Class 8 science tuition in Gurgaon (Gurugram): closing the gaps before Class 9

A Class 8 science tutor earns their fee by doing one job well: making sure nothing your child needs in Class 9 is still shaky by March. Class 8 is the year the particle model of matter, forces measured in newtons, pressure, concentration and mirrors all arrive, and it is the first year many science answers need a number with a unit. Class 9 then splits science into chapters that read like separate physics, chemistry and biology courses, and for ICSE students into three separate subjects. This guide sets out what the 2026-27 NCERT Class 8 book covers, where each chapter leads, where students slip, three worked examples, how ICSE, IB MYP and Cambridge families should think about this year, and how a Gurugram home tutor plans it term by term. The author, Aaditya Kashyap, teaches science from Class 6 to the Class 10 board year for CBSE and ICSE families through NXTutors.

What Class 8 science covers in 2026-27, and where each chapter leads

CBSE schools teach Class 8 science from NCERT's Curiosity (Hindi edition: Jigyasa). The Grade 8 book has 13 chapters, and NCERT describes it as integrating biology, chemistry, physics and earth science rather than keeping them in separate parts. A tutor should read the table below as a map of dependencies: each chapter feeds something specific in Class 9 or Class 10, and the right-hand column is where gaps will show up later.

Schools follow their own order through the book, so a tutor should work from the school's timetable and fill in around it. For a chapter-by-chapter national view, see the Class 8 science tutor guide. For the all-subject picture of middle school, see Class 6 to 8 home tutors in Gurgaon.

The step up from Class 7, and the base Class 9 expects

In Class 7 a good answer usually explains what happens. In Class 8 it increasingly has to say how much, and why. If your child coped with Class 7 by reading and remembering, the new demands can come as a surprise. Our Class 7 science tutors in Gurgaon page covers the year before. The changes that matter most:

  • Numbers with units. Force in newtons, pressure in pascals, concentration as a percentage. A bare number is now an incomplete answer.
  • A model, not a description. The particle model asks a child to explain dissolving, diffusion and changes of state with particles they cannot see.
  • Precise categories. Element, compound and mixture are different things with different tests, and students lose marks for using them loosely.
  • Ray diagrams. Mirrors and lenses need ruled lines, arrows and correct angles, not sketches.

The Class 9 teacher will assume a student can rearrange a simple formula, keep units consistent, picture matter as particles, and draw a labelled diagram from memory. Those four abilities, more than any single chapter, decide how the first Class 9 unit test goes. The arithmetic side of this overlaps with maths, so if numericals keep failing at the rearranging step, look at our Class 8 maths tutors in Gurgaon page as well.

Where Class 8 students typically slip, and what to do about it

Force and pressure treated as the same idea

Students say a sharp knife "has more force". It does not; it spreads the same force over a smaller area. A tutor should make the child state force and area separately every time, before any calculation.

Mixtures called compounds

Salt water is a mixture; salt itself is a compound. The test is whether the parts keep their own properties and can be separated by physical means. Sorting ten household substances into the three groups fixes this quickly.

Concentration worked on the wrong total

Dividing the solute by the solvent, instead of by the whole solution, is the most common slip in this chapter. It is shown in the second worked example below.

Microorganisms learnt as a list of names

A child who memorises examples but cannot say what makes a microbe useful or harmful struggles with the Class 9 cell chapter. Ask "how does it get its food, and what does that do to us?" for each example.

Image distances in mirrors

Students give the image's distance from the object when asked for its distance from the mirror, or the reverse. Drawing the mirror line first and labelling both distances prevents most of these errors.

Skipping the "investigate" questions

The activity and question boxes in Curiosity are where reasoning is practised. Children who skip them to reach the exercises arrive in Class 9 able to recall but not to explain.

Three worked mini-examples at Class 8 level

Practice problems written for this page, the sort a tutor gives once a chapter is done. Each follows one layout: data with units, formula, substitution, answer with unit, then one sentence on what it means.

1. Pressure: same box, different face

A packed carton weighs 600 N. Its largest face measures 0.5 m by 0.4 m and its smallest face measures 0.4 m by 0.25 m. Find the pressure on the floor in each position.

  • Largest face: area = 0.5 × 0.4 = 0.2 m². Pressure = force ÷ area = 600 ÷ 0.2 = 3,000 Pa.
  • Smallest face: area = 0.4 × 0.25 = 0.1 m². Pressure = 600 ÷ 0.1 = 6,000 Pa.
  • Meaning: the force did not change. Halving the area doubled the pressure, which is why a nail has a point.

2. Concentration: divide by the solution, not the water

20 g of salt is dissolved in 180 g of water. What is the concentration of the solution by mass?

