Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

MYP sciences reward a student who can think like a scientist on paper: frame a question, design a fair test, handle the data honestly and say what the result means for people. Knowing the facts is only one of the four things your child is marked on. That is why a good MYP science tutor in Gurugram spends as much time on planning and writing up investigations as on teaching cells, particles and forces. This guide explains the four MYP sciences criteria, how the work changes from MYP 1 to MYP 5, three worked examples of the skills involved, how a tutor plans the school year around units and lab tasks, and how MYP science prepares a student for Diploma Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
The Middle Years Programme covers ages 11 to 16. The IB describes it as five years long, though some schools run a shorter version, and in a full five-year school the years usually match Grades 6 to 10. Sciences are one of the subject groups every MYP student studies.
There is no single MYP science textbook or chapter list that every school follows. The IB sets the aims and the assessment criteria, and each school designs its own units: one might pair a unit on energy with a design challenge, another might build a unit on ecosystems around a local field study. Schools also organise the later years differently. Some keep one combined sciences course to the end; others teach biology, chemistry and physics as separate courses in MYP 4 and 5. Ask your child's school which model it uses, because it decides whether you need one tutor for all three or a specialist for one.
| Feature | MYP sciences | CBSE or ICSE science |
|---|---|---|
| What sets the content | The school's own units, within the IB framework | A published syllabus and, for CBSE, NCERT books |
| How work is judged | Four criteria, each scored against level descriptors | Marks on tests and board papers |
| Place of practical work | Investigations are assessed in their own right | Practicals and projects alongside written papers |
| Final external exam | Optional IB on-screen exam, if the school registers | Board examination in Class 10 |
For a CBSE comparison, our science home tutor in Gurgaon page covers the board courses class by class.
Four equally weighted criteria are used for MYP sciences, and the highest achievement level on each is 8. Teachers often rewrite the descriptors for each task, so the task sheet is the first thing a tutor should read.
Showing a secure grasp of the science itself: explaining ideas clearly and using them on unfamiliar questions. This is the criterion closest to a normal science test.
Turning a question into a testable hypothesis, choosing variables and writing a method someone else could follow safely. The worked example below shows the first step.
Recording and presenting data, interpreting trends, judging whether the hypothesis held and how reliable the method was, and suggesting improvements.
Writing about how science is applied in the real world and its effects on people and the environment, using sources and scientific language rather than opinion.
Students from textbook-based schools are often strong on A and weak on B, C and D, because those three need practice in writing, not memorising. That gap is where a tutor helps most.
The topic names in this list are a general picture of what MYP units tend to cover, not an IB list. Your child's unit planner is the real map.
These are original examples, written to show the thinking each criterion rewards. None is taken from a school task.
Aim as a student first writes it: "To see if hot water dissolves sugar better."
That is not testable yet, because "better" is not measurable. A tutor walks the student through three moves:
Testable hypothesis: "If the temperature of the water is increased, the time taken for 5 g of sugar to dissolve will decrease, because water particles move faster at higher temperatures and collide with the sugar crystals more often and with more energy." It names both variables, predicts a direction and gives a scientific reason. That reason, linked to particle theory, is what lifts a hypothesis above a guess.
A student times 10 swings of a pendulum four times and records 14.2 s, 14.4 s, 16.9 s and 14.3 s. The third reading is far from the others and is likely a counting or timing slip, so it should be marked as anomalous and the trial repeated, not quietly deleted. The mean of the three consistent readings is (14.2 + 14.4 + 14.3) ÷ 3 = 42.9 ÷ 3 = 14.3 s, so one swing takes 14.3 ÷ 10 = 1.43 s. Timing ten swings and dividing is itself an improvement worth explaining: it reduces the effect of human reaction time on each reading. A good write-up states all of this in words, not just the final number.
Question: should a housing society switch its garden watering from sprinklers to drip irrigation? A strong answer explains the science (drip lines deliver water to the roots, so less is lost to evaporation and run-off), then weighs the impacts on more than one side: water saved and lower bills against the cost of installing pipes, the need for maintenance and the risk of blocked emitters. It ends with a reasoned judgement and names the sources used. In a city like Gurugram, where water supply is a regular topic in society meetings, this kind of question also helps the student see why the criterion exists.
Lab reports and criterion D essays are assessed school work, so the student's work must be their own. A tutor should be open about this with the family from the start.
Fair help: teaching the science behind the investigation, practising hypotheses and variable tables on a different experiment, showing how to draw a graph with correct axes and scales, and explaining what the task's descriptors are asking for.
Not acceptable: choosing the student's variables for an assessed task, writing or rewording the method or conclusion, processing the student's actual data for them, or editing a draft before submission. The class teacher is the person who gives feedback on drafts, and the student should follow the school's rules on outside help.
Because units are school-written, the plan follows the school's unit planner and lab calendar rather than a fixed chapter order.
| Stage | Focus | What the tutor does |
|---|---|---|
| First weeks of the year | Baseline | Checks particle ideas, cells, forces and graph skills; reads the year's unit list; agrees targets |
| Start of each unit | Content | Teaches the new science so it is secure before any assessed task |
| Before an investigation | Criteria B and C | Practice investigation on a different question: hypothesis, variables, method, table, graph |
| Before a criterion D task | Reflection | How to use sources, weigh impacts and write a judgement, practised on another topic |
| After feedback | Targets | Turns the teacher's comments into two or three specific habits for the next unit |
| Final two MYP years | Looking ahead | On-screen exam practice if the school registers; content depth for the chosen Diploma sciences |
One session a week is usually enough in MYP 1 to 3. In MYP 4 and 5, students taking separate sciences sometimes need a specialist for the hardest one, often physics or chemistry.
In the IB Diploma, every subject includes an internally assessed component, and in the sciences that is an investigation. Students who learned criterion B and C habits in the MYP, a precise question, controlled variables and an honest evaluation, start the Diploma with a real head start. What changes is the depth and pace of content, especially at Higher Level, and the shift towards timed written papers.
MYP 5 is the right time to strengthen whichever science the student plans to take at HL. Where a school switches to Cambridge IGCSE for the last two years of middle school, our IGCSE science tutor page covers that route. For the criteria and eAssessment in maths and sciences together, read our MYP criteria and on-screen exam explainer, and for maths alongside science see our IB MYP maths tutors page.

