Cambridge IGCSE Physics looks friendly on paper: six topics, no calculus, calculators allowed throughout. Students who drop marks usually do so in three places: the gap between Core and Extended content, the practical paper, and the precise way Cambridge wants answers phrased. A good IGCSE physics tutor works on all three from the start. This guide sets out the current 0625 syllabus and papers, the experimental skills that carry a fifth of the grade, how to use past papers properly, and how IGCSE physics tuition works for families across Gurugram.
The 0625 syllabus for examinations in 2026, 2027 and 2028 keeps the familiar structure. Cambridge's latest version (December 2025) states there are no significant changes that affect teaching. Every candidate sits three papers: a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper, and one practical paper.
| Paper | Who sits it | Format | Time and marks | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Multiple Choice (Core) | Core | 40 four-option questions | 45 min, 40 marks | 30% |
| Paper 2: Multiple Choice (Extended) | Extended | 40 four-option questions | 45 min, 40 marks | 30% |
| Paper 3: Theory (Core) | Core | Short-answer and structured questions | 1 h 15 min, 80 marks | 50% |
| Paper 4: Theory (Extended) | Extended | Short-answer and structured questions | 1 h 15 min, 80 marks | 50% |
| Paper 5: Practical Test | Either tier (school chooses 5 or 6) | Experiments in a laboratory | 1 h 15 min, 40 marks | 20% |
| Paper 6: Alternative to Practical | Either tier | Written paper on experimental skills; no experiments | 1 h, 40 marks | 20% |
Across the qualification, Cambridge weights knowledge with understanding at 50%, handling information and problem-solving at 30%, and experimental skills and investigations at 20%. Calculators may be used in all parts of the examination. That last point surprises some parents: IGCSE physics is not a mental-arithmetic test, but it is a test of setting out a calculation clearly, with units, so that method marks are safe even if the final number slips.
Core candidates (Papers 1, 3 and 5 or 6) can achieve grades C to G. Extended candidates (Papers 2, 4 and 5 or 6) can achieve A* to G. Cambridge's guidance is that students expected to reach grade C or above should be entered for Extended. In practice the school usually decides the tier during Grade 9 or early Grade 10.
The Supplement content adds the harder material in every topic: more equations to recall and use, more quantitative reasoning, and multi-step Paper 4 questions. Tuition should cover Supplement points explicitly, not assume they follow from the Core.
It can be done, but it needs a plan: a list of every Supplement learning outcome, taught and tested topic by topic, with Paper 2 and 4 past papers as evidence for the school. Start at least two terms before entries close.
| Topic | Typical sticking points |
|---|---|
| 1. Motion, forces and energy | Reading speed-time graphs, momentum and impulse (Extended), energy efficiency calculations, pressure in liquids |
| 2. Thermal physics | Explaining with particle models, specific heat capacity calculations, precise wording on conduction and convection |
| 3. Waves | Ray diagrams for lenses, refraction and critical angle, the electromagnetic spectrum and its uses |
| 4. Electricity and magnetism | Series and parallel circuits, potential dividers, electromagnetic induction and transformers |
| 5. Nuclear physics | Half-life from data, balancing decay equations, safety precautions |
| 6. Space physics | Orbits, the life cycle of stars, and Extended content on the expanding universe; often left too late in school schemes |
Throughout the syllabus, learning outcomes say "recall and use the equation". Students are expected to know these equations, so a tutor should build a single equation list from the syllabus early and test it regularly, with units, rather than leaving it to the final month.
Your child's school chooses whether candidates sit the Practical Test (Paper 5) or the Alternative to Practical (Paper 6). Cambridge is clear that both require the same experimental skills, the same experimental contexts, and test the same assessment objective. Paper 6 simply asks about experiments on paper rather than having students carry them out. Students who have done little hands-on work often find Paper 6 hardest, because they have to imagine apparatus they have never handled.
The syllabus lists the contexts students should be familiar with, including:
And the skills that earn the marks: identifying independent and dependent variables, explaining how variables are controlled, choosing a sensible range and number of readings, recording results in a table with units, plotting a graph with a good scale, and evaluating the method. A tutor cannot run a physics lab at home, but can draw the apparatus with the student, work through real Paper 6 questions, and rehearse the planning question until it is routine. Many simple experiments, such as a spring and weights or a pendulum and a stopwatch, are safe to do at home and make the paper far less abstract.
The multiple-choice paper is 30% of the grade, and it rewards a different skill from the theory paper: quick, accurate reasoning with no partial credit. Forty questions in the paper's official time leaves little room to linger on any one item.
The 0625 syllabus asks students to "recall and use" P = IV and E = IVt in the Core, and, in the Supplement, the specific heat capacity equation c = ΔE ÷ (mΔθ). Cambridge likes to chain such equations in one structured question, so a tutor practises the chain, not each formula alone.
Question. A kettle connected to a 230 V supply draws a current of 8.0 A. (a) Calculate its power. (b) Calculate the energy it transfers in 60 s. (c) This energy heats 0.50 kg of water. The specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J/(kg °C). Assuming no energy is lost, calculate the rise in temperature.
