Jalandhar Home Tuition Guide: Model Town, Urban Estate, Cantt, Central Jalandhar and the Old Bastis
Jalandhar's homes fall into five groups. Model Town and the colonies around GTB Nagar form one belt; the Urban Estates and the Garha Road colonies form another; the cantonment, Rama Mandi, Defence Colony and Ranjeet Nagar make up the side towards Hoshiarpur Road; Central Town, Adarsh Nagar and Vijay Nagar sit close to the centre; and the old bastis keep their own close lanes. Below, all twenty localities, zone by zone, with address and timing notes.
Finding your way: stations, the bus terminal and the main roads
Most tutors travel by two-wheeler or auto, so a road name and a known landmark beat a long postal address. Jalandhar City Junction, the main railway station, and the city bus terminal are both in the centre of the city, with buses running out in every direction. Jalandhar Cantonment Junction serves the cantonment on the Amritsar–Ambala line. Roads that keep appearing in addresses: Model Town Road, Nakodar Road, Garha Road, Bastian Road, Cantonment Road and Hoshiarpur Road.
| Zone | Roads a tutor will recognise | Typical homes | What to get right on the first visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model Town and GTB Nagar | Model Town Road, Nakodar Road | Houses on inner streets, shops along the main roads | The full colony name, since several are named after colonies in other cities |
| Urban Estate and Garha Road | Garha Road, the Nakodar railway line side | Numbered houses in blocks and phases | The phase, then block and house number |
| Cantonment and Rama Mandi | Hoshiarpur Road, Cantonment Road, BSF Chowk | Cantonment housing and colonies on either side of the chowk | Visitor entry steps, where they apply |
| Central Jalandhar | Bastian Road, the station and bus terminal area | Scheme houses on numbered streets, homes above shops nearer the bazaars | Street number first, and a clear landmark |
| Old Bastis | The basti names themselves | Houses on close lanes, often sharing walls | The gali or mohalla name and a map pin |
Model Town and GTB Nagar
Five colonies sit side by side here, so a tutor who lives in one can often teach in two or three others on the same afternoon. The main roads carry the shops and offices; the inner streets are mostly homes.
Model Town: one of the city's oldest colonies, which began as a residential area and now has a large commercial centre around Model Town Market. Give a turning on an inner street as the meeting point, rather than the market itself, and add the house number and a chowk nearby.
Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar: an Improvement Trust scheme on Nakodar Road that most people shorten to GTB Nagar. Colonies with the same name exist elsewhere, so write the name in full with Jalandhar and Nakodar Road the first time you share the address.
Lajpat Nagar: an Improvement Trust scheme on Model Town Road, listed in the master plan among the city's community centres. Younger children often do well with short, regular classes at a fixed time, and tutors from Model Town or Avtar Nagar can usually fit a slot in.
New Jawahar Nagar: another Model Town Road scheme and another community centre in the master plan. Jawahar Nagar is a different place, so put the word New first and mention Model Town Road. Senior students who need commerce subjects can add an online tutor if no one suitable lives nearby.
Avtar Nagar: a residential colony next to Model Town and GTB Nagar. Its neighbours give a family here a wide pool of nearby tutors. The middle-school years are a good time to close gaps in fractions, grammar and basic science before Class 9 arrives.
Urban Estate and Garha Road
The two Urban Estates were laid out by the state's housing department along the Jalandhar–Nakodar railway line, and the Garha Road colonies sit just beside them. Houses are numbered in blocks and phases, and the master plan notes that many of the city's parks lie inside these colonies.
Urban Estate Phase 1: the smaller of the two estates, now looked after by the Jalandhar Development Authority. Write Phase 1 before the house number. For a PSEB student in the Matriculation year, ask the tutor how they will use the board's model test papers.
Urban Estate Phase 2: the larger estate, with a commercial pocket along the railway line. Lead with Phase 2, then block and house number. Class 12 students here can plan one weekday class and one weekend class around school practicals and pre-board papers.
Mota Singh Nagar: recorded by the Improvement Trust as Master Mota Singh Nagar, on Garha Road. Use Garha Road as the turning-in point. If two children share one tutor, agree a separate block of time for each child, on the same evenings.
Chhoti Baradari: a colony on Garha Road in two phases, also written Choti or Chotti Baradari. Give Phase I or II first, and send a map pin for a newer block, where house numbers do not always run in order.
Cantonment and Rama Mandi
This side of the city runs from BMC Chowk towards the cantonment, and the master plan treats Ranjeet Nagar, Rama Mandi and the Defence Colony side as one part of Jalandhar. Families who arrive on a posting often look here first.
Jalandhar Cantt: the cantonment, governed by the Jalandhar Cantonment Board and served by Jalandhar Cantonment Junction. Visitor entry rules can apply in some parts, so pass the tutor's name and phone number to the gate before the demo. Online lessons can keep going if the family moves again.
Rama Mandi: named after Rama Mandi Chowk on Hoshiarpur Road, and the name covers a wide stretch on either side of it. Lead with your colony or street. A Class 11 or 12 student aiming at NEET-UG can read the official syllabus on nta.ac.in with the tutor.
Defence Colony: an Improvement Trust scheme on Cantonment Road. Delhi has a colony of the same name, so write Defence Colony, Jalandhar, with Cantonment Road. For ICSE or ISC students, ask how the tutor builds long written answers.
Ranjeet Nagar: also spelt Ranjit Nagar, grouped by the master plan with Rama Mandi and Defence Colony. A child who has started avoiding maths often needs a slow first month that goes back to one or two old gaps before moving forward.
Central Jalandhar
These three localities lie near the centre, between the old bazaars and the Bastian Road side. With the main station and the bus terminal close at hand, tutors from most parts of the city can reach them, though the central roads fill up in the evening.
