How to find home tuition jobs in India

By NXTutors Academic Team 12 min read

To find home tuition jobs in India, first decide exactly what you teach and where you can travel, then put that in front of families through several channels at once: people who already know you, local notice boards and housing-society groups, and a tutor-matching platform that sends you requests that fit. After that, the work is won or lost in your reply and your first lesson, not in how many places you have signed up.

This guide is for teachers, recent graduates, postgraduates and working professionals who want regular home tuition work. It covers defining your offer, where requests come from, judging a platform, how requests reach you on NXTutors, setting a fee, and keeping families, with a four-week plan at the end.

What is a home tuition job, exactly?

A home tuition job is usually not a job in the employment sense. It is an arrangement between you and a family: you teach their child, at their home or online, at agreed times, for a fee you have set. You are an independent professional. You choose your subjects, your hours and how many students you take on, and you are responsible for your own tax. Nobody hands you a timetable; you build it one family at a time.

What should you decide before you start looking?

Families do not search for "a tutor". They search for a Class 7 maths tutor near their sector, an ICSE English tutor for prescribed texts, or an IB Physics tutor for Higher Level. The more precisely you describe yourself, the easier you are to match. Settle these points before you apply anywhere:

DecisionWhy it mattersExample of a clear answer
SubjectsRequests are matched on subject firstMaths and physics, not "all subjects"
Class bandsA primary child and a Class 12 student need different tutorsClasses 6 to 10 maths; Classes 11 to 12 physics
BoardsFamilies on IB, IGCSE or ISC ask for those boards by nameCBSE and ICSE up to Class 10; IGCSE Extended
ModeHome, online or both opens different requestsHome in nearby sectors, online for senior classes
Travel areasHome requests depend on where the family livesThree or four neighbourhoods you can reach in 30 minutes
HoursMost tuition happens after school and at weekendsWeekdays 4–8 pm, Saturday mornings
Fee per classFamilies compare fees before they meet youOne fee for Classes 6–8, a higher one for Classes 9–10

Be honest about travel. A tutor who lists a distant area and then arrives late in the third week loses the family. Start with a small radius you can keep every week and widen it later.

Where do home tuition requests actually come from?

Most tutors use a mix of channels, each with a different cost in time and money.

People who already know you

Former students, parents of current students, colleagues, neighbours and relatives remain a dependable source of home tuition in towns and cities alike. Tell people specifically what you teach. "I take Class 9 and 10 science for CBSE and ICSE in the evenings" is far easier to pass on than "I do tuitions".

Local notice boards and society groups

A neat card in a local market, library or community centre still works for younger classes. In cities, housing societies and resident welfare association (RWA) groups often have a channel where parents ask for recommendations. A short, factual introduction in the right group is reasonable; repeated posting is not. Read each group's rules on advertising first.

Tutor-matching platforms

Platforms collect requests from families and pass them to tutors who fit. They differ a great deal: some charge to join, some charge per request, some take a share of your fee, and some combine these. Read the terms before you decide.

ChannelWhat it costs youWhat to watch
ReferralsTime and goodwillSlow to build at first; depends on a few happy families
Notice boards and society groupsPrinting, a little timeGroup rules; sharing your number publicly
Tutor-matching platformsVaries: plans, credits or a share of feesTerms, refund rules, how requests are shared and priced

How do you judge a tuition platform before you join?

Find written answers to these before you hand over details or money.

  • Is joining free, and what is optional? Know what any paid plan adds.
  • How are requests priced? A fixed charge, credits, or a share of your fee?
  • How many tutors can take the same request? A capped request is a fairer contest than an open race.
  • What if a request is fake or the family vanishes? Look for written refund rules.
  • Does paying change how you are ranked? Paid visibility should be clearly labelled.
  • What identity check do tutors go through?
  • What are the rules on the first lesson, fee changes and safeguarding? These protect you as much as the family.

How does a request reach you on NXTutors?

On NXTutors, a family's request matched to you is called a lead. You are offered a lead when you teach the subject and class band, your board fits where it matters (IB, IGCSE and ISC always, Indian boards from Class 9), your mode fits, and for home classes the family's sector is in your travel areas or your zone. A gender preference is applied only if the parent asked for one. Fit is scored on subject, class, board, place, mode and fee, blended with quality signals.

Before you spend anything, you see a masked card: a label such as the class, a summary of the need, the area or zone, the timing, a budget band and a few signals explaining why it fits you, but never the family's name or number. Unlocking costs credits: at present between 80 and 240 per lead, depending on how complete and serious the request is and how soon the family needs a tutor, and the card shows the price first. At most five tutors can unlock one lead; then it shows as Full. A lead stays open for about seven days.

Once you unlock, you send one proposal: a message, your fee per hour and up to three demo slots. Two-way chat opens when the family replies or shortlists you. Credits come back in full, automatically, if the lead turns out to be a duplicate or fake, the family withdraws it, or the family never opens your proposal within 72 hours; claims must be made within seven days, and changing your mind does not qualify. Leads go only to tutors whose ID our team has approved, so finish that step early.

What makes a family choose you?

Families on NXTutors compare two or three tutors before choosing one. You win the comparison in three places.

