Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

The short answer for parents: an MYP maths tutor in Gurugram should do two jobs at once. The first is plain mathematical fluency, so that algebra, number work and geometry stop being a struggle. The second is teaching your child how MYP maths is judged, which is against four written criteria rather than a percentage on a chapter test. This guide explains how MYP maths is assessed, what changes across the five years, three worked examples of the kind of task your child will meet, how a home tutor plans the year around school units, and how MYP maths leads into the IB Diploma or IGCSE. The author is Ajay Vatsyayan, NXTutors' maths tutor for the IB Diploma, IGCSE and ISC.
The Middle Years Programme is the IB's programme for students aged 11 to 16. The IB describes it as a five-year programme, though a school may run it in a two-, three- or four-year format. In a school that runs all five years, MYP 1 to MYP 5 usually line up with Grades 6 to 10.
The IB sets a framework for mathematics, not a national textbook. Its framework groups the subject into four branches, and each school writes its own units of work within them:
| Branch (IB framework) | What it usually looks like in class | What a tutor keeps an eye on |
|---|---|---|
| Number | Fractions, ratio, percentages, powers, standard form, estimation | Mental arithmetic and exact working without leaning on a calculator |
| Algebra | Expressions, equations, sequences, graphs of relationships, later functions | Moving from "I can see the pattern" to writing it as a rule with a variable |
| Geometry and trigonometry | Angles, shapes, area and volume, transformations, later right-angled trigonometry | Labelled diagrams and giving a reason for each step |
| Statistics and probability | Collecting and displaying data, averages, spread, chance | Choosing the right graph and saying what the numbers mean |
The middle column is a general picture, not an IB list. Because units are school-written, the most useful document a tutor can see is your child's unit planner for the current term.
MYP maths is assessed against four criteria of equal weight. Each one is scored against level descriptors, up to a maximum of 8. A single task usually targets one or two criteria, not all four, which is why the task sheet matters so much.
The closest to a conventional test. Can the student select the right method and apply it accurately to familiar and less familiar problems? Fluency practice pays off most here.
The student explores a situation, spots a pattern, states it as a general rule, tests it on new cases and, in later years, explains why it must hold. Many CBSE-trained children have never been asked to do this.
Correct notation, clear diagrams, logical order and moving between words, symbols, tables and graphs. Good mathematics can score poorly here if the reader has to guess what was done.
Turning a real situation into a mathematical model, solving it, and then judging whether the answer makes sense in the real world and how the model could be improved.
Criteria B and D are where tutoring changes the most. Knowing that a strong answer must test and justify, not just find, is a habit that can be taught, and it carries straight into Diploma work later.
The criteria stay the same across the five years, but what counts as a strong response grows with the student.
The jump that catches families out is between MYP 3 and MYP 4. The tasks get longer, the algebra gets heavier and the decisions made in these two years shape which Diploma maths course is realistic.
The IB's eAssessment for the MYP is optional, and the school decides whether to register. Where it does, mathematics and the sciences are assessed through on-screen examinations, and maths is offered as two options: mathematics and extended mathematics. In the classroom, many schools mirror this with a standard and an extended route in the final years.
| Question | Points towards standard | Points towards extended |
|---|---|---|
| Algebra by hand | Slow or error-prone with expanding, factorising and rearranging | Comfortable manipulating expressions without a calculator |
| Diploma plans | Likely to take Applications and Interpretation, or maths at SL | Considering Analysis and Approaches, especially at HL |
Schools set their own criteria for placing students. If a student wants to move up a route, a focused term on algebraic fluency before the school's decision point helps more than general homework support.
These are original problems in the style of MYP tasks, written to show what a tutor is teaching, not copied from any school's material.
A path is made from a single row of n white tiles, with a border of grey tiles all around it, three tiles deep in total. Pattern 1 has 1 white tile and 8 grey tiles. How many grey tiles does pattern n need?
Most students stop after step 2. The tutor's job is to make steps 3 to 5 automatic: a rule in symbols, a test on a case not used to find it, and a reason why it works.
Shop A charges ₹2 a page plus ₹40 for binding. Shop B charges ₹3 a page with free binding. Which should a student use for a project report?
For p pages, Shop A costs 2p + 40 and Shop B costs 3p. They cost the same when 2p + 40 = 3p, so p = 40. Check with 60 pages: Shop A costs ₹160 and Shop B ₹180, so Shop A is cheaper above 40 pages and Shop B below it. The criterion D part comes next: is the model realistic? Colour pages may cost more, a shop may give a discount for large orders, and travel to the shop is a cost too. A student who adds two sentences like this, and suggests how the model could include them, is doing what the criterion asks.
Solve 3(x − 2) = 2x + 5. Expanding gives 3x − 6 = 2x + 5; subtracting 2x from both sides gives x − 6 = 5; so x = 11. A check in the original equation: 3(9) = 27 and 2(11) + 5 = 27. Written this way, one step per line with the check at the end, the same answer communicates far better than "x = 11" alone, and the check catches sign slips before the teacher does.
MYP summative tasks are assessed school work, so academic integrity applies just as it does later in the Diploma.
A tutor can: teach the mathematics the task needs, work through a similar practice problem that is not the assessed one, explain what the task-specific descriptors are asking for, and question the student until the student finds the next step themselves.
A tutor should not: solve the assessed problem, write or rephrase any part of the submission, build the graphs or spreadsheets the student hands in, or correct a draft line by line. If a student is unsure what help is allowed, the class teacher's guidance comes first. Example 1 above is the right model: a parallel task, worked together, so the student can do their own one alone.
Every school writes its own units and calendar, so the plan follows the school's unit planner. The shape below works for most students; the number of sessions depends on the gaps found in the first few weeks.
| Point in each unit or term | Focus | What the tutor does |
|---|---|---|
| Start of the year | Diagnosis | A short check on number, algebra and geometry basics; reads the year's unit list; agrees one or two goals with the family |
| Start of each unit | Content | Teaches the new topic and builds fluency, so the later task is not slowed down by the arithmetic |
| Middle of each unit | Formative practice | Parallel practice tasks aimed at the criteria the summative task will use |
| Before a summative task | Criteria | Reads the task sheet with the student, plans the time, practises the write-up style on a different problem |
| After results come back | Feedback | Goes through the teacher's comments and turns them into two or three targets for the next unit |
| MYP 4 and 5 | Next steps | Builds algebra for the extended route if wanted; past-style on-screen questions if the school registers; DP or IGCSE preparation |
In MYP 1 to 3, one session a week is usually enough for a student who is broadly on track. In MYP 4 and 5, or when a student is moving up to extended maths, two a week is common in the weeks before summative tasks.
Most Gurugram students finishing the MYP move into the IB Diploma, where maths becomes Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at SL or HL. The change in style is large. MYP tasks give time to explore; Diploma papers are timed and dense, and speed with algebra matters. Students who have practised criterion B habits do find the Diploma's internal assessment, the mathematical exploration, more natural. Our IB maths tutors in Gurgaon page sets out the Diploma courses, papers and the exploration, and the AA vs AI, SL vs HL guide helps with the choice.
Some schools run IB for the early years and Cambridge IGCSE in Grades 9 and 10. Moving from MYP 3 into IGCSE means getting used to exam papers and a syllabus topic list in place of criteria; our IGCSE maths tutor page covers that route. Families joining an MYP school from CBSE or ICSE should read our guide to switching from CBSE to the IB or IGCSE. For criteria and eAssessment in maths and sciences side by side, see IB MYP maths and sciences: criteria and eAssessment, and if your child also needs science, our IB MYP sciences tutors page explains how we match for it.