Where marks go: in (b), students who substitute t = 1 instead of 60 s get 1840 J, a sixty-fold slip that a unit check catches. In (c), entering the mass as 500 (grams) instead of 0.50 kg gives a rise of about 0.05 °C, which should look wrong at once for a kettle. The habit a tutor builds is the same each time: equation, substitution with units, answer with a unit and a sensible number of significant figures. A follow-up Extended question often asks why the real rise is smaller; the answer is energy transferred to the kettle and the surroundings, which links straight back to efficiency in topic 1.
| Mistake | Habit that fixes it |
|---|---|
| Answer given without units, or with the wrong prefix (mA, kJ, cm) | Convert to SI units before substituting; write the unit with every answer |
| Equation written without the working shown | Equation, substitution, answer, on three lines, every time |
| Using "weight" and "mass" or "heat" and "temperature" interchangeably | A glossary of key terms, tested weekly |
| Graph axes without labels or units; awkward scales | A checklist for every graph: labels, units, scale, plotted points, a smooth trend line through them |
| Explanations that describe but do not explain | Answering "because…" and linking to particles, forces or energy |
| Ray diagrams freehand | Ruler and sharp pencil; arrows on every ray |
Students joining mid-way, or moving from CBSE or ICSE into an IGCSE school, usually need a few weeks of catch-up on topics the new class has already covered; tell us the school's scheme and we look for a tutor who can start there. Going the other way, a student leaving IGCSE for a CBSE Class 10 should read our Class 10 science home tutor in Gurgaon page, since CBSE examines physics, chemistry and biology together in one science paper.
Families looking for IGCSE physics help in Gurugram often mention the Cambridge pattern followed at schools such as Lancers International School (DLF Phase 5), Scottish High International School (Sector 57), Shiv Nadar School (DLF City Phase 1) and The Shri Ram School (DLF City Phase 3). NXTutors has no tie-up with any school; tutors are matched by board, syllabus and tier. Each school sets its own scheme of work and chooses between Paper 5 and Paper 6, so tell us what your child's school uses. Our guide to Gurgaon schools by board explains how CBSE, ICSE, IB and IGCSE differ for tuition.
Many Gurugram IGCSE students move on to the IB Diploma; some move to CBSE for Class 11 to prepare for JEE or NEET. Extended IGCSE physics is a good base for IB Physics; see our IB physics tutor in Gurgaon page. Students moving to CBSE should expect a steeper mathematical treatment, with vectors, calculus-based kinematics and derivations; our Class 11 physics page explains the jump.
Most IGCSE physics requests come from families along Golf Course Extension Road, in the DLF Phase 5 and Phase 4 area, and from newer societies such as Emaar Palm Drive and M3M Urbana, with others from Sector 56, Sector 57 and South City 2. IGCSE-experienced physics tutors are fewer than CBSE tutors, so online or hybrid sessions widen the choice. See all localities on our page of home tutors in Gurgaon.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo. One or two sessions a week is typical, rising before the exam series. See our pricing guide.
Tell us the grade, Core or Extended, whether the school uses Paper 5 or 6, the exam series, your locality and your slots. We shortlist two or three IGCSE physics tutors; you choose one for a free demo class, and switching is free. For physics tuition more broadly, see our physics home tutor page and the physics home tutor in Gurgaon page; for IGCSE chemistry, see IB and IGCSE chemistry in Gurgaon; for biology, see the IGCSE biology tutor in Gurgaon page. If your child's school enters Combined Science (0653) or Co-ordinated Sciences (0654) rather than separate Physics, the IGCSE science tutor in Gurgaon page covers those routes.
Parents often tell us their child's school so the tutor can follow the same board and books. These Gurugram schools follow Cambridge IGCSE, as shown on each school's own site or its board's directory, with the sector each is in. NXTutors has no tie-up with any school; tutors are matched by board and syllabus, and the list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Gurgaon students on Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 sit three papers for 2026 to 2028: multiple choice (30%), theory (50%) and one practical paper (20%). Core takes Papers 1 and 3; Extended takes Papers 2 and 4. The school chooses Paper 5 Practical Test or Paper 6 Alternative to Practical, and calculators are allowed throughout.
A Gurgaon tutor can often help a child move from Core to Extended IGCSE physics if you start early. Core caps the grade at C, while Extended opens A* to G. The tutor teaches and tests every Supplement learning outcome and builds Paper 2 and 4 evidence for the school; begin at least two terms before entries close.
A Gurgaon home tutor prepares a child for IGCSE physics Paper 5 or 6 by drawing apparatus with them and working through real practical questions. Both papers test the same experimental skills, worth 20% of the grade. Planning, recording, graphing and evaluating are rehearsed, and safe home experiments such as springs or a pendulum help.
Gurgaon IGCSE physics students usually lose marks on units and prefixes, calculations without working, and graphs without labelled axes. Mixing weight with mass or heat with temperature costs marks too. Writing the equation, substitution with units and answer on three lines every time keeps method marks safe even if the final number slips.
Gurgaon students on IGCSE physics often find electricity and magnetism and waves hardest: potential dividers, induction, transformers, lens ray diagrams and critical angle. Momentum in Extended and half-life from data also trip students up. Space physics is short but often left too late in school schemes, so a tutor should give it proper attention.
Gurgaon students should tackle the IGCSE physics multiple-choice paper by working each calculation out before looking at the options, since distractors match common slips. It is 30% of the grade with no partial credit. Eliminating options that break known rules, checking powers of ten and logging every wrong answer by topic all help.
Online IGCSE physics tuition is effective for Gurugram families, especially for past-paper practice, multiple-choice technique and marking against Cambridge mark schemes. Home sessions help with drawing apparatus and ray diagrams. IGCSE-experienced physics tutors are fewer than CBSE tutors, so many families combine both formats with the same tutor.
Yes, Gurgaon families can ask for a woman IGCSE physics tutor, and we shortlist women tutors where available. Mention it when you share the tier and slots. For IGCSE physics the pool is smaller than for CBSE, so allowing some online sessions can widen the choice.
