What home tuition costs in Jalandhar

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Example only, not a quote: one subject, one-hour classes, 4 weeks a month. Your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.
Classes a week Classes a month At ₹800 an hour At ₹2,500 an hour
2 8 ₹6,400 a month ₹20,000 a month
3 12 ₹9,600 a month ₹30,000 a month

Why one-to-one home tuition costs more than group coaching

In a coaching batch, one teacher's hour is shared by many students, so each family pays for a part of it. At home the whole hour is your child's: the pace, the questions and the homework check follow one student, and the tutor's travel to your home is part of the working day. A small group of two or three children from the same society usually costs less per child, with less individual attention.

Home tuition in Jalandhar: a parent's guide from Model Town to the cantonment

Jalandhar is a city of planned colonies wrapped around an old core. At its heart sit Jalandhar City Junction and the main bus terminal, with the old bazaars close by, where shops fill the ground floors and families live above them. Spreading out from there are the Improvement Trust colonies on Model Town Road, Nakodar Road and Bastian Road, the two Urban Estates beside the Nakodar railway line, the Garha Road colonies, the cantonment beyond Rama Mandi, and the historic bastis on the far side of the centre. Children across these neighbourhoods study under the Punjab School Education Board, CBSE or CISCE, and a smaller number under IB or IGCSE. For most families the hard part is not finding a tutor's name; it is finding one who teaches the right board, lives near enough to keep a weekly hour, and explains in the language the child actually thinks in.

How does a Jalandhar family get a shortlist of tutors?

You send one request, and it does not need to be long. Write down your child's class and board, the subject or chapter that is going badly, the colony you live in and a chowk or road a newcomer would recognise, the hours that are genuinely free once school and homework are done, and whether you want visits at home, lessons on a screen or a mix. A rough monthly budget keeps the suggestions sensible. In reply you get two or three matched tutors, you can read each one's fee before anybody visits, and the first class with the tutor you choose is a free demo. In Jalandhar, four details shape that shortlist more than anything else:

  • The road your colony hangs off. Families tend to describe home by its road: Model Town Road, Nakodar Road, Garha Road, Bastian Road, Cantonment Road or Hoshiarpur Road. A tutor who already rides that road on weekday evenings is the one most likely to arrive on time all year.
  • The board, matched with the class. A Class 10 student on the Punjab board sits the Matriculation examination with its own textbooks and question papers; a CBSE or ICSE student in the same class prepares for something quite different. We pair board and class together, never one without the other.
  • Punjabi, Hindi or English. Many children read their textbooks in one language and talk through ideas in another. Tell us which mix works, so the tutors you see can teach in it.
  • The phase, block or gali. Several Jalandhar names cover two phases or sound like a colony in another city, and some old lanes are tightly packed. The more exact the address, the smoother the first visit.

Treat the demo as a working lesson on whatever chapter is open this week. If the fit is wrong, tell us, and the next tutor on the list takes a turn. Changing tutor later in the year costs nothing either.

Jalandhar in five zones

Jalandhar matches are drawn from our tutor profiles, and 20 Jalandhar neighbourhoods have a page of their own. Each page lists tutors in the same order: people living in that neighbourhood, then tutors who already travel there, then the rest of its zone, then Jalandhar as a whole, then online tutors from anywhere in India. To keep home visits realistic we sort the city into five zones: Model Town and GTB Nagar, Urban Estate and Garha Road, Cantonment and Rama Mandi, Central Jalandhar and the Old Bastis. These groups are ours, drawn up for tutor travel from the road and scheme names in the city's master plan; they are not municipal wards.

Model Town and GTB Nagar: the Improvement Trust colonies

Model Town is one of Jalandhar's oldest colonies. It was laid out mainly for homes and has since grown a large commercial side, with Model Town Market listed in the master plan among the city's community centres. Two Improvement Trust schemes sit on Model Town Road beside it: Lajpat Nagar and New Jawahar Nagar, both also named as community centres. Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, which almost everyone calls GTB Nagar, is a larger Improvement Trust scheme on Nakodar Road, and Avtar Nagar lies close to both Model Town and GTB Nagar.

Because these five colonies touch one another, a tutor who lives in one can often take a second or third student in the next colony on the same afternoon, which widens your choice more than the size of any single colony suggests. The master plan also notes that parks are concentrated in planned colonies such as Model Town and GTB Nagar, and a weekly Apni Mandi is recorded in Model Town, so on that day ask the tutor to allow a little extra time. For the address, avoid giving "the market" as a meeting point; an inner street, house number and block work far better. Write New Jawahar Nagar in full, since a plain Jawahar Nagar exists in other cities, and add Jalandhar to Lajpat Nagar, which Delhi shares.

