IIT foundation in Gurgaon: what it can honestly mean in Classes 8 to 10

"IIT foundation" is not an exam, a board or an official syllabus. No body publishes a foundation course, and no Class 8 to 10 test feeds into JEE. What the phrase can usefully mean is this: going deeper into the maths and science your child's own board already teaches, building the habits of careful problem-solving, and knowing which school chapters the JEE syllabus later builds on. That is how we approach it at NXTutors, one to one and without crowding out the school year. This guide explains the 2026-27 Class 8, 9 and 10 syllabuses, CBSE's new optional Advanced level in Class 9, where school topics meet the NTA's JEE Main units, worked examples, the overlap with olympiads, when not to start, and how to choose a tutor in Gurugram.

What "foundation" can honestly mean

Parents in Gurugram meet the word in many forms: foundation batches, foundation books, foundation tests. Underneath, there are only three things a Class 8 to 10 student can sensibly work on:

Depth in the board syllabus

Understanding why each school method works, solving the harder exercises and the higher-order questions, and being able to explain a step rather than just repeat it. This is useful whatever the student does after Class 10.

Problem-solving habits

Reading a problem slowly, drawing a diagram, writing units, checking whether an answer is sensible, and staying with a problem that does not give way in the first attempt.

Awareness of what comes next

Knowing which Class 9 and 10 chapters the JEE Main syllabus takes further, so those chapters get extra care. It does not mean teaching Class 11 content early.

What it should not mean is a second syllabus running alongside school, or JEE-style tests for a thirteen-year-old. We make no claim that foundation work changes later exam results. Its honest value is a student who understands school maths and science properly. For the exam itself, and for Classes 11 and 12, see our JEE home tutor in Gurgaon page.

Classes 8, 9 and 10 in 2026-27: what each year contains

On CBSE, these three years now sit across two generations of NCERT books, which matters for any deeper work:

CBSE / NCERT maths and science, Classes 8 to 10, 2026-27
ClassMaths bookScience bookWhat is new or different
Class 8Ganita Prakash Part-I and Part-IICuriosityNew-series books; the last year before the Class 9 change
Class 9Ganita Manjari (Part I and Part II)ExplorationNew books, plus an optional Advanced level in maths and science
Class 10MathematicsScienceTwo Board exams; Class 10 students in 2026-27 stay on the old scheme with Basic or Standard maths

Class 9 maths in 2026-27 has 15 chapters, with Geometry (25 marks) and Algebra (20 marks) the largest units of the 80-mark paper. The algebra unit now includes Sequences and Progressions and Exploring Algebraic Identities, both of which reward the kind of depth this page is about. CBSE weights the Class 9 paper at about 54% remembering and understanding, 24% applying and 22% higher-order thinking, so even the standard paper asks for more than recall. Class 9 science is examined in four units: World of Living, Matter – Its Nature and Behaviour, Motion, Force, Work and Sound, and Earth as a System.

Each class has its own page with the chapter map and a year plan: Class 8 maths, Class 9 maths, Class 10 maths and Class 9 science, with Class 8 and Class 10 science alongside. This page covers only the deeper layer that sits above them.

CBSE's Advanced level: an official deeper option in Class 9

For CBSE families, the most important 2026-27 change for this page is that the board itself now offers a deeper route. From Class 9 in 2026-27, every student studies maths and science at the Standard level, and may add the Advanced level for one subject, for both, or skip it entirely.

  • The exam. Everyone sits the common 80-mark, three-hour paper. Advanced students also sit an extra 25-mark, one-hour paper made entirely of higher-order questions.
  • The marks. The Advanced paper's score stays outside the overall total. Reaching 50% on it earns a marksheet remark that the Advanced Level was cleared, a wording CBSE describes as tentative.
  • The timing. The Advanced papers are school-based in Class 9 in 2026-27 and become part of the Class 10 Board exam in 2027-28. The 20 marks of internal assessment are the same for both levels.
CBSE Grade 9 Advanced level, 2026-27: chapters
SubjectChapters
Mathematics Advanced (6)Sets; Logarithms; Relations and Functions; Coordinate Geometry; Combinatorics; Exploring some more Progressions
Science Advanced (10)Measurement – Foundation of Science; Understanding Motion through Experience; Newton's Laws of Motion; The Geometry of Power – Advanced Simple Machines; Work and Energy; Structure of Atom; Chemical Bonding; Mixtures and Separation of Mixtures; Microscope and Microscopy; Engineering Life: Miracles in Biotechnology

For a CBSE student who enjoys maths or science, this is the natural foundation course: it is official, it follows the school year, and its content was chosen by the board. A tutor's job is to help the student decide whether to opt in, and then to make sure the Standard syllabus stays secure while the Advanced chapters are added. Our article on CBSE Class 9 Advanced maths and science covers the choice in more detail.

