Class 9 science changed for CBSE students in 2026-27. There is a new NCERT book, Exploration, a reorganised syllabus, and for the first time an optional Science Advanced level with its own extra paper. ICSE students study Physics, Chemistry and Biology as three subjects, IGCSE students begin a Cambridge science course, and IB MYP students work to criteria. A Class 9 science tutor in Gurugram helps most from the first term: mapping the new book, building numericals and diagrams before the half-yearly, and helping the family decide on Science Advanced with the facts in front of them. This guide covers each board, the worked problems that decide marks, and a term-by-term plan. The author is Aaditya Kashyap, who tutors CBSE and ICSE science through NXTutors.
NCERT's new Class 9 science textbook is Exploration (Hindi edition: Anveshan). It has 13 chapters, and CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum groups 12 of them into four units for the 80-mark paper. Chapter 1, "Exploration: Entering the World of Secondary Science", opens the book on scientific language and is not listed in any unit. The table puts unit marks next to chapter titles, the view a tutor needs to plan revision.
| Unit | Marks (of 80) | Exploration chapters |
|---|---|---|
| World of Living | 27 | 2 Cell: The Building Block of Life; 3 Tissues in Action; 11 Reproduction: How Life Continues; 12 Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification |
| Matter – Its Nature and Behaviour | 25 | 5 Exploring Mixtures and their Separation; 8 Journey Inside the Atom; 9 Atomic Foundations of Matter |
| Motion, Force, Work and Sound | 23 | 4 Describing Motion Around Us; 6 How Forces Affect Motion; 7 Work, Energy, and Simple Machines; 10 Sound Waves: Characteristics and Applications |
| Earth as a System | 5 | 13 Earth as a System: Energy, Matter, and Life |
Three more facts shape how the year is taught:
Older guide books and a sibling's notes were written for a different book. For the board-level view across classes, see CBSE science tutors in Gurgaon; for the national chapter-by-chapter guide, see the Class 9 science tutor page.
Class IX science now comes in two levels. The Standard course, with its 80-mark, 3-hour exam, is for every CBSE student. Science Advanced is an optional layer on extra content, examined through one more paper worth 25 marks over 1 hour, and every question on it is of the higher-order (HOTS) kind. Families can choose Science Advanced alone, Mathematics Advanced alone, both, or neither.
The Science Advanced course for Grade 9 has ten chapters:
What the family should know before choosing:
Science Advanced suits a student already comfortable with the Standard chapters who enjoys reasoning problems and has room in the week. It does not suit a student whose Standard marks are slipping: the extra chapters add load without protecting the main score. The list leans on motion, forces, energy and atomic structure; our IIT foundation tutors in Gurgaon page covers that kind of depth for Classes 8 to 10. Ask your school how it is running the Advanced course this year, since it is assessed in school in Class IX.
For ICSE, CISCE sets Physics, Chemistry and Biology as separate papers of 80 marks, and each adds 20 marks of practical internal assessment. The Class 9 syllabus is already split that way, so an ICSE student effectively has three science teachers' worth of material:
| Subject | Class 9 headings | Tutor's priority |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | Measurements and Experimentation; Motion in One Dimension; Laws of Motion; Fluids; Heat and Energy; Light; Sound; Electricity and Magnetism | Numericals with units and graphs from the first chapter |
| Chemistry | The Language of Chemistry; Chemical Changes and Reactions; Water; Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonding; The Periodic Table; Study of the First Element – Hydrogen; Study of Gas Laws; Atmospheric and Environmental Chemistry | Symbols, valency and balanced equations until they are automatic |
| Biology | Basic Biology; Flowering Plants; Plant Physiology; Diversity in Animal Kingdom; Economic Importance of Bacteria and Fungi; Human Anatomy and Physiology; Health and Hygiene | Labelled diagrams and exact terms |
Each paper has its own Gurgaon guide: physics, chemistry and biology for ICSE students.
Cambridge aims IGCSE at students aged 14 to 16, so Grade 9 is often year one of the science course. Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610 each have Core and Extended routes: Core can lead to grades C–G and Extended to A*–G, and every candidate also takes a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. Other schools choose a single-award Combined Science course (0653) or the double-award Co-ordinated Sciences (0654). A tutor should know which route the school has in mind from the start. See IGCSE science tutors in Gurgaon.
The MYP runs for students aged 11 to 16. Sciences are assessed against criteria rather than a marks total, and MYP eAssessment is optional. The tutor reads the task sheet first and helps the student plan; the student does the work.
BSEH publishes its own Class 9 syllabus on bseh.org.in, and a tutor should work from the copy the school gives the student. The year is building towards Class 10 Science (013): an 80-mark annual exam, a 10-mark practical and 10 marks of internal assessment, with Chemical Substances worth 26 marks, World of Living 24, Natural Phenomena 14, Effects of Current 12 and Natural Resources 4. See Haryana Board tutors in Gurgaon.
Class 9 is where Class 8 gaps come due, on every board:
If the problem is at the algebra step of numericals, the gap may be in maths; see our Class 9 maths tutors in Gurgaon page.