Your profile

List the exact classes, boards and subjects you teach, your fee for each class band, your mode and your travel areas. Write a short introduction that says how you teach rather than how good you are, with no claims you cannot prove, such as results, ranks or schools. Our guide on building a tutor profile families trust goes through it line by line.

Your proposal

Answer the need on the card. If it says a Class 8 student is struggling with fractions and algebra before a test, say what you would do in the first two classes, and offer demo slots that match the timing. A generic message is easy to ignore.

Your first lesson

The first class is a free demo for the family, and it decides most matches. Teach a normal lesson on what the student is doing in school now, check understanding with questions rather than "understood?", and finish with a short plan. Our guide on preparing a demo lesson as a tutor covers this in detail. Under the tutor terms you must not charge for the demo or ask for a deposit or registration fee for it.

How should you set your fee?

You set your own fee, and families see it before the demo, so a good lesson is not followed by bargaining. Think about the class, board, subject, your experience, travel time and how often the family wants classes. As a reference point, across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Under the platform's current rules, what you receive each month for home and online classes is set out in the tutor terms. How much work you get depends on your subjects, area, hours and which families ask. The fee you charge must be the one shown before the demo; any change is agreed with the parent in advance and applies to future classes only.

Which habits keep a family for the long term?

  • Punctuality. Allow for traffic and building entry, and message the parent before you are late, not after.
  • A visible plan. A short plan for the month and a brief progress note every few weeks.
  • Checked homework. Small, specific tasks, always looked at in the next class.
  • Talking to the parent. For a child, settle timings, fees and progress with the parent, not the student's own phone.
  • Safe arrangements. Teach where an adult is at home or the online class can be observed, and never record or photograph a child without the parent's consent; see our safeguarding policy.

A four-week plan for finding your first students

  • Week 1: write down your subjects, class bands, boards, mode, travel areas, hours and fee. Tell five people what you now teach. Apply on a matching platform and upload your ID.
  • Week 2: complete your profile, including a fee for each class band and a clear photo. Put up a notice in one or two local places.
  • Week 3: prepare two adaptable demo lessons, one for a middle-school student and one for a senior student. Reply to every suitable request with a specific proposal.
  • Week 4: review. Were your hours or travel areas too narrow? Did families choose someone else after a demo, and can you see why? Change one thing at a time.

How NXTutors can help

Joining NXTutors is free. The Free plan includes 160 lead credits a month, plus WhatsApp alerts, now being rolled out, about a new lead when you are among the five closest fits for it, up to ten alerts a month. Extra credits come in packs of 500 for ₹199 or 1,500 for ₹499, and bought credits never expire. Paid plans are optional: they add visibility only in places labelled "Featured", AI tools and more credits, never change the order tutors are ranked in for a request, and do not promise leads, students or income. Compare them on the pricing page.

Tutors who join go through an ID check: you confirm your phone or email with a one-time code and upload a government photo ID (Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or driving licence, front and back), which our team reviews. The Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID. It is not a police or background check; see how we verify tutors. Families get two or three tutors for each request, a free demo, and see your fee first. Browse tuition jobs by city, read maths tutor jobs or online tutor jobs, or start on become a tutor. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a teaching degree to take home tuition jobs?

No, you do not need a teaching degree to take home tuition jobs, because families care most about whether you know the syllabus and can explain it clearly. Many tutors are school teachers, but graduates, postgraduates and professionals with strong subject knowledge also tutor. On NXTutors you must be 18 or older and your profile must be true.

How many tutors can unlock the same tuition lead on NXTutors?

At most five tutors can unlock the same tuition lead on NXTutors, after which it shows as Full, and a lead expires after about seven days. It is offered only to tutors whose subject, class, board, mode and area fit. Families compare two or three tutors before choosing, so a specific proposal and a prepared demo matter more than speed.

Does it cost anything to join NXTutors as a tutor?

No, joining NXTutors as a tutor costs nothing, and onboarding is free too, with the Free plan including 160 lead credits a month. Unlocking a lead costs credits, between 80 and 240 at present, with the price shown on the card first. Paid plans are optional and add visibility in labelled Featured places, AI tools and more credits.

Can I teach home tuition and keep my school or office job?

Yes, you can teach home tuition alongside a school or office job, and many tutors do, teaching in the evenings and at weekends. Check your employment contract first, because some schools and coaching centres restrict private tuition of their own students. On NXTutors you are an independent professional, free to teach outside the platform, and you set your own hours.

Will I see the family's phone number before they reply?

No, you will not see the family's phone number before they reply; at the lead stage NXTutors shows a masked card without the family's name or number. You reply with one proposal, and two-way chat opens only when the family replies or shortlists you. Never pass a family's details or a lead to anyone else.

What happens to my credits if a tuition lead is fake?

If a tuition lead turns out to be fake or a duplicate, or the family withdraws it, your credits come back in full automatically. The same applies if the family never opens your proposal within 72 hours. Claims must be made within seven days, and changing your mind after unlocking does not qualify for a refund of credits.

Where can I find home tuition students apart from platforms?

Apart from tutor-matching platforms, home tuition students come from people who already know you, such as former students, parents and neighbours, and from local notice boards and housing-society groups. Tell people exactly what you teach, for example Class 9 and 10 science for CBSE and ICSE. In RWA groups, post one short, factual introduction and follow each group's rules.
