Class 9 maths tuition in Gurugram: a new CBSE syllabus, and the first half of the board course

CBSE Class 9 maths has changed for 2026-27: a new NCERT book, Ganita Manjari, a redesigned syllabus, and an optional Mathematics Advanced level with its own paper. ICSE Class 9 brings compound interest, logarithms and geometry proofs, and IGCSE and IB MYP students start the courses that lead to Grade 10. A Class 9 maths tutor helps most when they know your board's syllabus for this year, start in the first term, and plan the year as half of a two-year course. Abhinandan Tiwary, a Class 10 CBSE and ICSE maths tutor, wrote the CBSE and ICSE parts; Ajay Vatsyayan, who tutors IB and IGCSE maths, wrote the IGCSE and IB parts.

What changed in CBSE Class 9 maths for 2026-27?

CBSE's Secondary Curriculum for 2026-27 sets out five changes that matter to a Class 9 maths student:

  • A new book. NCERT's Class 9 mathematics is now Ganita Manjari, in two parts. For 2026-27, Class 10 keeps the older NCERT "Mathematics" book.
  • Two levels. Every student studies maths at the Standard level. Students may also opt for Mathematics Advanced, and may take neither, one or both of Mathematics Advanced and Science Advanced.
  • An extra paper for Advanced. All students sit the common 80-mark, 3-hour paper. Advanced students add a one-hour paper worth 25 marks, built only from higher-order (HOTS) questions on the extra chapters. The 20-mark internal assessment is the same for everyone.
  • How Advanced is reported. The Advanced score stays outside the main total. Reach 50% on that paper and the marksheet records that the Advanced level was cleared, wording that CBSE still describes as tentative.
  • Basic and Standard are ending. CBSE is discontinuing the Mathematics Basic/Standard choice from 2026-27. This year's Class 10 students finish under the old rules, so Basic remains open to them.

Two older rules still apply. Classes 9 and 10 are a composite course, so a subject taken in Class 9 should be one the student will continue in Class 10. And Class 9 is assessed by the school, following a scheme similar to the Class 10 Board examination. Advanced papers are school-based in Class 9 this year and become part of the Class 10 Board examination from 2027-28, so today's Class 9 students are the first whose Class 10 Board exam can include Mathematics Advanced.

The CBSE Class 9 Standard syllabus, unit by unit

The Standard paper carries 80 marks. The school adds 20 more through the year: half from pen-paper tests and multiple assessment, a quarter from the portfolio, a quarter from maths lab work. CBSE's course structure for 2026-27:

CBSE Class 9 Mathematics 2026-27 (Standard): units, chapters and marks
UnitChaptersMarksContent a tutor should watch
Number SystemNumber System07Proving √2 and √3 irrational; decimal forms of rational numbers; the square root spiral
AlgebraIntroduction to Polynomials; Sequences and Progressions; Exploring Algebraic Identities; Linear Equations in Two Variables20AP and GP nth terms (new at this level); identities seen through area models; solving a pair of equations by graph, substitution and elimination
Coordinate GeometryCoordinate Geometry04Distance and midpoint formulas; checking whether three points are collinear
GeometryIntroduction to Euclid's Geometry: Axioms and Postulates; Lines and Angles; Triangles – Congruence Theorems; 4-gons (Quadrilaterals); Circles25Proofs: congruence conditions and why SSA fails in general, the midpoint theorem, medians meeting in the ratio 2:1, cyclic quadrilaterals
MensurationArea and Perimeter; Surface Area and Volume14Heron's formula, area of a sector, Brahmagupta's formula for a cyclic 4-gon; solids from cuboid to sphere, including pyramids
Statistics and ProbabilityStatistics; Introduction to Probability10Weighted averages and stacked bar graphs; empirical and theoretical probability with tree diagrams

Geometry and algebra together hold 45 of the 80 marks and get the most suggested teaching time. The paper is weighted about 54% to remembering and understanding, 24% to applying and 22% to analysing, evaluating and creating. The syllabus also includes Indian Knowledge System content, such as Brahmagupta's quadratic formula, Madhava's series for π and Aryabhata's introduction of sine and cosine. Two topics that this year's Class 10 syllabus also teaches, progressions and the area of a sector, now appear in the new Class 9 course.