MYP families are spread across the city, and the right format depends on where you live and when the school day ends. Around Golf Course Extension Road and Sector 67, and nearer the city in Sector 43 and South City 1, home sessions are often practical once you pick a slot that avoids the evening rush on the main roads. Weekend mornings are popular because MYP students often have long school days and activities.
Online sessions suit MYP maths well when the tutor can see the student's working live, through a shared whiteboard, a writing tablet or a camera above the notebook. A hybrid plan, one home visit and one online session with the same tutor, often gives access to a stronger MYP specialist than home sessions alone. Our online tutoring for Gurgaon page explains the setup.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and our home tuition fees in Gurgaon post helps with budgeting.
To start, tell us the MYP year, whether your child is on the standard or extended route, the current unit or task, where you live and which evenings or weekends suit you. Our maths home tutor in Gurgaon page covers every board; for the whole IB picture, from PYP to the Diploma, see IB tutors in Gurgaon; and if you prefer online-only classes, our national IB maths tutor page. Our guide to Gurgaon schools, boards and choosing a tutor and the parent's guide to IB and IGCSE tutoring add context, or browse every sector and zone on our page of home tutors in Gurgaon.
Parents often tell us their child's school so the tutor can follow the same board and books. These Gurugram schools follow IB, as shown on each school's own site or its board's directory, with the sector each is in. NXTutors has no tie-up with any school; tutors are matched by board and syllabus, and the list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

More on how these boards differ: Gurugram schools and their boards.
Against four criteria of equal weight: A Knowing and understanding, B Investigating patterns, C Communicating, and D Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The highest level on each criterion is 8, and a single school task usually targets one or two of them. Your child's task sheet shows which criteria apply and what the teacher expects.
The IB's optional MYP on-screen examination offers maths as mathematics and as extended mathematics, and many schools run matching standard and extended routes in the final years. Extended suits a student comfortable with algebra by hand who may take Analysis and Approaches in the Diploma. The school decides placement, so ask how and when it is done.
No. MYP eAssessment is optional, and the school decides whether to register its students. Where it does, maths and the sciences are assessed through on-screen examinations. If your child's school registers, a tutor can add practice in that format in the final year; if not, the focus stays on school tasks and Diploma readiness.
Yes, within limits. A tutor can teach the maths the task needs, set a parallel practice problem and unpack the task descriptors. It is not the tutor's place to solve the assessed problem, write or reword the submission, or edit the draft. The class teacher's guidance on outside help always comes first.
Usually because criteria B, C and D reward more than correct answers. A student who finds a pattern but never states it as a rule, tests it on a new case and explains why it works, or who ends a real-life task on a number without judging whether it makes sense, scores below their ability. These are habits a tutor can teach in a term or two.
Investigation and communication habits carry into the Diploma's mathematical exploration. The bigger change is pace: Diploma papers are timed and need fast, accurate algebra, especially for Analysis and Approaches. Strengthening algebra, functions and trigonometry in MYP 4 and 5 makes DP1 much smoother.
Ideally a few weeks before the first term, or as soon as the first task sheet arrives. The content is rarely the problem; writing explanations, testing rules and judging real-life answers are. A tutor can practise these on parallel tasks so the first assessed unit is not a shock.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
