Haryana Board Class 10 Maths and Science: Papers and a Plan
The Haryana Board (BSEH) Class 10 maths paper for 2026-27 is a 3-hour, 80-mark paper of 38 questions in five sections, with 20 more marks from internal assessment. Science is an 80-mark, 41-question theory paper plus a 10-mark practical exam and 10 marks of internal assessment. Both follow the NCERT Class 10 chapters. This guide sets out what BSEH has published for 2026-27, how each paper is built, and a board-year plan for students in Gurugram who study under the Haryana Board.
Everything here is taken from BSEH's own 2026-27 syllabus and question-paper-design documents, linked from the Class 10 syllabus page on bseh.org.in. If BSEH revises a document during the year, the board's version wins.
What BSEH publishes for Class 10 maths and science
For each subject, BSEH's 2026-27 page links three things a family should download in April:
- The syllabus with chapter-wise marks. It lists every chapter, the unit marks and the internal assessment rules.
- The question paper design. It gives the number of questions of each type, the marks for each, where internal choice is given, and how marks split between knowledge, application and skill.
- A month-wise teaching plan. It shows which chapters schools are expected to teach in which month, when revision happens and when the half-yearly falls.
The website also has an "Old Question Paper/Sample Paper" section with a year-wise page of old Secondary papers. Together these documents tell you almost everything about the exam. What they cannot tell you is the date sheet, which BSEH announces separately each year.
Maths: chapters, paper design and internal marks
BSEH Class 10 Mathematics has subject code 009. The annual exam is 80 marks on the whole syllabus, and internal assessment adds 20. The board's page lists the subject as "Mathematics (Basic & Standard)", and the question paper design gives two versions.
| Unit | Marks |
|---|---|
| Number System | 06 |
| Algebra | 20 |
| Coordinate Geometry | 06 |
| Geometry | 15 |
| Trigonometry | 12 |
| Mensuration | 10 |
| Statistics and Probability | 11 |
| Total | 80 |
The units cover chapters 1–14 of the NCERT Class 10 Mathematics book, from Real Numbers to Probability. BSEH prescribes its own edition of the NCERT textbook and NCERT's Exemplar Problems for Class X.
How the maths paper is built
| Section | Questions | Marks each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| A – Objective (12 MCQs, 3 one-word, 3 fill in the blanks, 2 assertion-reason) | 20 | 1 | 20 |
| B – Very short answer | 5 | 2 | 10 |
| C – Short answer | 6 | 3 | 18 |
| D – Long answer | 4 | 5 | 20 |
| E – Source-based or case-based | 3 | 4 | 12 |
| Total | 38 | 80 |
Internal choice is given in any two questions of Sections B and C, and in all questions of Section D. The Standard paper puts 43 marks (54%) on knowledge and understanding, 19 (24%) on application and 18 (22%) on skill. The Basic paper shifts weight to recall: 60 marks (75%), 12 (15%) and 8 (10%).
What this means in practice: a quarter of the paper is one-mark objective work, where careless slips are costly, and another 32 marks sit in the long-answer and source-based sections, where a student must set out working clearly. A student who only practises long sums, or only MCQs, is preparing for half a paper.
The 20 internal marks
BSEH spells out the maths internal assessment: two SATs (4 marks), the half-yearly exam (2), the pre-board (2), classroom participation (2), a project (5) and attendance (5). The attendance marks are graded: 75–80% earns 1 mark, rising in steps to 5 marks for above 95%. Ten of the twenty marks come from the project and attendance alone, so steady attendance and a project submitted on time are among the easiest marks of the year.
A worked example in the board's style
Question: find the nature of the roots of 2x² − 4x + 2 = 0, and solve it.
Here a = 2, b = −4, c = 2. The discriminant is b² − 4ac = 16 − 16 = 0, so the roots are real and equal. Each root is −b ÷ 2a = 4 ÷ 4 = 1. Check: 2(1)² − 4(1) + 2 = 0. A one-mark question might ask only for the nature of the roots; a three-mark question might ask for both steps with working. Writing the discriminant line every time protects marks in both.
