How do you become an online tutor in India?

How do you become an online tutor in India?

By NXTutors Academic Team 11 min read

To become an online tutor in India, choose the subjects, classes and boards you can teach with real depth, set up a reliable teaching kit (a laptop, a steady connection with a backup, and a way to see the student's written working), then join a platform or build referrals that bring you students who want online classes. Families judge online tutors on the first lesson, so a well-run demo matters more than any certificate on your profile.

Online tutoring suits teachers who want students beyond their own neighbourhood, professionals who can teach in the evenings, and graduates in towns where local demand for their subject is thin. This guide explains who online tuition suits, the equipment you need, how to choose what to teach, how online requests are matched on NXTutors, how to run an online demo, the safeguarding rules that protect you and the family, and how fees and earnings work.

Who is online tutoring right for?

Online tutoring suits you if:

  • you teach a specialist course that few tutors near any one family can teach, such as IB, IGCSE, ISC or JEE-level maths and physics;
  • you live somewhere with fewer local students for your subject;
  • your free hours are early mornings or late evenings, when travel to homes is impractical;
  • you would rather not spend part of each evening on the road.

It is harder if you mostly teach very young children, who usually need an adult beside them and someone to watch their pencil, or if you dislike working through a screen. Be honest with yourself; many tutors do both, and the comparison in home tutor or online tutor shows how families see the trade-offs.

What equipment do you need?

You do not need a studio, but a weak setup makes even a good teacher look disorganised.

ItemMinimumBetter
DeviceA laptop with a working webcamLaptop plus a second screen for notes and the student's work
InternetA stable broadband connectionBroadband plus a phone hotspot as backup
AudioWired earphones with a microphoneA headset that cuts background noise
WritingA phone on a stand pointed at your notebookA writing tablet and stylus with a shared digital whiteboard
Seeing the student's workPhotos of their notebook sent during classThe student's phone on a stand over their notebook as a second camera
SpaceA quiet corner with a plain backgroundA fixed desk with good light from the front
PowerA charged laptopA small power backup for outages

For maths, physics and chemistry, the deciding item is the last one: a way to watch the student's working line by line. Without it you can only mark final answers, and families notice. Test your full setup on a call with a friend before your first demo.

What should you teach online?

Online, your competition is not just the tutors in your town; it is everyone teaching the same course. That makes a narrow, deep offer stronger than a broad one. "Science, Classes 1–12" is hard to believe. "CBSE Class 11–12 chemistry" or "IGCSE Extended physics and chemistry" tells a family you know their paper.

Pick courses where you know the syllabus, the paper style and the way marks are awarded. International boards and senior classes are natural fits for online work, because families often struggle to find a specialist nearby; IB and IGCSE tutor jobs explains what those families expect. School subjects for middle classes work online too, provided you can keep the student engaged and see their work.

Language and writing subjects adapt well to shared documents, where you can comment on a paragraph in real time. Numerical subjects need the writing setup above.

How are online requests matched on NXTutors?

For online requests, where you live does not decide whether you are offered a lead. What decides it is whether you teach the subject and the class band, whether your board fits where it matters (always for IB, IGCSE and ISC, and from Class 9 for Indian boards), and whether you have chosen online or both as your mode. Fit is scored on subject, class, board, mode and fee, and blended with quality signals. A gender preference is applied only if the parent asked for one.

When a request fits, you see a masked card: the class, a summary of the need, the timing, a budget band and a few signals explaining why it fits you, but never the family's name or number. Unlocking costs credits; at present between 80 and 240 credits per lead, depending on how complete and serious the request is and how soon the family needs a tutor. The card shows the price before you unlock. At most five tutors can unlock any one lead, and a lead stays open for about seven days.

After unlocking you send one proposal with a message, your fee per hour and up to three demo slots. Two-way chat opens when the family replies or shortlists you; a paid plan alone never opens chat. If the family never opens your proposal within 72 hours, or the lead turns out to be a duplicate, fake or withdrawn, your credits come back in full automatically. Claims must be made within seven days, and changing your mind after unlocking does not qualify.

How should you set up your online profile?

  • Mode: choose online, or both if you also teach at home.
  • Courses: list subject, class and board together, such as "ISC physics, Classes 11–12".
  • Hours: give the times you can keep every week, including early-morning or late-evening slots that fit around school and coaching.
  • Setup: say briefly how you teach, for example a writing tablet and shared whiteboard, and how you will see the student's work.
  • Fee: set a fee for each class band.
  • Photo and introduction: a clear, friendly photo and a short note on how a typical lesson runs. Make no claims about results, schools or ranks that you cannot prove.

How do you run a strong online demo?