Where school topics meet the JEE Main syllabus

The NTA's JEE Main 2026 syllabus has 14 maths units, 20 physics units and 20 chemistry units. Several of them start from chapters a student meets in Classes 9 and 10. Knowing this does not mean studying the JEE units now; it means giving these school chapters extra care.

Class 9–10 CBSE chapters and the JEE Main 2026 units that build on them
School chapter (CBSE, Standard or Advanced)JEE Main 2026 unit that takes it further
Sequences and Progressions (Class 9); Arithmetic Progressions (Class 10); Exploring some more Progressions (Maths Advanced)Sequence and Series
Quadratic Equations (Class 10)Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations
Coordinate Geometry (Classes 9 and 10, and Maths Advanced)Co-ordinate Geometry
Introduction to Trigonometry; Trigonometric Identities; Heights and Distances (Class 10)Trigonometry
Statistics; Probability (Classes 9 and 10)Statistics and Probability
Sets; Relations and Functions (Maths Advanced)Sets, Relations and Functions
Combinatorics (Maths Advanced)Permutations and Combinations
Measurement; Newton's Laws of Motion; Work and Energy (Science Advanced)Units and Measurements; Laws of Motion; Work, Energy and Power
Structure of Atom; Chemical Bonding (Science Advanced)Atomic Structure; Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

The pattern is clear: the Class 9 Advanced chapters line up closely with early JEE units. That is a good reason to treat the Advanced option as the foundation route on CBSE, rather than buying a separate course. For how the JEE maths units unfold in Classes 11 and 12, see our JEE maths tutor in Gurgaon page.

Deeper routes on other boards

Gurugram has a wide board mix, and each board has its own official way to go further:

  • ICSE. The ICSE Class 10 maths syllabus already includes matrices, arithmetic and geometric progressions, the factor and remainder theorems, loci and probability. Depth here means mastering these fully, with the written working ICSE expects, rather than adding anything new.
  • Cambridge IGCSE. Students who find Mathematics 0580 comfortable can look at Additional Mathematics 0606, a separate qualification with 14 topics running from functions to calculus. It is the clearest official deeper option on the Cambridge side.
  • IB MYP. The MYP runs for ages 11 to 16, uses criteria-based assessment, and offers optional on-screen eAssessment in which maths is available as both mathematics and extended mathematics. Depth here means strong investigating and communicating, not just harder sums.
  • Haryana Board. BSEH's Class 10 maths paper mirrors CBSE's seven units with identical marks and covers the 14 chapters of the NCERT Class 10 book, so the Class 10 links in the table above apply directly.

Worked mini-examples: what depth looks like

These original problems are written for this page. Each is within the school syllabus; what makes them foundation work is the second step, where the student is asked to see a pattern or a reason.

Maths: counting with a progression (Class 9–10)

How many two-digit numbers are multiples of 7, and what is their sum?

  • The smallest is 14 and the largest is 98, with common difference 7.
  • Number of terms: (98 − 14) ÷ 7 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13.
  • Sum: 13 × (14 + 98) ÷ 2 = 13 × 56 = 728.

The depth question: "Why do we add 1 when counting terms?" A student who can explain it with a small case (from 14 to 21 there are two multiples, not one) will not make the off-by-one error again.

Maths: an identity used as a tool (Class 9)

Work out 103 × 97 without multiplying directly.

  • 103 × 97 = (100 + 3)(100 − 3) = 100² − 3² = 10,000 − 9 = 9,991.

The depth question: "Which other products can you do this way?" The student learns to look for structure before calculating, which is the habit the Class 9 identities chapter is really teaching.

Physics reasoning: distance in one second (Class 9 motion)

A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 2 m/s². How far does it travel in the fifth second alone?

