the High School or Class 10 exam year starts on firm ground. CBSE students can use our Class 10 Maths preparation plan and Science notes; UP Board students should stick to the books their board prescribes.
Senior secondary is where most students first feel lost, and Class 11 holds a large share of entrance material. A shaky foundation in Class 11 mechanics or calculus is hard to rebuild later, so one subject expert for each tough paper beats a single all-rounder. For the Intermediate or Class 12 year, read our Class 12 Physics strategies.
Science and Maths lead from Class 9 onwards, with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics making up most requests. Beyond those, NXTutors tutors take English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Social Science, Computer Science, Accountancy, Economics and Business Studies, and many handle every subject for primary pupils. For the four core subjects there are dedicated Varanasi pages: maths tutors at home, science tutors at home, physics tutors at home and chemistry tutors at home.
What good help looks like differs by subject. A Maths tutor hunts for the earliest topic that never made sense, however far back it sits. Physics gets easier once a student explains what is happening before choosing an equation. Chemistry splits three ways, with calculation in Physical, mechanisms in Organic and steady recall in Inorganic; our Organic and Inorganic Chemistry guide for Class 12 goes through it. Students moving from Hindi-medium to English-medium study do better with a tutor who says each scientific term in both languages for a while, then quietly drops the Hindi; for spoken practice at home, try our spoken English guide.
It can be, provided the tutor's role is narrow and agreed. Most Varanasi aspirants already have school and a coaching batch, so the tutor fills the cracks between them. Roles that work:
JEE Main is conducted by NTA in two sessions during the first half of the year; candidates who clear it become eligible for JEE Advanced. NEET UG comes once a year, with half its marks in Biology, which makes slow, careful reading of NCERT Biology essential. Rely on the current information bulletin for every date. Hand your tutor our topic plans for JEE Maths, JEE Physics and JEE Chemistry, plus our NEET Biology approach built on NCERT. Our article weighing coaching against a home tutor for JEE uses Gurugram examples, yet a Varanasi family will find the same trade-offs.
Lessons at home suit primary children, teenagers who drift during video calls, and any subject where you need to watch the working on paper, Maths and Physics numericals above all. Video lessons let you reach a specialist in another city, which matters for IB, IGCSE, ISC options and difficult entrance topics. In Varanasi, these local factors usually decide it:
A common pattern is two or three lessons at home each week, plus a brief video check-in from the same tutor in test weeks. Our home tutor or online tutor article compares the two in depth.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor decides their own rate, and it usually shifts with:
Before agreeing, settle three points: the length of each session, how many sessions a week, and whether a quick online revision before a test counts as part of the arrangement. Spend most on the hardest subject. Rates appear on every shortlisted profile before the demo, and nobody priced above your stated budget is put forward. For a breakdown by class and subject, see the pricing guide; our article on home tuition fees in Varanasi covers local questions.
The profile explains why a tutor was suggested. The free first lesson shows whether they should come back. Watch for:
If you live in a flat or on a guarded campus, give the gate the tutor's name ahead of the demo; for a house, share the lane, a nearby shop and a location pin. Hold lessons in a common room while an adult is home. Tutors who join NXTutors go through an ID check; read how the ID review works. Two more reads: our demo class checklist for parents and our advice on picking a board and a stream.
The CBSE session opens in April. The UP Board and CISCE set their own calendars, so confirm each date on the board's own site. For a family in Varanasi, an exam year usually breaks down like this:
An April start uses the whole year. A start in September or even December is still worthwhile; the lessons just lean harder on past papers and answer-writing.
Share the class, board and medium, the subjects, your locality and a landmark, and the times left over after school and any coaching. You receive two or three suggestions, choose one for the free demo, and make up your mind after it. Pick your locality from the list on this page, look through all tutors, or go straight to a free demo class. Where no home tutor lives near enough yet, an online tutor elsewhere in India can begin immediately.
For a longer walk through the five zones, read our Varanasi home tuition guide, which links every locality from Sigra and Lanka to Shivpur and Sarnath.
