JEE or NEET from an ICSE, IB or IGCSE School in Gurgaon
Yes, a student from an ICSE/ISC, IB or IGCSE school can prepare for JEE or NEET, and many in Gurgaon (Gurugram) do. The exams are set on their own published syllabuses, not on any one board's textbook, so the task is to map your child's school course against those syllabuses, find the gaps early, and plan Classes 11 and 12 so that school assessments and entrance preparation do not collide. This guide shows how to do that, subject by subject, using only what NTA, the JEE (Advanced) organisers and the National Medical Commission have published.
All exam patterns below are for the 2026 cycle, which is the latest published; check the 2027 bulletins when NTA and the JEE (Advanced) organisers publish them. For the separate question of coaching versus a home tutor, see our guides on JEE preparation in Gurgaon and NEET preparation in Gurgaon.
Eligibility and the board-marks rules
Start with what the official documents say, because this is where hearsay is most common.
| Exam (2026 cycle) | Format | Key published rules |
|---|---|---|
| JEE (Main) Paper 1 | 3-hour computer-based test; 75 questions, 300 marks. Each of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry had 20 MCQs and 5 numerical-value questions. | Marking +4, −1, 0 in both sections. Held in two sessions (January and April 2026); the better NTA score was used. Ties broken by Mathematics, then Physics. |
| JEE (Advanced) | Two compulsory 3-hour papers, each with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; computer-based only, in English and Hindi. | Candidates had to be among the first 2,50,000 successful candidates in JEE (Main) Paper 1, could attempt at most twice in consecutive years, and must have first appeared for Class XII (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. |
| NEET (UG) | 180 compulsory MCQs in 3 hours, pen and paper, single shift: Physics 45, Chemistry 45, Biology 90; 720 marks. | Marking +4, −1, 0. Syllabus notified by the NMC. |
Two points matter for non-CBSE families. First, JEE (Advanced) refers to Class XII "or equivalent", and NTA's bulletins set the qualifying-exam conditions for JEE (Main) and NEET each year. Whether and how your child's qualification counts is answered in the current bulletin, not on a forum, so read the eligibility section of the year your child applies. Second, admission after JEE can carry board-marks conditions set in the counselling and institute rules for that year. We do not quote a figure here because the 2027 documents are not out; check the current year's JoSAA and institute rules, and plan for strong school results anyway.
Why accuracy matters more than volume
With −1 for each wrong answer, guessing is expensive. In a JEE (Main)-style paper, a student who attempts 60 questions and gets 45 right and 15 wrong scores 45 × 4 − 15 × 1 = 165. A student who attempts only 50 and gets 45 right and 5 wrong scores 180 − 5 = 175. In NEET, 130 correct and 20 wrong out of 150 attempted gives 520 − 20 = 500. Students from boards that do not use negative marking need practice in deciding when to leave a question.
ISC students: where the syllabus overlaps and where NCERT adds work
ISC students study the same broad science and maths areas as other Class 11 and 12 students, and many topics will feel familiar. The differences tend to be in emphasis, question style and, in places, coverage. A practical approach:
- Print the official unit lists. The JEE (Main) 2026 syllabus has 14 maths units, 20 physics units and 20 chemistry units; the NEET (UG) syllabus has 20 units each in physics and chemistry and 10 in biology.
- Tick each unit against the ISC syllabus your school follows. Mark it "covered", "partly covered" or "not covered".
- Use NCERT books as the reference for the gaps. Most Indian entrance preparation material assumes a student has worked through NCERT Class 11 and 12 texts, so its language and notation are worth knowing even when the ISC book covers the idea.
- Practise objective questions. ISC papers are largely written answers; JEE and NEET are MCQs and numerical answers under time. That switch is a skill of its own.

IB Diploma students: maths, physics and chemistry gaps for JEE
IB Diploma students face a larger mapping exercise, because the Diploma courses are organised differently and include internal assessments that take real time in Grades 11 and 12.
Maths
The JEE (Main) 2026 maths units are: Sets, Relations and Functions; Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations; Matrices and Determinants; Permutations and Combinations; Binomial Theorem; Sequence and Series; Limit, Continuity and Differentiability; Integral Calculus; Differential Equations; Co-ordinate Geometry; Three Dimensional Geometry; Vector Algebra; Statistics and Probability; and Trigonometry. Compare each with your child's Diploma maths course and level. Pay particular attention to units such as Matrices and Determinants, Co-ordinate Geometry and Three Dimensional Geometry, and to the depth expected in calculus and complex numbers, because these are the areas where course choice and level make the most difference. Our JEE maths tutors in Gurgaon page explains how a tutor builds the missing units.
Physics
The JEE (Main) physics syllabus has 20 units, running from Units and Measurements and Kinematics through Electrostatics, Optics, Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation, Atoms and Nuclei and Electronic Devices to Experimental Skills. The JEE (Advanced) 2026 physics headings are General; Mechanics; Thermal Physics; Electricity and Magnetism; Electromagnetic Waves; Optics; and Modern Physics. Diploma physics students often find the concepts familiar but the problem depth new: multi-step mechanics problems and calculus-based reasoning under time. See JEE physics tutors in Gurgaon.
Chemistry
The JEE (Main) chemistry syllabus has 20 units across physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, ending with Principles Related to Practical Chemistry. Inorganic chemistry, which relies on specific facts and trends, is a common gap for students from any international board, and organic reaction mechanisms need steady practice. See JEE chemistry tutors in Gurgaon.