  • Distance in t seconds from rest: s = ½at² = t² metres here, since a = 2 m/s².
  • After 5 s: 25 m. After 4 s: 16 m. So in the fifth second alone: 25 − 16 = 9 m.
  • In each successive second the car covers 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 m, and 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 25.

The depth step is noticing the odd numbers: the sum of the first n odd numbers is n², which is exactly why distance from rest grows as t². One problem joins motion to the progressions chapter, and that kind of link is what foundation work should build.

Chemistry: ratio by atoms and by mass (Class 9 matter)

Water has two hydrogen atoms for every oxygen atom. What is the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen by mass?

  • Using atomic masses H = 1 and O = 16: mass of hydrogen = 2 × 1 = 2; mass of oxygen = 16.
  • Ratio by mass = 2 : 16 = 1 : 8.

The depth question: "Why are the two ratios different?" Separating "how many particles" from "how much mass" is the idea that later becomes the mole concept.

Habits foundation work should build

  1. Reading the whole question twice and underlining what is given and what is asked.
  2. Drawing first in geometry, motion and mixtures problems, before any calculation.
  3. Writing units on every line of a physics or chemistry calculation.
  4. Estimating before calculating, then checking the answer against the estimate.
  5. Explaining a step aloud. If the student cannot say why a step works, it is not yet understood.
  6. Staying with a hard problem for a while before asking for help, and then asking for a hint rather than the solution.
  7. Keeping an error notebook of mistakes and their causes, reviewed each week.

None of these needs JEE material. They can be practised on the school textbook's harder exercises and on CBSE's competency-based and higher-order questions.

When not to start, and mistakes to avoid

Deeper work is not right for every student at every moment. We would advise waiting, or keeping to the school syllabus, in these cases:

  • School basics are shaky. If fractions, negative numbers or simple equations still cause errors, deeper problems will only frustrate. Fix the base first.
  • The week is already full. School, transport, homework, sport and a coaching batch can leave no room. Adding more hours to a tired student rarely helps.
  • The student has no interest. Depth comes from curiosity. If the interest is the parent's alone, a lighter plan is wiser.
  • It is the Class 10 board year. With two Board exams (a main exam from mid-February and a second in May for improving up to three subjects), Class 10 deserves its own plan. Foundation work should support the board syllabus, not compete with it.

Common mistakes to avoid, on any board:

  • Using Class 11 books in Class 8 or 9, which teaches formulas without the understanding behind them.
  • Weekly ranking tests that measure speed on unfamiliar material and knock confidence.
  • Letting school marks slip while chasing harder problems; the school syllabus is the foundation.

For an all-subject view of the Class 9 year, including how foundation coaching fits a Gurugram week, see the Class 9 home tutor in Gurgaon page, and our longer article on Class 8–10 foundation for JEE and NEET in Gurgaon.

Where olympiads fit

Olympiads are the one place where Class 8 to 10 students do sit official problem-solving exams beyond the board, and the overlap with foundation work is real:

  • Junior science. IAPT conducts both junior stages, NSEJS and INJSO. According to HBCSE, the NSE syllabus for junior science is broadly CBSE up to Class X, though its questions may be harder than a Board paper.
  • Mathematics. The route starts with IOQM, a three-hour paper of 30 questions, each answered with a one- or two-digit number, then RMO (on 15 November 2026 this cycle) and INMO.

Olympiad preparation is narrower and more intense than general foundation work, and it suits students who already enjoy hard problems. Read our olympiad preparation guide for Gurgaon for the stages and how a tutor plans for them.

How a home tutor plans the year, term by term

On the CBSE and ICSE calendar the school year starts in spring, with half-yearly exams partway through; international schools may follow a different calendar, and the tutor adjusts. A plan that keeps the board first looks like this:

A foundation plan that keeps the school year first
ClassFirst termSecond term
Class 8School chapters secure; one harder problem set a week from the same chapter; habits from the list aboveAlgebra and mensuration strengthened before Class 9; a first taste of olympiad-style questions only if the student enjoys them
Class 9Standard syllabus first; decide with the school whether to take Maths or Science Advanced; if yes, Advanced chapters paced alongsideGeometry proofs, identities and motion in depth; Advanced paper practice; half-yearly gaps repaired
Class 10Board syllabus at full depth; higher-order and competency-based questions; science units in step with schoolBoard revision and full papers for the main exam; deeper work paused until after the Board exams

For Classes 8 and 9, a weekly session or two tends to suffice, because the aim is depth on what school is teaching, not extra content. The tutor keeps a short note of which chapters have been taken deeper, so nothing is repeated and nothing important is skipped.