Urban Estate and Garha Road: phases, blocks and numbered houses

Urban Estate Phase 1 and Urban Estate Phase 2 were set out by the state's Department of Housing and Urban Development along the Jalandhar–Nakodar railway line, with Phase 2 the bigger of the two. Residents of Phase 1 now deal with the Jalandhar Development Authority on layout questions. On Garha Road, Chhoti Baradari was built in two phases and is listed with the Urban Estates in the master plan's table, while Mota Singh Nagar, recorded as Master Mota Singh Nagar, is an Improvement Trust scheme on the same road.

These are plot-based colonies with blocks and house numbers, and the master plan counts them among the planned areas where the city's parks are concentrated. The one mistake that costs a first visit here is the wrong phase. Put Phase 1 or Phase 2 before the house number for the Urban Estates, and Phase I or Phase II for Chhoti Baradari, then add the block. For the two Garha Road colonies, name Garha Road as the turning. The colonies sit close together, so a tutor based anywhere in this zone can usually reach the others, and the Urban Estate weekly Apni Mandi is worth remembering when you fix the day.

Cantonment and Rama Mandi: the Hoshiarpur Road side

Jalandhar Cantt is the cantonment, governed by its own Jalandhar Cantonment Board and served by Jalandhar Cantonment Junction on the Amritsar–Jalandhar–Ambala line. Rama Mandi, whose chowk sits on Hoshiarpur Road, lies on the stretch towards the cantonment. Defence Colony is an Improvement Trust scheme on Cantonment Road, and Ranjeet Nagar, also written Ranjit Nagar, contains a Municipal Corporation town planning scheme. The master plan's travel survey treats Ranjeet Nagar, Rama Mandi and the Defence Colony side as a single part of the city, running from BSF Chowk to BMC Chowk, and we keep them together for the same reason.

Two practical points matter in this zone. Inside the cantonment, visitor entry rules can apply in some parts, so check what a tutor needs before the demo and pass on their name and phone number in advance. And some families here arrive on a posting partway through the school year, sometimes with a change of school or board. For them an online tutor has a real advantage: the same teacher can carry on after the next move. Rama Mandi covers a wide stretch on both sides of the chowk, so name your street or colony first, and write Defence Colony, Jalandhar so nobody confuses it with the Delhi colony of the same name.

Central Jalandhar: numbered streets near the old bazaars

Central Town is a Municipal Corporation town planning scheme close to the heart of the city, laid out in numbered streets. On Bastian Road, Adarsh Nagar and Vijay Nagar are Improvement Trust schemes, with Shakti Nagar beside them; Adarsh Nagar is named in the master plan as a community centre. Nearby lies the old core, a mixed-use area of bazaars such as Rainak Bazaar, Sheikhan Bazaar and Mai Hiran Gate, where homes sit above shops.

Jalandhar City Junction, the main railway station, and the city's bus terminal are both in the centre, and buses from the terminal run in every direction. That is good news for families here: tutors from almost any part of the city can get to this zone. The difficulty is the last stretch rather than the distance. In Central Town, start the address with the street number; in Adarsh Nagar and Vijay Nagar, add Bastian Road and Jalandhar, because both names repeat across Indian cities. If you live close to the bazaars, choose a meeting point on a wider road for the first visit, and prefer a slot soon after school, before the central roads fill up in the evening.

Old Bastis: close lanes, galis and mohallas

The district administration's history of Jalandhar records that the town once had twelve kots, twelve gates and twelve bastis, of which only a few survive. Four of the oldest are on our list: Basti Sheikh, Basti Danishmandan, Basti Guzan and Basti Bawa Khel, each dating from the seventeenth century by the same account. Today they are dense residential neighbourhoods where addresses are given by gali or mohalla, and the master plan records a weekly Apni Mandi at Basti Sheikh.

Here the address does most of the work. Send the house number, the gali or mohalla name and a landmark people in the basti know, and a map pin before the demo. Where two spellings are in use, such as Danishmandan and Danishmanda or Guzan and Ghuzan, write both. Where Punjabi is spoken at home and the school teaches in English, ask for a tutor who can explain a hard idea in Punjabi or Hindi and then help your child write the answer in English. If you would like a woman tutor, or need a parent to be at home during lessons, say so in the request so the slot can be built around it. Tutors living in one basti can often reach the others, and online lessons add specialists.

Which board does your child follow, and what should the tutor know about it?

