ICSE and ISC Maths in Gurgaon: Class 9 to 12 Guide

By Ajay Vatsyayan 10 min read

ICSE maths in Classes 9 and 10 rewards careful, well-set-out working across a wide syllabus. ISC maths in Classes 11 and 12 is a different subject in pace and depth: calculus dominates, the algebra becomes abstract, and a student who scored well in Class 10 can find the first ISC unit tests a shock. For families in Gurgaon (Gurugram), where many students also start JEE preparation in Class 11, the load adds up quickly.

This guide explains the current ICSE and ISC maths papers as CISCE sets them out, what changes between Class 10 and Class 11, the topics where marks are most often lost, how to write working that CISCE examiners reward, a two-year plan for Classes 11 and 12, how ISC maths fits alongside JEE, and what to look for in a tutor.

The papers as CISCE describes them

ICSE Class 10 Mathematics

The CISCE syllabus for the 2027 examination lists one paper of three hours carrying 80 marks, plus internal assessment of 20 marks. Some questions may need mathematical tables (logarithmic and trigonometric). The syllabus covers commercial mathematics (GST, banking, shares and dividends), algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, statistics and probability.

Internal assessment is based on at least two assignments set by the teacher. They are marked independently by the subject teacher (10 marks) and an external examiner (10 marks).

In the 2025 paper, as reported in CISCE's Analysis of Pupil Performance, Section A (40 marks) was compulsory and in Section B (40 marks) candidates attempted any four questions. Always check the latest specimen paper on cisce.org for the current format. Our ICSE Class 10 maths board exam guide goes deeper into Class 10 preparation.

ISC Class 11 and 12 Mathematics

ISC Mathematics (860) has two papers in each year: a three-hour theory paper of 80 marks and project work of 20 marks. It cannot be taken together with ISC Applied Mathematics.

ClassUnits in the theory paper (marks)
Class 11Sets and Functions (18), Algebra (26), Coordinate Geometry (20), Calculus (8), Statistics and Probability (8)
Class 12Relations and Functions (10), Algebra (10), Calculus (35), Vector Algebra (5), Three-Dimensional Geometry (6), Linear Programming (5), Probability (9)

An important change for Class 12. Earlier ISC papers split Class 12 into Section A (65 marks, compulsory) and a choice of Section B or Section C (15 marks each). The 2026 syllabus still used that split. The syllabuses CISCE has published for the 2027 and 2028 examinations list seven units in a single 80-mark paper, with no Section B or C option. In practice, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability are now part of every candidate's paper, and linear regression, which sat in the old Section C, does not appear in the unit list. Check the specimen paper for your child's exam year when CISCE releases it.

Project work. Each year students complete two projects, each marked out of 10: overall format 1, content 4, findings 2 and a viva-voce 3. In Class 12, projects are assessed by the subject teacher and a visiting examiner, and the viva is conducted by the visiting examiner only, based on the project. The viva is where students who have leaned too heavily on outside help get found out, so the project must be your child's own work.

The jump from ICSE 10 to ISC 11

Three things change at once:

  • Abstraction. Sets, functions and relations ask students to reason about objects, not just calculate. Students who learned ICSE maths as a set of methods find this harder than the arithmetic.
  • Trigonometry and algebra depth. Class 11 trigonometry, permutations and combinations, the binomial theorem and conic sections are heavy on technique. CISCE's examiners specifically advise Class 12 students to revise Class 11 trigonometry, calculus, probability and permutations and combinations, because Class 12 builds on them.
  • Pace. The syllabus moves faster, and in Gurgaon many students add JEE coaching at the same time, so there is less time for practice.

The practical advice: do not treat Class 11 as a warm-up year. Almost every Class 12 calculus problem relies on Class 11 functions, trigonometry and limits.

Where marks are most often lost

CISCE publishes an Analysis of Pupil Performance after each exam, with examiners' comments. The October 2025 reports are worth reading with your child. Among other points, they list:

ICSE Class 10, topics found difficult: GST (SGST and CGST), recurring deposit maturity value, shares, number-line solutions of inequations, quadratic equations, matrix multiplication, AP and GP terms and sums, equations of a line, similar triangles, locus and circle constructions, heights and distances, and reading values from an ogive. Examiners also noted that fewer candidates attempted the questions with geometry sub-parts.

ISC Class 12, topics found difficult: properties of matrices and determinants, applications of derivatives, indefinite and definite integration, differential equations, Bayes' theorem, applications of integration and linear programming. Confusions included symmetric versus skew-symmetric matrices, "increasing" versus "strictly increasing", and choosing the right definite-integral property or the right type of differential equation.

From a tutor's point of view, these share a pattern: students know the formula but misread what the question is asking. Practice should include deciding the method before writing, not only executing it.

How to write working CISCE examiners reward

Many of these points come straight from the examiners' suggestions in CISCE's reports.

