IB or IGCSE in Gurgaon: when does your child need a tutor, and what should you ask one?

By Ajay Vatsyayan 10 min read

Many families in Gurgaon (Gurugram) come to the IB or IGCSE after years in CBSE or ICSE, and quickly find that the usual approach to tuition does not fit. The papers are worded differently, some of the marks come from coursework, calculators are used in new ways, and a tutor who is excellent for board exams may never have marked an IB exploration or an IGCSE Extended paper.

This guide explains how the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP), and the Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE, are structured, what changes for your child and for a tutor, how subject levels and tiers work, where a tutor can and cannot help with coursework, when tutoring is worth starting, what to ask a prospective tutor, and whether home or online classes make more sense in Gurgaon. To compare tutors and fees, see the IB tutor in Gurgaon page.

How the pathways work

IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The IB describes the MYP as a five-year programme for students aged 11 to 16, although schools can run shorter versions. It covers eight subject groups and is designed to lead into the Diploma Programme. Assessment is criteria-based: in MYP mathematics, for example, work is judged against four criteria (knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts), each on a scale of levels rather than a simple percentage. Schools can offer MYP maths at a standard or an extended level.

IB Diploma Programme (DP)

The DP is a two-year course for students aged roughly 16 to 19. Students take six subjects, normally three (and not more than four) at Higher Level (HL) and the rest at Standard Level (SL). The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for an HL subject and 150 for SL. Alongside the subjects sit three compulsory core elements: the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

Each subject is graded from 1 to 7. The EE and TOK together can add up to three points, which is where the familiar maximum of 45 comes from. The IB's passing criteria include at least 24 points overall, alongside other conditions.

Cambridge IGCSE

Cambridge IGCSE is usually taken at the end of Grade 10. Many subjects are tiered. In Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580), for exams in 2025–2027, Core candidates sit Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator) and can achieve grades C to G. Extended candidates sit Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator) and can achieve A* to E. A scientific calculator is used on the calculator papers; graphical calculators are not permitted. Schools can enter candidates on the A*–G scale or the 9–1 scale. In India, exams are available in March as well as the June and November series.

Edexcel International GCSE

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) is graded 9 to 1 and has two tiers. Foundation Tier targets grades 5 to 1; Higher Tier targets grades 9 to 4 (with a grade 3 allowed). Each tier has two papers of two hours and 100 marks, each worth 50%, and a calculator may be used in both. Exams are available in January and June.

What is different from CBSE and ICSE

These differences matter for your child, and they also tell you what a tutor must be good at.

Command terms

IB and Cambridge questions use specific instruction words (the IB calls them command terms) such as "show that", "hence", "justify", "sketch", "estimate" and "interpret". Each asks for something different. "Hence" means use the previous result; "show that" means every step must be visible because the answer is already given. Students used to board exams often lose marks by answering a "justify" question with a bare number. A good tutor trains your child to read the command term first.

Internal assessment

In the DP, every subject has an internally assessed component. In maths it is a written exploration; in the sciences it is an investigation. It is marked by the teacher against published criteria and then checked by the IB. This is real, weighted work, not a formality, and it has deadlines in the school calendar that can collide with tests.

Calculators and graphic display calculators

CBSE and ICSE students are used to working without a calculator. IB DP maths includes calculator papers where a GDC is expected (in Applications and Interpretation, every paper), so students need to be fluent with a graphic display calculator (GDC): graphing, finding intersections, solving equations, and statistics functions. Cambridge IGCSE maths has both non-calculator and calculator papers, while Edexcel allows a calculator in both papers. A tutor should know exactly which model your child's school uses and practise on it.

Criteria-based marking

Instead of "correct answer, full marks", IB and IGCSE mark schemes split credit into method, accuracy and reasoning. Correct working with a slip can still earn most of the marks; a correct answer with no working may earn very little. Practising with official mark schemes is essential, and it is something a tutor should do with your child regularly.

Choosing subjects, levels and tiers

IB SL or HL. HL goes deeper and wider, and takes significantly more time. Choose HL in subjects your child enjoys and will need for their intended university course. Universities set their own subject requirements, so check the admissions pages for the courses your child is considering before choosing maths or a science at SL.

IB maths: AA or AI. Analysis and Approaches focuses on algebra, functions, calculus and proof; Applications and Interpretation leans towards modelling, statistics and technology. We explain the choice in detail in our guide to IB Maths AA vs AI, SL vs HL.

Cambridge Core or Extended. The tier is usually decided by the school in Grade 10 based on performance. Core caps the grade at C, so a student aiming for A or A* must be on Extended. Our IGCSE Core vs Extended maths guide covers the decision.