Jalandhar families study under three main systems, with a handful on international programmes. We check the board before suggesting anyone, because a tutor who knows one paper well can be a beginner at another.

BoardWhat it coversA fair question for the tutor
Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), Vidya Bhawan, SAS Nagar (Mohali) Public examinations at Middle, Matriculation and Senior Secondary level; the board also prescribes the curriculum and textbooks and affiliates schools. Will you work from the board's textbooks, its question bank and its model test papers, in the medium my child uses?
CBSE NCERT textbooks at the centre, with sample question papers and marking schemes published each year. How will you show my child where the marks go in each step of a written answer?
CISCE: ICSE (Class 10) and ISC (Class 12) A wide range of subjects, long written papers, prescribed English literature and project work. How will you keep every subject moving so revision is not squeezed into the final month?
IB Diploma and Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Coursework and final papers for IB; tiered papers with mark schemes for IGCSE. Can you guide the Internal Assessment or Extended Essay while leaving every word of it to my child?

PSEB came into being through a state law in November 1969, and an amendment in 1987 gave it autonomy. Its website carries the syllabi, a question bank, the structure of each question paper and model test papers, and it notes that its Class 8, 10 and 12 certificates are available on DigiLocker. Read date sheets and notices on pseb.ac.in itself, not from a forwarded message. Our pages on Punjab board tutors in Jalandhar, CBSE home tutors in Jalandhar and ICSE home tutors in Jalandhar go further into each board. IB and IGCSE students usually find the right specialist online.

What changes from primary school to Class 12?

Classes 1 to 8: routine and reading

Younger children need a tutor who is patient but firm about routine: reading aloud every lesson, tables learnt properly, handwriting that improves, and Punjabi alongside English where the school teaches both. By Classes 6 to 8, fractions, early algebra, grammar and basic science ideas start to matter, because each one comes back in Class 9. On the Punjab board, the Middle stage ends in a public examination, so give it the same care.

Classes 9 and 10: the board year

Maths and Science grow heavier in these two years, and Class 10 ends in a board exam for PSEB, CBSE and CISCE students alike: the Matriculation examination on PSEB, or the CBSE and ICSE papers. A tutor's main job is to finish the syllabus in time to practise full papers. Two NCERT-based guides help CBSE families: preparing for Class 10 Maths and Class 10 Science notes.

Classes 11 and 12: specialists by subject

The step into Class 11 surprises most students, whether they take science, commerce or humanities. Calculus, vectors, mechanics, organic reactions or accountancy all arrive in the same year. Choose a specialist for each subject that worries you rather than one tutor for everything. Our Class 12 Physics strategies and calculus and algebra guide suit this stage.

Which subjects can a Jalandhar tutor take on?

Maths and the sciences are where many parents start, especially from Class 9, but tutors on NXTutors cover far more: English, Punjabi, Hindi, Social Science, Computer Science and Informatics Practices, Accountancy, Economics and Business Studies. For primary children, a single tutor can often look after every subject. Each core subject has its own Jalandhar page: maths, science, physics, chemistry, biology and English.

What does good subject teaching look like, whatever the board? In Maths, the tutor traces a wrong answer back to the first step that slipped, even if that step lives in last year's chapter. In Physics, the student describes in plain words what is happening before writing any formula. In Chemistry, numericals, reactions and facts move along together instead of one block at a time; our Class 12 Organic and Inorganic Chemistry guide shows the idea. In English, the tutor listens to the child read, sets short pieces of writing and returns them with comments, and our spoken English guide adds speaking practice. For Computer Science, a shared screen lets tutor and student work on the same code, which is one subject where online lessons often beat home visits.

How can a tutor help with JEE Main and NEET-UG from Jalandhar?

Some Jalandhar students in Classes 11 and 12 keep an entrance exam in view while still facing their school boards. A one-to-one tutor helps most when given a clear brief, rather than being asked to cover everything. Four briefs work well:

  1. Board first, entrance second. Strengthen the school syllabus in the hard subject, then add entrance-style problems once the basics hold.
  2. A weekly doubt session. The student brings the questions they could not solve, and nothing new is taught until those are clear.
  3. Timed practice. A regular test under exam conditions, checked line by line, so speed and accuracy improve together.
  4. One plan for two goals. NCERT underpins both the board papers and much of the entrance syllabus, so revision can be arranged to serve both.

Keep to official facts on the exams themselves. The National Testing Agency conducts JEE Main and NEET-UG and publishes each year's information bulletin and syllabus on nta.ac.in; JEE Advanced, for those who qualify through JEE Main, has its own site at jeeadv.ac.in. In NEET-UG, Biology carries half the marks, which is why slow, careful reading of the NCERT Biology books pays off. Take every date from that year's bulletin. For more, see JEE tutors in Jalandhar, NEET tutors in Jalandhar, our topic plans for JEE Maths and JEE Physics, and the NCERT-first approach to NEET Biology.

