Kanpur families meet ICSE and ISC alongside the UP Board and CBSE, and the CISCE route asks something different of a child. There are more separate papers, the answers are longer, and a share of every major subject is decided by work done during the year rather than in the exam hall. In ISC, some choices made early in Class 11 cannot be undone later. This page explains where the marks come from, which deadlines matter, how to use the council's own feedback on past answers, and how tutors reach six localities in the south and east of the city. It is written by the NXTutors team with Abhinandan Tiwary (Class 10 CBSE and ICSE maths), Aaditya Kashyap (CBSE and ICSE science) and Ajay Vatsyayan (IB, IGCSE and ISC maths).
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations conducts ICSE at the end of Class 10 and ISC at the end of Class 12. Both are written in English, both cover a broad syllabus, and both reward clear, complete written answers. A tutor who has mostly taught for objective tests needs to change style: full working, definitions in exact words, and long answers organised so an examiner can follow them. The Kanpur page describes the boards found across the city.
| Group | What it holds | Exam and internal | Tutor's angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group I | Compulsory subjects | 80 written, 20 internal | Steady work through the year; nothing can be dropped |
| Group II | Two or three subjects chosen from the list, such as maths and the sciences | 80 written, 20 internal | The usual home of maths, physics, chemistry and biology tuition |
| Group III | One subject | 50 written, 50 internal | Half the marks come from coursework, so deadlines matter as much as revision |
In every Group I and Group II subject, 20 marks come from internal assessment, and in Group III it is half. In ICSE mathematics, that internal part comes from at least two assignments, marked by the teacher and by an external examiner. In physics, chemistry and biology it comes from practical work. These are the easiest marks to lose through disorganisation and the easiest to secure with a little supervision.
ICSE mathematics is one written paper of 80 marks. Physics, chemistry and biology are three separate papers of 80 marks each, every one with its own practical component. So a science student sits more papers than in many other boards, and each needs its own revision. For maths, the tutor's focus is complete working and accuracy across the whole syllabus. For the sciences, it is exact definitions, labelled diagrams, balanced equations and numericals with units. Kanpur subject pages: maths, science, physics, chemistry, biology and English.
CISCE publishes Analysis of Pupil Performance reports, which look at how candidates answered past papers and where marks were commonly lost. They are one of the most useful documents a tutor can bring to a session, because they show what examiners actually wanted. A good routine: after a past-paper question is attempted, read the matching comments, compare the student's answer, and rewrite it once. Ask at the demo whether the tutor uses these reports; a tutor who has never opened one is teaching from guesswork.
With many separate papers, the risk in Class 10 is that one or two subjects get all the attention while the rest go cold. Two tutor sessions a week can hold the whole picture together if they are used well.
| Session | First part | Second part |
|---|---|---|
| Early in the week | Maths: the chapter the school is on, with full working | One long answer from a science paper, marked for structure |
| At the weekend | A science chapter from earlier in the year, revisited | Internal assessment: check the next assignment or practical file deadline |
Between sessions the student revises one older chapter a day from a list the tutor keeps, so every subject is seen at least once every few weeks. The ICSE maths and science tutor does not need to teach English or the humanities, but should ask how those subjects are going and flag any that are slipping.
Some students move from ICSE to another board for Classes 11 and 12, for example to line up with an entrance-exam batch; others stay with ISC. Neither choice is automatically right. A student who has done well with long written answers and likes the breadth of the CISCE syllabus may lose little by staying, while one whose entrance batch follows a different chapter order may find two parallel timetables hard. Whatever the choice, the first months of Class 11 are where a tutor helps most: closing gaps between the old syllabus and the new one before the school moves on.
| Rule | What it means at home |
|---|---|
| English plus three to five electives, at most six subjects in all | Choose electives for the stream and the entrance plan, not by habit |
| No change of subjects after 15 September of Class 11 | Use the first weeks of Class 11 to test whether each subject suits the student |
| A Class 12 subject must have been studied in Class 11 | No adding subjects late |
| Promotion needs 35 per cent in four subjects including English, and 75 per cent attendance | Class 11 cannot be treated as a gap year for coaching |
| Practicals are compulsory where a subject has them | Keep lab files current all year |
| Physics cannot be combined with Engineering Science | Check combinations before the deadline |
| Grades from 1 to 9; a pass certificate needs four subjects including English, plus SUPW and Community Service | Do not neglect the non-exam requirements |
ISC mathematics has 80 marks of theory and 20 for a project. See our ISC maths tutor page and the ICSE and ISC maths guide.
| Period | Main work | Tutor's job |
|---|---|---|
| First term of Class 11 | Settle electives; catch up on the jump from Class 10 | Honest feedback on each subject before the deadline for changes |
| Rest of Class 11 | Build the base for Class 12; meet promotion and attendance rules | Weekly practice in long answers; keep practical files current |
| Class 12, first half | Finish the syllabus; projects and practicals | Deadlines on a shared calendar; read project drafts |
| Class 12, second half | Revision in rounds; past papers | Timed papers checked against the council's feedback reports |

ISC electives can be narrow, and the right specialist may not live near you. Online widens the choice for subjects such as ISC maths at the higher end, while a home tutor suits younger ICSE students and anyone who needs their written working watched closely. A common arrangement is a home tutor for maths or the sciences and an online tutor for one specialist elective. See online tutors for Kanpur.

For a Kanpur ICSE Class 10 student, Group I and Group II subjects carry 80 written marks and 20 internal, while Group III splits 50 and 50. In maths the internal part comes from at least two assignments; in physics, chemistry and biology, from practical work. A tutor helps keep those deadlines on a calendar.
An ICSE science student in Kanpur sits physics, chemistry and biology as three separate 80-mark papers, each with its own practical component, plus one 80-mark maths paper. Each needs its own revision. A tutor focuses on exact definitions, labelled diagrams, balanced equations and numericals with units in the sciences, and complete working in maths.
A Kanpur student entering ISC Class 11 takes English plus three to five electives, at most six subjects. Subjects cannot change after 15 September of Class 11, and a Class 12 subject must be studied in Class 11. Promotion needs 35 per cent in four subjects including English and 75 per cent attendance.
A Kanpur ICSE or ISC tutor should use CISCE's Analysis of Pupil Performance reports, which show how candidates answered past papers and where marks were lost. A good routine sets a past-paper question, compares the answer with examiners' comments and has the student rewrite it once. Ask at the demo whether the tutor uses them.
Neither staying with ISC nor changing board after ICSE is automatically right for a Kanpur student. One who writes long answers well may lose little by staying, while an entrance batch with a different chapter order can make two timetables hard. For a fuller comparison, see our CBSE, ICSE, IB or IGCSE guide.
Two tutor sessions a week can cover a Kanpur ICSE Class 10 student if they rotate subjects. Early in the week, take the current maths chapter plus one marked science long answer; at the weekend, revisit an older science chapter and check the next assignment deadline. Between sessions, the student revises one older chapter daily.
Home tuition suits Kanpur ICSE students and ISC maths or science, where written working must be watched. Online widens the choice for a narrow ISC elective with no specialist nearby. Many Kanpur families combine a home tutor for maths or the sciences with an online tutor for one specialist elective.
