What JEE Main and JEE Advanced ask

The National Testing Agency conducts JEE (Main). In the 2026 information bulletin, Paper 1 was a three-hour test on computer with 75 questions spread equally over mathematics, physics and chemistry, for 300 marks in total. Each subject had 20 multiple-choice items and 5 with a numerical answer; a correct response earned four marks and an incorrect one cost one, in both kinds. Candidates could appear in two sessions, and the better result counted. Those ranked high enough among Paper 1 candidates could then register for JEE (Advanced), which the IITs set as two compulsory three-hour papers, available in English and Hindi. These details change; confirm each year on jeemain.nta.nic.in and jeeadv.ac.in rather than from a coaching handout.

Three decisions to make before you search

Parents often begin by asking for "a JEE tutor for all three subjects". In Kanpur that request usually produces a tired student and a tutor who repeats the batch. Settle three things first.

1. Batch or no batch. If your child attends coaching, the tutor supports it. If not, the tutor owns the syllabus plan and you will need a separate source of full-length timed papers.
2. One subject or two. Most students have a clear weakest subject. Putting all the tutor hours there moves the total further than spreading them thinly.

The strongest single habit a home tutor can build is a written record of every mistake, kept in one notebook or file and reviewed every week. It turns a vague worry ("physics is weak") into a short list of named problems.

After a month the pattern is usually clear. A student losing marks to algebra slips needs timed practice, not new theory; one losing marks to concepts in electrostatics needs that chapter taught again from the start. Ask any tutor at the demo how they would keep this log, and whether they will share it with you.

How a week can look when the batch is across the city

Coming from UP Board, CBSE or ISC

The NTA syllabus follows NCERT content closely. How far your child has to travel to meet it depends on the school board and on the language they think in.

• UP Board Intermediate. Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh sets its own Intermediate papers and publishes its syllabus on upmsp.edu.in. Read the eligibility rules in the current bulletin and brochure before choosing a repeat year; in 2026 JEE (Main) had no age limit and JEE (Advanced) allowed two attempts in consecutive years. 1. Before teaching, did the tutor ask about school, the batch timings and the last test score?
2. Given two questions your child got wrong, did the tutor find the exact step that failed and then let the student finish?
3. Did they explain how negative marking should change when to skip a question?
4. Could your child follow comfortably in the language used, whether Hindi, English or a mix?
5. Can the tutor reach your home at the same time each week from where they live, and offer online on days when they cannot?