Home visits or online lessons: which suits a Jalandhar child?

Neither is better in general; the right choice depends on the child, the subject and the hour. Home visits suit primary children, students who drift during screen time, and subjects where you want every line of working on paper. Online lessons open up tutors from all over India, which matters for IB, IGCSE, ISC electives, Computer Science or advanced entrance problems. A few Jalandhar conditions tip the balance:

  • Neighbouring colonies help. Model Town, GTB Nagar and their neighbours, and the Urban Estates with the Garha Road colonies, sit in tight clusters. A tutor inside your cluster is easier to keep than a slightly stronger one across the city.
  • Entry to the cantonment. Where visitor rules apply, families often keep online lessons for some subjects and a home tutor for one.
  • Close lanes in the bastis and near the bazaars. A tutor on a two-wheeler who knows the lanes is a better match than one who has to search for the door every week.
  • Very hot afternoons and heavy rain. Agree in advance that difficult days switch to a screen instead of being cancelled.

Many families settle on two or three home visits a week with a short online session before a test, all with one tutor. See online tutors for Jalandhar and our home versus online tutoring comparison.

How much do home tutors in Jalandhar charge?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it for every tutor on your shortlist before the demo. Comparing the number alone tells you little, so put the same questions to each tutor:

  • How long is one session, and how many sessions a week would you suggest for this class and board?
  • Do you charge differently for school work and entrance-level work?
  • Does the fee change if I am on the far side of Jalandhar from you?
  • What is your rule if a lesson is cancelled by you or by us?

Put the budget first where the trouble is worst. One strong tutor in the hardest subject usually does more good than the same money split thinly across three. We do not suggest tutors above the budget you give. The pricing guide breaks fees down by class and subject, and our post on home tuition fees in Jalandhar looks at the city itself.

What should you watch for in the free demo?

A profile helps you choose whom to meet; the demo tells you whether to continue. Sit close by, or talk to your child afterwards, and ask yourself:

  • Did the tutor first ask about the board, the school's pace and the last test result?
  • Did they try a few questions to find your child's level before starting to teach?
  • Was the explanation in the language you asked for, Punjabi, Hindi, English or a mix?
  • For PSEB students, did they mention the board's own textbooks and model test papers?
  • Did your child spend most of the hour solving and writing, rather than only listening?
  • Did the tutor say how progress will be shared with you, and how often?
  • Is the agreed slot one the tutor can keep every week from where they live?

Small practical steps help too. In the cantonment, sort out visitor entry before the day; in the Urban Estates, give the phase and block; in the bastis, the gali and a map pin. Keep the lesson in a shared room while an adult is at home. Tutors who join go through an ID check, and the badge on a profile appears only after the ID check is complete; how we check tutors explains each step. Our demo class checklist for parents and guide to choosing a board and stream go further.

When is a good time in the year to start?

Any month works, but the tutor's job changes with the season. Taking CBSE's April start as a reference point:

  • April to the summer break. The most useful window to close last year's gaps before new chapters stack up; morning or evening slots avoid the worst of the heat.
  • The monsoon. Hold a steady weekly rhythm and agree that a stormy day becomes an online lesson.
  • The autumn festival weeks. Expect a few lighter weeks, and plan extra sessions on either side of them.
  • Winter. Finish the syllabus, then turn to full papers and pre-board practice; take exam dates only from the board's own notices.
  • Late winter and spring. Board papers, then the entrance season; keep sessions short, regular and focused on past papers.

Punjab board families should follow the date sheet and notices on PSEB's own site, which need not match the CBSE calendar. Starting early in the session gives the most room; starting late still helps, with more weight on revision and exam technique.

How do you get started in Jalandhar?

It takes three steps. Tell us the class, board and subjects, your colony with its phase, block or gali, and the hours left free after school. Look over the two or three tutors we suggest, with their fees, and pick one for the free demo. Then decide after that lesson. You can also open your own neighbourhood from the list on this page, browse tutor profiles or book a free demo class straight away. If no home tutor lives near enough yet, an online tutor can start without waiting.

For neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood advice, our Jalandhar home tuition guide walks through all five zones, from Model Town and the Urban Estates to Rama Mandi, Central Town and the old bastis.

Elsewhere in Punjab we also cover Ludhiana and Amritsar, and nearby Chandigarh; the complete list is on our cities page.
