Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

English in Kanpur classrooms covers a wide range. A UP Board student may lose easy marks on the Hindi-to-English translation question; a CBSE student may know every story yet write literature answers that are too thin; an ICSE student may need sharper composition; and a student of any board may simply want to speak without freezing. Each of these needs a different tutor. Tell NXTutors the board, the class, the weakest skill and your locality, and a shortlist of two or three English tutors follows, every fee visible. The first lesson with the one you pick is a free demo.
| Board | Class 10 | Class 12 | Work from |
|---|---|---|---|
| UP Board (UPMSP) | 70-mark paper plus 30 internal; objective Part A on OMR | One 100-mark paper, grammar and translation included | Board-authorised books, model papers, the board's syllabus |
| CBSE | Language and Literature (184): board 80, school 20 | English Core (301): board 80; 20 for a project plus listening and speaking | The NCERT readers; CBSE's sample papers |
| CISCE | ICSE English Language and English Literature, 80 each, plus internal assessment | ISC (801): a language paper and a literature paper of 80, project work with each | Prescribed texts; specimen papers from CISCE |
| Cambridge; IB | IGCSE 0500 (first language) or 0510/0511 (second language) | IB Language A: analysis of an unseen text, a comparative essay, an individual oral | Past papers; whichever entry the school makes |
The UP Board's 2026-27 Class 10 English syllabus sets a 70-mark paper, with 30 more from internal assessment. Inside the 70, literature takes half, 35 marks: 23 from First Flight (15 prose, 8 poetry) and 12 from Footprints Without Feet. Grammar carries 15, and that includes a 4-mark task translating four Hindi sentences into English. Reading and writing take 10 each.
On the day, according to the model paper, the student gets a reading period and then three hours. Part A is twenty one-mark multiple-choice questions on an OMR sheet; Part B carries the other 50 marks as written answers. Two habits follow: settle each objective answer before marking the sheet, and write literature answers that name the text and stay on the question. The UP Board tutors in Kanpur page covers the board's other subjects.
Class 12 English is a single paper of 100 marks. Literature from Flamingo and Vistas carries 40, and the poetry questions ask about figures of speech. Grammar carries 25, including a 5-mark translation of seven or eight Hindi sentences into English. Writing is worth 20, with an article of about 150 words and a letter, which may be to an editor, a complaint or a business letter. Reading has 15.
The syllabus also describes four unit tests run by the school for remedial teaching; their marks do not count towards the final result, but they show early where a student is slipping. A tutor can use each one as a checkpoint: what went wrong, and what to fix before the next.
Translation from Hindi appears in both UP Board English papers, and it rewards method more than vocabulary. A tutor can build it in four steps:
It also serves a Class 11 student switching from Hindi to English medium; there, translating is the bridge into the new language rather than a question on the paper.
The CBSE Class 10 Language and Literature paper for 2026-27 has three blocks. Reading brings 20 marks through two unseen passages, one discursive and one factual with a chart or data and case-based questions. Writing with grammar brings another 20: grammar items worth 10, then a formal letter and an analytical paragraph describing visual data, 5 each. Literature, from First Flight and Footprints without Feet, carries 40, half the paper. The school adds 20 internal marks, 5 of them for listening and speaking.
With literature worth half the paper, a weekly pair of literature answers, outlined first and then checked for length and relevance, repays more than extra grammar drills. English Core in Class 11 splits its marks as reading 26, grammar with creative writing 23, and literature 31 (Hornbill, Snapshots). Class 12 removes the grammar section and gives literature a bigger share.
In the ISC language paper, students pick one of six composition topics and write 400 to 450 words, then do directed writing and a proposal; literature is examined on its own paper. IGCSE families should confirm the entry, first-language or second-language, because the two are different exams. Fewer Kanpur tutors teach these courses, so online lessons with a specialist are frequently the realistic route; our national English home tutor guide treats each course separately.
Yes. CBSE, ICSE and ISC all give marks for listening and speaking, so speaking practice is part of exam preparation, not a distraction. A simple progression works: the student summarises the day's passage aloud at the end of each lesson, then gives short talks on familiar topics, then handles follow-up questions without notes. If spoken confidence matters for its own sake, for interviews or a move to English-medium study, say so in your request, as it changes the tutor we suggest. Practical ideas are in our spoken English guide for students.