  • Mass of solution = 20 + 180 = 200 g.
  • Concentration = (mass of solute ÷ mass of solution) × 100 = (20 ÷ 200) × 100 = 10%.
  • The common wrong answer, 20 ÷ 180 × 100 ≈ 11.1%, divides by the solvent alone. Writing "mass of solution =" as a separate line stops it.

3. Plane mirror: two distances, not one

A child stands 3 m in front of a plane mirror and then walks 1 m towards it. How far is the image from the child before and after?

  • Before: the image is 3 m behind the mirror, so it is 3 + 3 = 6 m from the child.
  • After: the child is 2 m from the mirror, so the image is 2 + 2 = 4 m from the child.
  • Meaning: moving 1 m closer brought the image 2 m closer. Students who answer "5 m" have forgotten that the image moves too.

ICSE, IB MYP and Cambridge students in Class 8

ICSE: prepare for three subjects

ICSE schools choose their own Class 8 science books, so the tutor works from the school's book and test papers. What matters is the next step: in Classes 9 and 10 the board treats Physics, Chemistry and Biology as distinct subjects, each with an 80-mark CISCE paper plus 20 internal marks for practical work. Class 9 Physics opens with Measurements and Experimentation, Motion in One Dimension and Laws of Motion; Chemistry with The Language of Chemistry and Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonding. Units, formulae and symbols learnt now pay off directly. See our ICSE home tutors in Gurgaon page.

IB MYP: criteria, not totals

The IB Middle Years Programme runs for students aged 11 to 16, and sciences are assessed against criteria rather than added-up marks, and MYP eAssessment is optional. A tutor helping a Grade 8 MYP student should start from the task sheet and its criteria, help the student plan and reason, and never write the work. Our IB MYP science tutors in Gurgaon page covers this in depth.

Heading for IGCSE

IGCSE is designed by Cambridge for 14 to 16 year olds, which puts the course just beyond Class 8 in most schools. The sciences there are numerical and practical from the start, which makes the Class 8 habits in this guide the right preparation whatever book the school uses this year.

CBSE families will find the board-level view, from Class 6 to the Class 10 paper, on our CBSE science tutors in Gurgaon page.

Planning the Class 8 science year with a home tutor

Most Gurugram CBSE and ICSE schools start the session in April, run a first term to the half-yearly exams and a second term to the finals. A tutor plans around those two exam points and keeps a short list of "Class 9 must-haves" open all year.

A Class 8 science plan with a home tutor
WhenScience focusWhat the tutor checks
April to JuneThe chapters school opens with; a quick audit of Class 7 basics (units, simple diagrams, reading a table)Can the child write a numerical in four lines: data, formula, substitution, answer with unit?
July to SeptemberMatter chapters and forces as they come up; first periodic tests; the half-yearlyElement, compound and mixture used correctly; force and pressure kept apart
October to DecemberLight, electricity, solutions; projects and activity records due in schoolRay diagrams ruled and labelled; concentration worked on the whole solution
January to MarchRevision across the book; final examsA written list of weak chapters to repair over the summer, before the Class 9 course starts

In Class 8 science, one or two weekly visits normally suffice, with extra ones only before exams or during a repair phase. The summer after Class 8 is the easiest time to fix gaps: there is no new syllabus pressing in. Our Class 9 science tutors in Gurgaon page shows what that summer is preparing for, including CBSE's new Class 9 book and the optional Science Advanced level.

Foundation courses and the junior science olympiad: when to add them

Class 8 is when many Gurugram families are first offered "foundation" programmes. The order that works is school science secure first, depth second. A child who scores well, finishes homework alone and enjoys hard questions can take on extra problem-solving. A child still mixing up force and pressure needs the basics before anything else.

For students who want a challenge, the junior science olympiad route (NSEJS and INJSO) is run by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers. HBCSE describes the National Standard Examinations as broadly following the CBSE syllabus, up to Class X for junior science, with harder questions. That makes good Class 8 understanding the real base for it. For deeper maths and science alongside school work, from Class 8 to Class 10, read about IIT foundation tutors in Gurgaon.

Home, online or hybrid: fitting Class 8 science into a Gurugram week

Class 8 children often have long school bus rides and evening activities, and after-school congestion around NH-48, Sohna Road and Golf Course Road can make a tutor's arrival unpredictable. Plan slots around the slow hours rather than the quiet ones. In practice:

  • Home sessions suit Class 8 well. Diagrams are drawn at the table, the notebook is checked page by page, and safe activities with water, salt, a mirror or a torch can be done together. In established areas such as Sector 14, South City 1 and Sector 50, more tutors live close by and weekday evening slots are easier to fill.
  • Online sessions work for a focused child, provided a phone camera over the page or a writing tablet lets the tutor follow every line.
  • Hybrid is the usual answer in newer sectors off Golf Course Extension Road and the Southern Peripheral Road, such as Sector 67: one home session at the weekend and one short online check-in midweek with the same tutor.

Choosing a Class 8 science tutor: what to check in the free demo

You get two or three matched tutors and choose one for a free first class. Treat that class as a check on the Class 8 skills described above:

  1. Did the tutor ask for the school book and the last test paper? A plan should start from real work, not a generic chapter list.
  2. Did they set one short numerical and watch the layout? Data, formula, substitution and unit, in that order.
  3. Did they make your child explain with particles or forces, rather than read out a definition?
  4. Did your child draw? A ray diagram or a labelled microbe, made by the child, not shown on a screen.
  5. Could they say what Class 9 will expect, for your board, and which gaps they saw today?

Another demo with the next shortlisted tutor is arranged if the first is not right, and a later switch is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID. The steps are set out on our ID check page.

Class 8 science tuition fees in Gurgaon, and next steps

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. The fee belongs to the tutor, and it is on the shortlist before you book a demo. Middle-school science usually sits in the lower part of that range; the guide to home tuition fees in Gurgaon covers the details.

Share the board, the Class 8 topics giving trouble, your sector and some possible evening or weekend times, and book a free demo class.

Schools families ask about

Parents often tell us their child's school so the tutor can follow the same board and books. These Gurugram schools follow CBSE, ICSE and ISC, IB or Cambridge IGCSE, as shown on each school's own site or its board's directory, with the sector each is in. NXTutors has no tie-up with any school; tutors are matched by board and syllabus, and the list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Class 8 Science Home Tutor in Gurgaon (Gurugram): common questions

Which NCERT book do CBSE schools in Gurgaon use for Class 8 science in 2026-27?

CBSE schools in Gurgaon use NCERT's Curiosity, the Grade 8 science textbook (Hindi edition Jigyasa), for Class 8 in 2026-27. It has 13 chapters, from Exploring the Investigative World of Science to Our Home: Earth, a Unique Life Sustaining Planet. It mixes biology, chemistry, physics and earth science rather than splitting them into parts.

Is Class 8 too early to start science tuition in Gurgaon?

Class 8 is not too early to start science tuition in Gurgaon if there is a clear reason. It is the year numericals with units, the particle model of matter, pressure and ray diagrams arrive, and Class 9 assumes all of them. A weekly session or two spent closing those gaps costs far less effort than repairing them in the middle of Class 9.

Which Class 8 science chapters lead into Class 9 for Gurgaon students?

The matter chapters lead most directly into Class 9 for Gurgaon students, feeding the Class 9 chapters on mixtures and the atom. Those are particulate nature of matter; elements, compounds and mixtures; and solutes, solvents and solutions. Exploring Forces leads into motion and the laws of motion, The Invisible Living World into the cell and tissues, and light and electricity return in Class 10.

How is Class 8 science different in a Gurgaon ICSE school?

Class 8 science in a Gurgaon ICSE school follows the school's own books, so the tutor works from those and the school's test papers. The bigger change comes next year: from Class 9, ICSE studies and examines Physics, Chemistry and Biology as three subjects, each with an 80-mark paper and 20 marks of practical internal assessment. Class 8 is the time to secure units, symbols and diagrams.

Should a Gurgaon Class 8 student join an IIT foundation course or the junior science olympiad?

A Gurgaon Class 8 student should add an IIT foundation course or the junior science olympiad only once school science is secure. A child who scores well and enjoys hard problems can add depth; one still confusing force and pressure needs the basics first. HBCSE describes the junior science paper, NSEJS, as broadly following CBSE up to Class X, with harder questions.

Can a Gurgaon Class 8 student share one tutor for science and maths numericals?

A Gurgaon Class 8 student can often share one tutor for science and maths, because the subjects meet in numericals: rearranging a formula, working with decimals and keeping units. If maths is the clear weak point, a maths specialist plus a weekly science tutor can work better than one general tutor.

Are home or online classes better for Class 8 science in Gurugram?

Home classes suit most Class 8 science students in Gurugram, because diagrams and notebooks are checked at the table and simple, safe activities can be done together. Online suits a focused child with the notebook on camera throughout. In newer sectors with fewer tutors nearby, many families use a weekend home session and a midweek online one.

What is the fee for Class 8 science tuition in Gurgaon?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each Class 8 science tutor in Gurgaon sets the fee shown on your shortlist, and the first class with your chosen tutor is a free demo.

How does a Gurgaon family get a Class 8 science tutor through NXTutors?

A Gurgaon family gets a Class 8 science tutor through NXTutors by sending the board, the chapters that worry them, the sector and free slots. We shortlist two or three matched tutors, with each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.