Mathematics Advanced: what it covers and who should take it

CBSE's Grade 9 Advanced material has six chapters, each a step beyond the Standard course:

CBSE Mathematics at Advanced Level (optional), Grade 9, 2026-27
ChapterWhat it involves
SetsRepresenting sets, cardinality, power sets, Venn diagrams, complements
LogarithmsLogarithms as the inverse of powers; the laws of logarithms; common logarithms; solving logarithmic equations
Relations and FunctionsOrdered pairs, Cartesian products, relations, functions and their graphs
Coordinate GeometryReflections, slope, parallel and perpendicular lines, forms of the equation of a line
CombinatoricsSystematic counting and factorials
Exploring some more ProgressionsProgressions beyond the Standard chapter

Sets, relations and functions appear as a unit in the JEE Main 2026 maths syllabus, which gives a sense of the level. The option suits a student who finds Standard maths comfortable and enjoys harder problems, not one who is struggling: the Advanced paper is all higher-order questions, and its hours come out of the main course. Advanced marks do not change the total, so the choice is about learning, not marks. Our explainer on choosing CBSE Class 9 Advanced walks through the choice, and students heading towards JEE can see how the two fit together on our IIT foundation tutors in Gurgaon page. For the board as a whole, see CBSE maths tutors in Gurgaon.

ICSE Class 9 maths: breadth, tables and full working

CISCE's Mathematics syllabus for the 2027 examination gives Class 9 one 3-hour, 80-mark paper and 20 marks of internal assessment, from at least two assignments set by the teacher. Today's Class 9 students sit the 2028 examination, whose syllabus CISCE published in January 2026; it still places logarithms and trigonometry in Class 9, and some questions may need logarithmic and trigonometric tables. Check the 2028 document for any other change. In the 2027 document, the Class 9 content is wider than CBSE's in several places:

ICSE Class 9 Mathematics (2027 examination syllabus): main areas
AreaTopics
Pure arithmeticRational and irrational numbers, surds, rationalising the denominator
Commercial mathematicsCompound interest, including half-yearly compounding, growth and depreciation
AlgebraExpansions such as (a ± b)³; factorisation including a³ ± b³; simultaneous equations by elimination, substitution and cross-multiplication; indices; logarithms
GeometryCongruency, mid-point and equal intercept theorems, Pythagoras, parallelogram and area theorems, constructions, chord and arc properties
Statistics and mensurationFrequency tables and polygons, mean and median; Heron's formula, circles, cubes and cuboids
Trigonometry and coordinate geometryRatios and standard angles, complementary angles; graphical solution of equations, distance formula

ICSE students therefore meet logarithms and trigonometry in Class 9; on CBSE, the trigonometry chapters come in Class 10 and logarithms appear in Class 9 only in the Advanced material. A tutor should mark every exercise as an examiner would, working included. Our ICSE maths tutors in Gurgaon page covers Class 10 and ISC.

IGCSE Grade 9 and IB MYP Year 4

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)

For schools that run IGCSE over Grades 9 and 10, Grade 9 is where 0580 teaching begins. The syllabus for 2025 to 2027 spans nine content areas, from number and algebra with graphs through trigonometry, vectors and transformations, to probability and statistics. It has two tiers: Core (Papers 1 and 3, grades C to G) and Extended (Papers 2 and 4, grades A* to E), and one paper at each tier is non-calculator. Exams run in June and November, with a March series in India. A Grade 9 tutor should teach to Extended where realistic, since Core caps the grade, and keep non-calculator arithmetic in every session. Our IGCSE maths tutors in Gurgaon page goes further.

IB Middle Years Programme

Where a school runs the whole MYP, which spans ages 11 to 16, Grade 9 is normally Year 4. Maths is assessed against criteria rather than by totals, and MYP eAssessment is optional. A tutor should work from the unit's task sheet and criteria, help the student investigate and explain, and never write assessed work.

Haryana Board (BSEH) students

For 2026-27, BSEH's Class 10 Mathematics paper is 80 marks plus 20 of internal assessment, and its units follow the fourteen chapters of the NCERT Class 10 book, from Real Numbers to Probability. Class 9 is where the base for those chapters is laid; ask the tutor to plan from BSEH's own Class 9 syllabus and the school's chapter order. Our Haryana Board tutors in Gurgaon page covers the board in more detail. See the schools families ask about below.

Where Class 9 students usually slip

  • Proof without reasons. Students reach the right angle or the right pair of congruent triangles but write no reason for each step. On every board, Class 9 geometry marks the reasoning.
  • Choosing the congruence condition. Two sides and a non-included angle look like enough. CBSE now asks students to explain why SSA is not, in general, a valid condition.
  • Setting up two equations. Students solve a given pair but cannot build one from a word problem. Name both unknowns in words first.
  • Mensuration slips. Diameter used as radius, or square units on a volume.
  • Logarithm laws misapplied. For ICSE and CBSE Advanced students: writing log(a + b) as log a + log b. The product law is for products only.