Central Town: a Municipal Corporation town planning scheme laid out in numbered streets. Lead with the street number, then the house number. In the last weeks before an exam, short and frequent revision classes often suit better than two long ones.
Adarsh Nagar: an Improvement Trust colony on Bastian Road, named in the master plan as a community centre. Write Jalandhar and Bastian Road with the name, since other cities have an Adarsh Nagar too. CBSE students can work through sample papers from cbseacademic.nic.in with the tutor.
Vijay Nagar: a Bastian Road scheme near Adarsh Nagar and Shakti Nagar. If your child learns at a different pace, describe what you have noticed in the request, so the tutor can plan shorter steps and more repetition from the first class.
Old Bastis
These four are among the old bastis named in the district administration's history of Jalandhar. The lanes are close together, and several names sound alike, so the gali or mohalla name matters as much as the house number.
Basti Sheikh: known in old records as Basti Sheikh Darvesh. Where Punjabi is the home language and school is in English, ask for a tutor who explains in Punjabi or Hindi and then has your child write the answer in English.
Basti Danishmandan: also written Danishmanda, so give both spellings with the gali name. If you would prefer a female tutor, or need a parent at home during lessons, say so in the request so the shortlist and the slot reflect it.
Basti Guzan: sometimes written Ghuzan. The step from Class 10 to Class 11 physics and maths is steep, so a student here can ask the tutor to rebuild algebra and graphs before vectors and mechanics arrive.
Basti Bawa Khel: also heard as Baba Khel. For computer science or informatics practices in Classes 11 and 12, an online tutor works well, since the screen can be shared while code is written and tested.
Boards and subjects across the city
Schools in Jalandhar are affiliated to the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), to CBSE or to the CISCE, which runs ICSE and ISC. PSEB conducts public examinations at Middle, Matriculation and Senior Secondary level, and its website, pseb.ac.in, publishes syllabi, a question bank and model test papers. For entrance exams, JEE Main and NEET-UG are conducted by the National Testing Agency at nta.ac.in.
For the state board, start with Punjab board tutors in Jalandhar; for the national and CISCE boards, see CBSE home tutors and ICSE and ISC home tutors. Subject pages cover maths and science in the lower classes, and physics, chemistry and biology from Class 11. Reading and writing support sits on the English home tutor page. Senior students preparing for an entrance exam alongside school can look at JEE home tutors in Jalandhar or NEET home tutors in Jalandhar.
Our comparison of CBSE, ICSE, IB and IGCSE sets out how the boards differ.
Home, online or both
Home classes suit younger children and any student who needs someone watching the working on paper. Online classes earn their place when the right specialist lives across the city, the only free hour is late, or another posting is likely. An online tutor for Jalandhar students can be added for one subject without changing the home arrangement. Our post on home tuition fees in Jalandhar covers what to agree before the first paid week, and our home-versus-online comparison weighs the two formats.
How NXTutors can help
Send us your child's class, board and subjects, along with the Jalandhar locality you live in. NXTutors replies with two or three matched tutors: those living closest come first, followed by tutors elsewhere in your zone, then the wider city, then online teachers anywhere in India if the subject calls for it. Every tutor's fee is visible on the shortlist ahead of the demo. The opening class with any tutor costs nothing, and moving to a different tutor later is also free. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after the ID check is complete. The steps are set out on how we verify tutors.
Browse home tutors in Jalandhar, print our checklist for the demo class and request a free demo when you are ready. If you teach and live in the city, open requests from Jalandhar families appear on Jalandhar tuition jobs. Families in other Punjab cities can use our pages for Ludhiana and Amritsar, and for Chandigarh.
Frequently asked questions
Which parts of Jalandhar does this tuition guide cover?
Twenty Jalandhar localities in five zones are covered here: Model Town and GTB Nagar, Urban Estate and Garha Road, Cantonment and Rama Mandi, Central Jalandhar, and the Old Bastis. Every locality has a page of its own, covering the address details a tutor needs and the timing that tends to work, plus the tutors we can suggest there.
What landmark should we give a home tutor in Jalandhar?
Give a Jalandhar tutor the road your colony opens onto, such as Nakodar Road, Garha Road, Bastian Road or Hoshiarpur Road, plus a chowk nearby. Add the phase, block or street number and the house number. In the old bastis, the gali or mohalla name and a map pin save the tutor a search on the first visit.
Can a tutor come into Jalandhar Cantt for home classes?
A tutor can usually teach in Jalandhar Cantt, but visitor entry rules can apply in some parts of the cantonment. Check what your area needs, and pass the tutor's name and phone number to the gate before the demo. If entry is difficult, an online tutor can teach instead and can continue after another posting.
Can we find a PSEB tutor through NXTutors in Jalandhar?
Yes, a PSEB tutor in Jalandhar can be found through NXTutors once your request names the board, the class and the exam language. Tutors who teach the Punjab board and live closest to you are shortlisted first. Where nobody suitable lives nearby, we add online teachers who already work from the PSEB textbooks and model test papers.
What if no home tutor lives near our colony in Jalandhar?
When no tutor lives near your Jalandhar colony, NXTutors looks further out in order: the rest of your zone, other parts of the city, then online teachers across India. A common pattern is one home tutor nearby for maths or science plus an online teacher for a harder subject. Every new tutor still begins with a free demo class.
How does NXTutors check the tutors it suggests in Jalandhar?
Tutors who join NXTutors go through an ID check, and in Jalandhar, as elsewhere, the Verified badge appears only after the ID check is complete. A family request brings two or three matched tutors, each with the fee shown in advance. You meet each one in a free demo, and if the match stops working, switching tutor later is free.
