The board, briefly

The board was set up in 1921 at Prayagraj by an act of the United Provinces Legislative Council and held its first examination in 1923. Its headquarters is still in Prayagraj, and it has regional offices at Meerut, Bareilly, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Gorakhpur. Every syllabus, model paper and notice it issues is on upmsp.edu.in, and that site, not a guidebook or a forwarded message, is where a family or tutor should check anything that matters.

High School and Intermediate

The board conducts two examinations. High School comes after ten years of schooling, at the end of Class 10. Intermediate comes after the 10+2 stage, at the end of Class 12. In Intermediate a student follows a group of subjects; the board's syllabus files label accountancy and business studies as part of the commerce group, which is where this page looks first.

Intermediate accountancy (Class 12, 2026-27), unit by unit

The Class 12 accountancy syllabus is in two parts. The first is entirely about partnership firms; the second covers companies and the analysis of their accounts. The unit marks add up to 100.

Two things stand out. Partnership is worth 45 marks, nearly half the paper, and three of its four units turn on the same skills: working out a ratio, valuing goodwill and preparing revaluation and capital accounts. And the last two units, ratios and the cash flow statement, are short in marks but easy to lose if left to the final weeks.

How a tutor should teach UP Board accountancy

• Goodwill first, thoroughly. The syllabus names the average profit, super profit and capitalisation methods. A student who can do all three without notes is ready for most of units 2 and 3.
• One question type per session, done several times. Admission questions, for example, vary mostly in the numbers. Repetition builds speed and accuracy.
• Formats on paper. Journal entries, ledger accounts, the balance sheet and the cash flow statement are marked partly on layout. The tutor should check rulings and headings, not only totals.
• Ratios with their meaning. Each ratio should come with one sentence on what it shows, so the student is not lost when a question asks for interpretation.
• A running list of adjustments that cause errors, such as interest on drawings or past adjustments, kept and revisited every week.

Intermediate business studies (Class 12, 2026-27)

The board's business studies syllabus is also in two parts and totals 100: management principles and functions in the first, business finance and marketing in the second.

Business studies looks easy because there are no calculations, but answers need structure: a definition, the points in order, and an example. A tutor should set and mark short written answers every session, and keep a one-page summary for each unit that the student writes, not copies. Marketing, the unit with the most marks, rewards examples drawn from everyday products the student already knows.

A Class 12 commerce year with a tutor

The order follows the board's own unit order, which also builds skills in sequence: partnership work prepares the student for company accounts, and management principles make the later functions easier to explain. Leave real time at the end for complete papers in both subjects, written by hand and checked for layout.

High School computer: programming, plus a different internal assessment

The board's Class 10 computer syllabus for 2026-27 has a 70-mark written exam and 30 marks of internal assessment at school level. The written part has five units.

The practical list asks students to write and test programs on input and output, conditions, loops, arrays, structures, pointers, files, searching and sorting. A tutor for this subject should be able to sit with the student at a computer and debug real code, not just explain notes. Students also complete two projects from a list that includes drone technology, an e-commerce case study and cyber security.

The four unit tests: when they count and when they do not

The board's syllabus files describe four school-level unit tests for remedial teaching across the year, two multiple-choice and two descriptive. In the accountancy and business studies files, their marks are not included in the result. The High School computer syllabus is different: its 30 internal marks are made of two project-and-file assessments of 10 each and a third 10 in which the total of the four unit tests is converted. So for a Class 10 computer student, every unit test feeds the final marks. A tutor should know this and prepare the student for those tests as seriously as for the board paper.

Hindi terms, English answers

The board publishes its syllabus files in Hindi. Business studies appears there as vyavsay adhyayan, goodwill as khyati and debentures as rinpatra. A Hindi-medium student is at home with these words; an English-medium student, or one moving between the two, needs a tutor who can give both terms side by side so that nothing in the syllabus or a model paper is misread.