The first class with a new family is a free demo. You must not charge for it or ask for a deposit or registration fee. Families compare two or three tutors, so treat it as a full lesson.

  1. Agree the tools in advance. Settle the video-call tool and whiteboard with the parent before the class, and send the link to the parent's number or a family group.
  2. Start with a quick check. Ask what the student is doing in school this week and look at a recent test or homework.
  3. Teach one idea briefly. Keep explanation short and visual.
  4. Let the student work. Have them solve on paper or the whiteboard while you watch, and correct the working, not just the answer.
  5. Check understanding. Ask them to explain a step back to you or spot an error.
  6. Close with a plan. Send a short written summary and small homework to the parent.

What safeguarding rules apply online?

Online tuition still means teaching a child, and the rules matter as much as in a living room. For a child, communicate with the parent about timings, fees and progress. Teach in a way the class can be observed, for example with the student in a common room and the door open. Do not record classes or take screenshots or photos of a child without the parent's consent. Keep messages on channels the parent can see, not the student's private chat. Our safeguarding policy sets out the full expectations, and never pass a family's details or a lead to anyone else.

How do fees and earnings work for online tutors?

You set your own fee for each class band, and families see it before the demo. The fee you charge must be the fee shown; any change is agreed with the parent in advance and applies to future classes only. Online removes your travel, which you may reflect in your fee, but class, board, subject, experience and frequency usually matter more. As a reference from the home side, across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Under the platform's current rules — see the tutor terms — for online tuition you receive 70% of the fee every month. For home tuition, if you also teach at home, you receive half of the first month's fee and then the full fee from the second month. You are an independent professional, not an employee: you choose your hours, you are free to teach outside NXTutors, and you are responsible for your own tax. How the plans, credits and earnings fit together is set out in NXTutors tutor plans, credits and earnings.

Your first month as an online tutor: a checklist

  • Kit tested end to end, including the backup connection
  • A way to see students' written work for numerical subjects
  • Courses listed by subject, class and board
  • Weekly hours you can keep through the school year
  • A fee for each class band
  • ID uploaded and approved
  • Two demo lessons prepared and rehearsed on a call
  • A simple record for each student: board, chapters covered, marks, next topic
  • A short progress note for each parent every few weeks

How NXTutors can help

Joining NXTutors is free. The Free plan includes 160 lead credits a month and WhatsApp alerts, now being rolled out, about a new lead when you are among the five closest fits for it, up to ten alerts a month. Extra credits come in packs of 500 for ₹199 or 1,500 for ₹499, and bought credits never expire. Paid plans are optional; they add visibility only in places labelled "Featured", AI tools and more credits, never change the order tutors are ranked in for a request, and do not promise leads, students or income. See the pricing page for plans.

Tutors who join go through an ID check: you confirm your phone or email with a one-time code and upload a government photo ID (Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or driving licence, front and back), which our team reviews. The Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID, and leads reach you only once it is approved; how we verify tutors explains it, and it is not a police or background check. Families get two or three tutors per request, a free demo, and see your fee first. Frequently asked questions

Can I become an online tutor without a teaching degree?

Families look for subject knowledge, clear explanations and reliability more than a particular certificate. Graduates, postgraduates and working professionals tutor online alongside school teachers. On NXTutors you must be 18 or older and your profile must be true, so list only the classes and boards you can teach well.

Which video-call tool should I use for online tuition?

Use a tool you already teach well with and that the family is comfortable with, and agree it with the parent before the demo, along with the whiteboard. Send class links to the parent's number or a family group so they can see every exchange, keep cameras on, and do not record a child without the parent's consent. Test it once with the family before the first lesson.

Can I teach online students in other cities?

Yes. Online leads are matched on subject, class band, board where it matters and mode, not on where you live. Choose online or both on your profile. A tutor in a smaller town can be offered requests from families anywhere in India, provided the course and hours fit.

How much does it cost to start as an online tutor on NXTutors?

Joining is free and the Free plan gives 160 lead credits a month. Unlocking a lead currently costs 80 to 240 credits, shown on the card before you unlock. Extra credit packs and optional paid plans are available if you want more credits or visibility; details are on the pricing page. No plan promises leads or income.

What share of the fee do online tutors receive?

Under the platform's current rules, set out in the tutor terms, you receive 70% of the fee every month for online tuition. You set the fee yourself, and families see it before the free demo. Read the tutor terms in full before you join, as they also cover demos, fee changes and safeguarding.

Which subjects work least well online?

Early primary classes are the hardest, because young children usually need an adult beside them and someone watching their pencil. Numerical subjects work well only if you can see the student's working. If online is the wrong fit for a family, say so honestly; it builds trust for future requests.