Science: chapters, paper design and practicals
BSEH Class 10 Science has subject code 013. The marks split three ways: an 80-mark annual theory exam, a 10-mark practical exam and 10 marks of internal assessment.
| Unit | Chapters | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical Substances – Nature and Behaviour | Chemical reactions and equations; acids, bases and salts; metals and non-metals; carbon and its compounds | 26 |
| World of Living | Life processes; control and coordination; how organisms reproduce; heredity | 24 |
| Natural Phenomena | Light – reflection and refraction; the human eye and the colourful world | 14 |
| Effects of Current | Electricity; magnetic effects of electric current | 12 |
| Natural Resources | Our environment | 04 |
The theory paper has 41 questions: 20 one-mark objective questions (8 MCQs, 4 fill in the blanks, 4 one-word answers and 4 assertion-reason), 9 very short answers of 2 marks, 9 short answers of 3 marks and 3 essay-type answers of 5 marks. By competency, 32 marks test knowledge, 24 understanding, 16 application and 8 skill.
The 10-mark practical exam has four parts: two experiments of 2 marks each, one activity based on the student's project work (2), the practical record (2) and a viva (2). The syllabus lists 12 practicals, among them verifying Ohm's law, finding the focal length of a convex lens, testing pH with pH paper and tracing light through a glass prism. Internal assessment is two SATs (2 marks), the half-yearly (1), the pre-board (1), classroom participation (1) and attendance (5).
Two notes in BSEH's science syllabus are worth knowing. Material printed in the boxes of the NCERT textbook stays out of the year-end paper. And teachers are asked to have students keep a notebook of terms and definitions for each chapter, which helps with the one-word and fill-in-the-blank questions.
A worked practical example
In the Ohm's law practical, a student records a potential difference of 6 V across a resistor when the current is 0.3 A. Resistance R = V ÷ I = 6 ÷ 0.3 = 20 Ω. If doubling the voltage to 12 V gives 0.6 A, the ratio is still 20 Ω, which is what verifies the law. A viva could ask why the ratio stays constant; a student who can say "because the resistance of the wire does not change at a steady temperature" has understood the experiment, not just done it.
Hindi or English medium: what changes for the tutor
The syllabus and the chapters are the same in either medium; the language of the answer changes. For a Hindi-medium student, a tutor should teach every key term in both languages, so that "विभवांतर" and "potential difference" are linked in the child's mind, and should practise writing full answers in Hindi, not just explaining them aloud. For an English-medium student, the risk is the reverse: losing marks in the one-word and fill-in-the-blank questions because a term is half-remembered.
Either way, the terminology notebook BSEH suggests is a simple habit that pays off. Keep one page per chapter, with each term, its meaning in a line and, where useful, its translation.
A board-year plan from April to the exam
BSEH's month-wise teaching plans for 2026-27 give the order schools are expected to follow. A tutor can work one step ahead of it.
| Months | Maths (BSEH plan) | Science (BSEH plan) | Extra focus at home |
|---|---|---|---|
| April – June | Real Numbers, Polynomials, Linear Equations in Two Variables, Quadratic Equations; summer homework | Chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, life processes, light; June project work | Start the terminology notebook and the maths project early |
| July – August | Statistics, Probability, Triangles, Coordinate Geometry | Control and coordination, reproduction, the human eye | First SAT; begin chapter-wise old-paper questions |
| September | Arithmetic Progressions, revision, half-yearly | Revision and half-yearly | Full timed papers; list weak chapters afterwards |
| October – December | Trigonometry and its applications, Circles, Areas Related to Circles, Surface Areas and Volumes | Metals and non-metals, electricity, carbon compounds, heredity, magnetic effects, our environment | Practical record complete; second SAT; pre-board preparation |
| January – February | Revision | Revision | Pre-board, timed papers, error notebook review |
| March | BSEH's plan marks March for the annual examination; the date sheet is announced separately | Light revision, sleep, formula and term sheets | |
Two things to notice. In maths, BSEH places Statistics and Probability in July, earlier than the NCERT chapter order; students who learn them early get extra revision time on 11 marks. In science, electricity and carbon compounds come late in the year, in October and November, and they sit in units worth 12 and 26 marks, so a tutor should leave room for them before the pre-board.
Using BSEH model and past papers well
- Start chapter-wise, not paper-wise. From July, pull questions on finished chapters from the year-wise old papers on bseh.org.in.
- Check the design year. Older papers may follow an older pattern. Use them for content practice, and use the 2026-27 question paper design for the section and mark structure.
- Time the full papers. From the half-yearly onwards, attempt complete papers in 3 hours, then mark them against the section totals above.
- Mark like an examiner. For each lost mark, ask: was it a concept, a calculation slip, a missing step or a misread question? Each needs a different fix.
- Use the exemplar. BSEH prescribes NCERT's Exemplar Problems for both subjects. They are good practice for the application and skill marks.
