Home Tuition Fees in Gurgaon (2026): What Parents Pay and Why
"How much does a home tutor cost?" is usually the second question parents ask, right after "can you find someone good?". The honest answer is that it depends, but that does not help you plan a budget. Two quotes for the same subject can differ a lot, and without knowing why, it is hard to tell whether a higher fee buys better teaching or just a longer drive.
This guide explains home tuition fees in Gurgaon (Gurugram) as we see them on NXTutors: the range most sessions fall into, the factors that push a fee up or down, how to turn an hourly rate into a monthly figure, how to judge whether you are getting value, the red flags to watch for, and how to talk about money with a tutor without awkwardness.
The fee range on NXTutors
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end of that range. Specialists for IB Higher Level or JEE Advanced can charge more.
That range is wide on purpose. It covers a Class 6 student who needs help with homework habits and a Class 12 student preparing for an entrance exam with a tutor who has taught that paper for years. Where your child's tuition sits within it depends on a handful of factors, and once you understand them, the quotes you receive start to make sense. There is a fuller breakdown by class and subject on our tuition pricing guide.
What moves the fee
Class band. Junior classes usually cost less than senior ones. From Class 9 onwards the content gets harder, board exams come into view, and fewer tutors are comfortable teaching at that level.
Board. CBSE and ICSE tutors are widely available in Gurgaon, which keeps fees moderate. IB and IGCSE tutors who know the paper styles, internal assessments and coursework rules are fewer, so their fees tend to be higher.
Subject. Maths, physics and chemistry in senior classes usually sit higher than, say, social science in middle school, because the pool of confident tutors is smaller and the preparation per class is heavier.
Specialist level. A tutor preparing a student for JEE Advanced or IB Maths Analysis and Approaches HL is doing specialised work. Expect these fees at the top of the range or above it.
Experience. A tutor with many years of board-year teaching, a clear method and ready material usually charges more than someone newer. Newer tutors can be very good for junior classes and for building habits.
Travel and zone. A home tutor's real working time includes the drive. A tutor who has to cross the city at school-run or office hours, or get through a long visitor-entry routine at a large gated society, may price that in. A tutor who lives in or near your zone, for example within Golf Course Extension Road or within Sohna Road, can often keep the fee lower.
Frequency and length. Some tutors offer a slightly lower hourly rate for regular classes, such as three a week, compared with an occasional class. Longer sessions of 90 minutes are common in senior classes and change the monthly total, even if the hourly rate is the same.
Home vs online. Online classes remove travel, so they can cost less, but not always: an experienced IB or JEE tutor may charge similar rates in both formats. Our comparison of home tutor and online tutor covers this in more detail.
Group vs one-to-one. A small group, such as two or three children from the same society, usually means a lower cost per child. The trade-off is less individual attention and a pace that has to suit everyone.
Fee factors at a glance
| Factor | Tends to push the fee up | Tends to keep the fee lower |
|---|---|---|
| Class band | Classes 11–12 | Classes 1–8 |
| Board | IB, IGCSE | CBSE, ICSE (wider pool of tutors) |
| Subject | Senior maths, physics, chemistry | Junior subjects, general homework support |
| Specialist level | JEE Advanced, IB HL | School-level syllabus |
| Experience | Many years of board or entrance teaching | Newer tutors |
| Travel and zone | Long cross-city drive at peak hours | Tutor based in or near your zone |
| Frequency | Occasional or one-off classes | Regular weekly slots |
| Format | Home tuition with long travel | Online (sometimes) |
| Group size | One-to-one | Small group (lower cost per child) |
No single row decides the fee. A Class 12 CBSE maths tutor who lives two sectors away may quote less than a Class 10 IGCSE tutor driving across the city. Look at the whole picture.
Turning an hourly rate into a monthly budget
Tutors quote per hour or per class, but families budget per month. The arithmetic is simple:
Monthly cost = hourly rate × hours per session × sessions per week × weeks in the month.