Edexcel Foundation or Higher. Foundation caps the grade at 5. Students with any plans for maths or science in Grade 11 should normally aim for Higher.

IA and Extended Essay support: where the line is

The IB is clear that coursework must be the student's own work, with any help and any sources acknowledged. Its academic integrity policy treats passing off someone else's work, or collusion, as misconduct, and schools take this seriously. A tutor can support the IA and EE, but only in the right way.

A tutor may:

  • Teach the maths or science your child needs to understand their chosen topic.
  • Explain the assessment criteria and what each one rewards.
  • Ask questions that help your child narrow a topic or spot a weak argument.
  • Teach general skills such as referencing, labelling graphs and writing clear conclusions.

A tutor must not:

  • Choose the topic or research question for your child.
  • Write, rewrite or correct any part of the draft.
  • Do the calculations, data processing or analysis.
  • Give line-by-line feedback on a draft; that is the school supervisor's role, within the IB's rules.

If a tutor offers to "fix" an IA or EE, walk away. The risk falls entirely on your child. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research essay, and it is supervised by the school; your child's supervisor should know if outside help is being used. Our IB Physics SL/HL, IA and EE guide gives subject-specific pointers.

When to get a tutor

The Grade 9–10 transition. Students joining IGCSE from CBSE or ICSE often find the content familiar but the questions unfamiliar. A few months of targeted work on command terms, calculator papers and past-paper style usually settles this.

DP Year 1. This is the most common point where students struggle, especially in HL maths and physics. The step up from Grade 10 is steep, internal assessment work starts, and gaps from earlier years show up fast. Starting support early in DP1, rather than after the first set of predicted grades, gives your child time to recover.

Before predicted grades and final exams. Short, focused support for past-paper practice helps, but it works best when the foundations are already secure.

Signs to act on: scores falling after the first unit tests, avoiding calculator papers, repeatedly losing marks for "not enough working", or anxiety about the IA.

What to ask a prospective IB or IGCSE tutor

  1. Which exact course and level do you teach: for example IB Maths AA HL, or Cambridge 0580 Extended?
  2. Have you taught the current syllabus, and are you aware of any upcoming revisions?
  3. How do you use official past papers and mark schemes?
  4. Which GDC or calculator do you teach on, and will you practise with my child's model?
  5. How do you support the IA or EE without crossing the academic integrity line?
  6. How will you report progress, and how often?
  7. How would you plan the next term around my child's school calendar?

Listen for specific answers. "I teach all boards" is not a good sign for IB HL. Use the free demo to test this.

Home or online in Gurgaon

Many IB and IGCSE families live along Golf Course Road and Golf Course Extension Road, where most homes are in gated high-rise societies with visitor-entry routines, and evening traffic around school-run and office hours can make a tutor's arrival unpredictable. Home tuition works well when a strong tutor lives nearby and a fixed weekly slot suits both sides.

Tutors who know a specific IB or IGCSE course in depth are fewer in any one area, so online classes widen the choice considerably, especially for HL subjects. For maths and physics, online works only if the tutor can see your child's working through a tablet, a shared whiteboard or a camera over the notebook. Many families use a mix: home classes during term, online sessions around exams. Our area guides for Golf Course Road and DLF and Golf Course Extension and SPR add local detail.

On fees: across NXTutors most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. The course, level, the tutor's experience, travel and how often classes run all move the fee.

How NXTutors can help

Frequently asked questions

Can a CBSE or ICSE tutor teach IB or IGCSE?

Some can, especially for content that overlaps. But IB and IGCSE papers reward command terms, calculator skills and method marks in specific ways, and the IB has internal assessment. Ask what exact course and level the tutor has taught recently.

Is it allowed for a tutor to help with the IB IA or Extended Essay?

A tutor can teach the underlying subject, explain the criteria and ask questions that sharpen your child's thinking. A tutor must not choose the topic, write or edit the work, or do the analysis. The work must be your child's own, and any help should be acknowledged as the school requires.

When should an IB student start tutoring?

If your child is finding HL maths or physics hard, early in DP Year 1 is usually the right time. Waiting until predicted grades leaves much less room to recover.

Should my child take IGCSE Core or Extended maths?

For Cambridge 0580, Core leads to grades C to G and Extended to A* to E. A student aiming for a strong grade, or planning maths in Grade 11 and 12, should normally be on Extended. The school usually makes the final entry decision.

Is online tutoring good enough for IB HL subjects?

Often, yes, and it widens your choice of tutors who know the course well. It works best when the tutor can see your child's written working live and the student concentrates well on a screen.