Original practice problems, set out as examiners reward: data, formula, substitution, answer with unit. Take g = 10 m/s² where needed.
A scooter starts from rest and speeds up uniformly at 2 m/s² for 5 s. Find its final velocity and the distance covered.
A car of mass 1,200 kg moving at 20 m/s is brought to rest in 4 s. Find the braking force.
An atom of sodium has atomic number 11 and mass number 23. Find its protons, neutrons, electrons, electron arrangement and valency.
A student lifts a 2 kg bag onto a shelf 1.5 m high. Separately, a lever lifts a 600 N load with an effort of 150 N.
CBSE lists 13 Class 9 experiments, each tied to a chapter of Exploration. A tutor does not run the lab at home, but should make sure the student can explain each set-up and its result, since that reasoning returns in theory questions.
| Chapter | Practicals |
|---|---|
| 2 and 3 | Stained mounts of onion peel or Rhoeo leaf and of cheek cells; plant and animal tissues from prepared slides |
| 4 | Distance-time and velocity-time graphs using an inclined plane |
| 5 | Making and comparing a true solution, a suspension and a colloid; four separations (oil from water, ink colours, ammonium chloride from salt, muddy water cleared with alum) |
| 6 | Checking the second law of motion using a trolley pulled by hanging masses over a pulley |
| 7 | A simple pendulum to show energy is conserved; working out a lever's mechanical advantage |
| 9 | Conservation of mass in a chemical reaction |
| 10 | Speed of a pulse along a slinky or stretched string |
| 11 and 12 | Budding in yeast and Hydra, spore formation in bread mould, parts of a flower; identifying specimens |
Gurugram CBSE and ICSE schools generally start in April and run to a half-yearly and a final exam, with internal assessment alongside both.
| When | Science focus | Tutor's checkpoints |
|---|---|---|
| April to June | Opening chapters (often cell and motion); repair Class 8 basics: units, the particle model, labelled diagrams | Advanced level decision made with the school; a numerical layout agreed and used every time |
| July to September | Forces, mixtures, atoms; first periodic tests; half-yearly | Each test paper reviewed; errors copied into a mistakes notebook |
| October to December | Work and energy, sound, reproduction, diversity; practical records and portfolio | Case-based questions practised weekly; labelled diagrams from memory |
| January to March | Revision across all units; finals; Advanced paper where taken | A written list of weak chapters to fix in the summer before Class 10 |
ICSE students follow the same rhythm with three subjects in parallel. Class 10 builds directly on this year: see Class 10 science tutors in Gurgaon. Parents often tell us their child's school so the tutor can follow the same board and books. These Gurugram schools follow CBSE, ICSE and ISC, IB or Cambridge IGCSE, as shown on each school's own site or its board's directory, with the sector each is in. NXTutors has no tie-up with any school; tutors are matched by board and syllabus, and the list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

NCERT's new Class 9 science textbook is Exploration (Hindi edition: Anveshan), with 13 chapters. CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum groups 12 of them into four units for the 80-mark paper. The living-world unit carries 27 marks, matter 25, motion, force, work and sound 23, and the Earth-as-a-system unit 5; the school adds 20 marks of internal assessment.
An optional higher level introduced from 2026-27. Those who opt in study ten extra chapters, from Measurement – Foundation of Science to Engineering Life: Miracles in Biotechnology, examined in a separate paper of 25 marks over 1 hour made entirely of higher-order questions, alongside the common 80-mark paper. In Class IX it is school-based; it becomes part of the Class X Board exam from 2027-28.
No. The Advanced score is kept out of the overall total. Reaching 50% on the Advanced paper adds a marksheet line recording that the Advanced Level was cleared; CBSE describes this wording as tentative. Internal assessment is the same for all students whichever level they choose.
Yes. CBSE allows a student to take neither, one or both of Science Advanced and Mathematics Advanced. A tutor can help you judge it: Science Advanced suits a student already comfortable with the Standard chapters and with time in the week, not one whose main science marks are slipping.
ICSE treats science as three subjects, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, each examined as a separate 80-mark paper with 20 marks of practical internal assessment. Class 9 Physics includes topics such as Fluids and Heat and Energy, Chemistry includes the Language of Chemistry and Study of Gas Laws, and Biology includes Flowering Plants and Health and Hygiene. CBSE has one integrated Science paper.
Yes, we match tutors by board. For IGCSE we ask whether the school is teaching the separate sciences (Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620, Biology 0610) or Combined or Co-ordinated Sciences, and whether Core or Extended is likely. For IB MYP we need the task sheets and criteria. For the Haryana Board the tutor works from the BSEH syllabus copy the school gives your child.
Two sessions a week covers most Class 9 students, with a third before the half-yearly and final exams if chapters need repair. ICSE students sometimes need more because they are preparing three science subjects. Starting in the first term, rather than after the half-yearly result, gives the tutor time to fix Class 8 gaps.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets a fee, and it is visible on your shortlist before the free demo class.