Science tutoring has one advantage at home: the tutor can run a quick kitchen-table demonstration, such as dissolving, floating and sinking, or a simple circuit kit, that makes an idea stick. Families in DLF Phase 1 and Sushant Lok Phase 1, and off Sohna Road in Sector 48 and Sector 49, often choose home sessions in a slot before or after the heaviest evening traffic on the arterial roads.
Online works well for criterion C and D coaching, because graphs, tables and drafts of practice reports are easy to share on screen. For a specialist in one Diploma-track science, online or hybrid classes widen the choice across the city. The Sohna Road and South City tuition guide adds local timing tips.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, and the home tuition fees in Gurgaon post sets out what moves it up or down.

Parents often tell us their child's school so the tutor can follow the same board and books. These Gurugram schools follow IB, as shown on each school's own site or its board's directory, with the sector each is in. NXTutors has no tie-up with any school; tutors are matched by board and syllabus, and the list is alphabetical, not a ranking.
For this board: IB tutors in Gurgaon.
More on how these boards differ: Gurugram schools and their boards.
A Knowing and understanding, B Inquiring and designing, C Processing and evaluating, and D Reflecting on the impacts of science. The four count equally, and the highest achievement level on each is 8. Teachers often adapt the descriptors for each task, so the task sheet is the clearest guide to what is expected.
It depends on how the school organises MYP sciences. Some schools keep one combined course to the end of MYP 5; others teach biology, chemistry and physics separately in the last two years. With a combined course one tutor usually works well; with separate sciences, families often add a specialist for the hardest subject.
A tutor can teach the science behind an investigation, practise hypotheses, variables, tables and graphs on a different experiment, and explain what the task descriptors ask for. A tutor should not choose the variables for an assessed task, write or reword any part of the report, or process the student's own data. The school's rules on outside help apply.
It names the independent and dependent variables, predicts the direction of the effect and gives a scientific reason. For example: if water temperature is increased, the time for a fixed mass of sugar to dissolve will decrease, because faster-moving particles collide with the crystals more often. The reason is what separates a hypothesis from a guess.
Only if the school chooses it. MYP eAssessment is optional; where a school registers, sciences are assessed through an IB on-screen examination. Otherwise MYP science grades come from the school's own assessed tasks against the four criteria.
Each Diploma science includes an internally assessed investigation, so the inquiry, data and evaluation skills built in the MYP carry straight across. The step up is in content depth and timed written papers, especially at Higher Level. MYP 5 is a good time to strengthen the science a student plans to take at HL.
Home sessions allow quick hands-on demonstrations and suit younger MYP students. Online sessions work well for data, graphs and practice write-ups, and widen the choice of specialists. A mix of both with one tutor is common, choosing home slots that avoid the evening rush on the main roads.