IB and IGCSE students and NEET biology: NCERT alignment
NEET biology carries 90 of the 180 questions and 360 of the 720 marks, so it decides most results. The NMC's 2026 biology syllabus has 10 units: Diversity in Living World; Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants; Cell Structure and Function; Plant Physiology; Human Physiology; Reproduction; Genetics and Evolution; Biology and Human Welfare; Biotechnology and Its Applications; and Ecology and Environment.
Students coming through IGCSE and then the IB Diploma, or IGCSE and then ISC, often understand biology well but have studied it with different examples, terms and depth. NEET questions frequently turn on precise wording, classification details and diagrams. The practical fix is to read the NCERT Class 11 and 12 biology books line by line alongside the NMC units, and to practise MCQs chapter by chapter. Diversity in Living World and Structural Organisation are units where students from international boards can need the most new reading. See NEET biology tutors in Gurgaon, and for the other two subjects, NEET physics tutors and NEET chemistry tutors in Gurgaon.
A subject-by-subject gap table
Use this as a worksheet. The left column is from the official syllabuses; the right column is what to check in your child's school course.
| Official unit (2026 syllabus) | Exam | What to check in an ISC, IB or post-IGCSE course |
|---|---|---|
| Matrices and Determinants | JEE (Main) | Is it in your course and level at all? If so, are determinants used to solve equations? |
| Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations | JEE (Main) | Depth: roots, modulus-argument form, and links to quadratics. |
| Co-ordinate Geometry | JEE (Main) | Which curves your course covers beyond straight lines; compare with the detailed JEE unit. |
| Integral Calculus; Differential Equations | JEE (Main) | Range of integration techniques, and whether definite integrals and areas are practised under time. |
| Experimental Skills | JEE (Main), NEET | School practicals help; practise the objective question style on them. |
| Inorganic chemistry units | JEE (Main), NEET | Coverage of specific trends, compounds and reactions; NCERT reading usually needed. |
| Diversity in Living World | NEET | Classification detail and terms; compare with NCERT Class 11. |
| Plant Physiology; Human Physiology | NEET | Depth and diagrams against NCERT. |
| Biotechnology and Its Applications | NEET | Specific techniques and examples named in NCERT. |
Timing in Classes 11 and 12 around school assessments
The hardest part for IB and ISC students is not content; it is the calendar. School deadlines, internal assessments, mock exams and entrance practice all pile into the same months.
- Class 11, first term: map the gaps (the table above) and start the biggest missing units. Keep school work on track; good school habits make Class 12 easier.
- Class 11, second half: regular timed objective practice, one subject at a time. Begin NCERT reading for gap units.
- Summer before Class 12: the most valuable window. Close remaining gaps and finish internal-assessment groundwork early, if your school allows, so the autumn is not overloaded.
- Class 12, autumn: full-length practice papers, with school assessments taking priority in deadline weeks.
- Class 12, winter onwards: JEE (Main) in 2026 had a January session, so a JEE student should plan for entrance practice to peak early in the year while school exams are also near. NEET students have a little longer but face a single paper.
Long drives across Gurugram eat into these weeks, so many families use online sessions on school-heavy days and home sessions at weekends. Our JEE home tutors in Gurgaon and NEET home tutors in Gurgaon pages explain how tutors plan around this.
In Gurugram, ISC or the IB Diploma is listed by schools such as Lancers International School (IB Diploma, DLF Phase 5), Scottish High International School (ISC and IB Diploma, Sector 57) and The Shri Ram School (ISC and IB Diploma, Moulsari, DLF City Phase 3); each school sets its own assessment calendar, so ask for it at the start of Class 11.

Frequently asked questions
Can an IB Diploma student take JEE?
The JEE (Advanced) 2026 rules refer to Class XII "or equivalent" with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and NTA's bulletin sets the conditions for JEE (Main). Read the eligibility section of the bulletin for the year your child applies, and confirm how their qualification is treated before relying on it.
Is the ISC syllabus enough for JEE or NEET?
It covers much of the ground, but not in the same style or always to the same depth. Tick the official JEE or NEET units against your school's syllabus, and use NCERT books for the gaps and for terminology.
Do IGCSE students need to read NCERT books for NEET?
Reading NCERT Class 11 and 12 biology alongside the NMC syllabus is the most reliable way to close gaps in terms, classification and diagrams, because NEET questions often turn on precise wording.
Are there board-marks conditions for IIT admission?
Counselling and institute rules can include board-marks conditions, and these are set each year. The 2027 documents are not out yet, so check the current JoSAA and institute rules rather than older summaries.
When should a non-CBSE student start JEE or NEET preparation?
Early in Class 11 is the practical point to map gaps and start missing units. The summer before Class 12 is the most valuable window to close them before school assessments peak.
How is JEE (Main) different from NEET in format?
In 2026, JEE (Main) Paper 1 was a 3-hour computer-based test with MCQs and numerical-value questions across maths, physics and chemistry, in two sessions. NEET (UG) was a single 3-hour pen-and-paper paper of 180 MCQs, half of them biology.