Four worked examples at Class 9 level

These are original practice problems, not taken from any textbook or paper.

1. A pair of linear equations (all boards)

Two adult tickets and three child tickets cost ₹850; one adult and two child tickets cost ₹500. Find each price.
Let the adult price be a and the child price c. Then 2a + 3c = 850 and a + 2c = 500. From the second, a = 500 − 2c. Substituting: 2(500 − 2c) + 3c = 850, so 1,000 − c = 850 and c = 150. Then a = 500 − 300 = 200.
Adult ₹200, child ₹150. Check: 400 + 450 = 850 and 200 + 300 = 500.

2. Heron's formula (CBSE and ICSE)

Find the area of a triangle with sides 13 cm, 14 cm and 15 cm.
Semi-perimeter s = (13 + 14 + 15) ÷ 2 = 21. Area = √[21 × (21 − 13) × (21 − 14) × (21 − 15)] = √(21 × 8 × 7 × 6) = √7,056 = 84 cm².
Writing s first, then each bracket, earns method marks even if the final root is miscalculated.

3. A logarithmic equation (CBSE Advanced, ICSE)

Solve log₃(2x + 1) = 2.
Rewrite in power form: 2x + 1 = 3² = 9, so x = 4.
Check that the logarithm is defined: 2(4) + 1 = 9, which is positive, so x = 4 stands. Checking the domain is the habit the Advanced material insists on.

4. Compound versus simple interest (ICSE)

Find the difference between compound and simple interest on ₹10,000 for 2 years at 10% a year, compounded annually.
Amount after 2 years = 10,000 × 1.1 × 1.1 = ₹12,100, so CI = ₹2,100. SI = 10,000 × 10 × 2 ÷ 100 = ₹2,000.
Difference = ₹100, which is the interest on the first year's interest of ₹1,000.

How a home tutor plans Class 9 maths, term by term

A Class 9 maths plan with a home tutor
WhenThe tutor's focus
April to JuneDiagnose Class 8 gaps in identities, exponents and percentages; start number system and polynomials; for CBSE, settle whether Advanced is right
July to SeptemberAlgebra chapters and the first geometry proofs; written reasons on every step; school unit tests and half-yearly reviewed line by line
October to DecemberCircles, quadrilaterals and mensuration; for ICSE, compound interest and logarithms; internal-assessment work kept on time, done by the student
January to MarchStatistics and probability; timed papers in the board's format; a written list of topics to secure before Class 10

Two sessions a week suit most Class 9 students; a third helps with CBSE Advanced or after a change of board. IGCSE and MYP calendars differ by school, so the tutor follows the school's unit plan.

Plan one year ahead. Under CBSE's two-exam scheme for Class 10, every student sits the main Board exam from mid-February, and a May exam lets students who passed improve up to three subjects, maths among them. Gaps carried out of Class 9 eat into that year, which is why our Class 10 maths tutors in Gurgaon page starts from a secure Class 9. For the science half of this year, see Class 9 science tutors in Gurgaon.

How to test a Class 9 maths tutor in the free demo

  • Ask about 2026-27. A CBSE tutor should know Ganita Manjari, the new chapters such as Sequences and Progressions, and how the Advanced paper works. An ICSE tutor should know where logarithms and compound interest sit.
  • Watch a proof. Ask the tutor to take your child through one congruence or circle proof. Does the student end up writing the reasons?
  • Check the marking. Does the tutor spot lost method marks on a recent test?
  • Ask for a plan to Class 10. A good tutor talks about the two years, not only the next test.

If the fit is wrong, the next matched tutor gives a demo instead, and a later change of tutor is free too. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID. See how we check tutors, or book a free demo class.

Timing Class 9 maths around a Gurugram week

Class 9 evenings fill up with school, coaching and homework, so fix maths on set evenings, early enough that proofs are not left for a tired hour. On Golf Course Extension Road, Sohna Road and the Dwarka Expressway, the side of the road a tutor starts from matters as much as their sector.

Around Sector 57 in the Golf Course Extension Road zone, and in South City 1 in Central Gurugram, families can usually find tutors for CBSE, ICSE and IGCSE within easy reach for home sessions. Along the Dwarka Expressway, in sectors such as Sector 106, fewer specialist tutors live nearby, so a weekend home class with an online session midweek is common. Online Class 9 maths works if the tutor sees the student's working live, through a tablet or a camera over the notebook.