  • Show every step, including rough work, on the same page as the answer. Marks are given for method, not just the final line.
  • Give reasons in geometry. State the theorem or property for each step ("angles in the same segment", "tangent is perpendicular to radius").
  • Leave construction arcs visible. Erased construction lines cost marks.
  • Round only at the end, and to the accuracy asked for.
  • Watch the sign when multiplying or dividing an inequation by a negative number.
  • Use the scale given in graph questions, on graph paper.
  • In ISC calculus, write the rule you are using, state conditions (for example, where a function is increasing), and give final answers with correct notation, including the constant of integration.
  • Use the reading time to choose questions and underline key words.

A two-year plan for ISC Classes 11 and 12

PeriodFocus
Class 11, April to SeptemberSets, relations and functions; trigonometry thoroughly; complex numbers and quadratic equations. Build a formula notebook from day one.
Class 11, October to FebruaryPermutations and combinations, binomial theorem, sequences, coordinate geometry and conics, limits and derivatives, statistics and probability. Start the first project early.
Summer before Class 12Revise Class 11 trigonometry, functions and limits; begin matrices, determinants and inverse trigonometric functions.
Class 12, April to AugustCalculus: continuity, differentiability, derivatives and their applications, integration. This unit is 35 of the 80 marks, so give it the most time.
Class 12, September to NovemberDifferential equations, applications of integrals, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability. Finish the projects.
Class 12, December to examTimed full papers, school pre-boards, the specimen paper, and targeted revision of weak units from the examiners' reports.

Most schools start the session in April, so this plan follows the school year. Adjust it to your school's order of topics.

ISC maths alongside JEE

ISC maths and JEE maths overlap heavily in calculus, algebra, coordinate geometry, vectors and three-dimensional geometry, and probability. The difference is style: JEE rewards speed and multi-concept problem-solving; ISC rewards complete written working and presentation. A student preparing for both needs to practise both styles, not assume one covers the other.

  • Use coaching material for depth, but keep writing full ISC-style solutions every week.
  • Do not neglect ISC-only areas and the project work; they carry real marks.
  • From December of Class 12, give the board papers their own dedicated weeks.

Our JEE maths topic-wise preparation guide covers the entrance side, and our guide to JEE preparation in Gurgaon: coaching or a home tutor helps with the bigger decision. For physics, our ISC Class 12 Physics tips follow the same board approach.

Choosing an ICSE or ISC maths tutor

Ask these questions before you commit:

  1. Have you taught the current CISCE syllabus for my child's exam year, including the change to the Class 12 paper?
  2. How do you use CISCE specimen papers and the Analysis of Pupil Performance?
  3. How do you correct presentation and working, not just answers?
  4. If my child is doing JEE too, how will you balance board-style and entrance-style practice?
  5. How do you help with project work while keeping it my child's own?

A tutor who asks to see your child's recent test papers before planning is usually a good sign. Use the demo to watch how they handle a mistake.

On fees: Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Class, the tutor's experience, travel, frequency and home versus online all affect the fee.

Frequently asked questions

How much harder is ISC maths than ICSE maths?

ISC maths is a bigger step up from ICSE maths than most students expect, in both pace and depth. Class 11 brings abstract topics such as sets, functions and relations and moves faster, and in Class 12 calculus alone carries 35 of the 80 theory marks. Students who keep Class 11 trigonometry, functions and limits strong usually manage the step well.

Does ISC Class 12 maths still have a Section B or C choice?

ISC Class 12 maths has no Section B or C choice in the syllabuses CISCE has published for the 2027 and 2028 examinations. They list seven compulsory units in one 80-mark paper, while the 2026 syllabus still had the split. Vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability are now in every paper, and linear regression is not in the unit list.

How are ISC maths projects marked?

ISC maths projects are marked as two projects each year, each out of 10: overall format 1, content 4, findings 2 and a viva-voce 3. In Class 12, the subject teacher and a visiting examiner assess the projects, and the viva is conducted by the visiting examiner only, based on the project. That is why the project must be your child's own work.

Can ISC maths and JEE be prepared together?

Yes, ISC maths and JEE maths can be prepared together, since they overlap heavily in calculus, algebra, coordinate geometry, vectors, three-dimensional geometry and probability. The difference is style: JEE rewards speed, while ISC rewards complete written working. Keep writing full ISC-style solutions every week, keep up the project work, and give board papers their own weeks from December of Class 12.

When should my child start ISC maths tuition?

ISC maths tuition is most useful when it starts in the first term of Class 11, while functions and trigonometry are being built. Almost every Class 12 calculus problem relies on Class 11 functions, trigonometry and limits, and CISCE's examiners advise Class 12 students to revise Class 11 work. Starting in Class 12 is possible, but gaps from Class 11 slow everything down.

Which ICSE Class 10 maths topics do students find difficult?

ICSE Class 10 maths topics that CISCE's examiners reported as difficult in October 2025 include GST, recurring deposits, shares, quadratic equations and matrix multiplication. Others were AP and GP, similar triangles, locus and circle constructions, heights and distances, and reading an ogive. The common pattern is that students know the formula but misread the question, so practise deciding the method before writing.

How should students set out working in CISCE maths papers?

In CISCE maths papers, students should show every step, including rough work, on the same page as the answer, because marks are given for method. Give a reason for each geometry step, leave construction arcs visible, round only at the end and use the scale given in graph questions. In ISC calculus, name the rule used, state conditions and include the constant of integration.