Timing and travel in Gurugram

For students of this age, the slot matters as much as the tutor. Evening office traffic on the main roads makes late weekday travel slow, and a tired student after school, transport and homework will not do deep problem-solving well. Many families choose an early-evening slot on a quiet school day, or a weekend morning for the longer session.

  • Home sessions suit maths and science at this age: the tutor sits beside the student and sees each line as it is written. They are easiest where many tutors live nearby, for example in the sectors on our Central Gurugram zone page.
  • Hybrid plans help in newer sectors, such as those on our Southern Peripheral Road zone page: one home session for the hardest topic, one online.
  • Online sessions widen the choice of tutor who can teach the Advanced chapters or IGCSE 0606, and suit families near Sector 67 or Sector 86 who want a specific specialist.

Choosing and testing a foundation tutor

Your shortlist has two or three tutors. Choose whoever looks closest to your needs for a free demo class and watch for the following:

  1. The tutor starts from school. They ask for the textbook and the current chapter, and build the harder problems from there.
  2. The student does the thinking. The tutor asks questions and gives hints rather than solving on the board.
  3. Reasons, not tricks. Every shortcut is explained, as in the identity example above.
  4. Board awareness. The tutor knows the 2026-27 changes for your board: the new Class 9 books and Advanced option on CBSE, or 0606 on IGCSE.
  5. A sensible load. The plan fits the student's week and leaves time for school homework.

When a demo does not feel right, ask us for another matched tutor; changing later is free as well. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID. See how the ID check works.

Fees and getting started

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. A foundation tutor's rate is their own, and you can compare rates on the shortlist before booking. Our article on home tuition fees in Gurgaon covers what affects them.

When you get in touch, mention the class and board, whether the interest is maths, science or both, whether your child is taking or considering CBSE's Advanced level, your locality in Gurugram, and the school-day or weekend times that suit the family.

IIT Foundation Home Tutor in Gurgaon (Class 8–10): common questions

What is IIT foundation, and is it an exam?

It is not an exam, a board or an official syllabus. Used sensibly, it means going deeper into the maths and science of the student's own board in Classes 8 to 10, building careful problem-solving habits, and giving extra care to the school chapters that the JEE Main syllabus later builds on.

Does foundation tuition mean teaching Class 11 topics early?

No. Our tutors work from the school textbook and the current chapter, then set harder problems on the same ideas. Starting Class 11 books in Class 8 or 9 tends to teach formulas without understanding, and it can push school work aside.

What is the new CBSE Advanced level in Class 9?

From 2026-27, CBSE offers Class 9 maths and science at a Standard level and an optional Advanced level. Advanced students sit an extra 25-mark, one-hour paper of higher-order questions; those marks are not added to the total. The Advanced papers are school-based in Class 9 and reach the Class 10 Board exam from 2027-28.

Which Class 9 and 10 chapters matter most for later JEE study?

Progressions, quadratic equations, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, statistics and probability in maths, and motion, force and work in science, all lead into JEE Main 2026 units. On CBSE, the Maths Advanced chapters (such as Sets, Relations and Functions, and Combinatorics) and Science Advanced chapters line up closely with early JEE units.

My child studies ICSE or IGCSE in Gurugram. Is there a foundation route?

Yes, within each board. ICSE Class 10 maths already includes matrices, progressions and the factor theorem, so depth means mastering these with full working. On Cambridge, students comfortable with Mathematics 0580 can look at Additional Mathematics 0606, a separate qualification that runs from functions to calculus.

When is it better not to start foundation work?

When school basics are still shaky, when the week is already full with school, transport and coaching, when the interest is not the student's own, or in the Class 10 Board year, which has its own exam plan. In those cases, depth in the school syllabus alone is the wiser choice.

How many sessions a week does a Class 8 or 9 student need?

One or two a week is usually enough, because the aim is depth on what school is teaching rather than extra content. In Gurugram, an early-evening slot on a quiet school day or a weekend morning tends to work better than a late weekday session after a long day.

What does a foundation tutor cost in Gurgaon, and is the first class free?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. You see each tutor's fee before the demo, and the first class with your chosen tutor is a free demo.