Below Class 6 the goal is fluent reading; exam skills can wait. Children who skip lines, guess words or put books down quickly improve through little and often: decoding unfamiliar words letter by letter, reading aloud to a patient listener, then telling the story back in their own words. A brief, focused session often beats a long one. Where English is rarely spoken at home, a tutor who chats about pictures and stories in plain English, and reaches for Hindi only to unblock a moment, grows listening skills too. Request a tutor who teaches young children, not one used to board classes.
The Orange Line serves part of the city, from Kalyanpur through the centre to Kanpur Central, but tutors generally come by two-wheeler or auto, and the easiest match is often someone from your own side of the city. The Kanpur home tuition page lists every locality.
Arya Nagar is mostly independent houses near busy markets, so the tutor comes to the door; a two-wheeler handles the narrow market lanes better than a car, and a late-afternoon slot avoids the evening crowd. In Civil Lines, north of Mall Road, flats and houses sit side by side; buildings may ask visitors to sign in, and Bada Chauraha is worth avoiding at office hours.
Shastri Nagar grew from a small colony into a full neighbourhood, autos are easy to find, and a tutor from Kakadeo or Pandu Nagar can usually reach most homes; give the lane and a landmark. Pandu Nagar is a settled residential area beside Kakadeo, with Geeta Nagar station in the next locality; a fixed weekly time helps the tutor plan the central roads.
Keshavpuram is a plotted housing scheme where houses carry block and plot numbers and there is usually room for a two-wheeler outside; share both numbers in full. Panki, on the highway towards Delhi, has a railway station with an auto stand, and work traffic peaks at shift changes, so choose a lesson time away from them.
The North-West, Central and West Kanpur zone guides add more practical detail, and the Kanpur home tuition guide compares all five zones. From roughly Class 3, online English works when notebooks are photographed or a document is shared ahead of the lesson; younger readers and students just switching to English medium tend to do better with a tutor in the room.

UP Board Class 10 English gives Kanpur students a 70-mark paper plus 30 internal marks. Literature carries 35, from First Flight and Footprints Without Feet; grammar 15, including a 4-mark translation of four Hindi sentences; reading and writing 10 each. Part A is twenty one-mark questions answered on an OMR sheet.
The UP Board Class 12 English paper Kanpur students sit is one 100-mark paper: literature from Flamingo and Vistas 40, grammar 25, writing 20 and reading 15. Grammar includes a 5-mark translation of seven or eight Hindi sentences, writing covers an article and a letter, and poetry questions ask about figures of speech.
Kanpur UP Board students usually lose translation marks on tense and voice, so a tutor teaches it as method, not vocabulary. Decide tense and voice first, rearrange the Hindi into English word order on paper, and keep a personal list of article and preposition errors. Then practise timed sets of four or eight sentences, corrected straight away.
Literature is the heaviest part of CBSE Class 10 English for a Kanpur student, with 40 of the 80 board marks. Reading has 20, and writing with grammar another 20, split between grammar items, a formal letter and an analytical paragraph. A weekly pair of outlined literature answers, checked for length and relevance, uses lesson time well.
A Kanpur English home tutor can build spoken confidence into every lesson, since CBSE, ICSE and ISC all award marks for listening and speaking. Start with a spoken recap of the passage, then short talks and unscripted questions. If spoken confidence for interviews or a move to English medium is the main goal, say so in your request.
A Kanpur child in Classes 1 to 5 who skips lines or guesses words improves through short, frequent English reading sessions rather than exam work. A tutor decodes unfamiliar words letter by letter, listens to reading aloud, then asks for the story retold. Request a tutor who teaches young children, not one used to board classes.
Home English lessons suit younger Kanpur readers and students in the first months of moving to English medium, where face-to-face correction makes a real difference. From about Class 3, online can work if notebooks are photographed or work is shared ahead. Online is also often the realistic route for ISC, IB or IGCSE English specialists.
An English tutor can visit Keshavpuram or Panki in Kanpur where a suitable match lives within reach. Keshavpuram houses carry block and plot numbers, so share both in full. In Panki, the railway station has an auto stand and work traffic peaks at shift changes, so choose a time away from them.
A good English demo in Kanpur starts with the tutor asking to see a corrected answer script or recent test. Your child should understand throughout, with the Hindi-English mix shifting towards English, and should write, translate or speak for real stretches. The tutor should describe your child's paper structure and map out the coming month.
Tell us the class, board and your area. We share two or three matched tutors, and the first class is a free demo.