Use four weeks as your planning figure. Some months have a few extra days, and some lose classes to school exams, festivals or holidays, so four is a sensible middle.
Here is how it works at the two ends of the NXTutors range, for one-hour classes:
- Two classes a week at ₹800 an hour: ₹800 × 2 × 4 = ₹6,400 a month.
- Three classes a week at ₹800 an hour: ₹800 × 3 × 4 = ₹9,600 a month.
- Two classes a week at ₹2,500 an hour: ₹2,500 × 2 × 4 = ₹20,000 a month.
- Three classes a week at ₹2,500 an hour: ₹2,500 × 3 × 4 = ₹30,000 a month.
If sessions are 90 minutes, multiply by 1.5. Two 90-minute classes a week at ₹2,500 an hour is ₹2,500 × 1.5 × 2 × 4 = ₹30,000 a month.
Two practical points. First, plan for the heavier months. Many families increase frequency before pre-boards or entrance exams, so budget for a few months at a higher level rather than being surprised. Second, if your child needs two subjects, add them separately; a combined maths and science tutor may be possible in junior classes, but senior subjects usually need separate specialists.
How to judge value, not just price
The cheapest option is not always the most economical. A tutor who charges less but needs twice as many months to fix the same gap costs more in the end. Look for these signs of value.
A demo that actually teaches
The first class should teach one real idea, check that your child understood it, and end with a small task. Use our demo class checklist for parents to judge it properly.
A plan
After the demo, a good tutor can tell you what they noticed and what they will cover in the first month. A written plan, even a short one, is a sign they have thought about your child and not just the syllabus.
Regular feedback
Agree how and how often you will hear about progress: a short message after each class, or a summary every two weeks. If you only find out how things are going when you ask, the fee is buying less than it should.
Homework that gets checked
Much of the learning happens between classes. A tutor who sets practice and actually goes through it next time is giving you more than the hour in the room.
Red flags around money
- A large advance payment, such as several months up front, before a plan is agreed or your child has had a trial.
- No trial class at all, or a demo that is mostly a sales talk about results.
- Promises of marks or ranks. No honest tutor can guarantee a result, and a fee justified by a promise is a warning sign.
- Vague terms: no clear answer on what happens to a missed class, a cancellation or a holiday month.
- No record of payments. Always keep a receipt or a clear message trail for every payment.
- Frequent extra charges for "special sessions" that were not part of the original agreement.
How to discuss fees with a tutor
Many parents find money conversations awkward, but tutors are used to them, and being clear early prevents misunderstandings later. A few pointers:
- Ask before the demo, not after. You should know the hourly rate before your child's time is used.
- Ask what the fee includes. Is it per hour or per class? How long is a class? Does it include tests, notes, or a short doubt session before exams?
- Agree the schedule and the monthly total together. Write down the days, times, class length and the monthly figure that follows from them.
- Settle cancellations and notice. What happens if your child is ill, or the tutor cancels? How much notice does either side give before stopping?
- Be open about your budget. If the fee is higher than you planned, say so. The tutor may suggest fewer but longer classes, or a mix of home and online sessions. If the numbers still do not work, it is better to know now.
- Put it in writing. A short message that both of you acknowledge is enough.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a home tutor cost in Gurgaon?
On NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end, and specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
How many classes a week does my child need?
Two a week is a common starting point for one subject. Students with big gaps, or in the months before board or entrance exams, often move to three. Agree a review after the first month and adjust then.
Is online tuition cheaper than home tuition?
Sometimes, because the tutor does not travel, but not always. Experienced IB and JEE tutors may charge similar rates in both formats. Compare the actual quotes you receive.
Should I pay several months in advance?
Be cautious about large advance payments before your child has had a trial and a plan is agreed. Whatever you pay, keep a receipt or a clear written record.
Can I ask a tutor to lower their fee?
You can be open about your budget. A tutor may suggest a different schedule, longer but fewer classes, or some online sessions. If the fee still does not fit, it is better to choose another shortlisted tutor than to start with resentment on either side.
