How should Class 11 biology time be shared out?

The 2026-27 CBSE curriculum fixes each unit's share of the 70 theory marks. Taken from the largest share down, they suggest where the weeks should go:

• Human Physiology, 18. Draw each organ system, then tell it as a chain of events: food moving through the gut, blood around the heart, a signal along a nerve.
• Diversity of Living Organisms, 15. Build the classification as tables the student fills in from memory.
• Cell: Structure and Function, 15. Each organelle sketched beside what it does; mitosis and meiosis told as a sequence of phases.
• Plant Physiology, 12. The light and dark reactions and the respiration pathway set out as a numbered flow.
• Structural Organisation, 10. Tissue sections from plants and animals, drawn and labelled until they come easily.

Because physiology and the cell reappear in NEET and in Class 12 revision, revisit both briefly before Class 11 ends.

Which Class 12 units carry the most marks?

Genetics and Evolution leads with 20 marks. Reproduction follows with 16, Biology and Human Welfare and Biotechnology have 12 each, and Ecology has 10. So the tutor should set a few genetics crosses in every session once the unit starts, ask for reproduction diagrams with events in the right order, definitions with a named example for human welfare, the tools at each step of a biotechnology process, and careful reading of data and diagrams in ecology. The practical adds 30 marks in each year.

How much of the practical can be prepared at home?

CBSE's 30 practical marks come from experiments, identifying specimens, the record, and a project the student explains at a viva. Microscopes stay at school, but a tutor at home can check that the record is written up as the year goes, rehearse spotting with labelled pictures, and run mock viva questions on the project. ISC students should note that their file is marked separately, so it needs the same care. Either way, a record kept current all year saves a frantic final fortnight.

The Punjab School Education Board prescribes its own curriculum and textbooks and conducts the Senior Secondary examination. How can a tutor make biology terms stick when English is not the home language?

Each biology chapter arrives with a pile of technical words, far more than a physics or chemistry chapter. A child who thinks in Punjabi or Hindi has to learn the idea and then its English name. Four habits help:

1. Word, picture, place. The tutor says the term, explains it in the home language when that helps, and the student writes it on the right part of a sketch.
2. Word parts. A handful of common beginnings and endings, such as those meaning "inside", "outside" or "study of", let the student work a word out instead of memorising it cold.
3. A personal glossary. The term on one side, its meaning in the student's own words on the other, tested aloud at each visit.
4. The paper's language on paper. Talk may move between languages, but anything written for marks is in the language of the exam from the first lesson.

What does NEET ask of a biology student?

The 2026 NEET (UG) information bulletin set 180 compulsory multiple-choice questions for 720 marks. Biology supplied 90 of them, from botany and zoology, with 45 each from physics and chemistry. A correct answer scored plus four and a wrong one minus one, and where candidates tied, biology marks were considered first. The syllabus comes from the National Medical Commission and the pattern is fixed afresh by NTA every year; no 2027 bulletin has appeared yet, so check neet.nta.nic.in.

At home, this means reading NCERT closely, down to the figures and tables, practising objective questions against the clock, and writing down each mistake a mock reveals. How can board biology and NEET share a week?

For a Class 12 student facing both, two home visits a week can carry different jobs. Schools keep their own calendars, so take this as one workable shape:
