Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your sector: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

CBSE science in Gurugram now runs on three generations of NCERT book at once: Curiosity in Classes 6 to 8, the new Exploration in Class 9, and the established Science textbook in Class 10. Class 9 also gained an optional Science Advanced level in 2026-27. A CBSE science tutor therefore has to know which book your child holds, how the school marks practical work, and how CBSE writes its competency-based questions. This guide walks up the ladder class by class, explains internal assessment and the lab list, works three short examples (a numerical, a balanced equation and a labelled diagram), and sets out how a tutor plans the year. The guide comes from Aaditya Kashyap, a CBSE and ICSE science tutor on NXTutors for Classes 6 to 10.
Each rung asks something different of the student, and of the tutor. This is the 2026-27 picture from NCERT's textbook list and CBSE's curriculum documents:
| Class | NCERT book | How it is assessed | What the tutor builds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6, 7, 8 | Curiosity (Hindi: Jigyasa) | School tests and activities; no Board exam | Observation, vocabulary, first units and graphs |
| 9 | Exploration (Hindi: Anveshan), plus optional Science Advanced | 80-mark school exam plus 20 internal marks; Advanced students sit an extra 25-mark paper | Atoms and valency, motion numericals, cells and tissues, lab method |
| 10 | Science | 80-mark Board paper plus 20 internal marks; two Board exams from 2026 | Equations, diagrams, numericals and case-based answers under time |
The class pages go deeper on each rung: Class 6, Class 7, Class 8, Class 9 and Class 10 science tutors in Gurgaon. This page is about what stays constant across them: the CBSE way of teaching and marking science.
NCERT's science book for each of Classes 6, 7 and 8 is Curiosity. The series is built around questions, activities and observation more than long passages to learn, and school tests in CBSE schools increasingly follow that lead: "what would happen if…", "explain what you observe". The content runs in familiar strands: matter and materials, the living world and the human body, and forces, energy, light and electricity at a simple level.
What a middle-school tutor should build, rung by rung:
In these years a weekly session, or two at most, does the job. Plenty of Curiosity activities work at home with kitchen materials; heat sources, concentrated acids and wall-socket electricity are for the school lab only.
Class 9 is where CBSE science changes most this year. NCERT's new book, Exploration, replaces the old Class 9 textbook, and CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum groups its chapters into four units for the 80-mark annual paper. CBSE lists the chapters by number only, so we do the same rather than guess titles:
| Unit | Exploration chapters | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| World of Living | 2, 3, 11, 12 | 27 |
| Matter – Its Nature and Behaviour | 5, 8, 9 | 25 |
| Motion, Force, Work and Sound | 4, 6, 7, 10 | 23 |
| Earth as a System | 13 | 5 |
| Internal assessment, earned in school (see below) | 20 | |
The practical consequence: a sibling's notes, last year's guide books and many online question banks follow the old book's order and content. A tutor should teach from the current NCERT book and the 2026-27 CBSE curriculum, and check each worksheet against them. Students entering Class 9 this year also take a compulsory third language (R3), assessed by the school, which squeezes the timetable; plan science sessions with that in mind.
Starting with this session's Class 9, CBSE runs Science and Maths on two levels. Standard is compulsory; Advanced is an add-on that a student can pick in Science, in Maths, in both or in neither. The common 80-mark paper (3 hours) stays the same for all. In addition, an Advanced student writes a separate 1-hour paper worth 25 marks, entirely higher-order questions on the extra chapters. This cohort carries the Advanced option into the Class X Board exam in 2027-28.
The Grade 9 Science Advanced syllabus has ten chapters: Measurement – Foundation of Science; Understanding Motion through Experience; Newton's Laws of Motion; The Geometry of Power – Advanced Simple Machines; Work and Energy; Structure of Atom; Chemical Bonding; Mixtures and Separation of Mixtures; Microscope and Microscopy; and Engineering Life: Miracles in Biotechnology.
Two details change how families should think about it. The Advanced score sits outside the main total: clearing 50% earns only a note on the marksheet (wording CBSE describes as tentative). And internal assessment has one level for everybody. Advanced therefore suits a child who already finds Standard science comfortable and wants stretch, often with JEE, NEET or olympiad plans; it will not lift a weak main score. For the pros and cons in Gurugram terms, read should your child take Class 9 Advanced?; the maths side is covered by our CBSE maths tutors in Gurgaon.
The final rung is the NCERT Science book and the first Board exam: five units in an 80-mark paper, half of it chemistry and biology, with 20 marks earned in school. A few chapters are taught but kept out of the Board paper, and a May sitting now allows improvement. Unit marks, those exclusions and the ICSE, IGCSE and Haryana Board comparison sit on our Class 10 science page; reactions, diagrams and formulae chapter by chapter are in the CBSE Class 10 science notes.
In Classes 9 and 10 the school awards 20 of the 100 science marks. CBSE divides them evenly, 5 apiece, between the portfolio, periodic tests, "multiple assessment" and practical work, which CBSE calls subject enrichment. The curriculum asks schools to run practicals alongside the theory rather than in a year-end rush, and its prescribed books include CBSE's Assessment of Practical Skills in Science and the NCERT Laboratory Manual.
| Class 9 (selected) | Class 10 (selected) |
|---|---|
| True solutions, suspensions and colloids compared (including the Tyndall effect) | pH of everyday samples with pH paper or universal indicator |
| Separating mixtures: separating funnel, paper chromatography, sublimation, coagulation | Classifying combination, decomposition, displacement and double displacement reactions |
| Verifying the law of conservation of mass | Ranking Zn, Fe, Cu and Al by reactivity from salt solutions |
| Stained mounts of onion peel and cheek cells, with labelled diagrams | V–I graph for a resistor; resistors in series and parallel |
| Checking Newton's second law (trolley, pulley, hanging masses) | Focal lengths: concave mirror, convex lens |
| Distance–time and velocity–time graphs on an inclined plane | Leaf peel to show stomata; dicot seed embryo |
Practical knowledge is also tested in the theory paper, as lab-based questions: why a step is done, what is observed, what a wrong reading would mean, which precaution was missed. A home tutor cannot run the school lab, but can rehearse every experiment in five parts (aim, labelled set-up, readings table, conclusion, precautions), so the student walks into the lab knowing what to look for and writes the record properly afterwards. That record and the portfolio are marks a student controls fully; they should never be left to the last week.
For Classes 9 and 10 alike, CBSE's science question design gives 50% of the marks to knowing and understanding, 30% to applying, and 20% to formulating, analysing, evaluating and creating; around 33% of questions carry an internal choice. Separately, CBSE reckons roughly half its Board questions are now competency-focused. The curriculum even lists the verbs that signal each level, and they make a handy checklist:
Question types include objective and assertion–reasoning items, short and long answers, and source-, case- and passage-based questions. A tutor who teaches students to underline the command verb before answering removes a large share of "I knew it but wrote the wrong thing" errors.
A cyclist speeds up uniformly from 5 m/s to 25 m/s in 4 s. Find the acceleration and the distance covered.
a = (v − u)/t = (25 − 5)/4 = 5 m/s². s = ut + ½at² = (5 × 4) + ½ × 5 × 16 = 20 + 40 = 60 m. Check with v² − u² = 2as: 625 − 25 = 600 = 2 × 5 × 60. Units on every line.
2.08 g of barium chloride reacts completely with 1.42 g of sodium sulphate in solution, giving 2.33 g of white barium sulphate precipitate. Write the equation and find the mass of sodium chloride formed.
BaCl₂(aq) + Na₂SO₄(aq) → BaSO₄(s) + 2NaCl(aq). Mass is conserved: 2.08 + 1.42 = 3.50 g in total, so sodium chloride = 3.50 − 2.33 = 1.17 g. The same reaction appears as a double displacement in Class 10.
Stained onion peel under the microscope: draw a few brick-shaped cells fitted closely together. Label the cell wall (the firm outer boundary), the cytoplasm, the darkly stained nucleus in each cell, and the large vacuole. Add a title and the magnification used. Labels go to the side with straight, ruled lines that do not cross.
The pattern is the same in all three: principle first, working with units or labels, then a check. That is how step marks are earned in CBSE science.
From Class 11, science becomes separate subjects. Our physics, chemistry and biology home tutors in Gurgaon pages cover that step, and our NEET biology tutors in Gurgaon page is for students who are already thinking about medicine.
In most Gurugram CBSE schools the year runs April to March, with a half-yearly exam in the autumn; check your own school's calendar. For Classes 6 to 9, a tutor's plan usually follows four blocks:
For every CBSE subject, not just science, start from the CBSE home tutors in Gurgaon page. If you are still matching a school's board to the right kind of tutor, the post on Gurugram schools, their boards and picking a tutor walks through it.
Younger children gain most from a tutor in the room: the notebook gets checked line by line and a quick activity can happen on the spot. By Class 9, numericals and timed tests travel well online as long as the written page is on screen, and an online slot saves a weekday drive through peak traffic on Gurgaon's arterial roads. Plenty of CBSE families settle on a split week: teaching at home, testing online.
Supply is thickest in long-settled areas: Sector 14 in old Gurgaon, Sector 43 and Nirvana Country usually have CBSE science tutors free straight after school. In the newer belt, for instance Sector 86, Saturday and Sunday mornings or a hybrid arrangement give a wider pick. To look sector by sector, open our page of home tutors in Gurgaon; if your child is moving between boards, the multi-board science home tutors in Gurgaon page helps.
Share the class, Standard or Advanced if it is Class 9, whichever of physics, chemistry or biology is slipping, your sector and preferred days. A shortlist of two or three matched CBSE science tutors follows, each fee listed, and lesson one is a free demo. During it, look for these signs:
Tutors who join go through an ID check; the Verified badge appears only after our team has reviewed the ID; here is what that review involves. If the demo disappoints, we arrange one with the next tutor instead; swapping tutors at any later point also costs nothing.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Why one science tutor charges more than another is unpacked in our home tuition fees in Gurgaon post.
Parents often tell us their child's school so the tutor can follow the same board and books. These Gurugram schools follow CBSE, as shown on each school's own site or its board's directory, with the sector each is in. NXTutors has no tie-up with any school; tutors are matched by board and syllabus, and the list is alphabetical, not a ranking.
For this board: CBSE home tutors in Gurgaon.
More on how these boards differ: Gurugram schools and their boards.
NCERT lists Curiosity (Hindi: Jigyasa) for each of Classes 6, 7 and 8, the new Exploration (Hindi: Anveshan) for Class 9, and the book titled Science for Class 10. Because the Class 9 book is new, older guides and a sibling's notes may not match it, so a tutor should work from the current book and the 2026-27 CBSE curriculum.
Consider it when Standard science already feels easy and your child is hungry for harder problems. The Advanced option means ten more chapters and a separate 1-hour, 25-mark paper of higher-order questions. Those marks stay outside the main total; reaching 50% brings only a marksheet note, in wording CBSE still calls tentative. Choose it for challenge, never as a way to lift the main score.
CBSE splits the 20 school-awarded marks equally, 5 apiece, between the portfolio, periodic assessment, multiple assessment and subject enrichment (practical work). All of it is earned in school across the year, so a tutor should help keep the practical record and portfolio up to date from the first term instead of at the end.
Yes, though the experiments themselves happen in the school lab. A tutor rehearses each experiment on the CBSE list: what it sets out to show, how the apparatus is drawn, which readings go in the table, what they prove, and what could go wrong. That prepares the student for the lab session, the written record and the lab-based questions that appear in the theory paper.
By CBSE's own estimate, roughly half its Board questions now test competencies through cases, sources, data and real-world applications. The student meets an unfamiliar set-up and has to reason from an NCERT idea. Practising with the command verbs (explain, compare, interpret, evaluate) and answering from the data given, not from memory, is the core skill.
Many do not. A tutor helps most when a child has lost interest, struggles to explain what an activity shows, or is weak with units and simple graphs before Class 9. At this stage a weekly session, occasionally two, is enough, built on activities and short written explanations rather than notes to memorise.
The main changes are the NCERT books, CBSE's 20 internal marks and its competency-based questions. A tutor should map which NCERT chapters your child has not met, close those first, and then shift answer-writing towards CBSE's style: exact terms, labelled diagrams, and numericals with units on every line.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Rates are set by each tutor and shown next to their name when we send your shortlist.