Fees and getting started

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Every tutor quotes a personal rate, visible on your shortlist ahead of the demo. Board, travel at your slot and weekly frequency all shift it; the Gurgaon home tuition fees guide breaks this down.

Share four things: the board, whether CBSE Advanced is on the table, which chapters are hurting marks, and where in Gurugram you live along with free evenings. We return two or three matched maths tutors and you choose who takes the free demo. Elsewhere on the site: maths home tutors in Gurgaon across all classes, Class 9 home tutors in Gurgaon for every subject this year, Class 8 maths tutors in Gurgaon for the year before, and the national Class 9 maths tutor guide. Sector-by-sector listings sit on our home tutors in Gurgaon page.

Schools families ask about

Parents often tell us their child's school so the tutor can follow the same board and books. These Gurugram schools follow CBSE, ICSE and ISC, IB or Cambridge IGCSE, as shown on each school's own site or its board's directory, with the sector each is in. NXTutors has no tie-up with any school; tutors are matched by board and syllabus, and the list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Class 9 Maths Home Tutor in Gurgaon (Gurugram): common questions

What does opting for CBSE Mathematics Advanced in Class 9 involve for a Gurgaon student?

Opting for CBSE Mathematics Advanced in Class 9 means a Gurgaon student writes an extra one-hour, 25-mark paper of harder questions besides the 80-mark main paper. It is an optional second tier introduced for 2026-27, above the Standard course everyone takes. Its six chapters run from Sets and Logarithms to Combinatorics and a further chapter on progressions.

Do Mathematics Advanced marks count towards a Gurgaon Class 9 student's CBSE result?

No, Mathematics Advanced marks do not count towards a Gurgaon Class 9 student's main CBSE total, because the paper is reported separately. Scoring at least half its marks earns a marksheet line saying the Advanced level was cleared, in wording CBSE calls tentative. In Class 9 the school sets and marks it; the Board takes it over in Class 10 from 2027-28.

Which book does CBSE Class 9 maths use in Gurgaon in 2026-27?

CBSE Class 9 maths in Gurgaon uses NCERT's new book Ganita Manjari, in two parts, in 2026-27. The syllabus has 15 chapters across six units, including Sequences and Progressions, 4-gons (Quadrilaterals) and Introduction to Probability. For now, Class 10 continues with the earlier NCERT Mathematics book.

Can a Gurgaon Class 9 student still choose Mathematics Basic?

No, a Gurgaon student beginning Class 9 in 2026-27 cannot choose Mathematics Basic, because CBSE is discontinuing the Basic and Standard system. The 2026-27 Class 10 batch completes the old scheme, Basic included. New Class 9 students take Standard, with Advanced available as an extra.

How is ICSE Class 9 maths different from CBSE Class 9 maths in Gurgaon?

ICSE Class 9 maths in Gurgaon is broader than CBSE, adding compound interest, logarithms, (a ± b)³ expansions, a³ ± b³ factorisation and an introduction to trigonometry. Some questions may need log and trig tables, and the 80-mark paper has 20 internal marks from at least two assignments. CBSE Class 9 has no trigonometry chapter, and logarithms appear only in its optional Advanced material.

Can a Gurgaon tutor teach IGCSE 0580 or MYP maths in Grade 9?

Yes, a Gurgaon tutor can teach IGCSE Mathematics 0580 or MYP maths in Grade 9, and we match on the exact course. For IGCSE we look for tutors who teach to the Extended tier where realistic and keep non-calculator practice going. For the MYP the tutor starts from the task sheet and the criteria, and never writes work that will be assessed.

How often should a Gurgaon Class 9 student see a maths tutor?

Two maths sessions a week suit most Gurgaon Class 9 students working through the new syllabus. A third helps a student taking Mathematics Advanced, or one catching up after a change of board or school. Starting in April or May, before the half-yearly marks arrive, leaves time to fix gaps.

What does a Class 9 maths tutor cost in Gurgaon?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each Class 9 maths tutor in Gurgaon sets their own fee, listed for every name on your shortlist before the free demo.

How do I get Class 9 maths tutors shortlisted in Gurgaon?

To get Class 9 maths tutors shortlisted in Gurgaon, send NXTutors the board, whether your child takes Advanced, weak chapters, your sector and your free slots. We shortlist two or three matched tutors, with each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.

Does Class 9 maths in Gurgaon need a tutor at the table, or will online do?

Class 9 maths tuition in Gurgaon works well at home while proofs and step-by-step algebra are new, because the tutor sees each line of reasoning. Online suits practice and doubt sessions once the working is tidy and on camera. Families in newer sectors often pair a weekend home visit with a weekday online class.
